TL;DR
Combat Sports
For those involved in combat sports like boxing or martial arts, ease of use while wearing gloves is crucial. Hockey water bottles are favored because they can be opened with teeth and squeezed for water [1:1]. Bike water bottles also offer similar convenience
[1:2]. Some users have praised the Hydro Flask with a straw lid, although it requires pre-opening before putting on gloves
[1:4]. The discontinued Nathan stainless steel bottle was highly regarded for its glove-friendly lever mechanism
[1:3].
Cycling
Cyclists often look for bottles that resist scratching from bottle cages. Elite and Specialized bottles are recommended for their secure fit and lightweight design [3:1]
[3:3]. Polar insulated bottles are noted for keeping drinks cold and being dishwasher safe
[3:2]. While some users find Elite bottles prone to scratches, newer models have added texture to minimize visible wear
[3:5].
Swimming
Swimmers typically prefer plastic bottles due to the risk of dents and damage from dropping stainless steel bottles on concrete pool surfaces [4:5]. Simple Gatorade bottles are popular for their squeezability and ease of use during quick breaks
[4:4]. Many swimmers avoid straw-style bottles, preferring ones that allow water to flow easily into the mouth
[4:5].
General Use and Hydration
For general hydration needs, Nalgene bottles are frequently recommended for their durability and cost-effectiveness [5:1]
[5:4]. Stainless steel options like Yeti and Hydro Flask are favored for their insulation properties and stylish designs
[5:2]
[5:3]. These bottles are often gifted or acquired as swag, making them accessible choices for many users
[5:2].
When selecting a water bottle for sports, consider factors such as ease of use, durability, insulation, and personal preferences regarding materials and design.
I've been training bjj and muay thai for quite awhile now and i've been frustrated with the lack of stainless steel water bottles that can be used while wearing boxing gloves. I designed a solution that I'm considering brining to market. What water bottles do you typically use while training, and is this a problem worth solving? Thanks!
Zwigs
Bike water bottles also easy to use with gloves.
The perfect water bottle for boxers existed and then they stopped making it, tragically mine just broke after about ten solid years of use. https://www.trailspace.com/gear/nathan/stainless-steel-700-ml-bottle-silicon-sleeve/ When your gloves are laced up (and/or duct taped on during sparring) there are very few bottles you can open on your own - the great thing about this was it had a simple level you could open wearing gloves. Desperately trying to find something similar right now. Good luck!
Hydro flask with straw lid works for me, so long as I open it before I put my gloves on. 40 oz size is usually enough for a 1 hr class unless it’s VERY high intensity
I paid something like seven bucks maybe five years ago for one of those Gatorade plastic sports water bottles and it's grippy enough for me to pinch between two boxing gloves and use as intended. 🤷♀️
I use those hockey water bottles so I can open the spout with my teeth and squeeze to get the water
I’m looking for an All Blacks water bottle: black with a white outline of the silver leaf. I’m in the US and can’t find exactly what I’m looking for online. Any leads or advice is very much appreciated❣️
Thank you for this suggestion. The size and shape is like this photo and then the leaf is an outline: https://a.co/d/0CaZy1S
What brand of water bottle do people recommend that don’t scratch to bits the first few times they go in and out of their bottle cages.
To clarify, not worried about insulation at this point, just ones that stays looking like it’s not been dragged behind my bike.
Just after a dark or clear coloured bottle that doesn’t look a year or two old after the first few uses.
Fidlock bottles look great but are they worth the high price tag?
TIA
Polar insulated. They keep your hydration cold and you can wash them in the dishwasher so they don’t develop the disgusting disgusting mold like camelback bottles.
Again, good to know but specifically need to know how they hold up for scratches.
I have these in white and use plastic bontrager cages I got on my first road bike. The only scratches I can find are from when I've missed my cage and dropped it in the road/trail (lol) The outer bottle is translucent so the only thing you really see is the white insulation. High recommend.
Just for the record, take photos of your bike on the drivetrain side.
I'm a huge fan of Elite water bottles but they do scratch easily....however they've recently added texture so scratches aren't as noticeable - I've not tried the new ones yet.
I second the Elite bottles and no longer use Camelback Podiums. The Elites are simple to clean and also probably the lightest bottle. People pay big money chasing lower weight frames and components so I think simple things like bottle and bottle cage is good low hanging fruit for anyone remotely interested in weight. If you want the slightly more durable version there is the Elite Jet instead of the lightweight Fly model.
Fly kind of sucks because the nozzle keeps slipping when you go to drink. A design flaw which I have come to accept.
I like how easily the can be cleaned. They do have a slight learning curve though, bc of how thin the bottle walls are.
Not a fan of Specialized otherwise, but man their Purist bottles are admitted very nice.
