TL;DR
Navigating Shadow of the Erdtree
The map in the "Shadow of the Erdtree" DLC is vertically layered, meaning you start high up and need to find paths downward. This can be confusing if you're used to more flat maps [1:3]. Look for Scadutree Blessings as they significantly affect your damage and defense, making them crucial for surviving the DLC
[1:1]
[3:1].
Quest Tracking and Missable Content
Elden Ring does not have an in-game system for tracking side quests, but there are apps and websites that can help you manually track them [2:1]. Online guides can also provide lists of missable weapons and spells
[2:1]. It's recommended to follow a guide on YouTube or use sites like Fextralife to avoid missing important quests and items
[2:4]
[5:6].
Preparation and Strategy
Before entering the DLC, it's advisable to complete the base game and reach a level between 120-150 [3:1]. The DLC is considered challenging, potentially harder than previous expansions like Old Hunters
[3:2]. Bringing spirit summons can be helpful for difficult encounters
[3:2]. Additionally, leveling up vigor and focusing on a favorite build can make your journey smoother
[5:3].
Exploration and Combat Tips
For new players, experiencing the game blind adds to the discovery and enjoyment [5:1]. Starting with a simple build, such as strength, can be beneficial
[5:2]. Don't worry about missing some quests; focus on having fun and using consumables wisely
[5:3]. If you encounter tough enemies, consider exploring different areas or running past them
[5:7].
Additional Advice
Gathering Scadutree Fragments is essential for increasing your power in the DLC [3:1]. Remember that lighting graces can propel questlines forward, so be mindful of this when exploring new areas
[2:5]. Finally, enjoy the surprises and challenges that Elden Ring offers, as exploration often leads to unexpected discoveries

I am having trouble getting around in Shadow of the Erd Tree. I'm trying to get to new sections but can't figure out what roads to traverse. I figured out that one section was locked behind a boss (Rellana).
Is every section locked behind a boss fight?
I've tried googling answers and searching this sub with no luck. Maybe I'm just dumb. I am brand new to Souls games. The base game was pretty wide open and I could go almost anywhere right from the beginning.
you can go down from a place near thollier
if you already reached shadow altus, search moorth ruins
Thank you. I’ll try both these tips.
Very few sections are really locked behind bosses, matter of fact you can bypass Rellana entirely as well.
The obvious roads lead along a very linear and short path from major boss to major boss, but you'll want to move away from that path and explore a lot. Scadutree Blessings are the most important thing to look out for, since they significantly affect how much damage you do and take in return; they are more important than leveling in the DLC.
In general, the map in the DLC is vertically layered, with you starting quite high up. So look for ways down, hidden openings in cliff walls or even a cave might lead to a new part of the map you haven't seen before, or only seen from afar. A lot is also purely optional and can be missed when you just follow the most obvious paths.
In general, this goes back to the days of DS1, where understanding the interconnected nature of the world and how to unlock the connections was as much part of the puzzle as was combat and bosses. Base game ER is more like an open field, where you can just more or less go straight to where you want to go, with few notable exceptions. The DLC on the other hand is more like multiple smaller fields partially layered on top and connected via tunnels and bridges.
Thank you. Reading this made so much sense. I was assuming the map was flat. I never realized it was levels stacked on top of one another.
It's been a while since I beat the base game and the DLC, but I never really got to enjoy the narrative due to a busy life schedule. Now that my life has settled down, I'm thinking of starting NG+ and immerse myself in the lore - but I'm feeling overwhelmed with the game.
Is there any way to keep track of side quests? I burned the tree and defeated Messmer early and ended up skipping some quest by accident, so I'd like avoid repeating those mistakes.
Is there a list of missable weapons or spells like Milicent Prosthesis, Ansbach Crossbow, Sword of Light or Bale's Tyranny? Basically things that can only be obtained if you made specific choice. If possible, I'd like to obtain everything by the end of second playthrough.
Is there any way to make navigation easier? I've forgotten all the secret passages and warp locations; and the maps are so huge, I remember spending hours just circling around to find the next site of graces. Fighting a difficult boss is much more fun than exploring the Shadow Realm with its multi-layered areas.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. This is only my second FromSoftware game (first one was Sekiro) so I don't know if things were supposed to be this confusing. I love the challenging combat and boss fights, but it often like I was thrown in a fantasy world with no guide whatsoever.
This guide is fantastic for following quest lines. The best help I can offer.
