Spicy Foods
Spicy foods are frequently mentioned as effective in clearing nasal passages. Ingredients like chili peppers contain capsaicin, which can help ease congestion by causing the nose to run and flushing out mucus [1],
[5:1]. Some people even make spicy foods like beef jerky with Carolina Reapers specifically for this purpose during allergy and flu season
[5:2].
Anti-Inflammatory Foods
An anti-inflammatory diet is suggested to have positive impacts on sinus inflammation and infections [2:1]. Foods like ginger and turmeric are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce sinus inflammation
[1]. Chia seeds, when added to smoothies, are also highlighted as a go-to anti-inflammatory food during allergy seasons
[2:4].
Herbs and Teas
Certain herbs and teas can be beneficial for sinus health. Mullein leaf tea is noted for its ability to clear mucus from the lungs and throat [4:1]. Steam inhalation with thyme, eucalyptus, or peppermint can also help clear sinuses
[4:3]. Masala chai made with fresh spices is another remedy that boosts immunity and helps alleviate allergy symptoms
[4:5].
Fermented Foods
Fermented foods like kimchi might also support sinus health. There are specific bacteria isolated from kimchi that are used for addressing sinus problems [1:1]. Local raw honey is another fermented product that is soothing, antimicrobial, and supports the body against allergens
[4:1].
Hydration and Other Remedies
Staying hydrated with warm water or herbal teas helps keep mucus thin and moving [4:1]. Additionally, sinus massage and neti pots are non-food remedies that can encourage drainage and provide relief from blocked sinuses
[4:2],
[4:4].
Overall, incorporating these foods and practices into your routine may help manage sinus issues more naturally. However, it's important to remember that individual responses can vary, and consulting with a healthcare professional is advisable for persistent sinus problems.
They always say that our physical health is 20% in the gym and 80% of what we eat. Could our sinus health could be the same? Possibly.
Here are a few foods that can support on his health: 🎉Spicy foods, like chili peppers, can help clear nasal passages and ease congestion. 🎉Ginger and turmeric, known for their potent anti-inflammatory properties, may help reduce sinus inflammation. 🎉Leafy greens and vegetables are rich in vitamins and minerals that support immune function. 🎉Citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruits, are high in vitamin C, which aids in fighting infections.
Adding these foods to your diet can complement other sinus treatments, such as staying hydrated, using a humidifier, and practicing nasal irrigation.
Sinus issues can be frustrating, but adjusting your diet is an effective way to alleviate discomfort. Avoiding dairy, refined sugars, and gluten can help reduce inflammation, decrease mucus production, and bolster your immune system’s ability to fight off infections. A nutrient-rich, balanced diet can not only improve your sinus health but also enhance your overall well-being. If you’re dealing with sinus problems, consider dietary changes and observe how they impact your symptoms—you might notice a surprising improvement. However, chronic sinus issues may indicate a more serious underlying problem that could require a procedure like balloon sinuplasty, after which you might no longer need to avoid certain foods as your sinus health improves.
I think you’re forgetting genetics and environment. Supplements aren’t going to change those things.
Absolutely. Food is just one piece of the Airway Puzzle. And that’s why I posed the question about food and is it just one possibility? Of course not. Our functional airway is so complex.
You said physical health is 80% what we eat, 20% gym.
Don’t forget kimchi! You can buy a bacteria isolated for kimchi specifically for sinus problems: https://lantohealth.com
That’s a great addition. Thank you for chiming in.
Any foods, drinks or anything else you can take or do (besides walking or jogging) that will open your nasal passages so it's easier to clear your nose?
Think that's somewhat a personal thing, but I have a "sinus blaster" spray from my local health food store that is mostly horseradish extract. Wasabi from my sushi does it too.
anti-inflammatory diet and steam
Anti inflammatory foods have really helped me, chia seeds in a smoothie are now my go to this spring/summer!