I have the Elite crono cx and they are pretty cool, light and aero (if u care about aerodynamics). For them to scratch, I think you'd need to trough them in the ground
Maybe the cage is the problem? Or, better yet, who cares about bottle scratches? To answer the question, the Camelbak bottles have the best valve, but I've found that the "gradual" indent design means that they don't snap into cages as securely as other bottles. I tend to use either Elite or Specialized bottles, they have deeper indents that snap securely into most cages.
I care about bottle scratches, that’s literally why I asked.
Why would I want a great looking bike and bottle cages that look ten years old after 2 months.
I'm a former college swimmer, and i was frustrated that with the stainless steel water bottle options for swim workouts. I designed a new stainless steel water bottle with quick access to the water inside, and I am considering taking the new bottle to market. What water bottles do you all use? and is this problem worth solving?
Thanks!
Matt
I don’t know there’s a problem worth solving here. There are so many options available. Personally I like my yeti bottles, I also have a 2 pack of hydroflask bottles from Costco, and a couple no name ones. They all work equally as well and most importantly, other than the ones from Costco all were gifted to me.
A simple Gatorade bottle has literally never failed me. Drop it at the end of the lane, finish up your set, take a quick sip, and move on.
Yup the simple green bottle with the orange cap. Mine cost like $5 at Target and last forever. It’s also great to be able to just shoot the water out of the bottle and into my mouth.
I don't like to do stainless steel at the pool. Everything is usually concrete so if you drop it, its forever dented. Never glass in a pool. Aluminum is even more fragile than stainless. So mostly plastics. I also hate the "straw" style bottles. I don't want to suck water, I want to have it flow into my mouth without my lungs doing any work. I also don't want to unscrew a cap. I want to operate it with 1 hand especially because I might be holding the wall with the other. The classic Gatorade sport bottle works well for squeezable. I have a hard tritan bpa-free plastic with a push-button fliptop and hole design on the one I use right now.
I use a cheap plastic water bottle.ive had it for years and it's really good at holding water.
Currently using a tervis tumbler water bottle. I leave my water out in the hot sun outside for a whole workout…it stays cool for 90 min if I fill it with enough ice. I’ve definitely used a variety though. In college I used a wide mouth Nalgene (and in retrospect wasted too much time with the lid) and when doing long heavy duty workouts in Florida summers, I’d bring a whole insulated mini water cooler (like the kind my mom brought to the beach when I was little with a bunch of paper cups?) and drink out of the spout.
For marathon swims, it’s squirt bottles only. Not enough time/coordination for anything else.
After years of dehydration I recently discovered the community. I was wondering what the best water bottle would be.
I get a lot of free stainless steel water bottles through work as swag! My favorites are: -My 30 oz Yeti with the new 2 piece lid -My Corkcicle canteen that is about 25 oz. This has a small opening, so 6 great if you lobe ice -My 30 oz Hydroflask (a classic choice)
I have a yeti 64oz. I love it. It’s huge so I only have to fill it about twice a day and it keeps the water whatever temperature you want it. I have the straw top too which I really like.
Nalgene. They pay for themselves many many times over in a short amount of time. I have a few that I’ve been using for years.

I use a Nalgene. Durable, inexpensive, and easy to clean.
Are they safe plastic wise?
Yeah. They are BPA free.
I play high school lacrosse, and am looking for a good brace. I’ve had two meniscus surgeries in the past year from football, and I’m hoping not to go through another one. Does anyone know of any braces that will hold up in sports, while also giving good meniscus support? Any help is much appreciated.
I had a menisectomy a few years back and play tennis and use the Bregg Fusion OA Brace and love it. https://www.breg.com/products/knee-bracing/functional-oa/
Always try and get your meniscus repaired if possible. I didn't do this and now paying the price.
Good luck!
I have found nothing better than bauerfiend On the pricier side but it’s absolute industry best
Donjoy braces are highly recommended. I’ve also heard good things about brace layer
Yes, I have the donjoy reaction web and it’s very good.
Anaconda Fightwear Kneebrace
I have a Bauerfeind sports knee brace. It gives your knee a lovely hug with side support. I do like it for sports as it still allows for deep squats, medium support I would say and there is no rubbing. I have worn mine for skiing and concerts and gym workouts. They have social media giveaways and sales sometimes. Good because it doesn't limit your movement yet still gives your meniscus a nice hug.
I also have a breg brace, definitely a sturdier brace that limits twisting with good medial support. I have worn this for skiing and walks and workouts. I find it does limit deep squats and the velcro behind my calf pinches sometimes. Breg is a great brace and I trust I won't reinjure when wearing it.
I've tried a few water bottles but can't find one that doesn't come with a mouth full of mud or dust that I can use while riding. The camelback are OK but I like to ride with a rucksack when I'm only gone a few hours. Even the bottles with lids still seem to let the dust through the cap.
The camelbak podium dirt series. I ride really dusty trails on the regular and it works flawlessly. The way the water shoots out you don’t even have to put your mouth on it so even less of a chance of dirt in the mouth.
Second this and they stick really well to a topeak bottle cage.
Thats the bottle i use... spout is always clean.
