Sweeteners Used
The primary difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke lies in the sweeteners used. Diet Coke exclusively uses aspartame as its artificial sweetener [1:1]
[2:1]. On the other hand, Coke Zero combines aspartame with acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) to create a flavor profile that more closely resembles regular Coca-Cola
[1:1]
[3:1]. This combination of sweeteners in Coke Zero is intended to mimic the taste of sugar more effectively than aspartame alone
[3:9].
Flavor Profile
The flavor profiles of Coke Zero and Diet Coke are distinct. Coke Zero is designed to taste more like the original Coca-Cola, while Diet Coke has its own unique flavor that was developed when artificial sweeteners were less advanced [4:3]
[5:6]. Some people describe Diet Coke as having a sharper or lighter taste, whereas Coke Zero is often described as having a more robust and closer-to-sugar taste
[1:3]
[3:1].
Market Positioning and History
Diet Coke was introduced in 1982 and was formulated to have a distinct taste from Coca-Cola due to the limitations of sweeteners at the time [4:3]. It quickly became popular, even influencing the formulation of New Coke
[1:6]. Coke Zero, launched in 2005, was created to offer a sugar-free option that tastes more like regular Coke, catering to those who prefer the classic Coca-Cola taste without the calories
[5:7]. The marketing strategies also differ, with Diet Coke historically being marketed towards women and Coke Zero towards men
[4:8].
Consumer Preferences
Consumer preferences vary widely between the two products. Some individuals prefer the distinct taste of Diet Coke and find Coke Zero too sweet or not a suitable replacement for regular Coke [1:8]
[3:10]. Others appreciate Coke Zero's attempt to replicate the original Coca-Cola flavor and find it more palatable
[3:3]
[5:5]. These differences in taste perception highlight the importance of personal preference when choosing between these beverages.
In conclusion, while both Coke Zero and Diet Coke are sugar-free and calorie-free, they cater to different taste preferences and market segments through their distinct formulations and flavor profiles.
Coke Zero uses the artificial sweetener "Ace K" (acesulfame potassium) and Diet Coke does not. They both use Aspartame as well.
Cole Zero also has Stevia in it now. You are right about Ace K. Diet Coke is just Aspartame alone as I remember it.
They started putting stevia in zero too lol found that out today
Diet Coke was re-formulated in the mid 80s to match the taste of New Coke, but people actually liked the new Diet Coke formula, so they kept it the same after shifting the main product to Coca-Cola "Classic." Coke Zero is formulated to match the taste of the current Coca-Cola Classic/"Original Taste."
Diet tastes sweeter. Zero tastes sharper.
I taste them backwards. Zero always tastes flatter and diet coke has a sharpness to it.
I think flavour wise, Coke Zero is supposed to be closer to regular Coke while Diet Coke is much more distinct.
I’m a life-long Diet Coke drinker and I can definitely taste the difference. Zero is too sweet. I don’t want something that tastes like Coca-Cola. I want something that tastes like Diet Coke. I have the same feeling for Diet Dr. Pepper. And I don’t think I’m alone. The market must be big enough to make maintaining the “Diet” branding in those two instances worth it.
Diet Coke was introduced in 1982. But at the time, the executives didn’t want r to introduce a drink that tasted similar to Coca Cola for fear that it might cannibilize sales. So they created a drink with a completely different flavor profile than Coca Cola. It turned out to be a decent idea, because Diet Coke was incredibly popular. It rapidly rose to being in the top 5 selling soft drinks.
In fact, it sold so well, that when they decided to create New Coke, they based the formula off of Diet Coke.
Coke Zero was introduced in 2005. Coke Zero was specifically formulated to taste like Coca Cola. The two reformations its had so far have been to bring the flavor profile more in line with Coca Cola.
So Coke Zero and Diet Coke have two very different flavor profiles. Coke Zero is supposed to taste like regular Coke. Diet Coke is not.
As a long-time, bitterly (no pun intended) disappointed Tab drinker here, I can tell you neither comes close (of course, that is just my opinion). Diet Coke is a bit "sharper" than Zero sugar, which seems to have a more "lemony" taste. Regardless, their flavor is quite different.
Funny thing is I was at my dance studio and they were serving both and my instructor asked me how I could possibly taste a difference. Blind I could tell the difference, literally, five out of five times and I could have gone on forever. Funny thing is, the new Diet Pepsi (caffeinated) is about the closest to Tab I've found, though still nothing like it. :(
Coke Zero tastes better
Always thought it was close to the New Coke formula.
I think they originally tried to replace Diet Coke with Coke Zero but so many people like the taste of Diet Coke so they make both.
