How to Beat Phantom Express in Cuphead

TL;DR

  • Use Roundabout and Chaser/Crackshot for effective damage.
  • Utilize safe spots and strategic positioning to avoid damage.
  • Parry effectively to manage cart movement and build your super meter.

Phase Strategies

  1. Phase 1 (Ghost): Equip the Roundabout weapon and face away from the boss while shooting. Jumping will help destroy the eyes before they reach you [3:1]. Alternatively, use Converge to quickly eliminate eyeballs as they appear [5:1]. Ensure you parry the pink bricks to prevent unwanted cart movement [2:2].

  2. Phase 2 (Skeleton Conductor): Stand at the far right or left of the cart to avoid the conductor's arms [3:2]. Use Spread or Crackshot to deal damage efficiently [1:4]. Keep the cart centered after each attack to minimize movement [4:1].

  3. Phase 3 (Lollipop Ghouls): Position yourself on one side of the screen and use Chaser to hit both heads without needing precise aim [4:2]. Parry dash to reposition the cart as needed [3:2].

  4. Final Phase: Use Chaser to focus on dodging rather than aiming [5:1]. Avoid the fire and spinning bones by learning their patterns [4:2].

Weapon and Charm Recommendations

  • Weapons: Roundabout and Chaser are frequently recommended for their ability to hit targets without precise aiming [4:5], [5:1]. Lobber can be useful in specific phases for its high damage output [5:1].

  • Charms: Parry Sugar is advised for easier cart maneuvering and building your super meter through frequent parries [3:3], [5:1].

General Tips

  • Safe Spots: Identify safe spots during each phase where attacks cannot reach you. For example, standing at the edges during the skeleton phase [3:2].

  • Super Meter Management: Use your EX moves strategically throughout the fight to maximize damage when safe opportunities arise [4:1].

By following these strategies and recommendations, players can improve their chances of defeating the Phantom Express and achieving higher ranks.

ORIGINAL POST

EDIT: I finally beat The Phantom Express after a bunch of tries. Thanks for the tips guys!

So I bought Cuphead about a month ago and I'm about to reach the final world and I've now cleared every boss except for The Phantom Express.

The problem is that no matter what I do I can't seem to get past the conductor skeleton. I've tried every finger gun and ultimate but I just can't beat them. Is there any tips that you guys can give me? Anything helps and I would very much appreciate it!

My strategy (assuming you don't have the DLC) is to use Roundabout and Chaser (converge and crackshot if you do have the DLC) I found the charm doesn't really matter that much, so just use P sugar without DLC or Ms. Chalice with DLC. Phase one, use the roundabout. Face away from the boss, hold down shoot, and just keep jumping. Most of the eyes should be destroyed just from jumping, but be careful if some slip through the cracks. With O sugar, you can jump right into the pink falling bricks that move your cart. If you have DLC, using the converge without aiming will destroy all the eyes before they reach you and chalice can easily dash into the pink bricks. For phase two, use chaser/crackshot (they do basically the same thing, but the crackshot is stronger, yet slower). Always try to be standing under the skull and be wary of the falling bricks. Whenever you feel comfortable, switch to roundabout and aim it right into his face for good damage. For phase three, you again want either the chaser or the crackshot because they will always hit the boss. Stay in the middle of the arena unless you are dodging the lightning. With P sugar jump into the pink skulls to parry them or dash as chalice. For final phase, stay in the middle or left side. Jump into his pink tail and shoot the heart with any of the weapons you are comfortable with (preferably not the chaser, but if that is all you can manage, go ahead) Keep jumping into pink object is if you are using the p sugar. If you are using chalice, do the invincible roll instead to flat out avoid getting hit.

I'm pretty sure if you stand near the edge of where you parry between left and middle or middle and right no matter where he appears he can't hit you and you can do that stage easily

I've noticed that but I think one of my issues is that I try jumping to my ultimate then I get hit. Thanks for the suggestion.

