Caffeine in Coke Zero
Coke Zero has always contained caffeine. It was never marketed as caffeine-free, which seems to be a common misconception among some consumers [1:4]. The caffeine content is not particularly high compared to coffee, but it is present as a flavor booster and stimulant
[3:1]. For those looking to avoid caffeine, there is a caffeine-free version of Coke Zero available, although it may not be as widely distributed
[1:3],
[3:2].
Consumer Perceptions and Misunderstandings
Some consumers have expressed surprise upon discovering that Coke Zero contains caffeine, indicating a lack of awareness about the ingredients in soft drinks [3:3]. This highlights the importance of reading product labels for ingredient information
[3:6]. Additionally, some confusion may arise from the fact that other zero-calorie beverages, like Diet Rite, have been marketed as having zero everything, including caffeine
[1:2].
Artificial Sweeteners and Health Considerations
While Coke Zero is marketed as a zero-calorie beverage due to its use of artificial sweeteners like aspartame and acesulfame potassium, there are ongoing discussions about the potential health risks associated with these sweeteners [4:2]. Some studies suggest possible negative effects on metabolism and gut bacteria, though regulatory bodies like the FDA have approved their use
[4:12]. Consumers should be aware of these discussions and consider moderation when consuming artificially sweetened products
[4:10].
Conclusion
If you are sensitive to caffeine or prefer to avoid it, it's important to choose the caffeine-free version of Coke Zero. Always check the product label for caffeine content and be informed about the ingredients used in your beverages.
I could swear when Coke Zero first came out years ago it was marketed as zero everything. Is this a Mandela effect or am I correct? I remember my wife switching to it from Diet Pepsi due to her being told to limit caffeine consumption. Now she’s hooked on it and we rarely find the caffeine-free one in our area (Ohio).
No. It's always been caffeinated.
Could be thinking of Diet Rite? Because that used to advertise as zero everything. It still does, but it used to too.
You can get caffeine free
It was different from now but not caffeine free.
No never
I remember people at the time Coke C2 released thinking it was supposed to have half the caffiene like it did half the sugar or something, but no, it's always just been original coke with an artificial sweetener.
I just picked up a bunch of the Mt Dew Zero sodastream syrups from Target. Just looked at the caffeine content to see it’s only 48mg per 12oz. Additionally, the PepsiCo site lists the sodastream variety as 48mg per 14.9oz for zero sugar, 52mg for original, and 51mg for diet.
Does anyone know why they nerfed the caffeine content on the zero sugar for the sodastream?
Edit: someone pointed out to me that 14.9 oz is the size of the sodastream syrup bottles, and I misunderstood that to be the serving size. The serving size is the 1 and 1/3 Tbsp that is supposed to equate to 12oz of soda when mixed.
The soda stream syrups are more concentrated than fountain ones
What are people's opinions on the sodastream versions? I tried regular yesterday and it has that diet aftertaste
I got the zero sugar mix today and it's pretty good! I don't have a sodastream machine so I just mixed it with some bottled carbonated water. I like that you can make it as strong as you want.
Why does nobody ever mention that? This explains a lot now that I think back. It's 2 AM as I'm typing and I need to wake up at 6AM.
Well, there is a caffeine free version available
Are you serious? It’s common knowledge that it has caffeine. It also shows on the label that it contains caffeine. No one failed you by not mentioning it.
Now OP has energy to begin reading the labels.
Probably best to not sleep at all at this point.
Reading is fundamental.
You just figured this out? It's only a little, like 40mg or something like that. Coca Cola and other soft drinks have caffeine as a flavor booster/stimulant, but like I said it's not much. A cup of coffee has a lot more caffeine.
If it's a concern read the label, it will tell you if it has caffeine or not. No one is trying to trick you.
Some of my friends guzzle coke zero every day. Coca cola claims its zero calories. I googled and found it contains a type of fake sugar, but it indeed does have 0 calories (1 calorie in 12 oz but its rounded to 0 allowed by law). Is it really true? I found it really unbelievable.
In moderation, you're fine, in excess is where you run into risk:
Artificial Sweeteners: Coke Zero contains artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and acesulfame potassium. While these are approved by regulatory bodies like the FDA, some studies suggest that they may have potential health risks, including negative effects on metabolism, gut bacteria, and appetite regulation. There is ongoing research into their long-term effects.
Some research suggests that consuming artificial sweeteners may lead to weight gain and metabolic issues. This might be because they can trigger cravings for sweet, high-calorie foods, leading to increased calorie intake overall.
While Coke Zero does not contain sugar, it is still acidic due to the presence of phosphoric acid and carbonation. This acidity can erode tooth enamel over time, potentially leading to dental issues.
Artificial sweeteners might negatively affect gut microbiota, which plays a crucial role in overall health, including digestion and immune function.
There is some evidence that the phosphoric acid in sodas like Coke Zero may interfere with calcium absorption, potentially impacting bone health over time.
