TL;DR
Dodging Mechanics
Understanding the dodge mechanics is crucial in Elden Ring. The dodge action triggers when you release the button, not when you press it, which can affect your timing significantly [1:1]. Dodging is more about using invincibility frames rather than just avoiding attacks. You can dodge into attacks if timed correctly, leveraging these frames for survival during intense boss battles.
Exploration and Preparation
Exploring the world thoroughly and leveling up is essential before tackling difficult bosses. Engaging with regular enemies helps practice dodging and attacking, gradually improving your skills [1:2]. Additionally, upgrading your weapons and focusing on key stats like vigor and endurance can provide a solid foundation for boss fights
[1:5].
Utilizing Scadutree Fragments
In the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Scadutree fragments are vital for progression. These fragments enhance your damage dealt and reduce damage taken, making them essential for keeping pace with the increased difficulty of DLC bosses [2:2]
[2:3]. Collecting these fragments should be a priority as they are integral to the DLC's power system.
Build and Equipment Adjustments
Adjusting your build and equipment can make a significant difference in boss encounters. For instance, increasing vigor to around 60 can improve survivability [3:2]. Using shields or specific talismans can also be beneficial, depending on the boss's attack patterns
[3:1]
[3:3]. Experimenting with different weapon types and builds can help find what works best against particular bosses.
Boss-Specific Strategies
Each boss may require unique strategies. Staying close to bosses to avoid certain attacks, blocking AOEs, and using audio cues for timing can be effective [5:1]. In phase-based fights, adapting your strategy between phases—such as ramping up fire resistance or using throwable items—can be crucial
[5].
By combining these strategies and continuously adapting to each boss's mechanics, players can progressively overcome the challenges presented in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
Hi everyone,
I’ve always been fascinated by Soulslike games, but I only started exploring the genre when Elden Ring was released. The open world combined with the Soulslike formula really caught my attention, and I thought, “Alright, it’s finally my turn—no more excuses.”
From the beginning, I found the game incredibly challenging. I’ve managed to defeat most regular enemies, but when it comes to bosses, I really struggle. I’m wondering—do I just need more practice? Is the key to simply keep trying over and over until it clicks?
Sometimes I feel like I’m missing some kind of logic or strategy in the game. Any advice or insight would be really appreciated!
Bro if you're finding it really hard, just explore the world and touch grace where you can find. Then whoever you think you can beat, attack them and practice dodging and attacking with them.
The world is very beautiful, you'll enjoy exploring.
Then slowly you'll start to learn and be good.
Just know I was just like you. This was my post here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/1k6gdzh/im_going_crazy_how_tf_should_i_improve_i_get/
This was is also my post after like a week, bro just practice and once you start to improve, you'll love this game so much:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/1kct73i/finally_defeated_morgott_the_omen_king_after_2/
You were right! Using the logic that I found in the comments I finally started to better understand the game. Now need to beat Margin, I always arrive that he has a little bit of health and then I fucked up.
Awesome bro! Also you can ask me if you have any question while playing. We're on this journey together to become the elden lord.
I hated this game in the few days of playing it and now it's one of the best game I ever played.
Sometimes you may need to switch up what weapons you are using, I’ll go between a bleed/dex build and a strength build, I used strength for pretty much the whole dlc. If you find things are too hard, part of the souls games experience is grinding for levels. Also look up the bloodhounds fang, that weapon carries my first playthrough to the very end of the game.
my dumbass not changing my build from godrick to goldfrey cuz all i know is greatstar go bonk
What do you play on? I haven’t been on in nearly a year since SoTE came out but I can try to help if you need it sometime
Specify please. What level are you? Where have you been exploring? What bosses did you try?
Level 31 :D And I tried a boss at the end of a castle tunnel. He just defeated me several times lol
I assume you mean Margit? At the entrance to stormveil castle? He's the first real milestone and really not easy if you're new to the game.
Have you been all the way to the south of limgrave to weeping peninsula? That's the area to go bevore stormveil castle.
Level up vigor. And maybe a little bit of endurance. Damage stats like strength or dex follow later.
Upgrade your weapon via smithing stones. Focus on one or two weapons in the beginning. Smithing stones are valuable but become more accessible later. Increase of damage comes primarily through weapon upgrades in the early stages of the game.