This is an amazing write up; even better than what I was searching for, actually. Online guides are usually divided by NPC, so I was afraid I might get locked out if I accessed some areas early. Thanks for telling me about it!
General rule of thumb: lighting graces in new areas beyond Limgrave seem to be the trigger to propelling questlines forward with the only two exceptions I found being Diallos and Patches where merely visiting those areas are what propel them forward.
Getting to Mt. Gelmir automatically moves Patches to that zone which causes you to miss his encounter in Limgrave and Liurnia. Likewise, I've seen it to where going to Liurnia too soon even without lighting graces can cause Diallos to not show up in the Roundtable Hold at all nor his location in Liurnia.
As long as you keep these two in mind and try to at least do those quests in Limgrave before proceeding, you'll generally be okay going to whichever area you want out the gate as long as you make sure to not light graces before you've successfully checked off each NPC's starting quests in those starting areas.
I didn't even know that activating graces could lock me out of some quests. I thought I could always do them later as long as I haven't burned the Erdtree. Guess that explains why some NPCs are missing from my playthrough.
I always play the game by myself first and then for NG+ I follow a 100% guide on YT. Weapons, spells, quests, items, etc. this game is MASSIVE the DLC alone is a game itself. You are bound to miss a ton of things, hence why following a guide on YT might help, they warn you about things not to do so that you don’t mess up any quest lines which in souls games are very easy to mess up. Hope this helps.
It's massive, alright. I've been using Fextralife site to try and complete as much as possible on the playthrough, but there's so many areas to explore. Shadow Realm felt as massive as Limgrave... but stacked a few times over.
I’d still suggest a YouTube guide. Fextra can help and all but it’s not gonna warn you or give you the exact order in which to do questioned so you don’t miss any. But up to you.
Welcome to the wacky wonderful world of FromSoft >Is there any way to keep track of side quests?
No. Not in-game, anyway. There are apps and websites that can help manually track them, though.
>Is there a list of missable weapons or spells like Milicent Prosthesis, Ansbach Crossbow, Sword of Light or Bale's Tyranny?
Yes, online. I don't have one specifically for you, but there are multiple you can find.
>Is there any way to make navigation easier?
Again, online you can find interactive maps. The map and points of interest will also stay revealed in NG+, as well as any markers you put down.
> but it often like I was thrown in a fantasy world with no guide whatsoever.
That's the point. These games are designed to make you feel that way.
Wacky sounds about right. I'm grateful for the amount of contents, but I wish the game had some accessibility setting to make navigation easier. By comparison, Sekiro was quite linear and there aren't as many NPCs, so it was nowhere near as confusing. Took me ages just to find the key to Liurnia Academy.
I have the same feelings with Elden Ring tbh. In previous games due to the linear progression it was harder to miss quests. Now if you don't find random dude sitting on a stone 200 meters away from any major path you can lock yourself out of a whole questline. Not to mention the boss triggers that just kill off quests like in the DLC.
In DS2 for example I could almost effortlessly complete most questlines without paying much attention to them. Summon dude to bossfight was basically the hardest it got back then.
Also, it an open world game; ofc it's going to be somewhat overwhelming ..
Going to finally get some time aside to beat the dlc. The questions I have though are,
Basically what the other comment has said. imo it's harder than Old Hunters on base ng, assuming you're going in solo melee. Roughly the same in difficulty on max ng+ cycle.
Get the best spirit summons (look these up) and level them up. There are more than a few dragons and deathrite birds that you're better off just summoning and getting it over with.
Unless you're checking a guide you're bound to miss a lot of stuff, especially the character quests. Don't fret too much over them.
So he's not going in solo melee if he summons
1+2: Beat the base game for the best start in it. Around 120-150 would be pretty good.
3: Whatever you like, bring in whatever. You can go back to the base game at any time.
4: Probably.
5: Collect Scadutree Fragments to increase your damage and defenses. This is how you actually get strong enough to take on the DLC. If you do not, no matter what level you are, you're gonna get ground to dust.
I bet you someone out there has beaten the dlc without the fragments. There has to be lol.
Anything you can think of, it’s been done lol. These games are challenge run heavens
Hey everyone,
I just defeated Morgott, and I’m a bit confused about what to do next. Melina mentioned burning the Erdtree, but I’m not sure if I should focus on collecting all the Great Runes first or follow her guidance right away.
