TL;DR Gravity Falls is filled with hidden codes and ciphers that add layers of mystery and fun to the show. These include Caesar ciphers, Atbash ciphers, and number-letter substitution codes.
Caesar Cipher Codes
One of the most common types of codes used in Gravity Falls is the Caesar cipher, where letters are shifted a certain number of places down the alphabet. For example, in the episode "Northwest Mansion Mystery," a code translates to "STAY AWAY FROM CIPHER. SHE HAS THE PROTECTION OF THE LUMBERFOLKS SPIRITS" using a Caesar cipher shifted three letters [1:1]. The theme song also contains a Caesar cipher message stating "Stan is not what he seems"
[3:2].
Number-Letter Substitution Codes
Another type of code involves substituting numbers for letters, where 1 equals A, 2 equals B, and so on. This method is used in the credits of episodes, such as the message at the end of "Bottomless Pit," which decodes to "Next: 'Footbot two: Grunkle's Grevenge'" [4]
[5:1]. These codes often serve as Easter eggs or jokes from series creator Alex Hirsch
[4:4].
Atbash Cipher and Other Techniques
The show also employs other cryptographic techniques like the Atbash cipher, which reverses the alphabet (A=Z, B=Y, etc.). Fans have used tools like Cryptii to decode these messages [2:1]. Each episode has an end screen code, some of which provide hints or teases about future plot points
[5:1].
Community Involvement and Resources
The Gravity Falls community actively engages in deciphering these codes, sharing resources and guides to help new fans understand the hidden messages [3:1]
[4:1]. There are walkthroughs and kid-friendly videos available to assist younger viewers in decoding these secrets themselves
[3:3].
Additional Insights
While many of these codes are just fun throwaway jokes, others contribute to the overarching narrative and character development. For instance, personal references by Alex Hirsch, like teasing his sister Ariel through coded messages, add a personal touch to the series [4:6].
I was looking up codes on this is not a thisisnotawebsitedotcom.comI noticed something in very small text beneath the last entry when I came across this here's what I got so far :VDD DZDB LURP FISKAU. VKH KDV WKH SURWHRWLRQRI WKH OXPEHUIR ONV VSLULWV. I think it's out of the Caesar Cipher or the A-Z Cipher
got it ?? it says :SAA AWAY IROM CFPHXR. SHE HAS THE PROTEOTIONOF THE LUMBERFO LKS SPIRITS.
some some of it doesn't make sense any of you got ideas on what it means ??
I'm currently halfway through deciphering it right now
SAA AWAY IROM CFPHXR. SHE HAS THE PROTEOTIONOF THE LUMBERFO LKS SPIRITS
This is what I got.
STAY AWAY FROM CIPHER. SHE HAS THE PROTECTION OF THE LUMBERFOLKS SPIRITS.
you know it's getting suspicious how much gravity falls content we're getting
I'm going to edit this this again once I figured out the code this might take a couple minutes
Ping me when you do I need to know
SAA AWAY IROM CFPHXR. SHE HAS THE PROTEOTIONOF THE LUMBERFO LKS SPIRITS.
Good job!
This has been documented. It translates to "STAY AWAY FROM HER CIPHER. SHE HAS THE PROTECTION OF THE LUMBERFOLKS SPIRITS." It is a reference to Pacifica earning the forgiveness and respect of the lumberjack ghost in the episode Northwest Mansion Mystery.
Edit: Forgot to mention that the code uses a caeser cipher, shifted three letters. Also in the future for codes that are typed out like this you can copy-paste them to help prevent accidentally missing letters.
sorry :(
Why are you apologizing?
oh ok
So you’ve been enjoying the awesomeness that is Gravity Falls, but you’ve started to notice some things that are unusual, weird combinations of letters and/or numbers, odd whispers, flashes of strange images. What is going on? What are these hidden messages?
For background, series creator Alex Hirsch loves codes and ciphers and hidden messages. So when he got to create a show, with a strong mystery element, he hid several things in the show for eagle-eyed viewers. Some are just gags or jokes, while others provide hints or teases of things that are/will be revealed later in the series.
One of the first things people notice is that at the end of every single episode, at the end of the end credits, is a cryptogram. Most of them are seemingly random groups of letters, some of them are numbers. These start out easier and get progressively harder as the series goes on. In this post I will show you how to decode them for yourself, using spoiler tags to give more information if you are having difficulty. I won’t actually translate them for you, if you just want to know what they say you can find that information elsewhere.
The trick to deciding them is found in the theme song at the beginning of the episode. At the very end, if you listen carefully, you can hear an odd whispering sound. You won’t be able to quite understand it, because it’s actually recorded backwards. You’ll need to find a way to listen to it in reverse. The phrase changes throughout the series.