Keep your equipload on medium. You will otherwise do fatrolls which must be avoided by all means!
Don't equip soreseals as talisman. The increase of stats is not worth the decrease of damage negation. At least not for beginners.
And I'd like to add: getting defeated several times is part of the game. You will learn what you did wrong and will eventually git gud ;)
Ok guys you're supporting me a lot! Thank you so muchhhh!! Following your advice I'm trying again, level 31 !!!
The two things that totally changed the game for me were learning how the dodge actually works and no longer fat rolling.
Dodge - the dodge only triggers when you release the button, not when you press it. Seems small but that tiny timing difference can really change a battle. Also dodging in this game isn’t about avoiding an attack - it’s about invincibility frames. Basically you can dodge any direction you want as long as the invincibility frames line up with the hit timing. You can literally dodge into the attack and be fine.
On that note is where fat rolling comes in - I didn’t know this when I started a couple of weeks ago, but fat rolling is basically when you are wearing a “heavy load”. If it says that, you’re fat rolling. Aim for “medium” or “light” load. If you don’t want to remove some armor or weapons, you’ll need to level up your endurance to be able to carry more.
The reason that matters is because each type of load affects how many frames of invincibility you have while dodging. A heavy load has the least about of invincibility time by a notable amount, so fat rolling can literally make or break a fight.
This is a dodge game, not a block game. Master the dodge and you’ll find things a lot easier.
Also, consider having a ranged and a close range option. I know a lot of people go all in, but for the way I play (a non soulslike person who enjoys fast combat), I need both.
Weapons that build status effects make a big difference too - I’ve taken on things I had no business fighting because I was using Reduvia, a blood loss dagger with a ranged ability and a fast melee combo. Every hit builds up the status effect and once it’s full, the enemy takes a HUGE chunk of damage.
So I finished Elden Ring at level 150 after defeating every boss in the game and thought I'd be able to pick up the dlc and run through it no problem but I can't even get through the first boss. Like I'm struggling the same as I did when I played Elden Ring the first time. How are people making it easier on themselves besides just getting gud? Would love some advice.
Make sure you’re obtaining scadutree fragments so you can level up your scadutree blessing at sites of grace. It increases your damage dealt and decreases your damage taken so it’s essential for keeping up with the increased damage and hp of the dlc enemies.
Go get the Scadutree fragments. They are the DLC's power progression system, and the bosses are scaled to them. If you can't find any, you can look up a guide online.
It's worth mentioning that you can get scadutree lvl 14 without killing any bosses
You can beat the game at like 8-9 Scadu level.
Do some people do the DLC withour them? :o
You can't, you'd deal so little damage that even a field boss would take an hour to beat at max level
I started the DLC this week after creating a new character, which took me 80 hours just to get to it. First impressions are that this is practically Elden Ring II, and has some of the best areas and exploration that from have created.
The DLC has a unique levelling system for both summons and yourself. It's genious as it gives that constant progression feeling even with a high level character, and doesn't spoil the main game if you've not finished it.
Don't try attacking the giant flame golem unless you know what you're doing (I don't).
The first gaol optional mini boss in the start area is an arsehole. My build is a light blue dancer doll/dagger/buckler and he is a bitch for me.
Scadutree Fragments are your best friend. Welcome to the best DLC ever mate
When you say first boss are you talking about the knight or the obvious big boss with a cutscene (trying to not spoiler)
If it's the knight, you really have to focus on his attacks and decide if you play safe and punish the crossbow or go hard and get rekt from his sword over and over like me.
If it's the other, good luck, he's really hard or medium depending on build and weapon.
As the title suggests, I've been struggling with the Erdtree final boss for a couple of weeks now. This is my first souls game and I thought everything was managable up until now. Was curious if anyone had any advice/constructive criticism on my set up:
Rivers of Blood+10. Blood Nagakiba+25
Full Crucible Armor Set
Talismas:
I'm a bleed build Samurai. My stats are:
VIG 45 Mind 11 END 40 STR 25 DEX 70 INT 9 F 8 ARC 40
45 Vigor is a glaring issue. Should be at 60.
Take points out of other stats to put into Vigor. Namely Strength and Endurance.
Dragoncrest Shield is the weaker version of Dragoncrest Greatshield- replace with this.
