TL;DR Most of the codes in Journal 3 have been decoded, but there remains one unsolved cipher. Resources like Wattpad can help with decoding efforts.
Decoding Resources
For those looking to decode messages in Journal 3, there are resources available online that provide decoded versions of the text. One such resource is a Wattpad story where you can find decoded pages from Journal 3 [1:1]. This can be helpful for checking your notes and ensuring you're on the right track with your decoding efforts.
Unsolved Cipher
Despite the extensive decoding work done by fans, there is still one substituted Polybius cipher that has not been solved. It was written in very faint lettering and remains a mystery [1:2]. This unsolved cipher adds an element of intrigue and challenge for those interested in cracking it.
Types of Ciphers Used
Journal 3 employs various ciphers, including Vigenère and Caesar ciphers. For example, one page uses a Vigenère cipher with the key "Pines," which Ford couldn't decode because he didn't find the key [4:1]. The book also features classic three-letter back Caesar cipher coding
[4:2], and in some versions, mirrored text is used
[4:6].
The Nature of Ford's Research
Some fans have critiqued the journals for lacking detailed scientific data, arguing that Ford's approach resembles more of an explorer documenting his findings rather than a scientist conducting rigorous research [3:1]. The journals serve as field notes capturing the supernatural deviations from the natural world, similar to other fictional guides like the Spiderwick Chronicles
[3:2]. It's suggested that the journals were meant to tell a story rather than present academic papers
[3:4].
Fan Creations Inspired by Journal 3
Fans have been inspired by Journal 3 to create their own works, including books filled with ciphers and alternate universe plots [5:1]
[5:5]. These creations highlight the impact of Gravity Falls on its audience and the creativity it inspires.
Hi! I recently bought journal 3, and I was just wondering if everything has been decoded in it, also if yeah is there a website with the decoded messages? I wanna check my notes, see if I'm on the right track with the codes. Thanks!
There is one substituted polybius cipher that hasn't been solved. It's nigh impossible to crack and in and of itself was written in very faint lettering.
Huh what, I havent heard about this and I've owned both versions, where is this referenced?
On the page 'THE MUSE HAS SPOKEN' at the bottom.
Here , just click on the page that you want, everything is there as far as I know.
Thank you!!!
It says:
!THE TIME YOURE WASTING DELIGHTS ME!<
I’m dumb. How do you decode it
Lol i mean it not a waste if we are able to learn new language
honest reaction:
...WHAT THE FUCK
bills back
Wait until you find the one that reads "BE SURE TO DRINK YOUR OVALTINE"
Hi, before I continue I would like to say that I am a big fan of the journals, but I’ve always noticed something about them.
Ford is supposed to be a scientist that is researching gravity Falls cataloging his findings in his journals, but his journals aren’t really that much of a research.
I mean, where is all of the data? Real researchers have lots of data behind them. trial and error lots more details, and are a lot more polished.
I get that for use his journals as a quick way to catalog his findings, but the amount of information he puts on them is so small it almost reads like he didn’t actually study the creatures. The descriptions he gives of them and other information is minuscule
Even in the portal page. you would think that the page would contain a lot of really complex information, numbers, or instructions, but they contain some instructions and a joke
It reads like a personal diary with extra steps and pretty drawings. Not so much like a research.
It almost feels like he is only writing the highlights, and honestly that might just be it. He probably just catalogued the most important parts of his research in his journals while all of the other, not that important stuff or the boring stuff like the math the trial and error, etc. Was kept in the lab, notebooks, papers, chalkboards, etc.
I mean, we can see a lot more books in the underground basement where the portal is and in a tale of two stands in the flashback, we can see Stanley with a lot of loose papers withdrawing to the portal.
I feel like the journals are more in the style of a field, guide or bestiary with his own personal notes for himself when he ventures out and that he probably had all of the data stored somewhere else. But to call the journals, his entire research would be ridiculous. They virtually contain nothing valuable.
What do you guys think?
Tl;DR: the journals are not that good of a research and they are part diary, part bestiary, part field guide.
To be fair, if you're researching the supernatural and paranormal then you're gonna jot down just how much they deviate from the natural world and not measure how much they do that. Reminds me of the Spiderwick Chronicles; the field guide was meant to capture the differentiating characteristics of the Fae from our world and from each other. It's a reference, not a scientific report.
Also it can be argued that Ford kept majority of the nitty gritty in his mind. He's a very goal driven, all business scientist with a sense of urgency; especially after he met Bill. Even when he hid the journals, I believe he said they were kept around as a warning to those who encounter the weirdness in Gravity Falls.
