General Strategy
The Phantom Express is considered one of the more challenging bosses in Cuphead, especially when aiming for an S rank. Players often find the final phase particularly tricky [2:6]. Utilizing specific weapons and charms can significantly impact your performance and make the fight more manageable.
Weapon Choice
Several players recommend using the Charge shot during the Phantom Express battle, particularly in the final phase. The Charge shot offers a faster takedown compared to other options like the Chaser, Peashooter, Roundabout, or Spread [1:2]
[2:7]. While the Chaser can be useful due to its homing capability, the Charge shot requires practice but can yield quicker results
[1:3].
Charm Selection
Auto-parry is a popular charm choice for the Phantom Express, as it simplifies the parrying process, which is essential for achieving an S rank [2:8]. Twin Hearts may not be ideal for this boss due to the damage reduction, making it difficult to defeat the boss within the required time frame
[2:5]. Smoke Bomb and Coffee are other charms that players have found useful in different phases of the game
[2:1].
Phase-Specific Tips
Each phase of the Phantom Express requires different strategies:
Practice and Adaptation
Achieving an S rank requires adaptability and sometimes changing your approach if you get stuck. Watching tutorials or gameplay videos can provide new insights and techniques [2:4]. Remember that each player's experience can differ, so experimenting with different weapon and charm combinations might lead to success.
By focusing on these strategies and tips, players can improve their chances of defeating the Phantom Express and earning that coveted S rank.
I found chaser to be really useful for the final phase when peashooter, roundabout, and spread were not working for me. I didn't think to try charge. Kinda curious to see how it stacks against the final phase, but I don't feel like doing all of that again lol.
My first time playing through, I did achieve the S rank with chaser on the final phase. Then I went back and tried charge, and it was way faster. It just takes some practice with the charge shot.
You use charge a lot, I see you have good taste.
Tomorrow I will be posting tips for King Dice and his full roster of mini bosses. Stay tuned or follow for more!
Thanks, will do!
Niceeee, recently i s rank everyboss, not gonna lie its going to be HARD, especially the airplane bosses. Try to follow the order in this guide (i did it and it worked)

