Differences Between Naruto Manga and Anime

TL;DR The Naruto manga and anime share the same core storyline, but they differ in pacing, artistic style, and additional content such as filler episodes and expanded scenes. The manga offers a more concise and uncensored narrative, while the anime provides dynamic visuals, music, and voice acting that enhance emotional impact.

Pacing and Content

One of the primary differences between the Naruto manga and anime is pacing. The manga tends to have a faster pace with less filler content, allowing readers to experience the story more directly [4:1]. In contrast, the anime includes numerous filler episodes that can slow down the progression of the main plot [2:5]. Some viewers appreciate these fillers for the extra character development and world-building, while others prefer to skip them entirely [2:6].

Artistic Style and Censorship

The manga's artwork is often praised for its detail and original form, which some fans find superior to the anime's animation [4:1]. Additionally, the manga is generally less censored than the anime, providing a more raw and unfiltered depiction of certain scenes. For example, Kakashi's attack on Haku is shown more graphically in the manga than in the anime [4:1].

Audio and Visual Enhancements

The anime benefits from audio and visual elements that the manga cannot provide. This includes background music, sound effects, and voice acting, all of which contribute to a richer and more immersive experience [5:1][5:2]. These elements can enhance the emotional depth of scenes and bring characters to life in ways that static images cannot.

Additional Scenes and Character Development

While the anime generally follows the manga's storyline, it occasionally adds extra scenes or dialogue to flesh out characters and events [3:1]. These additions can offer new perspectives and insights into the story, though they may not always align perfectly with the source material. Some fans appreciate these expansions, while others prefer the manga's straightforward approach [3:1].

Boruto Series Differences

In the Boruto series, the anime diverges more significantly from the manga, with a higher proportion of filler and non-canon content [3:2]. This has led to mixed reactions among fans, with some enjoying the additional stories and others criticizing the lack of faithfulness to the manga [3:10].

Differences Between the Manga and Anime

ORIGINAL POST

I'm a Naruto Manga reader. I opted to read the manga because I felt there was too many episodes to tackle at that point. I loved it and thought it was awesome. I did give the anime a shot afterwards but really struggled to get into it. Yes I skipped filler but it still didn't hit the same way the manga did. I accepted the manga was my preferred source/medium? For the story.

Anyway in recent times I've been noticing misconceptions around the story from what I assume are anime onlies. I completed part 1 before dropping so I'm not sure how Shippuden unfolds but I was surprised by a recent post, where people were commenting about how it isn't shown in the anime that he becomes Hokage. Then we had a whole post a while back where someone was analysing Obito and Rin's "relationship" based off filler. I'm sure there are tons more examples but those are once that stand out to me being so recent.

I think the main plot points of the story between the manga and anime remain the same but sometimes I'll read a post/comments and it will feel like folks experienced a different story/character idk. Does anyone else ever feel that way?

I don’t think Naruto is one of the series that has too much differences between manga and anime. I remember some but most of the time the plot is the same. But I believe it’s mostly because people actually don’t understand what they read.

That's probably where the main issue is tbh.

For sure. There are so many personal interpretations and biases to contend with, too. People are not objective and are almost without exceptions blind to their biased and cognitive distortions without outside input. (I include myself)

That said, I like some of what the anime brought to the manga when it came to expanding on some characters or elaboration of some events.

This is a brief list of Anime-Manga Differences if you want to check it out for comparison sake. I read summaries for episodes I skip or to determine if I want to watch something anime only.

The anime is definitely not required for Naruto, although it does offer a fuller experience. I'd encourage you to check out filler/anime expansion on favorite characters or which ones you find interesting though.

There is an FAQ on here, but I really wish mods would make one that debunks misconceptions, fake/fanmade, and outright lies that get passed around as truth.

So true and I love that you can admit that. I see this happen and not just in this sub where people present their interpretations as absolute fact. I'm guilty of it as well, especially when I find myself deeply relating to a character.

>That said, I like some of what the anime brought to the manga when it came to expanding on some characters or elaboration of some events.