Crimson Amber Medallion +3 exists, can replace with this. Or use something else like Crimson Seed +1 for stronger healing flasks (won't need to waste an extra flask getting closer to full health from critically low)
Took your recommendations and managed to beat them, thanks dude!
Re-spec and use a shield. Or just get good.
Summon the troll and use heal from afar. He can solo radahn for you
Personally, I find my PCR loadout to be fun as hell and a very viable way to beat him.
Miseriecorde w/ bleed on right hand
Messmer soldier shield on left hand with Carian Retaliation
Dragoncrest greatshield talisman
Golden braid
Dagger talisman
Double headed turtle talisman
With this loadout I learned to parry him and kill him with critical hits. Holy hell it’s fun
What do you think is the best way to beat boss fights in elden ring....
Stay right near their ass crack so that most of their attacks go over your head. Being short has it's perks!
Carefully, single attacks, no panic rolls, and don’t heal immediately after being hit unless you’re safe. Usually being all up in their personal space at all times too.
Getting their hp to 0
Obviously XD
Honestly, high.
Night comet and mimic tear with heavy armor. Don’t need to dodge when you can get out five comets before they turn toward you
I was struggling hard, almost quit the game over him. This made the difference in the end:
- ramping up fire resistance with a necklace, a ring and the Executioner's set found in >!the light Crevice behind an illusionary wall!<
- staying absolutely close to him at all times in phase 2, dodging a lot/trying to always get behind him for his flame thrower attacks (also coming with the consequence that he never did his devastating stab attack anymore)
- blocking all Godfrey like AOEs during phase 1 and phase 2
- dodging not parrying/blocking his projectiles
Used a Greatsword and all his weapon swings I tried to parry and punish with a Swift Attack followed by an uncharged Mortal Blow when possible (rather tedious and time consuming, but I usually have a defensive playstyle and don't mind when it takes longer). He was really hard for me, I'm happy now that I didn't quit.
The water throwables help too.
I got him the other night. And honestly it didn't take too many tries..maybe like 10 or so.. which isn't too bad
At first he was going crazy on me..but then I picked up on a few things that made it a ton easier.
PHASE 1
If you brink guard his combo you can stun him without actually fatiguing him yet..it's even better than fatiguing him and usually leads up to one..cuz he gets into a stunlock phase with each hit.
The delayed boot stamp, don't watch the boot..listen for the audio queue. He does a mini shout/roar right before it happens and it's much easier to time it like that than a visual queue.
PHASE 2
When he start flame spinning rotate left, clockwise, around him cuz that's the direction the flames come down and you'll have less to dodge through.
When he grapples to get away from you to fie, rush him rush him rush him. And get used to dodging his shots as if you're right on top of him. The idea is to get at least 1-2 swings on him..this will force him out of his firing phase. Otherwise if you keep your distance and dodge .. instead of having to dodge only 1-2 shots..you'll end up having to dodge 4-5-6-7-8 shots sometimes..it gets ridiculous.
Now having fire resistance is handy..but even just like 1 ring or 1 necklace with 150 fire resistance, is enough..just make sure you have some fire cleansing potions..Those are wayy more important than resistance IMO.
Whoever is reading,If you follow this and what OP says, you should have him down to phase 2 with maybe taking 1 hit at most..all your potions..then you just need to follow him when he grapples so he does less shots..and get good at dodging a few large slams..but even with missing those your potions should save you.
Whatever you do, don't let him go far and stay far..cuz he will give you hellfire
Hello people of Reddit, I fell in love with the FromSoft games when my friend introduced me to Dark Souls 3 when I was 18 (now 25) from that point on I played every other FromSoft release except for Sekiro. I typically don’t find any of the games hard, there are some bosses I struggle with but, I’d say I’ve never fought a boss more than 15-20 times. HOWEVER, the final boss of the shadow of the erdtree DLC is by far the most rage inducing I’ve ever encountered. For context… I’ve respecced my LVL 325 character over 10 times to find a sweet spot and nothing has worked.
I have played the DLC since release and I play a whopping 4-6 hours a day. Now here’s the best part, I finished EVERYTHING in the DLC the third day after release. Which means I have been fighting the final boss for nearly a month now for 4-6 hours a day. I’ve tried the popular shield cheese build with the antspur rapier and still it does not work for me. Now everyday when I get on to play Elden Ring I’m in an instant state of depression.