Allermi
There is some evidence that an nti inflammatory diet has positive impacts on sinus inflammation and infection. Here’s one study on it but there are several. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26637564/
For me cloves is working wonders.
What foods are you avoiding? Ginger helps me. I bought the fresh root and I put it in fruit/veg smoothies.
I think sugar for me personally is a big one. If I have some dessert after dinner, I'll get ready for bed with my nose plugged up and in pain
Interesting. What if you have sugar earlier in the day?
Dairy, wheat
Have you tried an anti-inflammatory diet? Another great one is the omega-3 diet. There is overlap between these two.
I’m always getting colds and blocked sinuses and want to stop relying on medication as much. Any advice on a natural remedy to help a blocked nose and mucus in throat?
Sinus massage can help encourage drainage - there are some great videos on YouTube to guide you.
Have you tried steaming with eucalyptus or peppermint oil? That can help clear things up. Warm drinks, garlic, and turmeric may also ease mucus. And don’t forget to stay hydrated and use a humidifier if the air is dry
Netti pots are often helpful for me, along with herbal steam showers and saline solution spray.
Make some masala chai (chai tea) with fresh spices. The spices boost immunity and help stop the physiological cascade that creates allergy symptoms. You can find recipes on YouTube.
These are a few of the natural remedies I gravitate towards! It’s more about being proactive rather than waiting for the blocked sinuses and being reactive.
Mullein lead tea is super gentle but powerful at clearing mucus from the lungs and throat.
Local raw honey which is soothing and antimicrobial but will also help you support your body when allergens are high.
Steam inhalation with thyme, eucalyptus, or peppermint.
Hydration! Lots of warm water or herbal teas to keep mucus thin and moving.
Lymphatic supportive herbs like calendula to help keep toxins moving out of your system.
Hope this helps!
I make beef jerky with carolina reapers. Very popular around allergy and flu season. People use it to clear their sinuses.
As a person who constantly has a runny nose, and knows my spices, this is kind of iffy.
The main problem is that "spicy" is not specific. Some people think black pepper is spicy. I don't. Garlic and fresh onion are not "spicy", thay are "pungent".
Hot: capsaicin (jalapenos, cayenne, hot peppers, added to cinnamon candies) - this usually causes my nose to run when it wasn't before. Whether this counts as "clearing your nose" is up to you. It will definitely flush it out, if you get enough.
Sharp: horseradish (isothiocyanates), which is added to some mustards to make them "hot", also some mustards naturally have high amounts of it - this will absolutely clear my nose, my sinuses, and possibly my throat. In addition, the sensation does not last as long as with capsaicin, which can linger AND spread.
I believe this is not bullshit unless you have a very bad cold.
snjört some horseradish
I actually was just looking into this and from what I’ve read spicy foods definitely clear your sinuses. You could also test this theory yourself or hear some anecdotal evidence.
Kimchi power probiotic
Happy Cake Day!
i’m sick and just wanna breathe again
Take anything that will provide a vibration (vibrator, shaver, face scrubber, etc) & rub it across your face: nose, sinuses, forehead. This will induce several sneezes then a period of very runny, blowable mucus.
I'm going to try this next time I have a stuffy nose. I hope this works! If it does you will have my ever lasting gratitude.
Wow, a new tip I did not know of as a regular sinus haver. Thanks
Eat spicy foods
This is my favorite treatment for a stuffy nose
If you do this, and stop doing blow, you’ll be set
Saline nasal spray. Arm & Hammer makes one. Pressurized saline. It sounds gross, it takes a little while to get the hang of it, but it is a miracle worker.
I could kiss you, my nose has been so messed up for years and this actually helped that wasn't some shitty nasal spray that soon as it wears off your stuff nose is worse. Thank you!
I use simply saline while in the shower..the humidity works to loosen then the saline flush to get the gunky stuff
I do the same but with a neti pot in the shower. Contrary to other advice, I just use warm shower water and add 1/2t sea salt. You get so much more gunk out when you're pre-steamed, and the mess is way less to deal with. Plus you can bend over and blow your nose upside down etc.
