TL;DR The Boruto anime has both manga canon and anime canon episodes. While all episodes are considered canon within the anime's continuity, only specific arcs directly adapt the manga.
Manga Canon Episodes
The manga canon episodes of Boruto are those that directly adapt the events from the Boruto manga. These include:
These episodes follow the storyline and character developments as depicted in the manga, making them essential for understanding the core plot.
Anime Canon Episodes
The Boruto anime also includes anime canon episodes, which are original to the anime but still considered part of the overall story. These episodes focus on world-building, character development, and expanding on elements that may not be fully explored in the manga [2:3]
[4:3]. Some of these episodes are based on light novels, adding depth to the narrative
[4:2].
Continuity and Canon Debate
There is some debate among fans regarding what constitutes canon in Boruto. While some argue that all episodes are canon [2:1], others differentiate between manga and anime canon
[5:4]. The anime and manga have separate continuities, with certain events exclusive to each medium
[5:7]. For instance, characters like Sumire have different roles in the anime compared to the manga
[5:6].
Importance of Anime Canon
Anime canon episodes are important for understanding the broader context of Boruto's world. They provide additional characterization and plot details that enrich the viewing experience [4:1]
[4:6]. Skipping these episodes might result in missing out on key developments and insights into the characters' motivations and relationships.

All this talk about fillers lists, edits without fillers pisses me off. There are no fillers in Boruto anime canon. Especially when the manga itself references the fillers and literally shows Sumire in the manga. The anime just shows more of the world building. Also the fact that most complain about Boruto being too fluffy and childish like bruh, that's the whole point of Boruto's era. The more peaceful era is what Naruto wanted for the next generation. Naruto fought to make that happen. If people hate the peaceful moments, it just means they're disrespecting Naruto's accomplishments.
I watch every episode personally. I never labelled anime cannon episodes as filler. It's just many avoid the anime and I thinks it's better to skip bad episodes than not watch it at all. And there are filler episodes. Not every filler episode is anime cannon.
As a reminder, this flair is for anime discussions. Use spoiler tags when discussing events that have taken place beyond the anime. If you see any comments with untagged manga spoilers, please report them.

So I'm trying to weave through the mess that is Boruto, and I often use animefillerlist to dodge the filler episodes in an Anime. This site has a filler list for the Anime canon, and one for the Manga canon. The thing is, there's filler episodes in the Anime continuity as well apparently...
https://www.animefillerlist.com/shows/boruto-naruto-next-generations
Are these actually filler? Would I run into a problem if I skipped them? I'm not necessarily looking to start a conversation about whether filler should be watched or not, moreso will these stories possibly have any future connecting plot points?
All episodes are canon
Let’s just say every anime original arc is canon
The site is wrong. Here is the author and illustrator confirming its cannon
Every single episode?
Apparently
>The thing is, there's filler episodes in the Anime continuity as well apparently...
That's because anime filler websites are TRASH. For some reason they decide episodes are filler with no basis whatsoever, they just mark them as such. There's no objective defined rules to count something as filler or canon, they offer no such thing.
The entire anime is canon, it has its own continuity, the manga has its own continuity too. The anime isn't a mess, trash fanpages like those just like to create a problem where there wasn't one to being with, classic western move.
Well, in the case of Naruto Shippuden, they did an alright job. There was so much horrible filler, it was almost unbearable. I watched it all of course, but whenever they said it was a filler episode, sure enough, the episode was absolutely awful. I prefer when the site just sticks to labeling things as filler when they don't appear in a Manga, but this is a special case where the Anime has been deemed canon. So I was just trying to decide what course to take.
Naruto is a different case than Boruto. That is straight up simple filler/canon. If you think Naruto fillers are that horrible, you may be going into Boruto with a bias already, so i would recommend you not reading what is and isn't manga content, otherwise you may not enjoy any anime original content from Boruto.
ALL and EVERY episode in the Boruto anime is canon.
