TL;DR
General Tips and Strategies
Cuphead is known for its challenging gameplay, requiring players to learn boss patterns and refine their skills through repeated attempts. It's normal to die frequently, but each defeat helps you understand the bosses' movesets better [1:1]
[5:4]. Many players suggest remapping controls for a more comfortable experience, such as using shoulder buttons for shooting
[1:2]. Additionally, taking breaks can help reset your mindset and improve performance
[1:3].
Weapon and Item Recommendations
Certain weapons and items can greatly enhance your gameplay. The Roundabout weapon is highly recommended for most bosses due to its versatility [3:5]. The Smoke Bomb is another useful item, particularly in run 'n' gun levels, as it allows you to dodge attacks effectively
[3:6]. Players also advise experimenting with different weapons and supers to find what works best for each level
[3:1].
Boss-Specific Strategies
For those aiming to achieve S ranks or tackle Expert Mode, focusing on each boss's unique patterns is crucial. Some players have shared detailed strategies for specific bosses, including methods to "cheese" them by exploiting hitboxes and hurtboxes [4:2]. While these advanced techniques require practice, they can significantly ease the difficulty of certain fights.
Mindset and Perseverance
Cuphead demands perseverance and a positive mindset. Many players emphasize the importance of muscle memory and skill progression over time [5:2]
[5:6]. It's essential to remain patient and not get too frustrated with repeated failures. As one commenter humorously noted, achieving mastery in Cuphead is akin to "git gud"—a process of continuous improvement and adaptation
[5:8].
Additional Resources
If you're looking for more structured guidance, consider following community-created guides that detail strategies for each boss and level [4:1]. These resources often provide insights into glitches, specific tactics, and general tips that can aid both newcomers and experienced players alike.
I just got the game today and any tips for this game
Remap the controls!!! If you're a console player, make B jump and a shoulderbutton shoot
practice makes perfect. you will fail many times. sometimes a nights rest is all you need. oh and dont break your console and/or tv.
Yeah I've only realy seen speed runs of it
Take your time, it's absolutely part of the game with the bosses to die a lot. You'll learn their movesets and patterns as you go. Also since you've seen the speedruns, know that the runners make it look stupid easy, they can get quite tough!
As most of you probably know by now, the Cuphead DLC is coming out at the end of the month. So to celebrate, I decided I’m going to be posting tips for each boss in the main game.
These tips will be based on my experiences on achieving the S rank for all bosses, including advice on what weapon setup to take and how to evade all the different attacks. I will be posting tips for one boss a day, every day, until the release of the DLC.
I’ll be listing the bosses in order, starting with The Root Pack. I’ll be posting every day, so stay tuned if there’s a boss you’re still working on and you need tips!
Can I have some Expert Mode Tips
All of my tips will be based on Expert mode and my personal strategies for achieving every S rank. I’ll be posting each boss in order, so keep an eye out for whichever bosses you need help with!
Well I gonna try S Rank but I lose my sanity
I started playing this week and the game kicked my ass, how are people getting S ranks on every boss and P ranks on every run and gun when I got the stage 3 with sweating my ass this much, any tips to “get good” please?
Try not to get too frustrated when you die, easier said than done I know, but it will happen a lot. The key is just getting used to each boss's movement/attack patterns. Just keep at it and you'll soon notice yourself getting better and further.
I was where you were once, I think it's safe bet to say that most everyone here was. But, like all of us, through time and perseverance you'll get there.
If you ever need help beating any specific boss there's plenty of tips on here already. If you can't find what you need then just ask. Though try to be specific in regards to what you're struggling with, such as which part of the R&G or phase of the boss fight you're dropping health on.
Use Roundabout. That should get you through 99% of the game.
I use roundabout but am currently stuck at the run n gun with woodpeckers. I can get to the boss with 3-4HP but die Every time with only a few more hits to go. The frustration and rage quits are real...
I don't actually have the game, but I do have some tips from watching other people play!
Hopefully that helps!
Unless you’ve beaten every boss and seen the credits roll, don’t worry too much about rank.
You can’t actually get an S rank until you have unlocked Expert Mode though finishing the game. But even getting A rank doesn’t give you anything extra to help out.
Just focus on getting through all the fights alive, getting your coins on run ‘n’ gun levels and talk to everyone on the map for extra stuff.
Don’t forget to equip stuff you buy and try out new weapons and supers.
Even if they seem ineffective, make sure you understand how they work, because I guarantee you’ll find yourself in situations where switching weapons will help a ton.
Once you’ve cleared every fight, if you want more, you can go back and try to A Rank them, or clear them in Expert Mode, or S Rank them in Expert Mode.
Whatever challenge you want to set yourself next :).
Have fun!
I've been playing Cuphead since release and, other day, I have finally gotten all S ranks in both the base game and the DLC. I wanted to share my experience of the game as well as help newcomers or even those who are still facing the challenge in a "unique" kind of way.
I want to make a Cuphead guide book, completely free and in document form, with methods I used to tackle EVERY single boss and Run n' gun level, as well as some general tips I'd have for newer players.
Is this a good idea? Or should I do it post by post? If you're curious about some exact details, please feel free to ask in the comments.