What’s the difference between a Coke Zero and a Diet Coke? I am trying to cut down on drinking my calories but am not in love with water, so I wanted to drink some sort of pop. Which should I go with?
They use different formulas. Diet coke is an older formula, and has a distinct flavor from regular coke. Coke Zero tastes like regular coke.
Both have zero calories, and work for calorie cutting.
So theoretically if I were to have one or two of these a day I wouldn’t be hurting myself calorie wise?
You could have 1,000 a day and not hurt yourself calorie wise.
The sweetener they contain is undigestible, it passes completely in your urine. Any calories in the can are negligible.
Upvote for using “pop”. But the other answers are right. “Diet” pop uses aspartame. “Zero” pops use the newer generations of artificial sweeteners.
Michigander here
Diet coke only uses aspartame while coke zero uses both aspartame and another artificial sweetener called Ace-K. Some people have higher sensitivity to aspartame, so coke zero tastes less chemically.
Diet Coke tastes like floor cleaner. Coke Zero tastes like emptiness.
Carbonated water, friend. Leave the fake sweeteners on the shelf.
Can’t do the bubbly water
I thought both are missing sugar or is big soda lying again.
Diet Coke doesn't taste like Coke, so they released Coke Zero, which tastes more like Coke, but is still sugar free. I also heard they struggled to get men to buy diet coke as it had been marketed to women for years, so it was a fresh start for their marketing department.
More importantly is that they recently have newer formulas in substitute sugars so they can make Coke Zero taste more like regular Coke.
But they can’t replace Diet Coke, the older formula version, because that has its own distinct flavor which some customers do not want to give up.
People more recently switching from Coke to a diet version will prefer Coke Zero. And those who have gotten used to Diet Coke are less likely to make the switch over. I suspect one day Diet Coke will get phased out though.
Coke Zero tastes three times better. On ice in a glass it's amazingly close to real coke, while DC still retains that metallic taste. And, jeebus, out of the can, I find Diet Coke virtually undrinkable.
Coke Zero tastes like a poor imitation of coke, it genuinely just makes me want to get a normal coke, diet coke has its own flavor and it’s delicious
Oddly I notice much less of a difference between diet Dr Pepper and Dr Pepper zero than between Diet Coke and Coke Zero. When the grocery store has multiple-buys-necessary sales, I will often get both of them among the selection. I probably couldn’t tell you which was which if you gave me a taste test.
"Zero" sodas try to more accurately mimic the flavor of the original. "Diet" sodas have their own unique flavor.
At least in terms of marketing - Diet Coke has its own cult following. They like the taste. Coke isn't gonna change that. On the other hand Zero is targeted more for people who want the original Coke taste without sugar/calories.
Strangely enough I love diet coke but loathe coke zero.
But I hate Pepsi but enjoy Pepsi zero.
Diet Coke uses more aspartame, which tastes a bit lighter. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar uses aspartame too, but combines it with acesulfame potassium, creating a more robust flavor that's closer to actual sugar.
incidentally, the sweetener in zero also suppresses foaming, so it's less likely to do the volcano thing when you open the bottle.
You know, I actually dont really taste a difference between diet coke and coke zero, but I prefer them both over regular coke - I dont like the feeling of the sugary syrup on my teeth. And interesting that you prefer fountain coke over store-bought, I always find them a little too flat.
It’s a synergistic effect; ace-K wouldn’t taste right by itself. Aspartame has a delayed sweetness compared to sugar, but ace-K has an immediate sweetness that tails off quickly. When you combine the two, they have a rounded sweetness more similar to sugar.
Flavor. Diet coke is flavored differently. Coke 0 is flavored like regular coke
Really? I feel like Diet Coke tastes more like the original than Coke Zero.
When Diet Coke first came out, the technology didn't exist to make it artificial sweeteners taste like sugar. Therefore, they couldn't make it taste like Coke. Instead, they came out with a completely new flavor that slightly resembled Coke but worked better with the artificial sweetener flavor.
Over time, technology improved, and we now have artificial sweeteners that resemble real sugar much better. Coke Zero was developed because its flavor more closely matches that of regular Coke. Diet Coke still exists because there are many people who prefer its flavor.
The artificial sweeteners used in Diet Coke and Coke Zero depend on the market. Currently, Diet Coke uses mostly aspartame with some cyclamates and acesulfame potassium, while Coke Zero uses mostly acesulfame potassium with some aspartame.
On a related note, the ill-fated New Coke of the 1980s was loosely based on the flavor of Diet Coke, just with sugar instead of artificial sweeteners.