Weather you take it as "extended canon" for the manga, the manga as a "reader's digest" of the anime or manga and anime having separated continuities, it doesn't matter.
See, two of the three fillers arcs in the Fairy Tail anime are canon because Mashima partially wrote them + referenced them in the later parts of the manga and the 100 year quest sequel. Is it the same for Naruto?
I’m wondering bcz I’m watching it from the start for the first time and I’m only now seeing people say the manga is a lot better. So I’m thinking about reading Naruto* but I wanna watch the anime first if the filler arcs are canon and relevant in Boruto (or other material like light novels and stuff).
Not that I can think of.
There are a handful of episodes that you COULD fit into canon events without affecting the main story such as what happened with the 7 tails, or the long line of Tsukoyomi dreams.
Thanks!
Nope. Anything not written by Kishimoto isn't canon. I recommend the manga because it gets to the point and doesn't drag. It also has scenes and character moments that the anime omits.
I’ll do that and watch the fights I liked reading. Thanks!!
Yeah read the fights then watch them because overall they're well animated and and it can get confusing when you read them.
Their is like a few anime canon episodes but no canon anime only arcs iirc
Noted, tysm!
No, filler arcs/episodes are by definition non-canon.
I know that’s the case most of the time but Fairy Tail’s filler is still called filler cuz it’s not in the manga. And despite that, it’s canon. Ty for answering tho!
The Kakashi mask one is canon in my heart
I’ll watch it!
so i noticed for the filler list for boruto that some episodes are listed as anime canon and some are listed as manga canon. if i only watch the manga canon episodes does that cover everything about the main plot, or is the anime following an altered storyline where i’ll be missing important plot details by skipping the anime canon episodes
Simply put, anime canon eps are based on light novels (which are hard to find and not even translated) so it is important :)
Only some of them are based on novels.
The anime-canon episodes just focus on characterization and world-building where the manga might not have had enough time to dwell on. So if you want something of a more fleshed-out world with characters that undergoe personal growth, I'd recommend watching both anime-canon and manga-canon episodes.
>where the manga might not have had enough time to dwell on.
If by "might not" you mean never because unless it's Boruto or villains (yes, Kawaki counts as he's shown to be antagonistic in the flashforward) there isn't a single other character that gets any kind of focus in the manga. Even supposed main characters Sarada and Mitsuki only recently actually did something and even then it quickly shifted back to Boruto with no time to be happy about their victory.
It's the biggest problem with the manga outside of its weekly series pacing. You can't just disregard basic character/worldbuilding and place it all in the anime. Any argument to defend it goes out the window when fans label such content as filler or anime canon anyways, implying that it's not connected to the manga so by that logic shouldn't alleviate any sins on the manga's part.
Anime canons are amenable to viewing! Because of such a mistake, people miss a jogan!
Yes, they are important, watch them
Not all of them.
you will not know the girl from latest manga chapter if you only watch manga adaptation. Anime-only canon mostly about Sumire development.
Manga Canon just straighforward to the stories where anime is buildup make characterization and world building and that kinda Good i think because this maim concern in Naruto series especially shippuden like how side character get more development in filler but when manga Canon happen they gone but in Boruto they integrated anime Canon as development of character and make small detail of anime Canon whether it was character development or so when manga Canon adapted
Okay, So I enjoy Boruto quite a bit, but one thing I don't understand about it is it's canon.
Some arcs of the story seem like they're fully canonical, and have bigger world implications but seem to be anime only, So was stuff like Ohnoki's death non-canon???
Are the anime only arcs part of the manga's canon despite not being shown there?
Only manga is canon
Anime and Manga are their own thing with different continuities that share the same events at some point.
Not true tbh. DBS does this and sometimes arcs or fights are similar, but ultimately they are seperate and neither has to wait for the other to progress.
Boruto anime is the complete opposite and follows the standard rules of filler. I.e these filler arcs only come into place when the anime needs to give the manga time to progress with the actual story and the anime will never over take the canon because its not separate and needs to wait
Its really only in Boruto you see this weird confusion about filler and canon.