Use Chalice for the fight if you have the DLC. Spread for Spectre, and Ticket Taker. If you are away from his head, go inbetween the hands and use your Crackshot. Use Spread on the Lollipops as much as you csn bit as soon as they start spraying, go the opposite way and use Crackshot to get the nearby Lolly and the homing ghosts. Keep repeating until they are dead. Parry the trains tail light then use your spread if you are upclose, if not, use your Crackshot and dodge the spinning bones and the fire once you open the furnace

The conductor skeleton is one of the easiest phases to do, remember to use either spread shot or charge shot to get rid of him quickly. A trick to know is that if your cart is below one of his hands and you can't parry in time. You can stand on the very left or very right side of the cart and not get hit. I'll include an MS paint image because I can't explain shit very well.

Phantom Express doesn’t get enough credit!

Posted by zammey12 · in r/Cuphead · 6 years ago

That boss can be downright infuriating!

It’s not quite as hard as the Robot or Wally but going for an A rank even on regular is a bad time.

The Skeleton phase gets me a lot with the bricks dropping quickly and you risk getting hurt to jump and parry them.

The ghosts in the Lolipop phase can get you stuck in spots that almost force you to take damage.

And the final phase... on expert it is a bad time, you need to save up for that super beam to shorten that to a beatable phase.

I finally A ranked it and beat it on expert, but it took me at least an hour. Good Riddance is all I have to say to the Phantom Express!

To me it's so cool how everyone seems to have different experiences with the boss fights.

In my solo playthrough (which im just about to finish as long as the devil isn't impossible), I actually had no problem with Kahl or Honeybottom.

Meanwhile though, Calla Maria and Phantom express each took me over an hour. There were just so many spots in both of these fights that felt like I was being forced into losing a heart.

I guess everyone just has a different experience, but I agree with pretty much everything you said here (I just Beat him today for the first time).

I think that’s really interesting too! Other than my difficulty Phantom Express and my ease Cala Maria, I tend to go with the consensus. Another one that’s different though, is Cagney Carnation, I S ranked that fight in about 3 or 4 attempts. He’s a fight that gives a lot of other people troubles I think.

it also has the best song out of all the fights in this game. “Railroad Wrath” is probably one of my favorite songs in gaming. those drums are so phenomenal, and the song is a lot of fun to play along with (although exhausting!)

For this fight, play Ms chalice and run crackshot and converge

Phase 1: use converge and shoot straight forward(don’t weapon lock). Wait for the pumpkins to drop ingots and parry them before they hit the cart

Phase 2: stand at the far right end of the cart and the conductors arms can’t hit you. Just use crackshot and he’ll die fine

Phase 3: as soon as the conductor dies parry dash the right wheel and go to the center. Depending on which demon attacks, go to the opposite side of the screen, and at the end of the attack, go back to the center. Repeat this while using crackshot for this phase.

Phase 4: keep the cart in the center and use chalice’s mobility to dodge the projectiles while parrying the tail as fast as possible. Use crackshot for this phase

I hope this helps!

Phantom Express was one of my favorites. Here's what I did:

Loadout: Spread, Lobber or Roundabout, Smoke Dash.

Phase 1 (Ghost): Leave the platform at the left side where it starts and stand as far right as you can without falling off. Use spread and just jump to kill the eyes. None of them can reach you before they get destroyed. This phase is really easy. Just make sure you parry the candy falling so it doesn't move your platform.

Phase 2 (Skeleton): Immediately after killing the ghost in Phase 1, move the platform to the middle. Continue using spread throughout this phase. Keep the platform in the middle while waiting for the skeleton to attack. Once you see where he is going to pop out, quickly move the platform to avoid the arms, and pump damage into him. Return the cart to the middle and repeat. The main thing is to stay focused and make sure that the candy doesn't move you into harm's way.

Phase 3 (Demon Lolipops): Start out in the middle again and wait for one of them to attack. As soon as you know, go to to the opposite side to pump damage into the one who's not actively attacking. This is a good point to use the super attack with all five cards because it will hit both of them and remove most of their health.