I feel like he’s a very dramatic guy. He probably fantasized about someone reading his journals some day and that’s why he wrote them the way he did
Both of the Stan’s are romantics and dreamers. They tell stories and want to explore the edges of the known and unknown.
Other people have made good points on this, but I want to highlight an important thing: the only journal we really know well is Journal 3. We know that Journal 2 contains Bill's summoning spell, so I would theorize that Journal 1 was all very meticulous and orderly with lots of properly catalogued research and experiment results and data. By Journal 2, things had started to go off the rails because Ford was only in his right mind part-time, with Bill doing a lot of the work, and a few pages into Journal 3, Ford got wise to Bill's scam and started to become a lot more paranoid and reclusive. So of course Journal 3 doesn't read like "proper" science, because of everything that Ford had gone through by that point.
I really like this theory.
I think this is one of those things where we have to say "It's a cartoon", and in the case of the printed real-life Journal 3, it's meant to be telling a story. If it was written as actual academic papers, it wouldn't be nearly as engaging.
I think he started his research but then got distracted building the portal for Bill Cipher.
I 100% agree with this
I think they’re meant to be field notes rather than actual academic research notes/conclusions/findings. Especially since Fiddleford gives him that separate thesis to turn in when warning him about the dangers of pursuing the portal.
That's kinda the point - he's not really a scientist but an explorer documenting his finds. Ford approaches the supernatural world like an old school fantasy adventurer in undiscovered lands and thinks he's paving the way for future research. His inventions are mad science even before he meets Bill with little to no documentation of the process or function; that's why it took Stan 30 years to get it up and running again because he had to figure things out from first principles and incomplete notes.
It's also why Dipper's so enamored of it all. It's seems mysterious, vague & romantic to fire up the imagination, not lab instructions with data sheets to back up the claims. The Journals read like a fantasy novel that just happens to be real to him but he quickly discovers that the exciting blurb offers little useful information, just enough to cause trouble.
I agree with you, I feel like this is a great way to put it.
So I just now bought the Journal #3 from the show, so far I got on this page and I need help to decipher what it says. Can any one of the fandom know what all the words say.
Hey, Dipper and Mabel! Blendin here. I'm currently living in the year 1883, and I hid this letter in hopes that it would one day reach you. (I got the idea from the movie "Return Backwards to the Past Again 3," which is required viewing for Time Academy freshmen.) You've probably got a lot of questions, and after the events of Weirdmageddon, man, I don't blame you!
So here's what happened: After Globnar, I was getting a LOT of flak for losing a gladiator fight to two children. Even though I got my job back (thanks for that, by the way!), my fellow officers kept calling me hurtful nicknames. Time Baby himself called me No-Friendin Blandin! Do you know what it's like to live like that?
Just as I was thinking I would give anything for Time Baby's respect, this weird triangle guy showed up in my dreams and said that he would make sure Time Baby never bothered me again. All I had to do was shake his hand! I've never been great at making decisions under pressure, and, well, you know the rest! When I awoke, that stupid triangle had used my body to travel through time and destroy the entire universe–and Time Baby, too!
Luckily, Time Baby isn't dead...exactly. It will take one thousand years for his molecules to reconstitute, and when they do, boy, is he gonna be cranky! The time agents also survived–they only send their holo-projections out on dangerous missions. But Lolph and Dundgren were FURIOUS about what I did!
Of course, this means that there is a dimension–wide manhunt of agents trying to find me and bring me to justice. But it was all a mistake!
The last thing I want is to go back to jail, so I've been hiding out in the past. It was fun for a while–seeing the sights, chatting with historical figures, visiting the ‘50s to try to learn the Twist. (I accidentally twisted my ankle and couldn't walk for a week.)
I wanted to check out the old West, too, but when I traveled here, I accidentally appeared right in front of a train and my time tape was shattered into fifty pieces. (Also, I think the train might have gone off the rails. Hopefully that isn't in the history books!)
Anyway, I just wanted to say not to worry about me! I've managed to blend in to the populace, and I got a job as a pocket watch repairman. I've also caught one of those cool gold rush-era diseases that're so popular in these times, and I am loving the nostalgia! Thanks for all your help, and if any time agents come looking for me, tell them you don't know nothing!
Blendin Blenjamin Blandin, 1883
I also decode it but for the Turkish version of the book, it's still 3 letter back Classic Cipher coding though.(I still have it in my pc decoded, it took like a few days for me to do because I tried to make it easier with writing a code for it in Python(I was an beginner at that time)) I just wanted to share this that's all.