I understand what your saying, the Boruto anime does wait for the manga however the the anime treats the filler like canon and it bleeds into the manga canon arcs in the anime.
One example is Urashiki, he appeared in the chunin exams with Momoshiki and his servant in the anime , he was the first person to name dropped Boruto’s dojutsu which he called the Jogan in a filler arc , implied to Toneri that the “main family” is watching them and he was the one who sealed Toneri on the moon.
The problem with his entire existence is he doesn’t exist in the manga, and a lot of the actions he took in the anime are too important for me to ignore since he’s the next main villain in the anime after Momoshiki but nothing he does or say is mentioned in the manga. The only way to learn how he get dealt with is to watch the next two filler arcs that take place after the chunin exams.
Now if I was only a manga reader I would be confused on why people bring up Urashiki, the Jogan, Toneri, anything linked with him if you catch my drift unless I was to actively search up who he is. That would cause confusion since you would think that anything involving the otsutsuki’s or Boruto’s dojutsu would be mentioned in the manga.
That’s why I say the anime and the manga are their own things that shares events because anything that happened in the anime are here to stay however the manga doesn’t try at all to line up with any of the changes the anime made and therefore the anime has a lot of contradictions with the manga, especially if you look at what’s currently going on in the anime right now.
What the other guy said. Canon is a made up thing by the fanbase. That being said, when including filler or even “canon” episodes of anime there are often contradictions between that and the manga or even that and just other episodes, so most people have accepted manga to be the “official canon” as its typically the original source.
Onoki hasn't been mentioned in the manga so until proven otherwise you can just assume he's dead like they showed in the anime.
Between the anime and the manga there are plenty of differences that conflict with the other one. In the anime Sumire took the Chuunin exams. In the manga Sumire did not. The anime is canon to the anime. The manga is canon to the manga.
Do you remember Ninja Turtles? Depending if you watched the cartoon, read the comic, or watch the movie, Splinter started out as either a human or a rat.
Boruto is not the first or last anime that goes a different way from its manga.
There is no such thing as some kind of Grand Master Canon that exists outside of both of them that grants one or the other work more "magic powers" or whatever. People get so religious about this stuff it's stupid.
I like this example a lot.
All of anime is cannon is just that manga doesn't have enough time to draw this chapters thats why this is like this but dont worry every jutsu they learn in this kinds of ep they use then on other ep too
There isn't any actual filers in boruto
Apart from manga canon arcs, I remember Naruto and Naruto Shippuuden having small anime canon arcs as suplementary material to canon lore. From the top of my head I remember the post sasuke departure's rescue missions and one of the seven swordsmen, a few tailed beast arcs, kakashi's anbu arc and the adaptation of of some novels. I Just don't remember the corrente order to watch them
There is no such thing as "anime canon". It is called filler. None of them have been confirmed canon and often heavily contradict the actual source material aka the Manga.
i wanna watch the og series again but dont wanna watch the filler
The Mecha-Naruto is absolute canon
With all the tech shit in buroto it would be
Actually it is still not canon. Boruto while developed quite far mecha Naruto would still be filler.
you can find it on animefillerlist.
I watched every episode up to 220 and I just can’t do any more filler. Where should I pick back up for the canon content? I tried looking it up on google and I’m finding different sites saying different things.
You should at least watch the Chunin Exam arc right after then skip to the Labyrinth Arc since it has to do with Kara.
See— this is a weird one cause for Boruto pt1 these mfs thought it’d be a wonderful idea to have filler episodes that are canon to the overall story💀💀 I use this one example all the time cause it’s the most notable for me.
Idk if you read the manga(well most likely but you could just be anime only that doesn’t care about spoilers) but there was a chapter somewhere when our former main man here Boruto asks Sasuke what else he can teach him and Sasuke says that he’s gonna focus on training his daughter and that maybe he can ask Naruto for help, much to Boru’s dismay.