I want to mend the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord, but I’m worried about missing important bosses or runes if I move forward too quickly. Should I focus on gathering the Great Runes next before progressing to the Mountaintops of the Giants? Or can I still go back for them after burning the tree?
Any help would be appreciated—thanks in advance!
You don't need all great runes, and I don't believe you can softlock yourself out of any of them, so it wouldn't be necessary. Even after the end of the game, you can go defeat any great rune boss at any point.
You don't have to, but you can. Basically, as soon as you enter Leyndell, acquiring great runes is no longer necessary. But of course, hunting down bosses is a lot of fun, so I recommend at least trying.
I’m a new player diving into Elden Ring for the first time, and as the game is now two years old, I have read the old comprehensive guide but I imagine the community has learned a lot about what works and what doesn’t. I’d love your advice on the following:
What are the absolute must-know tips for a beginner?
Whether it’s about character builds, exploring, or combat strategies, what would you tell someone just starting today?
Is there anything you wish you’d done differently if you could start fresh?
What are the biggest lessons learned in the past two years?
Have there been any revelations about mechanics, items, or strategies that aren’t immediately obvious to new players?
With the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC on the horizon, do you have any preparation tips? Is there specific gear, builds, or lore I should be aware of that might tie into this expansion?
I’m trying to approach this game with an open mind and fully enjoy the world, but I know it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Any guidance, from small quality-of-life tips to major gameplay strategies, would be massively appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Tarnished!
I am still on my first play through. Just got the game as well. Been playing ds 1 and 3. My experience is to start with something simple. And for me that is a strength build. And when things get too difficult I google on that specific problem. There is a joy in going in blind. And do not trip if an enemy is too difficult. Go somewhere else and come back later. It’s a beautiful game. Maybe the best I have ever tried. Enjoy.
I think Strength was my favorite build. Get the Giant Crusher in early game.
That’s true I just came from DS3 and so far am loving the game. The cut scenes, environment change and gameplay are all really cool. I don’t mind dying hard at all as long as I am learning something every-time. I love exploring the map, going places where I shouldn’t. Found some crazy places, hid in bushes, stabbed their backs and ran. It’s awesome.
Agree. So many surprises.
In my experience this is all you need:
Level up vigor
Have fun with your favorite build
3.Don’t spread stats unless you know what you are doing
It’s ok to miss some quests
Gather Scooby doo blessings for the DLC
Use your consumables!
Currently I’m on the storm gate giant boss and he’s giving me a hard time. I level up my strength stat to 10 to wield the long sword and changed my armor to one of the guards.
I’ll definitely increase my vigor as currently I am a two shot easy kill for anyone. Learned to dodge but finding it hard to attack sitting on the donkey.
The giant at stormgate? You can easily run past him. Or you can go south to weeping peninsula or east. Just don’t go to Caelid
> Gather Scooby doo blessings
What are these?
Fextralife was a great guide, very helpful for me. I also recommend quitting your job and leaving your wife and child. Commit to ER.
The grind is real! Found a dragon this early in game, turned out I could just run away from it. Coz I can’t even kill a small rat for now.
Bro I found this WiKi
Imo it’s best to experience this game blind from the start. The discovery just adds so much to it. The only thing I would think is worth looking up are some of the side quest as they are easy to miss and have cool gear and weapons/spells but even then I would try them out before looking it up. Don’t be afraid to try out different things. You can respec at some point like mid game. On a second run through or after you beat the game I would then look up a guide to find everything you might have missed. And also to add on to my point about my side quest, it’s no big deal if you miss them. I have 200+ hours in the game and have not done them all. There is just a ton to explore and find. I feel like a comprehensive guide would take a lot of the fun out of it.
So I finished Elden Ring at level 150 after defeating every boss in the game and thought I'd be able to pick up the dlc and run through it no problem but I can't even get through the first boss. Like I'm struggling the same as I did when I played Elden Ring the first time. How are people making it easier on themselves besides just getting gud? Would love some advice.
When you say first boss are you talking about the knight or the obvious big boss with a cutscene (trying to not spoiler)
If it's the knight, you really have to focus on his attacks and decide if you play safe and punish the crossbow or go hard and get rekt from his sword over and over like me.
If it's the other, good luck, he's really hard or medium depending on build and weapon.
Go get the Scadutree fragments. They are the DLC's power progression system, and the bosses are scaled to them. If you can't find any, you can look up a guide online.
