What Redditors are Saying

Health Effects of Coke Zero

TL;DR Coke Zero, while free from calories and sugar, contains artificial sweeteners like aspartame. While there is debate over the health impacts of these sweeteners, current evidence suggests they are not significantly harmful. However, some users report increased cravings and potential insulin responses.

Artificial Sweeteners and Health Concerns

Coke Zero uses artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, which has been extensively studied. Many commenters argue that these sweeteners are not as harmful as often perceived [1:1], [4:6]. However, some studies suggest that artificial sweeteners might affect insulin response and gut microbiota [1:6], [2:3]. Despite this, no conclusive evidence indicates that moderate consumption poses significant health risks [5:2].

Weight Loss and Caloric Intake

Coke Zero is often praised for its zero-calorie content, making it a popular choice for those looking to reduce calorie intake without sacrificing taste [1:3], [3:3]. However, some individuals find that consuming diet sodas can lead to increased cravings for sweets or other high-calorie foods, potentially counteracting weight loss efforts [1:9], [5:3]. Others have successfully used Coke Zero to curb sugar cravings and aid in weight management [3:8].

Impact on Satiety and Cravings

There is a mixed response regarding how Coke Zero affects satiety and cravings. Some people find that it helps them avoid sugary snacks [1:2], while others experience heightened cravings for sweets after consumption [1:4], [3:7]. This variability may be due to individual differences in how people respond to sweet tastes, whether from sugar or artificial sweeteners [3:7].

General Health Considerations

While Coke Zero does not contain sugar or calories, it still shares some health concerns with regular soda, such as acidity, which can impact dental health [1:1]. Additionally, replacing water with diet sodas may lead to decreased hydration levels if not balanced properly [2:5]. Some users report feeling better after switching from diet sodas to water, suggesting that even zero-calorie drinks can have subtle effects on well-being [2:2].

Conclusion

Overall, Coke Zero can be a useful tool for reducing caloric intake and managing weight when consumed in moderation. However, individual responses vary, and some may experience increased cravings or other side effects. As with any dietary choice, it's important to consider personal health goals and preferences.

So what are your thoughts on Coke Zero having 0 calories and no sugar at all? Any downsides aside from aspartame. I mean any downsides in terms of weight loss and staying low on added sugars? Thoughts?

I've been addicted to coke zero for over ten years now, I always have one or two cans everyday (used to be 6 but I forced myself to reduce it) . This is bad for a lot of reasons but it's a great way to stay off sweets. I don't feel the need to eat anything between lunch and diner that way and I've never ever carved for candies since I'd rather have my cold coke zero instead.

As a side note, I hate the original coke or any other sweet drinks.

In my experience, I tend to have stronger cravings for sweet things when I include even minimal amounts of sweet things in my diet, including artificial sweeteners. It's a struggle, slipper slope type thing.

One of the best things I ever did for my health, and to lose weight was to stop drinking sodas entirely. That included my beloved diet coke which added little in terms of calories to my overall diet but was too often what I reached for when thirsty. I experienced increased weight loss, and I have kept that weight off for a couple of years now and going.

I disagree, there’s lots of studies no only on aspartame but with other sweeteners that show negative effects on the cephalon phase insulin response, decoupling of learnt association between sweet and energy as well gut microbiota. And I’m talking about RCTs in humans here.

I agree that there’s a lot on incongruence in the findings, but this is mainly due to things like body composition, phenotypes, habitual consumption or dose and frequency confounding.

These studies shouldn’t apply to the two sweeteners that are actually digested: aspartame and stevia.

Other sweeteners are reaching the gut so side effects on bacteria are possible.

People are super quick to believe bad things about aspartame and other artificial sweeteners, but they have been studied a decent bit and really don't look too scary. Sugar, on the other hand, is a well-documented dangerous substance when consumed at common levels.

Coke Zero, compared to sugar-containing Coke, will cause you to lose weight / gain-less-weight.

The acid in soda isn't great for your teeth.

I'm on OMAD and I used to be drinking coke zero everyday during my fasting window and I was super hungry and irritatable all the time. I stopped drinking coke zero and I just drank water during my fasting period and I feel lightyears better. Intermittent fasting has become so much easier from just this one change. Does anyone know why this is?

If people knew what these drinks are made out of I'm sure they'd steer clear. The industrial chemical processes that go into making a drink like coke zero, involving 100s of compounds created in dozens of processes, are as disgusting as they are impressive, in their own way. That stuff is basically toxic waste. I don't really understand why these companies are allowed to sell this shit without facing the kinds of market discipline, in terms of special taxes and controls at the point of sale, that other producers are faced with.