Thank you for sharing this. I'll definitely look it up. The person who introduced me to Naruto was like once I've read it, I could just watch the arcs I was interested to see animated if I didn't want to watch the entire thing. However because I enjoyed reading it so much I did watch the first part. Maybe I'll give Shippuden at some point and used them method you use.

> There is an FAQ on here, but I really wish mods would make one that debunks misconceptions, fake/fanmade, and outright lies that get passed around as truth.

I'll be sure to have a look at the FAQs. Tbf to the mods these days people dispute facts even with mountains of evidence 😭 so it might be futile to make FAQ for such.

Thanks for the great response!

Thank you, I appreciate that! I try to put "imo" as often as possible because of this reason. This fandom is a hostile environment at times. Being able to relate deeply to the characters is something I love about Naruto, and it's a thought-provoking look at the world through someone else's eyes.

I prefer Shippuden in some ways, but Naruto (as a series) was stronger in more ways. I hope you enjoy it!

> FAQ and disputing facts

You're right about that 💀 I think it would be nice to have a sign to tap and to provide the answers for anyone who genuinely cares about it. The disinformation and hating are at least getting strong pushback when it comes up.

You're welcome! I'm glad I could give one that was useful!

I was always curious to watch Naruto someday and this day finally arrived. As a DBZ absolute fan, Naruto seems pretty cool and who doesn't like ninja?

I originally planned to read the manga as I want to save the most time but am I missing something by skipping the anime?

That's how I usually do it with most of the anime. I read the manga and when a fight comes in I watch those episodes or a youtube video with only the fight.

I keep track of the correlation between episodes (anime) and chapters (manga), you can find a list, if not check a wiki for the episode, there should appear which chapters gather.

Usually the manga is more brutal and has more info about the story, also is the original idea of the author.

I usually skip the fillers and some websited tell you what fillers are worth watching others that you can skip, for example in naruto basically at certain point it's only fillers. ( it leaves around 410 episodes that aren't filler) I use these websites for example:

The music is COOL. AS. HELL. To Andy’s point. But also. The animation conveys a lot of humor and in some cases is absolutely breath taking. If you are like me and sometimes have the show on while I chore around the house, I set it to English and the voice acting is EXCELLENT. I cannot believe I waited this long to watch it. It’s my new fave of all time. Pro tip, be just a little high during the first few episodes as the background is explained.

Edit: I want to add more to the music point. I now listen to the soundtrack while I do all things. Run, clean, walk around. I ducking love the sound track. And to that point: watching the intro and outros will give you insight into more of the pathos of the series. It’s brilliant.

Naruto Bridge arc (1st one) is a nice beginning foundation, but definitely not top tier. Chunin Exams/Forest of Death (2nd one) is where the show really takes off which takes place immediately after NB arc.

Both without a question. The anime is great! Fights are cool, music both in the show and for openings is iconic! And I even think the filler can be fun. But I think the manga delivers the actual story of Naruto in the best and most accurate way. And Kishimoto is a great artist!

There any differences between the manga/ anime?

Posted by ShawnLikesMetal · in r/Naruto · 5 years ago

[Disclaimer] I've never actually read the manga.

  • Does the anime do things better? Besides of course being able to hear voices/ music and such and of course animating battle scenes.

  • But did the anime ever change things up, or add some spice here and there? Or remove/ add dialogue or maybe jutsus or even side characters?

  • Was there things you wish the Anime added to the series that Only the manga had? (Vise Versa)

  • For the Boruto series I heard boruto is more fillers/ non cannon while the managa focuses only on cannon and the makn story. Wasn't sure if it was the same for the Naruto series.

  • did the anime make any characters look different?