It's worth mentioning that you can get scadutree lvl 14 without killing any bosses
You can beat the game at like 8-9 Scadu level.
Do some people do the DLC withour them? :o
You can't, you'd deal so little damage that even a field boss would take an hour to beat at max level
I started the DLC this week after creating a new character, which took me 80 hours just to get to it. First impressions are that this is practically Elden Ring II, and has some of the best areas and exploration that from have created.
The DLC has a unique levelling system for both summons and yourself. It's genious as it gives that constant progression feeling even with a high level character, and doesn't spoil the main game if you've not finished it.
Don't try attacking the giant flame golem unless you know what you're doing (I don't).
The first gaol optional mini boss in the start area is an arsehole. My build is a light blue dancer doll/dagger/buckler and he is a bitch for me.
Scadutree Fragments are your best friend. Welcome to the best DLC ever mate
Make sure you’re obtaining scadutree fragments so you can level up your scadutree blessing at sites of grace. It increases your damage dealt and decreases your damage taken so it’s essential for keeping up with the increased damage and hp of the dlc enemies.
So I’ve already been through the DLC once, but I’m somehow just as lost on my second run. I must have forgotten how confusing and disorienting the map can be - especially when it’s dark 90% of the time.
So far, I’ve beaten Rellana and the Divine Beast, and I’ve explored a bunch of side areas and catacombs, like the Cerulean Coast, Prospect Town, and Fog Rift Catacombs, before making my way into Scadu Altus.
The problem is, I can’t seem to figure out where I should be going. Instead of progressing through bosses or the main path, I keep wandering off into entirely new areas.
Don’t get me wrong — I love the exploration. That’s always been part of the magic of these games. But in SoTE, with the Scadutree Fragment mechanic, it can feel really punishing to stumble into a zone when you’re underleveled.
I found a progression map on the Elden Ring subreddit, but honestly, it’s almost as confusing as the game itself and hasn’t helped much.
Any tips or pointers would be appreciated. I’m just looking for a little structure in all the chaos.
As long as you get to Scadutree level 12, you’ll be getting the vast majority of the defense and attack increase. The levels after increase these values, but at a much smaller rate (think logarithmic plot). I’d recommend going to the Shadow Keep next.
I’m at level 9 at the moment as I tried to grab as many fragments as possible, just need to find some others as I’ve picked up all the ones in Scadu Altus.
I always just chase scaudtree fragments initially. Get as many as I can without fighting real bosses, then you are ready to take on anything you come across.
Here’s how to explore the dlc: go to Ensis Castle Front site of grace, pick a random direction, you’re in a secret location
This is surprising accurate, that’s how I found the Cerulean Coast.
The verticality of the map sounds cool at first but that shit hides so many paths, while half the higher areas aren't even accessible
I have a document that has all the quest steps in order that I follow to ensure that I don't miss anything on my 100% collection playthroughs. I just mark off tasks as I complete them. I know the image will be useless since the text is too small to read, but this is the doc with the entire SoTE questline
(Full credit to original file makers, I did not make the original or SoTE lists, I only edited them slightly to suit my needs)
Not all heroes wear capes!!! Legend status obtained!!!
Yo it would be a blessing if you could send me the main game one
Send link
Are you willing to share a link to the file? This could be very useful!
I recently played through elden ring for the first time after getting into it through nightreign, and I’ve enjoyed fighting all the bosses at their recommended level n I don’t want to end up overleveled going into SOTE. Should I go into the DLC in basic NG with my Elden lord title or is it a better experience to go into it with the slight ng+ difficulty bump to balance out the fact I’m over level 150. Ignore stats I’m going to renalla before starting again lol.
The DLC has a separate scaling mechanic for damage and defense, so level matters truthfully a lot less. With the build you have, you'll be fine. I'd actually recommend against going into the DLC on NG+ considering you'll just be making it harder for no reason.
This. I played SotE on NG+ and NG and NG was considerably easier, TBH. Those were on play throughs 4 and 5 so I had overcome the early skill issue. I will say, I explored almost the entire map the second time around in the DLC before going into the mid and late game bosses, but even the comparably leveled bosses were quite different on the difficulty scale.
NG+3 was a total bitch but is it true that bosses will still 2 shot me on a fresh DLC play through? Im about to start it soon.
Level 185.
So true. I went into the DLC at NG4 and it was tough.