The manga never shows Sasuke training with her but you know what does? The anime. Sarada has a whole training arc with her mom AND dad in the anime that happens basically after that moment. So really whatever episode you start watching at just depends on what you don’t mind missing.
I saw that arc and it was solid but most of the other filler has been hard to sit through
287-293, and if you want to watch the Sasuke Retsuden adaptation, 282-286.
Thank you

Besides the obvious filler arcs, I've heard that most of the show barely even happens in the manga?
What arcs aren't very important to the storyline or are downright useless that I could skip?
I don't mind the show but I'd rather follow the general story and watch canon cool moments and not watch everything like I did with OG and Shippuden.
Then what's the point of watching a series if you're gonna skip its story. Isn't it the same thing if you were reading the manga and asked people what chapters are skippable? Or a book?
I get where you come from tho, these last episodes have been so boring, I even began to notice my face remains expressionless during the 25 min it lasts.
But the story is not whole if you skip parts. We miss the growth of some characters or little details that are important later on. For example, Kawaki has been bitching less and less with every episode.
So you watched all of the Naruto fillers ??
Just because you watched it , doesn’t mean he has too. The story is still whole if he skips the mitsuki disappearance arc or the time skip arc which have no bearing on the series at all. Even this current arc is filler basically ,
So because Kawaki has been whining less which I don’t remember him even doing that much in the first place , he would miss his development??
I watched all the Naruto/ Shippuden fillers except some of the infinite tsukuyumi episodes, they were really good. But Boruto fillers aren’t as captivating. I’ll watch them, but be scrolling Reddit at the same time.
Yeah. Though I never said he has to watch them.
It's all anime canon.
Which have no impact on the story
Argue all you want. The anime is a different canon from the manga. All episodes are anime canon!!
Yea
Any of the chocho canon PLS skip
Imo all the anime canon is completely unwatchable, but opinions are subjective, so you’re gonna get varying answers on this one.
I personally only enjoy the manga canon. Ive tried a few anime canon arcs and just could not bring myself to care whatsoever, probably because I became acclimated to the epic/high tension nature of Shippuden. I’ll probably enjoy Boruto anime canon more when it gets to that level.
So, yeah, imo skip all anime canon and watch manga canon only, EXCEPT for the timeskip arc. Time skip arc Is anime canon, and it was pretty neat. Light spoiler: >!Boruto and Sasuke go back in time and interact with various notable individuals from the Leaf during OG naruto days.!<
So I’m rewatching Boruto and trying to skip unnecessary episodes, but I’m a bit confused about the way the episodes are labeled.
Some episodes are marked as: • Anime Canon • Manga Canon • Mixed Canon/Filler
I understand what “filler” means, but what exactly counts as anime canon? Is it considered important to the story? And for the mixed canon/filler ones — should I watch those or can I skip them without missing key moments?
If anyone has a breakdown or guide of which ones are worth watching and which ones I can safely skip, I’d really appreciate it!
Basically:
Everything in the anime is canon to the anime.
Even the "filler" episodes: they are classified as such only because whoever made the list didn't like them, not for objective reasons.
The anime was originally made to expand on the worldbuildingside-characters as the manga, with its glacial pacing, had no space for them.
"Anime Canon" is a catch-all term for
(for example everything before the Chunin Exam)
Do note that the anime goes its own way: Mitsuki goes through character development in episodes many classifies as either anime canon or fillers. And such development informs and impacts his character even in episodes adapting the manga.
In short: you gotta watch most everything
>Even the "filler" episodes: they are classified as such only because whoever made the list didn't like them, not for objective reasons.
The real truth about animefillerlist, but looking at the positivity, it helps them if they want to get straight into the main plot, because sometimes filler (like from Naruto, Bleach, and more) isn't like how filler and even anime arc are presented from BORUTO anime, so it's skippable.
But as I said above, it's also an ironic fact of the reason why the animefillerlist website exists.