You dont need studies to know that reducing calorie intake from choosing zero drinks is benefical to weight loss, yet there are people claiming it does not help.

There are studies from 2021 showing that chosing zero over soft drinks has the same effect as drinking water. Zero drinks are 98% water so you can live on them an never get dehydrated. Drink as much as you wish and enjoy healthier life.

Because many people replace WATER with zero drinks.

Some even use it as a weak justification to eat more. As in "ok, since this is coke zero, I'll have another big mac".

And these people also get counted for stats.

So it's only beneficial if you are trying to loose weight and are reasonable and replace regular soda with it.

But again, many people are not honest with themselves.

At the end of the day as well a lot of people are banging on about the detrimental affects of coke zero (some of it sudo science lol, some of it maybe but needs more data, its laughable how one sided people go when they think they have all the answers - I digress), but if true that needs to be weighed up against the potential health impacts of someone being over weight or even considered obese (and that's not to say the two always go hand in hand!I appreciate life style and genetics will also play a hand for some people) - and I don't know you but if it's something you are looking into as per the post then it's perhaps something you are considering too.

So we either look at weak data about potential changes to gut microbiome which may or may not be anything - more data required. Or we look at the existing piles of data around how body composition can affect future health outcomes and chronic comorbidities. And suddenly it makes sense in perspective. If diet coke helps someone acheive theirs goals and reduce those proven risks then...in perspective that's winning. Everything in life has risk for goodness sake 😅 reducing it over all is the best deal.

I think that might be quite individual, because there's also data saying the opposite that some people also feel less inclination towards sweet foods as a result. I can't remember exact findings however, but could find some info if interested.

I understand that though 😊

From a personal experience standpoint, it very much stops me from eating sweet treats if I have a can instead, although not always because sometimes you just want what you want and it's certainly not a replacement for a good bit of chocolate 😆 especially during certain phases of the cycle.

How bad is coke zero?

Posted by PristineInvestment44 · in r/healthyeating · 2 years ago

Man, I must say. I have quit nicotine but coca cola has a stronger hold on me.

I cut out processed food, fried foods, overly fatty food, soda and juice. While I know these foods aren't entirely the enemy, I don't necessarily have a whole lot of room for them during the day as I'm on a high protein, low fat diet and I don't miss them much anyways.

I drink coke and have some fried foods on the weekends if I want to, but I find myself craving coke throughout the week. I do drink sparkling water but it's not the same! I drink coke zero because my calories would be better used elsewhere with something of nutritional value.

I used to have maybe 2 coca colas a day. How bad is coke zero? I don't know if I can be scared out of it at this point. Is it really that bad if I were to have a coke zero daily? or a couple days out of the week?

Enjoy your diet coke. I have some diet wisdom for you.

Coke zero and Pepsi max both have normal amount of caffeine, that's why they market it as closer to the sugar version. Diet coke has a zero caffeine version in gold cans that tastes off, shows how much we taste caffeine without realizing it.

Diet coke and diet Pepsi have double caffeine, that's the only difference and the taste difference comes from the caffeine. It's the original energy drink before the sugary tallboys became the norm. The caffeine dump is also why it's so popular, taste testers always prefer caffeine. Caffeine is addictive and we are wired for it, that's why people are addicted to it, I love it.

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good - you’ve already cut out so much I’m sure your diet is healthier than the vast majority. There's little to no evidence of risk for artificial sweeteners consumption. However people who consume diet drinks can over consume other things which have too much sugar in them because they feel good about cutting down on sugared drinks.

1 upvotes on reddit
T
Trent_3000 · 5 years ago

It depends on what you look at. It's better than regular coke when it comes to calories and there's no evidence to suggest that artificial sweeteners hold any more risk than the sugar of a regular coke.

However, there is something that a lot of people neglect about artificial sweeteners. When you ingest an artificial sweeteners you play a trick on your brain and body basically. Your brain experiences the sweet taste and prepares itself to receive sugar. Then it doesn't get any. If you're trying to lose weight this can be counterproductive because it can lead to more cravings because your body is craving real sugar.

1 upvotes on reddit
Khal_Aegon · 5 years ago

Soda in general isn't good for your health, but diet soda is marginally worse than regular soda, mainly because of the artificial sweeteners (namely aspartame).

Interestingly enough, I type this as I'm drinking a Cherry Coke Zero. Go figure

2 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 5 years ago

How would it be worse? Artificial sweeteners can be many times more sweet than fructose or glucose, hence their calorific content is negligible in comparison, since less is used. Aspartame is also a source of phenylalanine, an essential amino acid for us that isn’t provided through sugars.