Starting with Season 1, Episode 1 “Tourist Trapped”, the message is >!Three letters back!<. What that means is we will be using a >!Ceasar -3!< Cipher. If you need help figuring out what that means, click here: >!With a “Ceasar Cipher”, you shift each letter of the code some number of letters forward or backward in the alphabet. So “Three letters back” means to use a Ceasar Cipher with a shift of -3. At the beginning and end of the alphabet you’ll wrap around. An encoded letter A will become X, B will become Y, C=Z, D=A, E=B, etc.!< This method of encoding messages is one of the most commonly used ones in the show, so if you’re unsure I’d generally try this first.
Starting on S01E07 “Double Dipper”, a new cipher is used. There is hint in the cryptogram for the previous episode, and the reversed whisper changes to >!Switch A with Z!<. This tells us we will now be using an >!Atbash!< Cipher. If you need further help figuring out what that means, click here: >!We will now simply flip the positions of all the letters in the alphabet, so A=Z, B=Y, etc.!<
Beginning with episode S01E14 “Bottomless Pit”, we have our third cipher. This one is a series of numbers instead of letters, and the whispered credits message is >!26 letters!<. The cipher is known as the >!A1Z26!< Cipher. It is decoded this way: >!Simply substitute the appropriate letter of the alphabet corresponding to the number. A is 1, B is 2, etc.!<
The last episode of Season 1, “Gideon Rises”, introduces us to a more complicated cipher. During the end credits we see various pages from the Journal. On one of them, “Possible Hiding Places”, we have a cipher that we decode using our current >!A1Z26!< Cipher. The result tells us to >!REVERSE THE CIPHERS!<. This is what we need to decode the cryptogram at the very end of the credits, along with some other ciphers in the future. If you need help figuring out what to do, click here: >!We will be using all three of the ciphers used so far, in reverse order. First we use A1Z26 to turn the numbers into letters, then we flip them around using Atbash, and then shift them three letters back using our Ceasar Cipher. This method is known as the “Combined” Cipher.!<
So that covers how to decode the cryptograms from Season 1. There is a separate cipher worked throughout the “Dipper’s Guide to the Unexplained” shorts that I won’t go into here. Moving to Season 2, we will start having 2 different ciphers for each episode.
The first cipher we will discuss is the “easier” one. At the very end of the episode, after the credits, a journal-esque splash page will appear with a symbol representative of the episode surrounded by a numeric cipher. To decode this, we will use >!the Combined Cipher from “Gideon Rises” - A1Z26, followed by Atbash, followed by Ceasar -3!<.
The much more complicated cipher is the one at the end of the end credits, before the splash page. The backwards whisper at the end of the opening credits tells us how to solve this one: >!Key Vigenère!<. This means we need to use a >!Vigenère!< Cipher. The way to do this is: >!You will need a “keyword” or “keyphrase” to decrypt it. This is basically a very complicated cipher where every letter uses a unique Ceasar cipher based on the corresponding letter of the keyword, repeated as necessary. You can read online how to do this yourself, but I would highly recommend using an online resource that lets you enter the keyword and automatically translate it.!<
In order to decode this cipher, you will need an additional piece of information found in the episode: >!The keyword or phrase. Somewhere in each episode, hidden in the background, you will find a small key symbol with a word/phrase next to it, usually tangentially related to the episode. To see what this looks like, in “Scary-oke”, look carefully at the very beginning of the episode when we see Gideon in his jail cell. Written on the wall next to his head is the key and the word for that episode. Each episode has its own unique keyword hidden somewhere in it, so you’ll have to carefully look in the background and freeze frame to see the word.!<
There are a few other ciphers used when we see in the Journal pages in the show, and also in the physical copy of Journal 3 (and the other physical books as well). But hopefully this post will let you decode the “main” ciphers more or less on your own. Once you know what cipher(s) you are working with, some websites that will help you are:
The Mystery of Gravity Falls (WARNING: if you want to solve the ciphers yourself, stay on the main page and avoid clicking on the other tabs at the top)
An extra tool I've used to help me out is cryptii. You can add multiple "pipes" for combining ciphers.
Are there secret codes at the end of the theme song? My 7yrs has discovered this gem of a show (finally something I don’t mind watching with him) and is obsessed with discovering all of the secret codes hidden throughout the series. Too the point that he spent at least 20 minutes trying to pause the intro song just so he can see the cipher at the end. Any good “walkthroughs” or kid friendly YouTube videos that may help this obsession?