Phase 4 (Train): You can stick with spread here, or use Roundabout/Lobber. Keep the platform in the middle and watch out for candy as with all the other phases. Parry the tail as soon as possible to expose the heart and jump while using spread to do good damage. The train doesn't have a ton of health, so you should be able to knock it out in three parries of the tail. The fire isn't too hard to avoid, just watch out for the bone circle. It will drop down then fly at you horizontally when you're in line with it. You can bait it into missing by jumping up (which you'll probably be doing anyway to damage the train).

That was my strategy and after I figured that all out it only took me a couple tries to get the execution down.

First phase use spread and you should hit the eyes without moving. Second phase, you got a safe spot between the hands falling. A little to the right with the wagon all left. Third, you also have a safe spot, just stay all the way left, use chaser and super to hit both heads. Last phase is a bit tricky, use chaser and learn how to dodge the little fire getting out of the belly and the bone circle.

With this I could do S rank.

Good luck !

I got the S rank with roundabout, chaser, super 1, and parry sugar.

Face backwards and jump up and down while firing the roundabout on stage one. The shots will take down all the eyes quickly, allowing you to hit the ghost.

Use your ex shoots on the skeleton conductor and lollipop ghouls. You can use as many shoots as you want, because you’ll get a lot of chances to parry bricks and skulls to build your meter.

For the skeleton conductor, always move your cart back to the middle as soon as you can. That way, you won’t have to worry about moving all the way across the screen.

Use your super on one of the lollipop ghouls, then finish that one off quickly. Then focus on the other one. Keep parring to build your meter.

On the final phase, use your super as soon as you can get the furnace door open. This is where I switch to my chaser, so I can just fire away and focus on dodging the fire and bones.

Why I found phantom express so hard and grimm matchstick relatively simpler (my own personal experience)

Posted by yaboy1998 · in r/Cuphead · 3 years ago

So keep in mind this is purely how well we can all adapt to tactics so I’m just speaking on personal experience.

I personally dreaded Grimm seeing the clips of him with the RNG.

But with roundabout and lobber I didn’t struggle too much with him. Using the sound cues of the fireballs was ESSENTIAL and I found that a jump and a dash would 99% get me safe if I jumped same time as the fireball.

Also, using the lobber works great for phase 3 since staying at the top of the screen allows you to stay long range and still do great damage by hitting the lower part of his hitbox. This allowed me to stay high and avoid the flamethrower while also keeping safe from all fire bubbles and having time to react if I hit one

Here’s why I found phantom express so hard:

Phase 1 I would use roundabout but stray eyeballs would constantly hit me.

Biggest thing was the pumpkins. Unintentionally parrying their bricks would constantly get me hit, as well as when the side car position was changed right before an attack.

Phase 2 I felt really bad at and supering the skeleton was like pulling hair, constantly getting hit.

Phase 4 was pretty close to my own personal hell, since I had trouble getting to the tail without another parry, the fire felt practically invisible coming out of his heart and it always lasted a long time since so many of my shots would miss. Those bones were so brutal too

What are some bosses you struggled with and why?

What are some harder bosses you had less trouble with and why?

Same, Grim is a joke with Lobber. Just stay on the top clouds.

For Phantom Express, use Converge and Chaser/Crackshot, with Parry Sugar for Charm. Converge will destroy all eyeballs the moment the eye ghost shoots them. Parry Sugar makes maneuvering the cart and parrying the bricks much easier. Chaser lets you cheese the third phase, just stay at one end of the screen, the lightning will never hit you. Chaser also makes the last phase easier since you can just concentrate on dodging stuff without needing to aim.

..I don’t know. I don’t know how you play. Do you use the same load out for every boss? Maybe change it to one that will work better against certain bosses and get good at parrying I guess. I mean deaths are common in Cuphead and after every death you will probably learn more about the boss like understanding how their patterns and attacks work so you can dodge them. Not everyone is a pro at Cuphead like me (I suck at this game also) but I mean your in the third isle and that’s saying something

Best load out for Phantom Express is Roundabout and Spread. I used P.Sugar for awhile then switched to Twin Hearts when I got used to the parry’s and the routine.