I always thought the terrible taste of Diet Coke was attributed to the artificial sweetener, not that they actually planned on it tasting that bad. TIL
Thanks. IIRC they both have natural flavors though. I meant to say artificial sweeteners.
Short answer, is prior to Coke Zero, diet Coke was seen as a "girly" drink. Coke wanted a no-calorie soda to market towards men. So, different formula, in a different can, with more manly colors (black and red as opposed to silver) and you have yourself a new soda.
Coke Zero is supposed to taste more like real Coke than diet Coke, but since diet has been around for so long and so many people like it, Coke wasn't about to have another "new Coke" fiasco by replacing a popular soda with a new formula.
This is true, however keep in mind that Coke Zero was a reaction to Pepsi Max, which had been pushing the 'masculine but no sugar' aspect of the drink. So Coke Zero was a way to address Pepsi Max.
Now in some regions of the world Coke Zero has been replaced with Coke No Sugar, which tastes more like 'real' coke and does away with the prior branding (which to be honest had softened over time anyway).
Back in the 80s when they first got artificial sweetener available and started making diet soda, they noticed that coke didn't taste very good when using the usual recipe and replacing the sugar with sweetener.
They solved this by formulating an entirely new cola recipe that tasted better with artificial sweetener, which was released as diet coke. Pepsi was winning the soda wars at the time, but this new soda was so popular that they actually saw it as a solution. They released "new coke" using the diet coke recipe and real sugar.
So basically, diet coke is the new coke recipe with artificial sweetener. Coke zero is the original coke recipe with a different type of artificial sweetener.
That's really interesting. I knew that people hated new Coke and I thought I'd never be able to try it - now I know it's just good ol gross diet Coke.
Diet Coke is marketed towards women (with silver, white and sometimes red colours) and comes in bottles and cans
Coke Zero is marketed towards men (with black and red colours on the bottles)
Coke Zero is slightly "sweeter" tasting than diet coke, I've had enough of both over the years to be able to tell the difference
I mean I think Coke Zero was marketed towards people who liked Coke but not Diet Coke and wanted a sugar free option.
I can't stand diet coke or coke Zero but I'll take a Pepsi Max over a Pepsi everytime.
[removed]
They have different flavor. Coke Zero tastes like regular coke, while diet coke is more obviously a different product
I expect that diet coke was made in era when trying to match the flavor of regular coke would be close but wrong, so it had to be its own thing. (Diet Coke is very old, while Coke Zero is a relatively recent product)
At least for me, Coke Zero tastes meaningfully different from Coke; enough so that I can't treat it as a replacement.
But maybe for some people, it's close enough (or even spot on).
I used to prefer Diet Coke for this exact reason, but then I didn’t have a real Coke for a very, very long time (it’s probably been over a year now) and all of a sudden Coke Zero is delicious and totally tastes like Coke
It's the same for me, they definitely don't taste the same. Strangely I can't handle Coke Zero much anymore even though I've acclimated to most artificial sweeteners. The first couple of sips are fine but there's a mounting artificial sweetener taste that just gets stronger and stronger with every sip. I can rarely finish a Coke Zero because of that.
Coke Zero does not taste like Coke
Different sweeteners. Coke Zero tastes very similar to sugar coke (at least to me and I'm in Australia so we use cane sugar, never tried corn syrup Coke).
Diet Coke tastes like filtered swamp water, but enough people seem to like it that it's worth them keeping it around still.
Sweeteners were not as well developed in the 80s when they made Diet Coke, so they made a different formula that when combined with the artificial sweetener got as close to Coke as they could.
Coke Zero is more like the original Coke formula with sucralose subbed in for sugar. Hence the closer taste.
I’ve always suspected New Coke was an effort to take the Diet Coke formula and put the sugar back in so the drinks would have the same formula. I have no idea whether there is any evidence to support that.
Coke has a blurb about this on their website: https://www.coca-cola.com/us/en/offerings/faq/whats-the-difference-between-coca-cola-zero-sugar-and-diet-coke
The taste. Both drinks are sugar free and calorie free. Coca‑Cola Zero Sugar looks and tastes more like Coca‑Cola Original Taste, while Diet Coke has a distinct lighter taste. Did you know? Diet Coke launched in 1982, followed by Coca‑Cola Zero in 2005, and then renamed Coca‑Cola Zero Sugar in 2016.
They use different artificial sweeteners and serve two different market segments.
In my personal opinion Coke Zero tastes like Coke (once you acclimate to the sweetener taste) and Diet Coke tastes like Diet Coke.
I believe that Coke Zero has a flavor based on Coke Classic, and diet is its own thing.