Go into the DLC before NG+ trust me. It's scaled differently so it won't be too easy and you won't have to play through a second NG+ if you want to get multiple of one item in the DLC
At very least, if you started NG+, you'd have to clear 60% of the game again in order to access the DLC. I'd recommend heading into it in NG.
After. The. DLC
Don't worry about overleveling. When the DLC came out we have lots of folks getting into SOTE with LVL200+ build and still getting two shot. The Scadutree blessing system will give you a unique scaling for damage and defense so what matters is really the blessing level instead of just a few soul levels.
I finally just got to the point in Elden Ring where I can play Shadow of the Erdtree. I’ve been grinding for about 60+ hours in preparation for this moment. Any advice for the DLC?
Levels don't matter in the DLC.
What matters are Scadutree fragments, collectibles found scattered across the map and dropped by certain enemies. You can use them to level up your Scadutree blessing at sites of grace. What this does is basically increase your damage output and also makes you take less damage from enemies.
Revered Spirit Ashes are similar but they're used to strengthen Torrent and Spirit Ashes instead.
Okay thanks! Where can I find scadutree fragments? Are there a lot of them or only like ten?
There are a few. It's a bit like collecting seeds. There are fixed places where you can find 1 (you will notice pretty soon into the dlc) there's 1 type of mob that gives you one (one of those is a boss)
Also I'd advise to explore before running to the big castle in the middle. Iirc going there breaks some quests or at least puts them on hold.
Also I advise to try the dlc weapons. I know it's hard to switch from the few your used to in the main game but even weapons where you think they're stupid might surprise you.
Also have fun.
Backhand blade and Milady are super satisfying armaments.
Okay! I’ll keep an eye out for them! I’ve been enjoying the DLC so far I’m only like 30 minutes in though but it’s a lot of fun!
As soon as you start the DLC, go collect a few Scadutree Fragments. There at least three you can grab from the open world before you enter into any dungeons. Good luck, Tarnished.
I started playing a year ago and beat it. Since then I wanted the DLC but haven't been able to until now. I'm kinda nervous though, can I have some tips to make it more manageable?
Get as many scadutree fragments as quickly as you can, they modify both damage done and damage taken. The dlc drops a shitload of runes, use them to get vig up to 60. I also found a LOT of value in getting my endurance wayy higher than I normally would. Use whatever weapons, skills, or summons you want. They are a part of the game. Dont let anyone give you shit for using anything.
I second this. Use all tools you have. The DLC is far more punishing than the base game and you will need every advantage you can get.
What's the recommended minimum level to enter the DLC? I have finished NG and am not sure if I should play NG+ and how many NG+ or just go DLC right away... both seem fun, but fromsoft DLC is usually pretty brutal
I owe 99% of my progress in Elden Ring to guides, so I'm not exactly a stranger to them😭. Thanks for the help though, it's appreciated
If you go to the main castle, even close to it, it closes some quests. Kinda bad design.
Also, if you fight Bale without NPC Igon you failed
I messed up pretty much every NPC questline on my 1st DLC run and it made >!Leda's allies so much harder, she even had Hornsent on her side!!<
Yeah, I hate that about Elden Ring. One of my biggest critiques is that its open world, open exploration but every quest has to be done in a specific order or you lock yourself out for the whole playthrough. To be fair it is their first actual open world game so they probably aren’t use to writing quests the way witcher 3 or even skyrim did.
Can you provide an exemple. Because it's the only game I've played where reaching the final area doesn't lock the majority of quests and even crazier some quests can get completed after defeating godfrey(aka the boss before the last boss)
There will be places you think you can reach when you first see it but you'll actually get there later through other means. Not every area you see can be easily reached.
That really tripped me up in the main game. Lots of things that look close, but need a full quest line to get to. I'll keep that in mind, thanks!
Don’t ever let some Waifu body pillow having ass man-child tell you how to play YOUR game. Those are just the tryhards that think beating a boss without a summons somehow makes their dick bigger. And I’ll bet dollars to donuts most of them use summons, but in order to have some type of soulsborne god complex they pretend they don’t and make others feel bad for using them. I swear the souls community is probably the biggest heap of tryhard trash of all the gaming communities. Have fun. That’s the most important thing. But yes the DLC is far more punishing and more than likely you’re going to need those summons.
Don't ever let people tell you not to use certain mechanics or items the game offers you. It's a single player game. Use everything you need to win, unless you want the extra challenge.