BORUTO Anime did built different for how they handling anime canon arc and filler (Although I hate Team 10 and ChoCho Filler Episode that makes me want to skip it so hard, lol).
Anime canon basically means what happens in those episodes aren't in the manga, but has some ties to the manga canon episodes and are somewhat of an extension of it. The manga is extremely plot-focused, so these serve as an additional context or something to raise the stakes.
For example, Kawaki's backstory episode is mostly anime canon, the only bit that was in the manga was at the end, so yes they're pretty important. Kara's introduction was expanded to include what the characters are like rather than going straight to their meeting.
You can skip it, some of them are hit or miss, but you are going to be confused when they talk about what happened in those episodes. You're probably also going to not care about some characters all that much, like you could just write off Shojoji and the Mujina Bandits as a typical "villain of the arc", or be confused as to why >!Mugino dying was such a big deal, or Kashin Koji killing Victor.!<
In my experience watching BORUTO Anime!
Anime Canon is how the story being approved and supervise by Ukyo Kodachi (Old Author of BORUTO Manga), this type in Boruto anime is how the main story plot extended with a new story arc for example Kara Actuation Arc and how that story will connected and referenced in manga arc (in which adapted into the anime), for example Ao Arc and Kawaki Arc.
The anime canon is a new type of canon due to the involvement and input made for the anime arc. It does well in connecting between Manga Canon and Anime Canon until after the Kawaki Arc (and even the Chunin Re-Examination Arc). However, I think the quality of the Anime arc story writing decreased after this point. Nevertheless, I believe the Great Sea Battle of Kirigakure is how the story theme somehow became disconnected from the main story of BORUTO, along with a decreased quality of animation.
Labyrinth Game Arc is still a good anime canon for me.
So the conclusion is, the anime canon did a good job of connecting and referencing the story to the manga arc as the author's involvement is much stronger.
I hope the anime return will follow the BORUTO anime continuity along with referencing the story plot from previous anime canon arc.
P.S: Anyone won't like my statement, but I speaking as the person who did watched BORUTO Anime from start to finish... and I recommend you to skip filler (one episodic story) if you don't want to waste your time.
What's the labyrinth game arc? I can't seem to remember it at all
Hmmm, well it's a 24th Boruto anime story arc prior to Sasuke Retsuden Arc and Code Invasion Arc.
The one with the 8th kara member who trapped the train passengers in squid game
Skip filler but watch Anime Cannon.
Anime Cannon was written by Kodachi the old author.
From the interview by Planet Manga in Italy at Lucca Comics & Games 2018 with Ikemoto, it is explained that Kodachi is only the supervisor of the six scriptwriters of the anime. Kodachi himself does not write any episodes; he only receives the finished scripts and approves or rejects them. For example, if Boruto were to kill a character in an anime episode, Kodachi would reject that episode. Kodachi himself has no artistic influence on the anime episodes.

The Japan canon and filler aren’t a thing. It’s the audience that created these buzzwords to differentiate everything and compartmentalize
Well, too bad, even they know the truth about Japan's lack understanding about canon and filler, they just doing it anyway, lol.
They understand what it is. They just find it stupid and silly because if something Boruto then that’s that. There’s no BS behind it all about canon and filler and mix canon/filler
Boruto episodes that are canon
Key Considerations for Canon Episodes in Boruto:
Understanding Canon vs. Filler: Canon episodes are those that are directly adapted from the manga or contribute to the main storyline, while filler episodes do not impact the overall plot.
Manga Adaptation: The Boruto anime has a mix of canon and filler episodes. The canon episodes typically align with the events of the Boruto manga written by Masashi Kishimoto and Ukyo Kodachi.
Episode List: As of October 2023, here are the main canon episodes to focus on:
Check for Updates: Since the series is ongoing, keep an eye on new episodes as they may introduce additional canon content.
Recommendation: For a complete experience, start with the canon episodes and selectively watch filler episodes if you're interested in character development or side stories. Websites like MyAnimeList or fandom wikis can provide updated lists of canon versus filler episodes.