In english it's a vigenère cipher with the key Pines. That's why Ford couldn't decode it, because he didn't found the key (it was on the box of the letter) and he would have known a caesar chipher with 3 letters back. Why did the translaters do this?
Thank you
I'm pretty sure it's a caesar cipher
If you do me I can the reason I can’t is because it won’t let me send pictures of the translated version in comments.
In the Hebrew version it’s just mirrored text if I remember correctly
Thanks !!!
I made this book when Season 2 started coming out. Please ignore the cringe plot. There are actually more pages than I showed, but there is such a delusional alternate universe that I'm embarrassed to read it. I even added different ciphers there, like in GF.
Oh wow that's legitimately really cool
I think this is cool
You should be very proud of yourself for making this
This is awesome, you really put body and spirit in this
Dude, that is a full on fucking grimoire.
My hard cover of journal 3 is being delivered today, if anybody has it can you tell me if there’s secrets hidden that you can only see just like in the show?
I bought it for my oldest and we had a blast looking through it! It's a great extension of the lore.
Absolutely! Otherwise it wouldn't be a Gravity Falls item!
There are not. Tons of codes but only the limited black light edition has those black light secrets.
Unfortunately, it was very limited run and they cost a freaking fortune now.
That said, it's a great book. You'll have fun reading it.
Yeah, that’s why I got the regular version but any journal is better than no journal
It is. And if you have a hard time decoding just Google "gravity falls journal 3 decoded" and one of the first entries will be a link to an excellent post on this subreddit.
Just get a black light pen and write your own secrets
There ya go! People online have actually gone page by page to show all the blacklight stuff.
Hi guys, new member. I just wanted to share my replica in production of Journal 3. Opinions?
It's looking great so far. Too bad, the pages aren't yellow enough 🙄 (/j)
So, I just bought Journal 3 yesterday and know it's been out for some time and that I can just go online and search for all the Coded messages and everything decoded. But i kinda want to decode it all myself. The only things i need are the encoders/ciphers. I'm aware that you need multiple ones to decode everything in the book i just don't know where to find them. Can I have some help where to find them? I plan to print them out and use them for when I'm offline.
http://themysteryofgravityfalls.com/ For online decoding.
Here, in Journal 3, I have noticed a spelling mistake on this particular page (as highlighted in attached image). Previously by Dipper and seen in other published novels (including Lost Legends) it was spelt as 'Weirdmageddon', two uses of the letter 'd' instead of two of the letter 'g'. I'm sure this was just a small mistake, but I did find it rather irritating once I'd noticed the error. I simply wished to point this out.
Literally unreadable now 😤
Okay so if you were new to gravity falls content you might not know that there was many books made from the TV show gravity falls which streamed on Disney for a while the show contained two seasons and has made three books one of them what was made officially as the gravity falls journal 3 which included two editions the standard edition and a blacklight edition with 10,000 copies. If you have seen gravity falls you will know that well it is a very fun shirt to watch or straight up that there is a large amount of background codes and ciphers and the credits this is the same for most of the books that they produce including journal 3 on one of the pages I noticed a larger amount of what appeared to be a long squares and shorts or rectangles I was confused by this so I went on YouTube and reddit to see if I could find anybody that is posted anything about the small and short squares when I come up with nothing I thought they might have just been a design choice but if you look at all of them and you might see that some of them have a blue version of them and mixed in with the standard Red version this intrigued me because I see that in a large amount of the gravity falls codes in journal 3 that they have blue versions of codes that when strung together will make a secret message I believe personally that this might be a new code in the book maybe Morse code among some other things I have not been able to crack it yet but I'm trying to and I would like help solving it please inform me if you have any information on it. thank you.
Hmmm I was curious about these as well, since these symbols are also in the book of Bill, pretty sure Hanahyperfixates asked Alex Hirsch in an interview and he said that he’s oretty sure it’s not a code? Idk maybe the art designer hid the code?
Hanahyperfixates (If you're interested in watching gf related video essays their account is a must watch btw) released an interview with Alex Hirsch on their channel and asked this question but Alex said that - as far as he knows - it's not a code.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Slg-lwF23hU (watch from 33.22)
thank you
okay so update. according to an interview that alex had with Hannah hyperfixates it may be a code made by the books art designer but he does not know but he says it will be really cool if it is I'm going to currently make it my mission to find out if this is a code
damn imagine hiding a code FROM the creator just for funsies
Ill keep this post tagged in case you find something