I'm not sure if there is a manga book per episode or if it's one of those thing like 1 manga book will cover like 10 or 15 episodes type of thing. Lol

I wasnt to haooy with the last 2 or 3 Boruto episodes released. In fact i was pissed. After 4 month of quarantine i was like... this is what we get? Watered down dora the expolorer! Naruto had some bad filler/ non cannon but boruto! Oh my god all of boruto filler is beyond horrible. Its half ass'd and so corny and hilarious. The only filler in boruto i enjoyed was the prison filler ark (especially since there was that naruto blood prison movie). And then when Boruto has to watch over the spoiled little rich kid boy who is obssessed with Ninja cards. Turns out he could do jutsus and throw shuriken. I fucking Love that little ark. I sure hope they bring that little kid back. Even in Naruto i always wanted them to bring the Crystal style user Guren back soooo bad!

  • in my opinion, no. I first experienced naruto through the manga, loved it, and tried to pick up the anime after, but it did not vibe at all with me. the pacing really threw me off and all in all the art and effort put into the manga makes it an instant win for me.

  • yeah it adds a few extra lines of dialogue here or there sometimes (or an extra animated scene, you know) but it doesn’t really deviate from the source material in a way that’s noticeable from what I’ve seen.

  • I don’t recall there being anything from the manga that wasn’t in the anime, other than censorship. I think the kakashi anbu arc would have been cool to see canonized in the manga. adds more to his character along with some others.

  • everything in boruto is canon. the manga tends to be more serious though and most of the anime feels more of a slice of life. Naruto has fillers like most shonen series but you can find lists that tell you where to skip so you can keep up with the canon material only.

  • Yes. Well, mostly in terms of color palettes but if you’re reading the manga you won’t notice aside from when you see the covers. some noticeable things are the anime changing naruto’s pale blonde hair and light blue eyes to a highlighter yellow and dark blue in the anime. Ino’s color palette also got changed up quite a bit (in the manga she has dirty blonde/orangish hair with green eyes, in contrast to her pale blonde hair and blue eyes in the anime.) along with a handful of other characters.

hope this helped some!

Hello guys I’ve watched the Naruto anime up until shippuden. I have a lot of downtime at work and I was thinking of picking up the manga set. Is it worth reading the manga? Are there big differences between the anime and the manga? I would like to get your opinions before I drop $170 for a manga set. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thank you

Well firstly you don't need to drop 170$ dollars. You could just read it on your phone or at your local library(I read the series during high school. And reread it on my phone).

There are not massive differences between both beyond some facial expressions and pacing. If you watched the anime, your buying the PHYSICAL Manga as a fan to support the series or because your a collector.

Main differences in the Manga are seeing the art in it's original form(which I consider way better), improved pacing, and significantly reduced censorship. Kakashi's full hand goes through Haku, instead of stopping at his chest. Stuff like that.

Of course you lose out on the voice acting, music, extended fights, etc of the anime.

Also $170 is unnecessary unless you really want to collect the physical manga. If you sign up for a Shonen Jump subscription you can read on your phone or in your browser. It's $4 USD a month.

I fully recommend reading the manga.

New Reader - Anime vs Manga

Posted by Emergency_Oven_9237 · in r/Naruto · 6 months ago

I recently started Naruto (on Volume 15 currently, near the end of the Chunin Exams I think) and have found it much more enjoyable to read than watch the anime (got to about episode 14). I wanted to see if I am missing anything only reading the manga vs watching the anime? I have heard a lot of people praise the anime, so just wanted to see if it is worth watching as well.

I think there are a lot of moments which in anime seems better because of the very nature of medium , background music , characters having a voice that we can hear .So , it is able to better capture the human emotions but it's just my experience.

But if you like manga maybe stick with it . I am someone who generally prefers anime over manga .

If you do watch it, I would recommend doing so with a fan edit that cuts out the filler and extended flashbacks/recaps/long shots that plague most old weekly anime. For example, Narucannon (a fan edit) cuts out around 50 hours worth of content from canon episodes without losing anything. LMK if you want any links, I got them in spades lol.

The animation I wouldn't say is darker, I mean, look at the genjutsu in the manga vs. anime. The one kakashi put Sakura in showed a very brutalized sasuke compared to the anime. Also, shikamarus arms melting from the bone as opposed to just him getting bendy lol. Those two are the first that come to mind.

I should have been specific. The Manga is darker.