Aspartame is one of the artificial sweeters used in Coke Zero. The WHO's cancer research group, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, classifies it as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" based on studies it may cause certain blood cancers.
https://www.who.int/news/item/14-07-2023-aspartame-hazard-and-risk-assessment-results-released
Yeah. Soft drinks have had this for decades. Calorie free sweetener we can’t process, and otherwise it’s basically water and co2
Your body can process it. Aspartame is broken down by the body into two natural amino acids. Acesulfame potassium is absorbed into the blood, processed through the kidney and expelled from the body. Studies have been done on them since the 1960s and no proof has ever been found that they do any harm.
Ah, okay I did t know that about how it was metabolized. I guess what I really meant was just that your body can’t used it for energy, but that’s just my lay understanding. Thanks!
Yeah but speaking from experience, that doesn't mean too much won't give you a tummy ache. Btw it's closer to the original Coke formula than Diet Coke (which is a different recipe altogether).
It’s much better that Diet Coke to my taste buds.
Artificial sugars are zero calories but it's still bad for you.
So’s the sun.
The dose makes the poison. Fear-mongering a diet soda is so stupid.
Zero flavor
I’ve always wondered whether or not you can survive on only zero sugar drinks without too many health problems. Let’s assume there’s no acid. Could you?
I mean there’s plenty of research going on with aspartame and its potential long term side effects. Enough to make me cautious of anything using it, if it’s something I’d want to consume regularly.
all the newer ones seem to be the same at 165mg but the older ones vary. Is it just whatever the highest legal limit was at the time those specific drinks were made?
lol in germany all flavors have 160 mg per can as its the highest u can put in per law
Don't you have Bang there? They all come with 300mg per can. Unless they drop it for Germany....
Bang in Canada has 160 or 180mg, same with Reign
We don't have Bang in Germany and they wouldn't be allowed here
360 mg/l caffeine (so 160 mg/0.5l) is the legal limit
We dont have bang here normally . There are sometimes in line, but it is still limited to the law cause there isn't allowed to go above 160mg per 0,5 l
I'm just guessing, but maybe the caffeine has a taste? So they're putting in as much caffeine as they can without it affecting the flavour?
Caffeine is bitter. So it's definetly a taste thing.
never even considered that caffiene might have a taste ngl. but i could see that being possible.
It definitely does have a taste; It's very bitter in pure form
It does its extremly bitter in taste
Caffeine laws
I thought both are missing sugar or is big soda lying again.
Diet Coke uses more aspartame, which tastes a bit lighter. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar uses aspartame too, but combines it with acesulfame potassium, creating a more robust flavor that's closer to actual sugar.
incidentally, the sweetener in zero also suppresses foaming, so it's less likely to do the volcano thing when you open the bottle.
Diet Coke doesn't taste like Coke, so they released Coke Zero, which tastes more like Coke, but is still sugar free. I also heard they struggled to get men to buy diet coke as it had been marketed to women for years, so it was a fresh start for their marketing department.
More importantly is that they recently have newer formulas in substitute sugars so they can make Coke Zero taste more like regular Coke.
But they can’t replace Diet Coke, the older formula version, because that has its own distinct flavor which some customers do not want to give up.
People more recently switching from Coke to a diet version will prefer Coke Zero. And those who have gotten used to Diet Coke are less likely to make the switch over. I suspect one day Diet Coke will get phased out though.
diet coke was heavily marketed to women. men did not buy it. when pepsi came out with their pepsi max and men really went after it cocacola realized they are missing a market segment so they came out with coke zero, heavily marketed to men.
it has nothing to do with taste and everything with image
Coke Zero tastes three times better. On ice in a glass it's amazingly close to real coke, while DC still retains that metallic taste. And, jeebus, out of the can, I find Diet Coke virtually undrinkable.
Coke Zero tastes like a poor imitation of coke, it genuinely just makes me want to get a normal coke, diet coke has its own flavor and it’s delicious
At least in terms of marketing - Diet Coke has its own cult following. They like the taste. Coke isn't gonna change that. On the other hand Zero is targeted more for people who want the original Coke taste without sugar/calories.
Strangely enough I love diet coke but loathe coke zero.
But I hate Pepsi but enjoy Pepsi zero.
"Zero" sodas try to more accurately mimic the flavor of the original. "Diet" sodas have their own unique flavor.
Oddly I notice much less of a difference between diet Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper zero than between Diet Coke and Coke Zero. When the grocery store has multiple-buys-necessary sales, I will often get both of them among the selection. I probably couldn’t tell you which was which if you gave me a taste test.
You know, I actually dont really taste a difference between diet coke and coke zero, but I prefer them both over regular coke - I dont like the feeling of the sugary syrup on my teeth. And interesting that you prefer fountain coke over store-bought, I always find them a little too flat.

They have different flavor. Coke Zero tastes like regular coke, while diet coke is more obviously a different product
I expect that diet coke was made in era when trying to match the flavor of regular coke would be close but wrong, so it had to be its own thing. (Diet Coke is very old, while Coke Zero is a relatively recent product)
Coke Zero does not taste like Coke
At least for me, Coke Zero tastes meaningfully different from Coke; enough so that I can't treat it as a replacement.
But maybe for some people, it's close enough (or even spot on).