My advice would be to use twin hearth in the majority of the bosses, when you cant beat the boss in under 2 min because of the twin hearth damage reduction, try smoke bomb, autoparry and coffe. Good luck and leave Wally Warbles for the end lol
Twin hard seems impossible in some of the bosses! Like the phantom express! But will check it out!
I didn’t use twin hearts in:
In this particular boss I use autoparry to s rank, made it SO MUCH EASY
Damn... Really? I find Dr kahl more fucked up, but thats the beautiful thing in this game, different struggles!
Also Dr.K is a tough boss BUT his expert version is basically the same just faster. If you can A+ Dr.k, you can probably S him too.
Wally gets worse on expert I mean. Try the first phase and the eggs will ruin your life
He's right. Worse boss by a long shot when doing expert, ESCPEICALLY expert S
I have gotten all s rank. And one thing i can say is, if you are stuck on a boss trying to s rank. You definitely need to change something like your charm, weapons etc... You need to watch some tutorial on youtube
GG ! Now good Luck for all fuc… all crazy S-Rank
Thanks dude! I am very scared of phantom express and Grimm matchstick
grim is way easier on expert since clouds move backwards. parries can be tough though due to weird rng on the first phase. phantom is easy too, but the last phase is tricky for me. I used charge and super I to kill it fast
The other day I decided to play through the game and do as bad as I could to see what the lowest possible competition percentage you can get at the end is, and in some ways I found it to be harder than the actual game itself.
You basically need to find ways to intentionally get Peppino hurt as often as you can, which isn’t as straightforward as it seems because not all the enemies hurt you, collecting the caged toppings, which is required to progress in the game, gives you a ton of points and often times boosts your rank by a whole letter each time you collect one. And then during pizza time, you’re kind of forced to speed back through the level because of the timer, which means you’re likely unintentionally killing enemies along the way and earning more points from it, and you have less time to keep getting Peppino hurt again.
My goal was to try to finish all levels with D ranks, and because of these factors, it was much harder than playing the level normally. Bosses are also hard to because your rank is dependent on how much you got hurt during the fight, but you obviously still need to beat it anyway. I read that getting anything above D on a level counts towards the completion status, so every D rank you get does lower your final score.
All in all, my efforts only got my score to 52% at the end, giving me the “confused” screen. It seems like this is one of those games that’s both difficult to be good and bad at. It certainly seems impossible to get the “you suck” screen unless you’re intentionally trying and focusing on doing poorly.
Why not do multiple runs of the same level to get all of the toppins?
You might be on to something
In several levels though many of the toppings are along the way of progressing so often times youre forced to collect them no matter what
I watched a video seeing if you can beat the game with only D-ranks
one must become one with the sucking to get the "you suck" judgement
As someone who’s good at sucking I can confirm it wasn’t that hard
Hmm indeed
I have slept long enough
WHAT
Thats why hes smiling and giving you a thumbs up
Maybe that's why Peppino's giving you the thumbs up
For getting a rank that's actually harder to get than HOLY SH*T
From the boss fights, the music, the art style, it’s all fantastic. Both the main game and the DLC.
There were 2 times I lost my shit playing this and that was when I was trying to get an A- or higher on Rumor Honeybottoms(I absolutely sucked at that fight) and S ranking The Howling Aces. But other than that I was able to keep my cool for the rest of the game.
9.5/10
congrats! was my first challenging platinum and will always be one of my favourites
Congrats that’s a big one
23HRS ???!? I thought it takes 50+ 😭😆
Congrats!
Congratulations! This is one of the most challenging Platinum in the history of humankind.
I don’t even know why I started this. Somewhere halfway through, I questioned everything — more than once. This is, without a doubt, one of the most satisfying and proudest Platinums I’ve ever earned — right up there with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.
Good job!
I feel you man, this is a rewarding one! And such a blast to play, too.. stunning to look at, smooth to play, the music's on point, I mean what else can you ask for?
Expert was a brutal run for me, some of those bosses beat my ASS. I remember when I finally beat Wally just springing off the couch like "YUUSSSSSS!!!!"😅
One of my best games i've ever played, congrats
Thank you 😊
Congratulations on the platinum! 🎉
Thank you.
Good shit. Congrats
Thank you.
I’m working on that right now! I need to beat King Dice without damage and beat the Devil on expert and I’m clear. One of my favorite games of all time.
Good luck to you.
First high cuphead, now mischievous chalice what’s next, sad Mugman?
Why is she looking at me like that.
She’s pissed for what she had to go through for that rank.
She is boutta commit some devious activities
classic chalice, at least for the show
It took me about 3 or 4 hours, the final phase can go fuck itself.
Also fuck rumor honeybottom she is the only boss in Isle 3 that I am unable to S rank peashooter only. (Also this is on keyboard lol, I find the controls much easier than with the controller).
Edit: OMG YES I DID IT, I BEAT RUMOR HONEYBOTTOM S RANK WITH PEASHOOTER ONLY.
Edit2: Only saltbaker remains.
Congrats dude! That must’ve been a serious pain in the ass. Congrats again!
Ms Chalice: "😈"
Did you purposely take the photo with Ms Chalice like that or was it an accident like mine?
No it was on accident lol.
Ah alright
I have positive and negative thoughts on the game. I did enjoy it and love the art style of course but I really feel that this was what gave the game all the hub bub. Honestly I find the game it self to be a tad over rated. It was fun and I love the set up of run and gun or just bosses (not mixing) but sometimes I felt like the boss battles were just kind of cheap. I get its kind of a bullet hell game but I found myself REALLY getting cornered sometimes by multiple attacks at once with no other recourse but to take the hit. I must have restarted certain bosses 20 times because their attacks when done simultaneously leave you know where to go.
I dont mind difficult games but usually there is a pattern or system of some sort to learn. This game has you learning attacks but there are almost no patterns. Its just all random. I dont mind random reflex gaming but usually youre dodging 2 attacks max, not 3 or 4. Again the screen gets so crowded you just have no where to go occasionally and it almost becomes a game of luck more than skill. Once the bosses are defeated you dont get a sense of accomplishment but more a sense of relief. I honestly have zero interest in going back for any S rank stuff because it would just be a crap shoot coin flip for a win or lose. Im not trying to bash anyone who did or thinks the accomplished something, if you think that you did, but I usually like to know I accomplished something by knowing I mastered the patterns and gimicks and could easily beat the boss/game near 100% without issue. Otherwise it just always feels like you got lucky. Then add in the constant foreground objects blocking your view and it could be down right cheap feeling.
Either way its still fun, I basically got homing and used that and pea shooter the entire game, with my super blast special (as the other 2 are utter garbage) and the cloud dashing.