I’m on the verge of tears right now even writing this post because I’ve never felt so helpless with a FromSoft boss. I know for a fact I have fought the final boss AT LEAST 210 times because I had 210 rune arcs saved up from all my runs through the base game. I’ve seen a lot of people say they have given up on the final boss and “quit playing”. But I don’t want to cheat myself out of the experience of completing the game.
So my final point I’m trying to make is… what should I do? What can I do? If there are any recommendations for this boss fight that made it easier for anyone, please help me by giving me your advice.
UPDATE: I finally beat him, thank you all for the advice!!! Elden Ring is the greatest video game of all time.
I'm surprised the ol' Antspur Greatshield setup didn't work for you, that's what got me through my first playthrough of the DLC. Still, despite the stress this is causing you, I at least commend your tenacity in hanging on.
I'll run you through a few things off my head. I don't know what you've done so far, so sorry if some of these are repetition:
Have you messed with the Deflection Hardtear at all? It's nifty, and lets you perfect guard attacks in order to reduce stamina costs, chip damage, and retaliate with an improved guard counter if you attack. I started using it the moment I found it, and while it took me a long time to understand it, I eventually fell in love with it for block styles.
Resistances. Naturally, buffs reduce damage taken, but the Consort fight is so long that your buffs will run out. Still, I'm a big fan of Old Lord's talisman, making Lord's Divine Fortification last closer to 90 seconds. The catch is that there's almost no time to rebuff during this fight, I would rebuff just Lord's Divine during the phase transition, which usually meant I got smacked by the next attack, which was usually the big sky beams... but, you know, cut by 65% more than usual, and that's if I didn't avoid the attack completely with...
Vow of the Indomitable. I was running a fat roll build, so rolling was often a desperate last measure, and while it's true that fat rolls could still avoid the Bloodflame swings (that explosion happens from behind me, so can't be blocked -- in hindsight, I could have free-aimed to block it?), Vow had a longer immunity duration than fat rolls and recovered more quickly and kept me in place to retaliate with pokes. The other attack Vow works well on are the meteors; had no idea how to fat roll those and I'm not protected vs. magic, so they chipped too hard, but Vow avoids them all and gives a good attack window if I'm underneath. Raptor of the Mists is also one of my favorites for similar reasons, though for Consort, I didn't really want to be jumping up.
Rot Grease, including Drawstring, can also help to ensure a proc. I didn't use it because, well, my particular stat distribution involved a Flame Art Antspur, but that can work too. I did use Rot Grease at multiple points during the DLC, I just don't think I did it for Consort.
While my style was mostly focused on perfect guards and guard counters when I learned the safety windows to use them, I have to admit I resorted to good ol' stupid shield pokes when I had the stamina to spare.
Tried most of that besides the Old Lord talisman and the rot grease. The old lord talisman does sound like a great idea because I typically use Golden Vow and Flame and they run out by the halfway point of second phase. I feel like anytime I try to rot him it works really well for first phase and then rotting him for second phase I can NEVER proc it so I gave up on the rot builds.
Yeah, for bosses like Consort and Messmer, I ended up having to... 'abreviate' my buffs. Protection spells like Lord's Divine or Flame Protect Me get reapplied during phase transitions, Golden Vow and Blessing of the Erdtree do not. I'll bite a turtle neck once in awhile if for whatever crazy reason there's a lull in the fight, but the actual cast time of buffs is relevant to me (still, I'm not going to waste time sprinting towards a boss who's about to jump in anyways).
Rot does work, but it demands a good bit of commitment. I stuck with it when it wasn't proccing because I had to know whether he was simply immune to rot during second phase or whether I just wasn't hitting often enough to proc it, and when I realized it could proc, I did everything I could to try to get little shield pokes in just so the meter would stay up -- on one attempt, it just worked, I was aggressive enough, got a knockdown through guard counters, the rot stuck, and I was able to get 'em down in a couple attempts after that. I suppose you could try backup rot pots, but that's usually my turtle neck/boiled crab time, and long windows are Lord's Divine rebuff windows.