First section: stand to the right of the cart and shoot Roundabout non stop, jumping to parry the bricks. Should be short work for the first section.

Second section:

Move cart to the middle and use the spread on the head. You have plenty of time to get the cart where you need it to line up with the Skull Head, so take your time and watch the parry’s . You can also avoid the Hands by standing to the side of the cart.

Third section: Stay to the far right and shoot upwards with the spread, attacking the left Head. When he attacks, jump and dash to avoid his first shot and when he’s lined up with the right Head, jump and use your Energy Beam super. This should take out the left Head. Keep the cart on the far left to avoid the right head’s electricity. Keep farming parry’s from the ghosts, making sure to kill them off the cart, or close to you. Once you have another super, pop it and take out the right Head.

Fourth section:

Cart should be in the middle now. Parry the tail and shoot upwards with the spread when the furnace door is open. Listen for the honk noise, and watch for the smoke ring. If you stay on the cart and don’t jump around, you shouldn’t have any issues with the smoke rings. I was able to watch them out of my peripheral and jump to dodge them and focus mainly on avoiding the flames. Rinse and repeat.

Getting the “you suck” tower status screen is actually very hard

Posted by thebroquadseries · in r/PizzaTower · 4 months ago
post image

The other day I decided to play through the game and do as bad as I could to see what the lowest possible competition percentage you can get at the end is, and in some ways I found it to be harder than the actual game itself.

You basically need to find ways to intentionally get Peppino hurt as often as you can, which isn’t as straightforward as it seems because not all the enemies hurt you, collecting the caged toppings, which is required to progress in the game, gives you a ton of points and often times boosts your rank by a whole letter each time you collect one. And then during pizza time, you’re kind of forced to speed back through the level because of the timer, which means you’re likely unintentionally killing enemies along the way and earning more points from it, and you have less time to keep getting Peppino hurt again.

My goal was to try to finish all levels with D ranks, and because of these factors, it was much harder than playing the level normally. Bosses are also hard to because your rank is dependent on how much you got hurt during the fight, but you obviously still need to beat it anyway. I read that getting anything above D on a level counts towards the completion status, so every D rank you get does lower your final score.

All in all, my efforts only got my score to 52% at the end, giving me the “confused” screen. It seems like this is one of those games that’s both difficult to be good and bad at. It certainly seems impossible to get the “you suck” screen unless you’re intentionally trying and focusing on doing poorly.

Just finished the game on switch and my thoughts

Posted by [deleted] · in r/Cuphead · 6 years ago

I have positive and negative thoughts on the game. I did enjoy it and love the art style of course but I really feel that this was what gave the game all the hub bub. Honestly I find the game it self to be a tad over rated. It was fun and I love the set up of run and gun or just bosses (not mixing) but sometimes I felt like the boss battles were just kind of cheap. I get its kind of a bullet hell game but I found myself REALLY getting cornered sometimes by multiple attacks at once with no other recourse but to take the hit. I must have restarted certain bosses 20 times because their attacks when done simultaneously leave you know where to go.

I dont mind difficult games but usually there is a pattern or system of some sort to learn. This game has you learning attacks but there are almost no patterns. Its just all random. I dont mind random reflex gaming but usually youre dodging 2 attacks max, not 3 or 4. Again the screen gets so crowded you just have no where to go occasionally and it almost becomes a game of luck more than skill. Once the bosses are defeated you dont get a sense of accomplishment but more a sense of relief. I honestly have zero interest in going back for any S rank stuff because it would just be a crap shoot coin flip for a win or lose. Im not trying to bash anyone who did or thinks the accomplished something, if you think that you did, but I usually like to know I accomplished something by knowing I mastered the patterns and gimicks and could easily beat the boss/game near 100% without issue. Otherwise it just always feels like you got lucky. Then add in the constant foreground objects blocking your view and it could be down right cheap feeling.