Coke Zero tastes nothing like Coke
"Zero" is marketed to men, "Diet" is marketed to women.
I'm serious.
The sweeteners used are different, but this is the correct answer. Diet Coke is my beverage of choice because it is what my dad drinks. It's been around the longest. The "zero" and other diet beverages are a little newer and I like them just fine as well. Honestly, I'm just used to the silver cans.
If you put them next to each other I could probably tell the difference in taste, but I will just get whatever is calorie free and on sale. The difference between coke and pepsi is bigger, but I will still get either. All things being equal, I would probably take diet coke out of the fountain or bottle and diet pepsi out of a can. I can't explain it, but diet pepsi in the can just hits different for me.
The best diet soda, both in general and in how close it is to the OG product, is undoubtedly Diet Dr. Pepper. Not sure why I don't buy that to be honest.
Diet Coke also has more caffeine than Coke or Coke Zero (46 vs 34mg, I think).
Diet Coke is a bit different than most other diet sodas. Instead of taking Coca-Cola and basically switching the sugar for zero calorie sweetener they just made a whole new diet cola from the ground up. That's why Diet Coke tastes so much different from Coca-Cola compared to Coke Zero.
Diet was made first as a sugar free alternative but it has that distinct "diet" taste that's different from the regular version. The Zero version was made years later as we developed better sugar free sweeteners and tastes closer to the original version. So the Zero version is the sugar free soda that actually tastes like the real thing.
The reason for this is due to the New Coke fiasco where they changed the recipe of Coca-Cola and customers were unhappy if not downright outraged. Instead of just changing the recipe they released a new product hoping that customers would eventually switch over (The original colour scheme for Coke Zero looks identical to Diet Coke as it was thought to eventually replace it).
Coke Zero in the beginning didn't do that well, Diet Cola had a loyal customer-base and the non-diet customers had a pretty negative view of diet sodas due to the associated diet taste. Lots of marketing as well as the passage of time and people are increasingly adopting the Zero version over both the Diet versions as well as the original version.
Yep - this is correct. There might be different marketing, but this is the reason the Zero version exists at all alongside Diet.
Awesome explanation, thanks!
Zero versions, especially with clear soda for some reason, taste far more like the original. I love me some sprite zero lol.
Diet pop has a diet taste that some people love but I can't stand lol.
The sweeteners and formulations are slightly different. It's strictly down to taste. The names themselves are marketing.
Diet lighter taster, Zero closer to the original version.
What do people prefer more? I grew up drinking Diet Coke and I think it tastes almost more carbonated/ sour in a way which I like !
I like Zero Sugar Coke but did not like original Coke Zero from 2005 (which they stopped making in 2017), the newer (current) version tastes better.
diet Coke is it's own entity, was not meant to taste like anything else Coca-Cola had made, so that is timeless to me, like TaB was.
But I prefer Zero Sugar Coke if I had to chose between the two variants.
How does coke zero sugar taste vs the coke zero from 2005?
They reformulated it in 2017 and made it taste smoother and a bit sweeter, and they renamed it Zero Sugar Coke.
People kept complaint that the old formula tasted too much like regular Coke and diet Coke mixed together, so I guess after 12 years of complaints they did something about it...took a good 2 years of taste tests we had to conduct, but nearly everyone prefers the Zero Sugar Coke taste, now that rumor of it being mixed together is no longer said anymore.
I drunk more Coke Zero than was possibly healthy between the years 2005 and 2022 (we stopped making it later because of... brand deals I think?). The number of liters drank must have numbered in the thousands.
Despite this, I literally cannot tell the difference between Coke Zero and Coke Zero Sugar.
I feel like the black can Zero tasted much more like the regular Coke, that’s just me though. The new one still is pretty delicious.
I agree. The newer version is a little sweeter, much like the difference between 1960s Coke and the New Coke. But I still love my Coke Zero
Diet Coke is the sugar free version on the 'New Coke' fiasco from 1985.
Coke zero 100 times out of 100
It tastes more like Coke
I can’t stand Diet Coke (or Diet Pepsi, or most “diet” drinks).
But Coke Zero is incredibly decent — especially with food. It’s not quite as good as full sugar Coke, but it’s shockingly good for a no-calorie soda.
Coke Zero is friggin delicious
The new Coke Zero Sugar is a revelation and I love it so much.
As someone who LOVES Diet Dr. Pepper, I can’t do Dr. Pepper Zero. It’s way too flat…not nearly enough carbonation.
dont @ me
This is 100% true imho (excluding the new blueberry and strawberry flavors), but my paranoid ass will still ALWAYS choose Diet Coke over Coke Zero when it comes to fountain drinks just so I Know For Sure that it’s NOT the bubbly corn syrup juice
The trick is to stick your finger into the drink and rub it between your fingers. If it’s sticky, it’s real coke. If it’s more watery, it’s Coke Zero.