Most options of fighting are available for all builds, so you can find a combination of them to use
Damage buffs
Low requirement Defense buff / food
Parry
Deflecting Crystal Tear
Blocking (even just a medium shield for one hit)
Counter
There are people who did it by face tanking (no shield, no roll) in NG+7, while that's a little extreme, half of that preparation can surely make dodging / parrying / deflecting lot easier
I’ve tried all of those besides parrying, I’ve never been very consistent with parrying. Only boss I’ve ever been able to parry with ease was Pontiff Sullivan from DS3. That’s because his swings are so heavily telegraphed. Radahn in his second phase it is a NIGHTMARE trying to see his swords with all of Miquellas hair in the way. Little dude needs a pony tail or something.
I’ve tried all of those besides parrying
Don't take this as offense, but no, you haven't
https://youtu.be/ULhI_OcUpDw?feature=shared
The weapon is not required, just use whatever does good Damage with your build against the boss
With a great shield / spirit ash, it can be easier / requires fewer buffs
You should try parrying, it will at least be something different to play with, but if it works you shut down many long combos while getting a free hit with each parry.
Also just take a break.
Somebody get miquella a scrunchie please!
I know how you feel. The final boss took me 187 attempts, more than all the other major bosses in the DLC combined. It was really discouraging and I couldn’t understand what was wrong with me. I finally got him with a bleed build. I didn’t even feel good about it when it was over, just relieved.
There are way more qualified people on here that can give you advice. I just wanted to say that I know what you’re feeling. Just hang in there.
For the attempt that worked for me, I used mimic and backhand blades not really optimal at all but it worked for me.
I'm a bit surprised you're struggling both being high level and also trying the shield and spear strat, but sometimes bosses really just make you struggle while others breeze through.
A really nice ash of war, and the one I used was raptors of the mist. For the big holy attack he does at the start of the 2nd phase, you can run right up to him and do the AOW to dodge the attack while also getting a hit in. Can give that a go and see if that helps dodge that attack.
100% real, even for how hard people said Malenia was I beat her pretty swiftly because she has flaws (easily staggered and low poise, weak to bleed) I just feel like with Radahn he has no flaws.
You made it to the second phase?
Elden Ring offers a slew of options to beat bosses. Are people taking advantage of them?
as a pure caster build summoning spirits is a must lmao. otherwise bosses stick to you and dont let you cast a shit. but i like how they balanced things out because summoning a strong spirit like olleg eats up your fp flask which you need to deal damage
It smell like b*tch in here.
This is a joke btw. Please dont get mad at me
Nah you’re right
Me and mimic ash, so me and me I guess ?
Dingleberries
I beat boss then I put my summon sign down if I want to farm some runes 10k per clear ?
Keep hitting him until his HP is zero, while not getting hit and keeping your red bar as full as possible. /s
OK, jokes aside, either try to learn his moveset to get better at fighting him, cheese him with poison mist, or go somewhere else until you leveled up some more.
Not sure what your current build is, but is there anything you struggle with in particular?
My build is not complicated, I hit hard and I retreat until the enemy dies, but it's above all an attack that I can't dodge, it's lightning.
Well, regarding the lightning there are only a few things you can do:
Last of all, try to get from a "trying to kill him" to "trying to learn" mindset. Do some attempts with no expectation of actually killing him, just focus on staying alive and observing his attacks and patterns. Death is part of the learning experience, not failure.
I completed him in my RL1 playthrough so I’ll try and give some tips! I’m not sure what your specific build is so feel free to pick and choose:
When opening up the fight, the horse will rear up, you can get a fully charged R2 in while he’s doing it. If you can learn the timings of the opening(he usually does the same 3 attacks as long as you remain melee) then you can essentially get 2 more CR2s in back to back(try to get behind him). Depending on your weapon, this will probably break his poise.
Everytime the horse rears up, try to get near his butt and beat him up.
Whenever the horse spams fireball, I like to run towards him in kind of a spiral so I can keep a good eye on the fireball
In phase 2, the attack I struggled with the most was the single lightning attack, you can dodge this by watching his hand and the MOMENT you see his hand like “pump down” in kind of a recoil fashion, dodge.
In phase 2 he has a lot of aoe attacks with his weapon, just make sure to stay mindful and if possible stay on his butt closer to the shield side, but still watch out for shield because it HURTS.