Thats a great Idea, but are you going to put specific details like glitches or hiboxes? Or Just more general stuff? I suggest you do one post at a time, testing and improving the formart, then in the end, combine It all in a proper guidebook
Yes, I am planning to dive into methods to "cheese" some of the bosses as well as their hitboxes and hurtboxes.
I want the book :)
My brother just got Cuphead yesterday in hopes of adding to our list of indie games we've played; little did the two of us know that this game was hard as balls. Bro, y'all make this look so fucking easy doing it without taking damage. HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!
>HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!
Infinite amounts of trial and error, building skills more and more across a period of multiple hours a day, trying new strategies, retrying old strategies,
and a WHOLE lot of dying.
imo the most satisfying part of the game is in your own skill progression. I’m stuck on the Devil in the base game, but I know I will beat him eventually - the fight is fair and it’s just a matter of fine-tuning my reflexes and responses, as it was for every other fight in the game.
I was looking at my boss fight scores and noticed that I got a B- for Goopy Le Grande and an A- for Dr. Kahl’s Robot, lol. The game truly does get easier with practice (and a lot of patience).
İn sekiro terms
Git gud
I think those are hollow knight terms...
Just git gud mate
Just kidding, the game is all about muscle memory, be cartain that these people that finish the game without taking damage, already died A LOT before being able to do this
I'll have to try several times before you remember "Now the boss will do this, now an enemy will appear here"
I'm currently s ranking the devil and king dice. P ranked and s ranked everyone else. I had a little under 500 deaths after a+ everything the first go round on normal (including the run n guns), and I did a ton of resetting. I'm sure I'm now over a thousand and I've still be resetting. It's also my first time playing lol
I won't even try to S rank everything, would like to, but my mental health is more important
So in other words…
Just git gud mate
It can be really hard lmao, I got it without knowing how hard it was and didn't play for months, honestly it's really hard to beat bosses the first time but you do get the hang of it, the people making it look easy have just been through the rounds
It is formally known as The Great Cuphead War in my house. 300 percent on all 3 saves. About 3 years ago. It is my greatest achievement to this day.
Why is it a war? Did it have any casualties? (smashed controllers do count)
At some point, you just become
I kept watching videos of this game on YouTube and finally decided to buy it myself but now I'm struggling. Like really really struggling lol. I haven't really played platformer games before so that has something to do with it but it's also because I'm just not the best gamer in the world. Anyway, are there any basic tips you would have for a first time player? I play on PC and I've only beaten the two easiest bosses in the game so far (you can probably guess what those are) and I'm excited to do better but figured I'd try and ask for help.
Be patient and practice. This game is all about learning the bosses and mastering the controls. I'm really bad at games in general but I practiced a lot and I was able to finish the game on expert and get all achievements. Death in this game is the part of the learning. Good luck!
My biggest tip (cuphead is the first video game i've played) is to not overcorrect with movements. Especially for the bullet hell bosses, I've learned to just barely move to dodge and not overdo it. I've died over 1,600 times and I'm on the devil! It's possible!
I finally beat Cagney Carnation tonight and that felt like a huge accomplishment lol. I'm hoping I get done with the frogs soon, I can easily make it to the final level I'm just struggling a bit with timing on the slot machine stage.
I'm just now getting my chance to do a playthrough of cuphead because I hadn't had access to any of the systems that it was on when it came out. I was dreading it because I don't like really hard games, but this is hard in a good way. this is fun hard. this isn't punishing hard like meat boy. this is I want to do better next time and I can't wait to go back in there and try again hard. it balances difficulty and fun perfectly. I'm surprised cuz I was expecting to put it on for a few minutes and drool over the graphics and then turn it off m because I was expecting a very punishing game but this is fun and challenging not rip your hair out, punch holes in the walls and get yourself evicted for screaming at the top of your lungs hard. though that may happen too because I've seen videos of people on YouTube doing that. but it's fun.
Well deserved of the popularity it achieved when it first came out.
yeah i was basically in the same situation as you (though i started being able to play cuphead for some years now, but at that time i never thought of it since it was too late, like years after it released) i was also always a fan of plataformers and remember watching all sort of content about the game when it came out in 2017. I started playing like 3 weeks ago, i think i just remembered it one day or something, ive been playin hell of a lot games recently so of course i had to try it after so much time of never playing it, i literally beat saltbaker yesterday and i finally leveled up the cursed relic to divine, now the only thing left for me is to defeat every boss in expert mode and get that 300%, i knew it was a great game, and after playing it i was exactly right.
I definitely think it's a fun great game I just don't know how much longer I'm going to last cuz I think it's more of a game than I can handle cuz I'm not a great gamer I just enjoy the hobby. I love Platformers there's some of my favorite genre video games. But I'll probably never stop playing it completely because it's just fun even if it's every once in awhile I go in there and mess around and then it's fun. Despite the fact that it's one of the hardest games I've ever played it is absolutely fun. Just to have a little more fun in the game I decided to look up and download a save file that was already 300% complete so I could kind of just go through and see what the rest of the game had to offer before I could get there myself
Welcome to your new obsession.