It's the same for me, they definitely don't taste the same. Strangely I can't handle Coke Zero much anymore even though I've acclimated to most artificial sweeteners. The first couple of sips are fine but there's a mounting artificial sweetener taste that just gets stronger and stronger with every sip. I can rarely finish a Coke Zero because of that.
Coke has a blurb about this on their website: https://www.coca-cola.com/us/en/offerings/faq/whats-the-difference-between-coca-cola-zero-sugar-and-diet-coke
The taste. Both drinks are sugar free and calorie free. Coca‑Cola Zero Sugar looks and tastes more like Coca‑Cola Original Taste, while Diet Coke has a distinct lighter taste. Did you know? Diet Coke launched in 1982, followed by Coca‑Cola Zero in 2005, and then renamed Coca‑Cola Zero Sugar in 2016.
It has to be ice cold.
Coke Zero is nasty at room temperature while regular Coke is still drinkable
I believe that Coke Zero has a flavor based on Coke Classic, and diet is its own thing.
Different sweeteners. Coke Zero tastes very similar to sugar coke (at least to me and I'm in Australia so we use cane sugar, never tried corn syrup Coke).
Diet Coke tastes like filtered swamp water, but enough people seem to like it that it's worth them keeping it around still.
Sweeteners were not as well developed in the 80s when they made Diet Coke, so they made a different formula that when combined with the artificial sweetener got as close to Coke as they could.
Coke Zero is more like the original Coke formula with sucralose subbed in for sugar. Hence the closer taste.
I’ve always suspected New Coke was an effort to take the Diet Coke formula and put the sugar back in so the drinks would have the same formula. I have no idea whether there is any evidence to support that.
I'm 100% with you, but I will say Coke Zero is the most tolerable one I've tried.
Coke Zero tastes nothing like Coke
I know there’s the aspartame thing yada yada but there’s gotta be something else
Because it has sweeteners
When a mf is too dumb to understand science.
When a mf is too dumb to understand im using slight sarcasm and expressing that it’s amazing that it’s 0 calories in a sideways manner and can’t connect the dots with it being in a sub called “random thoughts” rather than a more serious sub which would denote a genuine inquiry
Either that or you’re genuinely on the spectrum and take things very literally in which case I can’t really say anything negative about that

Is yada yada not enough reason?
If you drink it, you owe the Coca-Cola Company your firstborn child. They will be used to make Coca-Cola products like Oopma Loompas.
I know that coca cola contains caffeine, but that it contains significantly less of it than coffee. Is drinking a single can of coca cola enough to affect your sleep? I'm talking about the 355 mL (12 fl oz) sized can by the way.
Depends on stuff like tolerance and body mass presumably. A single can of coca cola iirc has a lower caffeine content than the average cup of coffee,
A person with a high caffiene tolerance might not see much if any effect, but ordinarily the caffiene content plus all that sugar should be enough to interfere with sleep
On top of that, a cup of coffee can vary in caffeine content anywhere between 150mg - 250mg.
Brain chemistry, too. People with ADHD process stimulants differently than neurotypical people.
I’ve got ADHD. I can drink a can of coke and get to sleep no worries.
34mg of caffeine in a can of coke. 12oz of coffee has well over 100mg so it’s not even close.
Yes it
CAN
I drink one diet coke after 6 and I'm up until 1.
I see what you did there 😏
It definitely could. Different levels of caffeine affect different people to varying degrees.
Yes, not to mention, the sugar.
For some people. Caffeine has no impact on my sleep. I can drink a 2 liter of soda or a cup of coffee and go right to bed.
For the past month I've struggled to find it.
I have untreated severe anxiety disorder, which I csnt treat because of protracted benzo withdrawal. This creates a perfect storm of caffeine sensitivity, which eats caffeine = bad anxiety attacks.
I get sick of Sprite, Orange, punch, etc. Sometimes I want a coke(but no anxiety attack)
I've raided all the local groceries stores multiple times this month. Once I found a total of four 12 packs, which I bought all 4. Also I've seen zero 2 liters.
I remember during the aluminum shortage or whatever they made less caffeine free so they could make more cans of caffinated coke.
Anyone else notice a shortage?
Same. I hate caffeinated beverages and it's what's mostly carried around me.
Yeah, minute maid 2 literally are what I've been getting while I cant fine the caffeine free coke.
I'm also fairly sensitive to caffeine, but I've shifted to the more "natural" sodas- things like Virgil's, Reeds, etc.
They aren't particularly healthy, as they still have tons of sugar, but they generally taste amazing and don't have any added caffeine.
You can generally get them at local natural food stores, or chains like Trader Joes or Whole foods.
Plenty of it at my store, If you can get Real Sugar Mountain Dew, I’ll trade you.
Is that still made? I also miss full calorie caffeine free mountain dew. Think that was discontinued 3 years ago.
I can still get 20oz from time to time but gets expensive. It's hit or miss with the 12pks in most places but missing from the northwest where I live for a few years.
Used to be a merchandiser years ago and the trend I see is that most big box stores only carry the main flavors to appeal to the masses, try mom and pop/smaller chain stores as they tend to carry a variety of different flavors as from what I'm seen, hopefully you find more soon