It’s all up to the individual. For me the anime minus the more egregious filler far exceeds the source material. The plot is the exact same. I personally think there is some brilliant use of voice acting, soundtrack and animation in pivotal moments. Even a lot of the filler in Shippuden is excellent.

I'm not a fan of manga or comic books. I've just never been a fan, so I just assumed that mangas would be 1 to 1 with the animes.

No.

What the fuck.

There are so many god damn things in the manga that were changed or even completely REMOVED that affected the whole god damn show.

Plenty of moments with Sakura and Sasuke are glossed over, and honestly in general it seems like the anime treated Sakura even WORSE than the manga. She's not even that useless in the manga.

If I wasn't subbed here, I'd be forever convinced of things that are just... not true. The fuck is up with animes not being accurate to the lore?

100000000% I agree. To be fair, I do think animating already drawn characters is be easier than trying to create a character that people can all agree on from words.

In manga the characters are already drawn so everyone has that picture of them. When you're adapting a book, everyone has their own picture of what stuff looks like.

3 upvotes on reddit

I think the main reason is that anime adaptations aren't afraid to have voice acted thoughts. I think there's just a culture of adapting faithfully in Japan though because they don't even try half the time in America.

Certain writing decisions work better in manga format but the true answer is Studio Pierott has some opinions as to how to improve the story and they make those choices. Sometimes it works well like Shikamaru grieving for Asuma's death, sometimes it doesn't like Sakura's increased hesitancy to destroy Obito's Rinnegan, and on occasion they meant well but made an assumption that's going to come back to bite them later like Kurama's death scene.

As for Sakura, every character has their negative traits amplified but it's more noticeable in her case because she gets vastly more screentime than most other characters in the series.

15 upvotes on reddit
boston_2004 · 1 month ago

What assumption did that make with kurama death scene that will bite them later?

1 upvotes on reddit
S
superkami64 · 1 month ago

The studio assumed the Boruto manga undersold his death scene and that it had wasted potential to really hit the emotional beats it could've. The anime adaptation gave it as heartbreaking of a separation from Naruto as possible but what they hadn't considered was the manga underselling the moment on purpose due to what it had planned for the story so now the anime did too good of a job with the scene.

Shikamaru smokes after Asuma's death in the manga

More grotesque details that is censored in the anime (few examples are Kimimaro's flesh wounds if he pulls out a bone or Gato's death by Zabuza)

In the written Chunin exams, Sakura laughs at Naruto when he panics in the anime but in the manga she panicks as well and show genuine concern when she saw Naruto panicking

Minor color details (Rasengan is yellow, Gaara's hair is brown, etc.)

Kishi always wanted each character to have their own chakra color but the anime simplified things allot and so rasengan was turned blue. They “corrected” it in The Last

The color of Naruto's Chakra being yellow may seem like a minor detail but I've always seen it as pretty significant symbolism when it comes to his relationship with Kurama.

Once they start working together in the later stages of the series, Naruto's Nine Tails forms go from being red to yellow. Kurama himself develops a yellow chakra cloak around himself. It goes from a chakra that's described as burning to Naruto's (which Karin has described as "warm").

Without knowing that, I thought it was pretty random that Naruto suddenly starts glowing yellow in the last few stages of the series.

I don't think she blocked it, she tackled Naruto to the ground to save him, but the anime changed it so that Naruto just dodged for some reason. The anime also really exaggerated Sakura's temper which I think really contributed to the hate around her character

Wtf did Studio Pierrot have against Sakura? Like she isn't great in the manga, but they went out of their way to butcher her in the anime.

More on Number 13: Sasuke didn't just hold Sakura's hand, their fingers were interlocked.

Minor detail. Not sure why the Clowns changed it.

Sakura was kinder to Naruto

Sasuke did show emotions to the others(and sometimes did have a bit more with Sakura)

Pain was getting manhandled by Kurama

Thats all i remember, but there is a lot more

Because the studio has a weird vendetta against her. Similar to how Danmachi has a real focus on Hestia in the anime, but not near as much in the light novel. Studios man.

Between the manga and anime, is it the same general consensus as with one piece?