Definitely the kind of game you enjoy so much that you want to reward it by buying the DLC.
I love watching my plat vid for this. I was so locked in at the end I was just jumping around the falling chip perfectly and I love reliving that moment. I have no idea how many hours it took to finally beat him but it was a lot. Congrats 🎉
The fun thing is that I did that parry on the video by accident and so glad I did because it would have taken me out. I was so locked in that I didn't even noticed the super was charged
Don’t say that, it is that hard, u are very good playing and that’s it, I also got it 2 years ago, my 2nd favorite after Dark Souls 1
I just thought it would be harder because of all the boogeyman stories around it. But by no means it's a walk in the park
It’s mostly kids especially with how cuphead looks.
>Not as hard as the reputation it has.
Totally agree. I think it was the prefect level of difficulty for me.
I expected it to be way harder based on the stories i heard about it on release. It wasn't easy, but it wasn't some rage inducing impossible game either. Just a pleasant challenge
Exactly how I felt. Liked it so much that should be playing the DLC soon.
I think the dlc is a bit harder than base game, but nothing crazy. It was great
I’ve always wanted to go for it but always found it intimidating. How long did it take you?
Not OP but took me approx 20 hrs including dlc. If I were to redo this I think I could do it under 10 hrs as there is def some stuff to get used to at first but once you get a hang of the concept it's not too bad.
If you love a challenge go for it. It's not easy at all but once you get use to it, you'll get better amd better.
This game has 43 trophies: 24 bronze, 12 silver, 6 gold, and a platinum.
They are very hard (8/10) and take 25 - 35 hours to complete.

I am a bot. More info about me
Just got it in the mail last night and spent three hours playing it this afternoon. This is far and away the hardest game I have ever played. Definitely would appreciate any tips especially what to use coins on. God bless anyone who has beaten this game, especially 100%.
Play a boss enough so you understand patterns. After that you can beat any boss with any weapon.
My 100% achievements playtrough took 2800 deaths.
Depends on how you want to play, and what boss you’re fighting. If you like to stay back and shoot from a far, like with ribby and croaks for instance, roundabout would be a good option. If you prefer to do higher dps and enjoy close combat (which can be harder) something like spread would be better. A lot of the fun of the game comes from trying different stuff and seeing what’s the most effective for any particular boss. But if you get bored or feel like you’re struggling with a specific boss, don’t feel bad about looking up the recommendations for that boss. Remember, you gotta have a great plan and then some! Hope you enjoy the journey :)
Thank you! I don’t really have a preference as far as style. Just whatever makes it easier to accomplish beating the stages/bosses. I only beat two in three hours. I think it’ll take some time to get used to the mechanics.
And that’s fine! When I was first starting out it was sooo hard but after a while you learn the movement and how to avoid stuff and it gets easier. Definitely get smoke bomb if you’re having trouble avoiding attacks, as it makes you immune to damage while you’re dashing. Helped immensely on my first play through
Definitely think and do research before spending coins cuz you only get so many . Chaser, spread and smoke charm are great
Yeah, I might have to restart
There’s detailed explanations on YouTube of locations of coins and if beat run and gun level without getting all coins you can go back to get them all
honestly. roundabout and spread or roundabout and crackshot got me thru most of the game
Ty
Get the improved dash asap. Also the roundabout shot is insane if you know how to use it
Womp womp 🎺 But no really, just so you know, it’s perfectly fine to be stuck on the tutorial. I started Cuphead 4 years ago and I couldn’t get past this either. Now, I’ve completed the game a ton of times on the hardest difficulties
Its kinda wild how you have to hack to beat this section of the game
you basically have to use the konami code to get a 10% higher jump, then just press A and D repeatedly until you encountered Freddy Fazbear, after beating him a door to Mushroom Kingdom will appears, you'll need to go to the Mushroom Kingdom via the door and defeat Bowser. After defeating Bowser, Princess Peach will give you access to a ritual, you will need to capture and sacrifice Trevor, Michael and Franklin from gta5 to perform the ritual which will teleport you to the Icon of Sin, just kill it and you will get teleported back to the tutorial with a 20% higher jump, it may take a few hours to make an exactly perfect jump to get through, but once you get through the tutorial, you will only need to do 100 more quests to beat Ganondorf
damn okay😔😔 wish me luck
Remember one thing :

Key Considerations for a Cuphead Strategy Guide:
Know Your Bosses: Each boss has unique patterns and phases. Study their attack patterns and learn when to dodge, parry, and attack.
Weapon Selection: Choose weapons that suit your playstyle. The Spread and Charge shots are great for close-range, while the Peashooter is reliable for general use. Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for each boss.
Super Arts: Utilize Super Arts effectively. They can deal significant damage and can be a game-changer in tough battles. Make sure to charge them up during fights.
Parrying: Master the parry mechanic to gain extra Super Meter and avoid damage. Look for pink objects to parry, and practice timing to make it second nature.
Co-op Play: If possible, play with a friend. Co-op mode allows for shared lives and can make challenging bosses more manageable.
Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t get discouraged by repeated failures. Each attempt is a learning experience. Use the practice mode to hone your skills on specific bosses.