It's a picture of the cipher wheel with 'Stan is not what he seems' in Caesar cipher.
Here’s something I wrote a while back, that should hopefully help you out. It uses a lot of spoiler tags so you can reveal to the level you would like:
Oh man this is awesome! Thank you so much for replying. I am wanting him to learn to decode these himself but having a key will help me, help him.
I don't know if you know this but,
Have you guys ever noticed the numbers at the end of the credits of the episodes. They are messages. Equate the numbers to corresponding letters, and you get the message!
Like 1 = A and 2 = B, and so on.
Like this at the end of bottomless pit, it says: "Next: "Footbot two: Grunkle's Grevenge""
You must be new. It was so fun when the episodes were first airing and everyone was trying to figure out what they meant.
It can still be fun now if you’re new! Just decode them in order as you watch the show
Nah man, the way these guys on the subreddit reacted to what was just wonder at an amazing show. It makes me realize the internet is filled with anger and butthurts. It's better to stay alone these days than to risk posting something you find interesting. I just wish I had a friend to discuss gravity falls with. I have so much to talk about.
Geez you’re incredibly negative. People have posted a bunch of stuff to talk to you about it and you act like that?
Pretty sure at least half this sub knows this. People tend to analyze every pixel of gravity falls
Yeah, they're mostly little Easter eggs from Alex. Like at the end of The Time Travelers Pig, it says something like "happy now Ariel?" Because she always wanted a pet pig when they were kids, so he gave Mabel one.
Wasn’t that one for Boyz Crazy cause Ariel really liked boybands
No, but that was another one aimed at her. Like any good brother, he's made a career out of teasing his sister.
Been watching gravity falls and found this code and I dechiphered it. Nothing important but fun. " Next up: 'footbot two grunkle's grevenge"
He had the best story
There was even a robot for the kids!
Footbot: I love you Stan
Every single episode has and end screen code. And some of them are a lot more important than a fun throwaway joke.
Just finished it. Wow what a ride. Time to start my rewatch and look for all the stuff I missed the first time!
It's a cipher. It can be found on the GF wiki
Thanks, I found it
It's amazing how many secrets GF holds. It's my rewatch and I still notice new things almost every episode
It's a code like atbash ceaser cypher etc. Etc
use the cipher a1z26
Is that the Netflix player? I didn't know gravity falls was on Netflix!
In the US it’s on Hulu and not Netflix.
It is on Netflix at least in some European countries
NOOOO!!! *cries in Canadian*
WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN MASON?
I've just finished deciphering the messages from the trailer and I've noticed I'm not the only insane enough person to do it, so I'd like to know your methods. I'm ESL, so it took me +2h to crack it, but what can I say, I get so absorbed by this kind of stuff. It was fun. Took me back to Gravity Falls times.
I did a lot of guessing. Letter L was the first one I got thanks to the FILL (double L) one (although I was thinking of KILL or WILL). I was getting stuck with the short messages, so I jumped to the long ones. I got E after googling what the most common letter is in english. Then I got the THE at the beginning, the SHALL SUFFER (double F), SHALL WITNESS (double S) and then OF, HE, WHO, BUT, etc. From there I brute forced the rest of the message.
It's a cool way to hype us the puzzle nerds. The Mark of the Hand looks like something very relevant to the plot. We'll see. Until then, you can share your decoding process here, like I did. I'm curious.
There's a video I watched that deciphered the first one.
I'll have to decipher the messages when I'm done with work tomorrow. The messages I saw are really interesting
The last one says Buckle up
Stole this from someone else, but the first one is:
“The body of he who bears the mark of the hand shall suffer injury, shall feel pain, shall witness death, but is forever tethered to the soul. Upon injury, the body will persist. Bolstered by the mark, it will restore itself but never to completion. Upon death, the seal will awaken and bind the soul to the body once more The body of he who bears the mark of the hand has become a tomb for his soul evermore and evermore”
The second is "Fill your parents cars with bees"
Quite a while ago, back when this sub only had about 100 members, someone deciphered the alphabet! I bet if you look around hard enough someone will have a key. I'd send it here if i had one saved but not on my computer XD
Check the fandom for all codes but it's more fun to crack them yourself, I am guessing it's combined cypher (look it up in the fandom)
Whats the fandom called?
Vignere cipher. The word PINES is on a box, and an etching of a key...
Where did you get the vingerene key? which box?
Oh nevermind sorry I just saw the top text...