Either way its still fun, I basically got homing and used that and pea shooter the entire game, with my super blast special (as the other 2 are utter garbage) and the cloud dashing.

Also I played on switch with the patch so there was no weapon cool down dooping for me. I notice online almost everyone who plays through the game and says its easy seems to do this trick and the bosses literally become a joke.

If you had to pick one negative thing on the game what would it be, seriously, no "too short" stuff or anything like that.

The point of these old types of games is that they need some cheapness. Even then, they don't use that much. It just needs more practice.

[deleted] · 6 years ago

Foreground objects mixed with excessive rng is pretty much just cheap artificial difficulty to me.

1 upvotes on reddit
CatAttack1032 · 6 years ago

I don't want excessive rng, but i want basic rng like how the balloon dogs in the beppi fight are randomly into a random pipe.

1 upvotes on reddit
[deleted] · 6 years ago

I don’t think the battles are cheap it’s just learning about positioning at the right time. I experienced being cornered by several projectiles but found it to be user error more than the game.

Now granted some bosses do have random elements like Djimmi’s first phase, but overall the game is fair as long as you’re patient and take time to learn the bosses and their phases.

How is there no skill involved? If this is all a coin flip how come people can get through stages damage-less continuously? Yes you CAN beat the boss with luck but chances are you will beat all but the final phase with skill (on your first victory). The "luck" you are referring to has no way around it in any videogame because of outside circumstances. Let's say for the Phantom Express fight you are on the final phase and if you parried his tail now a fireball would hit you where you stand but your dog barks and distracts you making you parry it 0.5 seconds later so you didn't get hit. That's the only non-reactable "luck" in this game in a final phase. Things like Cagney's briar and Rumor Honeybottom's fists/razor give time to react. As for other phases, you're gonna replay through those phases over and over more than the last so it's better to give a slightly modified experience so it doesn't get boring. They still follow similar patterns, but it may eliminate a few options. A little rng is a good thing.

I don’t even know why I started this. Somewhere halfway through, I questioned everything — more than once. This is, without a doubt, one of the most satisfying and proudest Platinums I’ve ever earned — right up there with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Good job!

I feel you man, this is a rewarding one! And such a blast to play, too.. stunning to look at, smooth to play, the music's on point, I mean what else can you ask for?

Expert was a brutal run for me, some of those bosses beat my ASS. I remember when I finally beat Wally just springing off the couch like "YUUSSSSSS!!!!"😅

I’m working on that right now! I need to beat King Dice without damage and beat the Devil on expert and I’m clear. One of my favorite games of all time.

How to beat Phantom Express in cuphead

Here are some key strategies to beat Phantom Express in Cuphead:

  1. Understand the Phases:

    • The fight consists of three main phases: the train, the ghostly heads, and the final phase with the ghost conductor.
    • Familiarize yourself with each phase's attack patterns to anticipate and dodge effectively.
  2. Stay Mobile:

    • Constantly move to avoid incoming attacks. The train will shoot projectiles, and the ghost heads will also attack from above.
    • Use the dash ability to evade attacks and reposition yourself quickly.
  3. Target Priorities:

    • Focus on the ghostly heads first, as they can deal significant damage. Take them out quickly to reduce the number of projectiles on the screen.
    • Aim for the Conductor in the final phase, but be aware of the train's attacks.
  4. Use Super Arts Wisely:

    • Save your Super Arts for critical moments, especially when the Conductor is vulnerable. The Super Art can deal significant damage and help clear the screen of projectiles.
  5. Choose the Right Weapons:

    • Weapons like the Spread Shot are effective for close-range attacks, while the Chaser can help you hit targets without needing to aim too much.
    • Experiment with different combinations to find what works best for your playstyle.
  6. Practice Makes Perfect:

    • Don’t get discouraged by initial failures. Each attempt will help you learn the patterns and improve your timing.

Takeaway: Patience and practice are key. Focus on learning the attack patterns, staying mobile, and using your weapons and abilities strategically. Good luck!