The bubbles are different colors, too. Errr maybe that’s Diet Coke and regular. But I could’ve sworn diet has darker bubbles and regular comes out a bit lighter and brighter.
I’m paranoid about this because I tried it the other day with Pepsi and Diet Pepsi and neither was sticky
That’s because Pepsi is a lot more “effervescent” than regular Coke. Coke is like syrup in a can.
While I agree that Coke Zero technically tastes better, I still prefer the chemical laden liquid that is my beloved Diet Coke
Agreeeed plus Diet Coke is less acidic and less aggressively carbonated? Which is a much better mouth/throat feel lmao
all these goddamn cokes, i don't know the difference. all i know is that if it's sugar free and tastes like cola, i want it in me
I'm right there with you! I'm a simple gal; I just want sweet bubbly chemicals with negligible calories.
I already had some opinions on this but I recently learned that Diet Coke has 12 mg more caffeine per can than Coke Zero! I have priorities, Diet Coke 4EVA
I actually will choose one or the other depending on whether it's earlier or later in the day, how much of a buzz I want in other words haha.
pepsi max is a million times better than the sugary sweet crap that is regular pepsi.
Did you guys taste any difference? Both are sugar free, though. Which one do you like more? For me, I usually buy the zero sugar one.
Zero sugar is supposed to taste more like normal Pepsi
*lol* sugar free/diet/light sodas tasting like the original? Good joke.
Coke Zero tastes far more like regular Coke as compared to Diet Coke.
Oh! I see, that's why I like the zero sugar one more.
But it doesn’t. I can’t drink Pepsi Zero at all.
Zero sugar Pepsi products used to have way more caffeine, but unfortunately they have reformulated them and they lost about half their kick. Now they are about a normal level. I think the only zero sugar product left that still has extra caffeine is Mountain Dew Zero
Zero has a different sweetner package with more sucralose.
I'm more of a diet fan. I find diet much more sweet although zero sugar is starting to grow on me as I finally got my hands on it in Canada (with the new formula.)
But the zero sugar one has slightly more caffeine. But if I taste these two simultaneously, I can't find any difference instantly...
Did they update the Canadian zero sugar to not just be Diet Pepsi with more caffeine?
Definitely prefer diet Pepsi over zero
Same here, I like the taste better.
if im on a low/no sugar diet, can I drink diet coke? or is it harmful in some way?
People will argue both sides so it really depends on you. Some say the artificial sweeteners make you eat more or can result in feeling lethargic. If your calories are in check there’s no real harm.
I hear this a lot and it’s a total misunderstanding of the data. No drink can “make you eat more” unless it destroys your brain or something, you aren’t a mindless being without critical thinking skills. Even if a zero calorie drink makes you hungrier, that’s not the same as what you are saying.
no but the drink itself doesn't add on to calories right? like I won't gain extra weight/fat by drinking that right?
Right. The only thing to worry about at most is the sodium. Losing weight with diet soda is easy if one doesn’t eat more than they should. Some people overestimate how much to eat just because diet soda has no calories.
Test and find out. Don't know how but I did get into coke zero pretty heavy and found that it made me get fatter. Totally anecdotal of course, but I know that I can't drink the stuff if I want to be as healthy as possible. At the very least I treat it as a vice. Why do I need it? Logical answer is that I do not. It obviously triggers something with my metabolism, which I find disturbing because the intention is that it should not.
Ding ding, correct.
Relevant pubmed studies:
Far from great studies. Sucralose is hardly used and known to increase insulin levels. Second study doesn't show any insulin increase besides the obvious case with sucrose. Aspartame does not increase insulin levels
Great study, thanks. Seems Stevia is a pretty healthy option both from your second study and other studies I’ve read. Haven’t seen anything bad about it
Artificial sweeteners have very negligible calories. Aspartame, for example, has 4 Calories per gram (it is really a dipeptide of amino acids). But since it is almost 200 times sweeter than sugar, you need only super small amounts of it. A diet drink can have 5 or 10 Calories per serving and be allowed to say practically 0 calories. So you don't even have to worry about the literally few calories in your favorite diet drink, even drinking several a day.
Ruins your teeth even without the sugar (due to the acids used )
Plain carbonated water is fine, though, right?
Acidic drinks (including carbonated water) do damage the enamel on your teeth. But with all things, the dose makes the poison. As long as you consume them in moderation your teeth will be fine.
