Tips and Tricks for Playing Cuphead

TL;DR

  • Stay calm, practice patience, and learn from failures.
  • Utilize the Smoke Bomb for invincibility frames during dashes.
  • Master parrying and customize controls for comfort.

Stay Calm and Practice Patience

Cuphead is known for its challenging gameplay, which requires players to remain calm and patient. Many players emphasize the importance of learning each boss's attack patterns and using failures as learning opportunities [1:1], [3:1]. The game is designed to be difficult, so taking breaks when frustrated can help maintain focus and prevent burnout [2:2].

Master Controls and Techniques

Customizing controls can significantly improve your gameplay experience. For instance, some players suggest changing the shoot button to a trigger for easier access while moving and dodging [2:1], [4:4]. Learning to jump and shoot simultaneously by rolling your thumb can also enhance your performance [1:3]. Additionally, mastering the dash and parry mechanics is crucial, as these skills are often key to overcoming difficult sections [4:1], [4:3].

Utilize Power-Ups and Weapons

Certain power-ups and weapons can provide significant advantages. The Smoke Bomb, for example, grants invincibility frames during dashes, making it invaluable for avoiding damage [1:8], [3:7]. Players also recommend experimenting with different weapons like the Roundabout and Spreadshot, which can be effective against various bosses [2:3], [3:5].

Focus on Parrying

Parrying is an essential skill in Cuphead, allowing players to negate pink attacks and build their super meter [4:3]. Practicing this mechanic early on can pay off in later stages, where precise timing becomes critical [2:4].

Learn Through Repetition

Finally, repetition is key to success in Cuphead. Each attempt provides valuable insights into boss patterns and level layouts. As you become more familiar with these elements, you'll find yourself progressing further and becoming more adept at handling challenges [5:2]. Remember that death is part of the learning process, and persistence will eventually lead to victory [5:1].

ORIGINAL POST

Watched people play, my first time playing.

Going home for leave and gonna make my older brother play it with me (he’s never played).

Him being the older brother, I’d like to “outshine him” for once lol

Find some coins and buy the i-frame dash ability.

The first advice I give to new players is to get used to jumping and shooting at the same time by rolling your thumb instead of picking it up from shoot button, moving to jump button, then back to shoot if that makes sense. Its natural for some people and for others it's a weird thing to get the hang of

1 upvotes on reddit
blueodis · OP · 2 years ago

Also also, I feel like my biggest problem is I’m not utilizing dash enough… any advice on that?

1 upvotes on reddit
ParkZig55 · 2 years ago

I played on Xbox and honestly you'll start dashing more naturally out of necessity. Just learn the attack patterns and try to learn from your mistakes. You're meant to fail a lot but it helps you learn

Maybe try out the Smoke Bomb item? It gives your dash I frames and is generally just awesome.

So I have it on switch. Playing atm, so they seem to roll together relatively easily. What do you play it on? Also, thank you for the response 👍

Heres the first tip just relax and remain calm because this game is a rager lol.

From the game itself to the dlc its fantastic but challenging in its on right. There's really no tricks that come to mind just be patient, calm, and strike whenever possible. If a boss feels too hard dont be afraid to watch the walk through of it. I had to for a few of em.

Most of the bosses arent overly extreme outside of mad scientist, or Mr king dice

I’ve watched markiplier and others play through it lol so I’ve “seen” how crazy it can get. Just haven’t done it myself :p

Hey! Fellow switch player here! Here are some tips I used to help beat the main game!

  1. It will be harder than you think. But don't give up! Take breaks if needed of course, but don't be discouraged if you can't beat a boss. It takes A LOT of practice.
  2. You can press multiple buttons with the same finger, I use the tip of my thumb to press Y to shoot, and the bottom of it to press B to jump. I also use my thumb to stop shooting so I can press X to dash really fast.
  3. You use the top left trigger to switch weapons on the switch. It tells you at the start of every fight where you have two new weapons equipped, but still figured I should mention just in case you don't see that.
  4. If you also bought the DLC, enter it just to unlock Chalice if you want to beat the main game before you beat the DLC. Chalice helped me SOO much with some bosses. (Optional! Only if you bought the DLC!)
  5. When fighting a plane boss, instead of dashing when pressing X, you instead shrink. This is helpful when dodging attacks.
  6. Play Run&Gun levels, they give you coins that you can use to buy things from Porkrind.
  7. Talking to certain NPC's and doing certain things for them can also give you coins! There are also hidden coins all over the map! These will help you to achieve that perfect 100%
  8. Chalice has different abilities compared to Cuphead or Mugman, so you'll want to do the tutorial in Inkwell Isle IV. (Optional! Only if you bought the DLC!)

Hope these help! Cuphead is an awesome game and you'll have a blast!!

Do all the bosses in regular mode if you want to finish the game, but simple mode is good for training.

Also complete run n gun levels in order to get coins. Chaser, Spreadshot, Heart and Parry Sugar are recommended imo.

Heya fellow Switch player! Here are my tips:

First Change Your Controls: Jump B Shoot ZR Ex Shoot A Switch Weapon X Lock ZL Dash Y

Practice Make Perfect Cuphead bosses on the one-side are each uniquely fun and adds news to the table but on the other hand goes from 0-10 as you progress.