Second
Fidlock
I have both versions on the fidlock the one with the dust cap keeps it clean still easy to flip open while pedaling, other one doesn't bother me too much if I'm thirsty
I have one and it gets dusty just like all the other water bottles. I just unscrew the whole top cap and drink from it
Yup, have several of their model with the dust cap. Works very well
Learn to love the grit
The dust aids in recovery!
I feel like every bottle I have leaks. Most are Purist. I end up having sugar water all over my bike and hands because the nipple won’t close down all the way. Anyone have recommendations for bottles that are light and don’t leak?
I started using Bivo water bottles and haven't had any issues with leaking. The biggest plus for them is they're metal and not plastic so they don't get that plastic-y taste over time and there's not worries about long-term plastic water bottle use on my health.
Third vote for Bivo. Plus they are so. easy. to drink from. Recently had to bring a second bottle on a ride and I was so annoyed at how clunky the other bottle felt.
Second vote for Bivo.
I still end up with plastic bottles because people always are giving them away for race entry or whatever it's a fucking pain.
Of those, I like my Tacx the best.
Also great in the winter. I know they say not to use them with hot stuff, but for long cold rides you can fill them up with hot water from a tap then use the Bivo as your second bottle. It'll be a drinkable temp by the time you get through the first bottle.
I’ve never had an issue with camelbak podiums or the elite fly if you’re looking for light weight
Podiums never drain out completely. So frustrating to see drink in there but you can't get to it unless you take the lid off.
Yes you can lock them to stop leaks but you might as well just suck it up. A damp cloth cleans it off the frame.
I'd rather that than locking and unlocking the bottle each time you drink.
try camel back reign lid on the podium (interchangeable) the reign bottle fits many water bottle holders and is 32oz. I like a podium chill bottle with a reign lid.. best combo.
Only caveat with the Podium bottles is that some don't 'close' if the inside piece is missing. Not a big deal, but you do need to separate them to clean the lids and I've lost one or two.
I’ve grown to hate podiums. They’re too stiff and the twist mechanism is a pain. Specialized has a bottle that I’ve switched to and it’s much easier to squeeze when your hands are numb.
Elite fly are the best bottles. You can also break down the lid which makes cleaning drink mix so easy. Mine don't leak
Mine is the mouth piece. You pull it up and as soon as you do some liquid is set free.
One of my two bottles recently got to the point where if I squeeze, some water straight up comes out of the bottom of the mouth piece.
They're still super light and liquid comes out easy, so I might buy them again.
+1 for Polar Breakaway.
Been swapping between 4 for years now, dishwasher cleaned all the time, and still no leaking or warping.
My beloved oversized, NYR squeezy bottle broke after a solid decade of hanging in there.
Any recommendations for an oversized water bottle? I don’t like the straws, just the pop top that you can squeeze for a quick drenching or a gulp between plays.
kinda tough to beat the classic green Gatorade squeeze bottle
Free water bottles left behind at rink. Grab a few, run through dishwasher. (Dozens left behind each week up here in MN)
$5 gatorade squeezy bottles
They're 10 at the target and all the sports stores by me! Long Island, NY.
Gatorade squeezer, I just bring 2. More convenient to carry 2 than any other bottle ive tried.
Anybody know of a really good bottle that’ll last me. I’m looking to put stickers on it so it should be kind of smooth and money is no issue, I want the best of the best
I have a hydroflask and I will never use anything else ever again. Ice stays cold, doesn't leak, easy to clean, stickers stick well to it, I can't sing the praises of this thing any louder. It's amazing!!
Absolutely another hydro flask vote. Hands down the best water bottle I’ve ever owned.
I have a 5 year old hydro flask that I use for water and it never sweats and the water stays cold with ice for days.
Plus one to the hydro flask, really well made product
I went down this rabbit hole last year and settled on the Yeti Rambler with the flip-top spout thing, in the 28 oz size so it still fits in most cup holders. They just don’t leak, and keeps water cool all day long.
I live with my yeti rambler by my side. Florida here and it’s just not possible to not have a water bottle on you at all times. I go to local water store and pay $1.25 for 5 gallons of RO UV light filtered water. You do need to clean the rubber o ring gasket frequently as they build up mold.
Plus one for the rambler, I have one with the "chug lid" and it's awesome.
Nalgene, they also sell replacement lids when the connector part to hold the lid on breaks. They also have inserts you can buy and wash out that make the wide mouth easier to sip from so it doesn’t all spill.
For me, the Stanley trigger action is amazing. Vacuum insulated so stuff stays cold or hot for the whole work day, very easy to use and won't leak and has a big opening so it is easy to clean.
Only other brand I would mention is Orca, like Yeti they are a roto-molded cooler company. The main difference is they are made in the USA by union labor. Mine has received the standard dents, bumps, and trips through the dishwasher (top rack) and is holding up great.
Good to know there is a Union made water bottle!
Nalgene is by far the best BIFL product. They make mouth pieces for it if you dont like the wide mouth