Does Coke Zero raise blood sugar? Here’s what the data says

Posted by Impressive_Term_2791 · in r/Ultrahuman · 4 months ago

Coke Zero is a sugar-free soda made with artificial sweeteners like aspartame and Ace-K, designed to offer the taste of Coca-Cola without the sugar or calories.

But does it spike blood glucose? What the data says

Using real-time CGM data from the Ultrahuman Open Glucose Database around 77% of users showed a stable glucose response after drinking Coke Zero ,Most saw no rise >5 mg/dL in blood sugar

This is expected as Coke Zero contains no real sugar.

What else to consider

  • Caffeine (~34mg/can) may raise glucose slightly in sensitive individuals by increasing cortisol/adrenaline
  • Aspartame and Ace-K don’t spike glucose but may affect insulin in some cases , more research is needed

Long-term use may impact gut health or insulin sensitivity, but evidence is still emerging

Bottom line

Coke Zero doesn’t spike glucose for most people but individual responses can vary.

If you're managing blood sugar, occasional use is likely fine. But daily reliance on artificial sweeteners? Still a question mark.

Track your own response for better insights

How do the sweeteners in Coke Zero Sugar have a harmful effect?

Posted by robertlf · in r/nutrition · 4 years ago

I've been learning about the glycemic index and glycemic load and feel I have a good understanding of what they mean. I've been trying to find out what the GI or GL of a can of Coke Zero Sugar is and came across an article "What Everyone Must Know About Coke Zero and Diabetes". The article says "... researchers have found that people who regularly consume fake sweeteners have a dramatically increased risk of metabolic syndrome." The article goes on to say, "Basically, the more super sweet tasting sodas a person drinks (even if the sweetness is not coming from real sugar), the more they crave that same taste again. This can lead to overeating high calorie, high carb foods, which increase your blood sugar levels and may result in gaining even more weight."

Here's what I'm not sure about. If this article is true, is the metabolic syndrome brought on by the mere presence of the artificial sweeteners found in a can of Coke Zero (and the body's reaction to those sweeteners) or is it brought on as a result of eating high calorie and high carb foods which the article claims result from consuming those sweeteners? If one consumes one or two cans a week but otherwise follows a fairly strict low GI diet, is one still in danger of developing this metabolic syndrome? Thanks!

So they don’t impact appetite related hormones, subjective appetite or single meal intake.

In free living settings they reduce carbohydrate and sugar intake, in lean individuals protein and fat intake increases to hold energy intake constant. In overweight individuals this results in lower energy intake and facilitates weight loss.

There aren’t really any negative effects that you need to concern yourself with unless you drink like a crate of the drinks a day! Drinking them in moderation you are absolutely fine.

Haha reminds me of my father at his cardiologist appointment. He was asked how a man of his age (and um, weight was no doubt the unspoken factor) could have such clear arteries. My dad replied “coke!”.

Doctor was kind of shocked. “Coke?” And gestured as if he was snorting along the table. “Oh! No! Pepsi! I don’t drink anything else!” “Ohhhhhhhh, THAT coke! Well… whatever you’re doing, keep doing it!”

Mind you, I was pissed off at that cardiologist for saying that and egging him on. Pretty sure that side of our family has some genetics making us more immune to clogged arteries, but it doesn’t make that diet okay. He still has an absolute multitude of other health problems (cancers, bones so brittle his doctor was surprised he was still mobile, probably early stage dementia of some sort, etc), I wouldn’t have been thanking the coke/Pepsi too quickly….

It's terrible if you have a sedentary lifestyle and drink it daily. Empty calories and can also affect your teeth.

3x times a week if you're active and don't consume much sugar otherwise is fine. Could be affecting you in mild ways if you're sensitive to sugar, though.

Yes, but that's ok, just depends on your goals.

No one, from the average person to an elite athlete intakes 100% healthy products 100% of the time, from athletes that use soda Pop for mid or post-workout to the plethora of bodybuilders who eat pop-tarts, there's a benefit to treating yourself.

Yeah it’s definitely bad for you. But eating a 100% healthy diet and not exercising at all is bad for you too. So like we all have to find a balance and you’re doing this in moderation while having a very active lifestyle and that is completely different than someone who is sitting on the couch drinking liters of soda.