You can do this!
Nothing is undodge-able. However if it makes you feel any better I have attempted this guy and another one later so many times that I can beat them in my sleep now. Just something to look forward to.
For the lightning: when he raises his shield, wait, then roll forward when he raises it up. With this, you can manage to dodge like 90% of them (yep, I still dont understand the 100% dodge method for this one).
I beat him with a colossal weapon. A couple of hits and he breaks his stance. Giving that guy space and he'll annoy you with lighting and fire
The fireball dodge timing is pretty easy - roll through it towards him. You can often get a hit on his front side just from going through his fireball spam.
The lightning dodge timing is harder but still consistent with a little practice. Learning that delay will make the fight a lot easier.
His jump attack is an easy dodge and is usually punishable. If playing safe, I would try to roll so that I ended up tight behind him, and just take one hit and moved back out to midrange.
Staying at midrange will mean mostly just dealing with those two ranged attacks & the jump. Later in the fight you’ll have to roll through a lightning wave after his ground smash, it’s not too hard though.
Prioritise learning the fireball & lightning dodges, it’s a much more manageable fight from there.
I found that when he shoots the lightning in the air get as close to him as possible or just run right into him when the lightning strikes and he just absorbs it. No chance of it hitting you
im surprised this is not the top comment. cliff parry is a very consistent speedrun strat for this boss.
Well yeah, but you need to learn how to parry, and it's not trivial.
Short answer: get good
Long answer: summons, player summons, he's weaker to magic, holy, pierce, strike and bonks.
Do a death run, where you know your going to die, instead of trying to beat him focus on learning his attacks.
As a new player, I've beaten 5 bosses so far. It took several tries with some of them (Tree Sentinel and Night Calvalry) because I fought them early, but they all went well. How are later bosses? As a long-time Dark Souls player, I know the brutal nature of boss fights in the third game, but I'm wondering if Elden Ring would be just like that or worse.
General consensus is that the end game bosses in Elden Ring are significantly harder than even Friede or Nameless King, though of course it's all subjective and personal
Then how do they compare with Demon Prince, Midir, and Gael? These were the toughest bosses to me. Nameless King and Sister Friede weren't that bad at all.
Well, this speaks to my earlier point, because the general consensus is that NK and Friede are harder than those three, even though your personal experience is that they're easier. So, the general consensus is that late game Elden Ring bosses are significantly more difficult than late game Dark Souls 3 bosses, but your personal experience might not match up with the general consensus.
In my opinion, the 3 “main” bosses leading up to the final one are some of the best in the whole series!
There are some cavalry bosses very similar to those two throughout Elden Ring (including some rematches!)
Can you clarify what you mean by "how are they" / "like that" / "worse"?
Are you just asking about people's overall experience with the difficulty?
People's overall experience
I enjoyed them, overall!
It's all opinion. Some bosses later are the worst things of their lives. Those same bosses are some other fan favourites. You have the series experience. Keep playing and see what's up.
I'm new to the game but just encountered the first big boss. Keep getting my butt handed to me. Any suggestions for handling bosses? Dodging as much as I'm able but feel like I'm putting out very little damage and die pretty quickly.
Boss fights were seriously affecting my enjoyment of the game so I did something I almost never do…I turned down the difficulty for them.
Seriously, the boss fights were at complete odds with what was making the game special to me as a puzzle exploration game; once I changed the dynamic difficulty, the game as a whole was much better. Sure, I’d try at normal difficulty for 5-10-15 times even but after awhile, nope!
If you have any dynamite that helped me a lot since it’s a small arena and it’s easy to hit with it.
If worse comes to worse, just go to the options menu and fiddle around with the difficulty. For instance you can turn off stamina loss I believe, allowing you to roll and shield more.
Have you checked the manual? Specifically pages >!18 and 19!<?
I would say spend the first few attempts looking at their attack patterns, each boss has a particular set of attacks that you can figure out how to best react to.
Also it's bit counterintuitive (as someone who doesn't play many games with difficult combat) but my partner showed me that dodging TOWARDS the boss was very often helpful instead of trying to dodge side to side; they miss you and you end up close enough to hit them and some of them can't hit you well when you're under their feet.