The letter decoded reads:
>!Hey, Dipper and Mabel! Blendin here. I’m Currently living in the year 1883, and I hid this letter in hopes that it would one day reach you. (I got the idea from the movie "Return Backwards to the Past Again 3," which is required viewing for time Academy freshmen.) You’ve probably got a lot of questions, and after the events of Weirdmageddon, man, i don’t blame you! So here’s what happened: After Globnar, I was getting a LOT of flak for losing a gladiator fight to two children. Even though I got my job back (thanks for that, by the way!), my fellow officers kept calling me hurtful nicknames. Time Baby himself called me No-Friendin Blandin! Do you know what it’s like to live like that? Just as I was thinking I would give anything for Time Baby’s respect, this weird triangle guy showed up in my dreams and said what he would make sure Time Baby never bothered me again. All I had to do was shake his hand! I’ve never been great at making decisions under pressure, and, well, you know the rest! When I awoke, that stupid triangle had used my body to travel through time and destroy the entire universe-and Time Baby, too! Luckily, Time Baby isn’t dead… exactly. It will take one thousand years for his molecules to reconstitute, and when they do, boy, is he gonna be cranky! The time agents also survived-they only send their holo-projections out on dangerous missions. But Lolph and Dundgren were FURIOUS about what I did! Of course, this means that there is a dimension-wide manhunt of agents trying to find me and bring me to justice. But it was all a mistake! The last thing I want is to go back to jail, so I’ve been hiding out in the past. It was fun for a while-seeing the sights, chatting with historical figures, visiting the ‘50s to try to learn the Twist. (I accidentally twisted my ankle and couldn’t walk for a week.) I wanted to check out the old West, too, but when I traveled here, I accidentally appeared` right in front of a train and my time tape was shattered into fifty pieces. (Also, I think the train might have gone off the rails. Hopefully that isn’t in the history books!) Anyway, I just wanted to say not to worry about me! I’ve managed to blend in to the populace, and I got a job as a pocket watch repairman, I’ve also caught one of those cool gold rush-era diseases that’re so popular in these times, and I am loving the nostalgia! Thanks for all your help, and if any time agents come looking for me, tell them you don’t know nothing! Blendin Blenjamin Blandin, 1883 <!
Put > ! before the start and ! < at the end (without spaces) to spoiler tag it >!like this!<.
R/madlads
I’m newer to the game, so I’m sure someone has decoded these before, BUT GUYS WHAT DO THEY SAY? Is there some kind of key out there?
Considering every language user gets the same graphics, no I don’t think they are a code. You have to consider that unlike gravity falls, which was made in English and considering English speakers first and foremost, this is a game made in Korea, and targeting as many people as they can possibly hook.
It's not. These are made up hieroglyphs for Golden Cheese's episode. You can see them during 18-20 too and they clearly mean nothing there (there's three of the same in a row, which aren't punctuation, but I'm not sure of many words who use three letters in a row...)
If you look closer, the first triangle is like a triforce thingy, while the other two are just normal. Unless there has been direct confirmation from the devs that they mean nothing, I would literally bet my life savings that those are ciphers.
There's actually 3 different triangles - one triforce, one outline, one filled.
All signs point to not a cipher.
There's no double letters, and no obvious "e" letter which is most commonly used.
Also, the egg -> bird glyphs definitely make sense...as hieroglyphs relating to the golden cheese bird.
Use those life savings to translate it then 😂 and I'm not saying there's a pattern of three IN THIS ONE. I said it's in 18-20 lmfao
It's possible the 3 repeating letters is some kind of ellipsis (the dot dot dot punctuation)
It's not. Punctuation is done normally and separately from it.
i think people are misunderstanding this post this is so funny to me as someone who loves gravity falls and Egyptian history😆🫶
Do you not know what hieroglyphics are?
Yes, I’m aware of what hieroglyphics are, but when you look at the way they appear multiple times, and how some are right next to each other, it looks a lot like they’re meant to represent letters. I’m 1000% certain this is a substitution cipher.
Thats what hieroglyphs are, its a basically a cipher if you wanna think abt it that way? Also they end up meaning nothing
Yeah, it happens to the best of us bud. I once tries to figure out some miniature color ciphers from TBOB… I think it was in the one with the zipper. Though the colors were so small, nothing helped. I even got additional equipment like magnifying glasses and stuff. Still couldn’t figure it out. The book print made all colors look so similar it was hard to defy them.
So, different issue, but same cause. Sometimes the print makes life so much harder fr
Yes, the colour ciphers are the worst. Maybe it is because when you know what it should be then you can see it and so it was ok for the publishers?
We see you, Eda Clawthorne!
Umm that’s Marilyn?
Marilyn and Eda have been confirmed to be the same person.
thats what i thought this was talking about at first