I'd suggest practice parrying, it may seem simple but it's mandatory for the later(like King Dice.)

Weapons and Supers

Weapons are the items you buy from Porkrind.

During Inkwell Isle 1-2, Charge/Spread/Roundabout and even Peashooter are your best friends.

If you want to buy Heart early, then go for it. For Inkwell-IV buy the other items.

Super 1:This is the MVP for %80 of the bosses. This guarantees you an easy 6/6 Parry score, as long as you use when the boss is vulnerable.

Super 2:2 is invincibility, so se it for the Run-And-Gun. During my first run I didn't think about this one but I regret. Post game, w/Chalice Super 2 helped me get P ranks.

You ever played Undertale where you could go the Pacifist route by making friends/not battling them? Well, that's what P-Ranks are. They are a pain the ass so worry about them once you've unlocked Chalice and heated the DLC.

Super 3:It's useful. The only downside is as it moves around you too as well, leaving you wide-open to attacks. Just use it wisely and you should be good.

Fun Fact:By the time you're finished with Cuphead you'll have all the Weapons, Charms and Supers.

Don't Worry About Ranks(Yet)

Listen, listen I know ranks in games are fun to test your skills but for Cuphead it's stressful enough beating bosses like Dr. Kahl's Robot and Wally Werbles.

Focus on beating the boss and the DLC, then go for the Expert Mode and Acheivements.

At the end of the day you choose :).

COLLECT DEM COINS

Oh boy. After I beated Cuphead I realized that I was missing 1 coin to buy the last item and had to replay a run-and-gun to get the coin.

During your run look out for coins and hints. And definitely collect the coins in run-and-guns

Hope my guy helps😁!

Unless you’ve beaten every boss and seen the credits roll, don’t worry too much about rank.
You can’t actually get an S rank until you have unlocked Expert Mode though finishing the game. But even getting A rank doesn’t give you anything extra to help out.
Just focus on getting through all the fights alive, getting your coins on run ‘n’ gun levels and talk to everyone on the map for extra stuff.
Don’t forget to equip stuff you buy and try out new weapons and supers.
Even if they seem ineffective, make sure you understand how they work, because I guarantee you’ll find yourself in situations where switching weapons will help a ton.
Once you’ve cleared every fight, if you want more, you can go back and try to A Rank them, or clear them in Expert Mode, or S Rank them in Expert Mode.
Whatever challenge you want to set yourself next :).
Have fun!

I don't actually have the game, but I do have some tips from watching other people play!

  • Talk to the apple guy to get three coins. Use them to buy smoke bomb.
  • Equip it and go to a run 'n' gun level. It's a lot easier to get coins with smoke-bomb! (To me it is, anyways. I've played a run 'n' gun with a friend before.)
  • try to get enough coins for round-a-bout. This will help you on most bosses.
  • The root pack is a great tutorial on shooting and aiming. Goopy is a great ducking and dashing tutorial. I'd advise you play those two until you've got those controls down.

Hopefully that helps!

PyneKone · 5 years ago

Try not to get too frustrated when you die, easier said than done I know, but it will happen a lot. The key is just getting used to each boss's movement/attack patterns. Just keep at it and you'll soon notice yourself getting better and further.

I was where you were once, I think it's safe bet to say that most everyone here was. But, like all of us, through time and perseverance you'll get there.

If you ever need help beating any specific boss there's plenty of tips on here already. If you can't find what you need then just ask. Though try to be specific in regards to what you're struggling with, such as which part of the R&G or phase of the boss fight you're dropping health on.

Always be shooting, most basic tip but also the most useful learn how to move, dodge, dash and parry all while holding down the x button, it’ll save a lot of time and you’ll beat the bosses way faster

By pressing jump in midair you'll do a "parry" move that let's you absorb pink attacks when you collide with them and add a card to your super meter. It's a timing thing to learn, but well worth getting good at

Roundabout and lobber are the best along side with the invisible dash. Your first super is the only good one you get honestly. But that’s my opinion. Also just switch the controls for shoot to right bumper. Original controls make the game 10x more anal

Any general tips for a first time player?

Posted by therealtjmorra · in r/Cuphead · 4 years ago

I kept watching videos of this game on YouTube and finally decided to buy it myself but now I'm struggling. Like really really struggling lol. I haven't really played platformer games before so that has something to do with it but it's also because I'm just not the best gamer in the world. Anyway, are there any basic tips you would have for a first time player? I play on PC and I've only beaten the two easiest bosses in the game so far (you can probably guess what those are) and I'm excited to do better but figured I'd try and ask for help.

Be patient and practice. This game is all about learning the bosses and mastering the controls. I'm really bad at games in general but I practiced a lot and I was able to finish the game on expert and get all achievements. Death in this game is the part of the learning. Good luck!