Posted by summonerofrain · in r/Naruto · 2 years ago

To explain what I mean, in the case of one piece, it seems that most fans agree that the manga is the better experience. Is it a similar case here or is it more split?

Anime has vastly superior fights. Manga has much better pacing. Although this might be pretty difficult, the best way to enjoy the series is probably to read the manga for the story but watch the anime whenever a big fight starts.

Manga's better for staying true to the characters, anime is better for fights.

There are very few anime where people will argue the manga or LN is worse, the original is almost always regarded as being better than the adaptation. The opposite is so rare, I actually can't think of an example off the top of my head.

Is the Code Geass manga better than the anime? I haven't read the manga, but the anime was quite good.

Manga is better. Though, some fights like Kakashi VS Obito and Naruto VS Sasuke (final) are better in anime.

Manga has better characterization and does not add lines or change things to make a character look bad like in the anime.

Fights are better they expand on them. That is one of the few things I give the anime

Is Reading Manga more worth it than anime?

Posted by Business-Airline5580 · in r/Naruto · 3 months ago

I just want to experience Naruto but I don't have time to watch episode with skipping fillers but is it going to change my experience? Is their particular arc which I should really watch in anime? If it comes to my preference then I like it read manga more than anime.

Manga Pros:
- Much lower time commitment as you can read multiple chapters in the time it takes to watch an episode
- Much greater variety of content as a shocking amount of manga never gets animated, especially in niche genres like scifi and horror if you're into those like me.
- Not censored as much

Manga Cons:
- No music, and sometimes anime music is killer
- Not as beautiful as anime can be
- Sometimes filler arcs and movies can be great.

I say yes, especially for manga that hasn't been adapted.

Oh yeah, the naruto movies are great.

Also I should apologize, I thought this was a question about general anime/manga not Naruto. It was late, I was sleepy, didn't seequestion beneath the title question.

I stand by what I said about Anime/Manga in general. It's good advice. For Naruto? Read the manga, watch the fillers and movies. The actual anime DRAGS. Like DBZ levels of dragging out episodes.

Can you specify arcs and moments if possible If it comes to spoilers if you know obitobi what if videos then I know that much extent but emotional moments are what I was gonna read for

Just read the manga then. It's quicker and very good. You can watch fights and moments after you've read them.

I just started manga and I like it better. Helps improve my reading, I can do it silently and the hours just fly by when I’m really into it.

Anime is great and all but I always feel my attention span slipping when I watch it now.

The best thing about manga is that it leaves more room for imagination so you can select how the characters sound, their mannerisms, the pace of interactions and battles, etc. yourself to form your perfect version of Naruto.

For example, when I read the manga, I imagine that Lee moved much faster in his fight against Gaara than what the anime shows. Makes the fight more epic (because I like Lee) and more enjoyable for me.

Naruto manga vs anime differences

Key Differences Between Naruto Manga and Anime

  1. Filler Episodes:

    • The anime includes a significant amount of filler content, especially in the original "Naruto" series, which can make up about 40% of the episodes. This content is not present in the manga and can disrupt the main storyline.
  2. Pacing:

    • The manga generally has a faster pacing, focusing on the core story arcs without the extended filler. The anime sometimes stretches out scenes or adds additional content to fill episodes.
  3. Art Style:

    • The manga's art is often more detailed and consistent, as it is created by Masashi Kishimoto. The anime may have variations in animation quality, especially in filler episodes or lower-budget arcs.
  4. Character Development:

    • Some characters receive more development in the manga, while others may have expanded storylines in the anime due to filler arcs. This can lead to differences in character motivations and backstories.
  5. Ending Differences:

    • The anime adaptation of "Naruto" concludes with "Naruto: Shippuden," which follows the manga closely but may have slight variations in the final arcs. The manga provides a more definitive conclusion to certain character arcs.

Recommendation: If you want the most authentic experience of the story, read the manga. It provides the original narrative as intended by the creator. However, if you enjoy animated action and voice acting, the anime is a great way to experience the series, just be prepared for the filler content.