Also I played on switch with the patch so there was no weapon cool down dooping for me. I notice online almost everyone who plays through the game and says its easy seems to do this trick and the bosses literally become a joke.

If you had to pick one negative thing on the game what would it be, seriously, no "too short" stuff or anything like that.
The point of these old types of games is that they need some cheapness. Even then, they don't use that much. It just needs more practice.
Foreground objects mixed with excessive rng is pretty much just cheap artificial difficulty to me.
I don't want excessive rng, but i want basic rng like how the balloon dogs in the beppi fight are randomly into a random pipe.
I don’t think the battles are cheap it’s just learning about positioning at the right time. I experienced being cornered by several projectiles but found it to be user error more than the game.
Now granted some bosses do have random elements like Djimmi’s first phase, but overall the game is fair as long as you’re patient and take time to learn the bosses and their phases.
How is there no skill involved? If this is all a coin flip how come people can get through stages damage-less continuously? Yes you CAN beat the boss with luck but chances are you will beat all but the final phase with skill (on your first victory). The "luck" you are referring to has no way around it in any videogame because of outside circumstances. Let's say for the Phantom Express fight you are on the final phase and if you parried his tail now a fireball would hit you where you stand but your dog barks and distracts you making you parry it 0.5 seconds later so you didn't get hit. That's the only non-reactable "luck" in this game in a final phase. Things like Cagney's briar and Rumor Honeybottom's fists/razor give time to react. As for other phases, you're gonna replay through those phases over and over more than the last so it's better to give a slightly modified experience so it doesn't get boring. They still follow similar patterns, but it may eliminate a few options. A little rng is a good thing.

Bought it in the sale. The DLC and Ms. Chalice is so helpful. Finished the first island with A rank and the two run and guns on pacifist.
This game has 43 trophies: 24 bronze, 12 silver, 6 gold, and a platinum.
They are very hard (8/10) and take 25 - 35 hours to complete.
Price: $19.99

Yes, as we know, Cuphead is not an easy game. Mainly because of the boss fights. You gotta have skill for sure. This game really puts you to the test. I’ve been playing this since 2020 and maaan.. it feels damn good to get an S rank, especially one handed. Cuphead and Sekiro are the two games that really tests my skill. Are you a fan?
Did you just go to the cuphead subreddit and ask who’s a fan of cuphead?
Yes I did. You never know. 😅
One handed?! On the flower boss?! /j
Yup! Hated flower the most in isle one lol 😂
I love the game so much I got a 300% save file and all 42 achievements
I think we all are a fan bud
It’s such a damn good, but challenging game for sure!
Yup, it's flipping amazing
Maybe I should go into Super mario community and ask "who's a fan of Mario?"
Jokes aside, glad you enjoy the game and congratulations on S rank with 1 hand
lol I know that was dumb of me 😅 but yes, playing one handed isn’t too bad, but having to do two commands with one hand takes a lot of practice and focus. I appreciate it 💯
It took forever but I've finally gotten all the S ranks (and p ranks) in cuphead . It truly was worth breaking my fingers.