My biggest tip (cuphead is the first video game i've played) is to not overcorrect with movements. Especially for the bullet hell bosses, I've learned to just barely move to dodge and not overdo it. I've died over 1,600 times and I'm on the devil! It's possible!

don't ask this subreddit how to get an A+

but in all seriousness, if any of the bosses are hard, do them on simple mode, and if you beat them then after or later you can come back to them and do the boss on regular mode

3 upvotes on reddit
boookay · 1 year ago

But also know that you will need to complete them all on regular mode to unlock the ending.

I completed them all on simple mode and had to go back after realizing I couldn't unlock the last but until I finished all on regular.

It was somewhat easier the second go around becasue my skills had gotten better.

For boss fight you should use a weapon that fits, and one that deal tons of damage. At example for beppy the clown (isle 2) you may use the roundabout, that makes the fight easier, and spread, to deal damage and make the fight shorter. "Damaging" weapons are usually spread, charged, and lobber.

Remember, more damage = shorter fight = less hits = S rank. :3

Depends on how you want to play, and what boss you’re fighting. If you like to stay back and shoot from a far, like with ribby and croaks for instance, roundabout would be a good option. If you prefer to do higher dps and enjoy close combat (which can be harder) something like spread would be better. A lot of the fun of the game comes from trying different stuff and seeing what’s the most effective for any particular boss. But if you get bored or feel like you’re struggling with a specific boss, don’t feel bad about looking up the recommendations for that boss. Remember, you gotta have a great plan and then some! Hope you enjoy the journey :)

How do I play cuphead?

Posted by Aeiexgjhyoun_III · in r/Cuphead · 5 years ago

I literally can't even beat the first level, the forest area. I'm not sure what exactly I'm doing wrong, it seems a bit excessive for a beginner level with the sheer amount they throw at you, I always die either at or just after that kettle miniboss. I've beaten Dark Souls, Sekiro and A ranked dmc on dmd, so I'm not terrible by any means, I'm just really struggling as this is my first game of this style. When I heard run and gun I assumed it would be like Doom in 2D.

Any tips for a noob to this genre. I especially struggle when there's multiple enemies to deal with, the sunflowers constantly coming in, the blue resurrecting motherfuckers, bomb throwing flowers and all that coming at me at the same time.

Just keep trying, in the Run and Gun levels try to do it patience, they’re all optional and you only need them for the coins.

Buy the Roundabout shot ASAP with those coins and jump to the bosses.

Just for being good in DS and Sekiro doesn’t mean you’re already good here. I played Cuphead first and then took 1 hour to beat Gundyr in DS.

I'm just now getting my chance to do a playthrough of cuphead because I hadn't had access to any of the systems that it was on when it came out. I was dreading it because I don't like really hard games, but this is hard in a good way. this is fun hard. this isn't punishing hard like meat boy. this is I want to do better next time and I can't wait to go back in there and try again hard. it balances difficulty and fun perfectly. I'm surprised cuz I was expecting to put it on for a few minutes and drool over the graphics and then turn it off m because I was expecting a very punishing game but this is fun and challenging not rip your hair out, punch holes in the walls and get yourself evicted for screaming at the top of your lungs hard. though that may happen too because I've seen videos of people on YouTube doing that. but it's fun.

Well deserved of the popularity it achieved when it first came out.

I started playing like 3 weeks ago, i think i just remembered it one day or something, ive been playin hell of a lot games recently so of course i had to try it after so much time of never playing it, i literally beat saltbaker yesterday and i finally leveled up the cursed relic to divine, now the only thing left for me is to defeat every boss in expert mode and get that 300%, i knew it was a great game, and after playing it i was exactly right.

But I'll probably never stop playing it completely because it's just fun even if it's every once in awhile I go in there and mess around and then it's fun. Despite the fact that it's one of the hardest games I've ever played it is absolutely fun. Just to have a little more fun in the game I decided to look up and download a save file that was already 300% complete so I could kind of just go through and see what the rest of the game had to offer before I could get there myself

tips and tricks for playing cuphead

Here are some helpful tips and tricks for playing Cuphead:

  1. Learn the Patterns: Each boss has specific attack patterns. Spend time observing their movements and attacks to anticipate and dodge effectively.

  2. Use the Parry Mechanic: Parrying pink objects not only helps you avoid damage but also builds your super meter. Practice timing your jumps to parry effectively.

  3. Upgrade Wisely: Focus on upgrading your weapons and purchasing charms that complement your playstyle. The Spread shot is great for close-range, while the Chaser is useful for beginners.

  4. Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t be discouraged by repeated failures. Each attempt helps you learn the boss mechanics and improve your skills.

  5. Co-op Play: If possible, play with a friend. Co-op mode allows for shared lives and can make some challenging sections easier.

  6. Use Super Arts: Make sure to utilize Super Arts when your meter is full. They can deal significant damage and help turn the tide in tough battles.

  7. Stay Mobile: Always keep moving to avoid attacks. Use dashes and jumps to navigate the battlefield effectively.

  8. Take Breaks: If you’re feeling frustrated, take a break. Coming back with a fresh perspective can help you tackle difficult sections more effectively.

Recommendation: Focus on mastering the parry mechanic early on, as it is crucial for both survival and building your super meter. Additionally, don’t hesitate to switch weapons based on the boss you’re facing; adaptability is key in Cuphead. Enjoy the challenge and the beautiful art style!