Summarize

Are carbonated drinks unhealthy or is it a myth? (Specifically Coke Zero since it’s 0 calorie 0 sugar)

Posted by CityRuinsRoL · in r/nutrition · 1 year ago

I’ve been avoiding them for the longest time but I’ve heard that Coke Zero has zero calories. If so, why is it unhealthy? Why are carbonated beverages considered unhealthy in general?

I used to drink 2L of Coke Zero a day and my teeth are fine. If you’re worried you can gargle with water afterwards - a lot of dentists recommend this after a meal to wash away the bad things from damaging or staining the teeth.

Aspartame is one of the most extensively researched compounds by the FDA and we have yet to find definitive evidence of negative health outcomes.

Diet Coke will be bad for your teeth and it may make you hungrier but other than that all we have is speculation of gut issues and not much else. It’s not healthy, but don’t be afraid to consume it, especially to replace sugary alternatives. It’s definitely far better than normal sugar-filled sodas.

Sure, but there are loads of studies suggesting health issues, it's just that they are often low quality.

On the other side there are no high quality long RCT showing that that there are no health issues.

So I don't think you can say anything strongly either way.

I think it's worth paying attention to those international health organisations, in general.

Having said that, I drink diet drinks, but I'm aware of potential risks.

New research point to this. “At a June 2023 meeting, an international expert working group classified aspartame as Group 2B, “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” Source

« It may make you hungrier ». Which sounds like increased insulin response? That’s not good.

I disagree. I started to really like coke zero last summer right around the time I started eating way better, no crap and very little sugar. Every soda was even better than it would taste when I drank it with junk. I think sweet drinks always taste better the less sweets you’ve been consuming.

I started working with a new restaurant client and they offer free lunch twice a week as a thank you to suppliers (it’s a family operated fast food style burger joint).

I went from zero diet cokes to 6-8 a month in less than a year. My dentist noticed straight away and told me to stop altogether before I make it worse.

I wouldn’t have thought that frequency in that timeframe would be enough to cause noticeable erosion of my enamel but I was very wrong!

I've been hearing that diet sodas interfere with gut biome, and that the gut biome is a lot more important than we thought.

But I don't drink diet drinks, so have never followed up to verify. This comment is basically a thread tag for informed answers.

That's a myth that they haven't proven outside of mice. They overload the mice with the sweeteners which is sometime 20 times the amount they should be giving them and then come to a conclusion that diet pop is unhealthy to humans. I believed the diet soda myth for YEARS until someone educated in nutrition sciences broke down the info to me.

It is true that drinking water helps controlling the blood sugar, and it is a recommendation drinking liquids if you have high blood sugars. Still, what you mom says its not true. You can’t drink both and think that the sugars are canceled. The sugars are going to be processed anyway. I wouldn’t recommend to drink any of them as a dietitian. Its okay to drink one once in a while, I would tell you to choose the Diet or Zero ones, although the sweeteners can make you more hungry later and they aren’t good for our gut. On the other hand, the regular sodas are full of sugars, which sometimes it’s acceptable (after a strong workout for example), the sugars would help refilling the muscle glucogen. Still, not the right option bc of all the additives like phosphoric acid, colorants.. Conclusion: these drinks are to have once in a while

health effects of coke zero

Key Considerations Regarding Coke Zero:

  1. Artificial Sweeteners: Coke Zero contains aspartame and acesulfame potassium, which are artificial sweeteners. While they are generally recognized as safe by health authorities, some studies suggest potential links to metabolic issues and cravings for sweet foods.

  2. Weight Management: Some people use Coke Zero as a calorie-free alternative to sugary drinks, which can help with weight management. However, the long-term effects of consuming artificial sweeteners on weight loss are still debated.

  3. Dental Health: Like other sodas, Coke Zero is acidic, which can contribute to tooth enamel erosion over time, even though it doesn't contain sugar.

  4. Caffeine Content: Coke Zero contains caffeine (about 34 mg per 12 oz can), which can lead to increased alertness but may also cause jitteriness or sleep disturbances in sensitive individuals.

  5. Potential Health Risks: Some studies have raised concerns about the long-term consumption of diet sodas and their association with health issues like metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes, though more research is needed to establish definitive links.

Takeaways:

  • Moderation is key. While Coke Zero can be a low-calorie alternative to sugary sodas, it's best consumed in moderation.
  • Pay attention to how your body reacts to artificial sweeteners and caffeine.
  • Consider overall dietary habits and lifestyle choices when incorporating Coke Zero into your diet.

Recommendation: If you're looking for a healthier beverage option, consider water, herbal teas, or sparkling water with a splash of natural fruit juice as alternatives to soda. These options can hydrate without the potential downsides of artificial sweeteners and acidity.