Tap water is not safe or made to go into your nose.
At CVS or Walgreens or Walmart
NeilMed Sinus Rinse -- poor man's Navage
It's a kit, about $10 but you have to buy a jug of distilled water to make the saline. I've been flushing my sinuses in the shower for years. It's really effective
So, I’ve been battling a nasty combo of lingering flu symptoms, bad air quality, and my reactive airways acting up. On top of that, I’ve had the dreaded trifecta of sinus congestion, stuffed ears, and swollen lymph nodes in my throat. It’s been rough. But then, buldak noodles entered the chat, and let me tell you—they’re not just delicious; they’re borderline magical.
Over the past several days, eating those fiery noodles has been an absolute game changer. Not only did they feel amazing as I was eating them, but I could actually feel the capsaicin working on my sinus issues and congestion. There was definitely healing happening, so I researched why and here’s what I found:
Clearing the Gunk : Capsaicin helps thin mucus and improve sinus drainage. That “runny nose while eating” thing? It’s not just a side effect—it’s actually clearing out your sinuses.
Anti-Inflammatory Powers: Capsaicin interacts with your body in fascinating ways. It binds to a receptor (TRPV1) on sensory nerves, helping reduce inflammation. For me, it felt like it calmed down my swollen lymph nodes and my reactive airways. Bonus: capsaicin can also soothe that tight, irritated feeling in your throat.
Boosting Circulation & Immune Function: Eating something spicy increases blood flow to your sinuses and throat, which can bring immune cells to fight off whatever’s lingering in those areas. It’s like capsaicin gives your body a gentle nudge to heal faster.
Instant Sinus Relief: Let’s not forget the steam therapy effect. Eating a hot, spicy bowl of noodles not only warms you up but helps loosen mucus and reduce sinus pressure. That combo of heat + spice? Chef’s kiss for stuffed-up sinuses.
Mood Booster: Let’s be honest—when you’re under the weather, comfort food is half the battle. Spicy food like buldak noodles triggers endorphins, making you feel better mentally while also kicking your congestion’s butt.
After each bowl, I felt noticeably better—like my sinuses were clearing out, my ears were less stuffed, and my throat felt less irritated. Honestly, it’s wild how much capsaicin seems to help both physically and mentally.
TL;DR: Buldak noodles aren’t just delicious—they’re a natural remedy for sinus congestion, inflammation, and general “I feel like crap”-ness. If you’re fighting lingering sinus issues or respiratory funk, give these spicy bad boys a try. Your nose (and soul) will thank you.
Anyone else swear by spicy food as medicine? Or is it just me channeling my inner grandma with her home remedies?
I'd say it depends.....
Bad cold....100% helps. Clears the sinuses right up.
Flu....You're playing with fire. There's no way I'm risking my heat level or any heat level coming up..
I wanted a bit of spice during the flu, but not buldak-levels! Something like medium-spicy tonkotsu ramen or hot and sour soup. But after recovery, as I was dealing with the annoying and uncomfortable symptoms of my reactive airways flare-up, my body began craving fire spice.
Every time I saw spicy food on TV, my body was like, YES — I WANT THAT, NEED THAT 🥹, so when I felt well enough, I made Carbo noodles.
My body clearly knew what was up because eating it was genuinely magical. It physically hit better and less painfully than usual, which was a surprise.
It felt soooo good on the swollen lymph nodes in my throat, like it was doing some helpful work there. It got the crud in my head to break up and move, which was a welcome relief, as well. My ears, which had been plugged for two weeks, started to clear. It briefly caused a productive cough and runny nose, so I was able to get some of it out.
Then afterwards, the lingering burn (very unexpectedly reduced) on my lips/mouth felt extra pleasant and the endorphins capped off the whole experience with a sense of feeling better/healed, as well as that lovely full-body sensation of well-being.
Plus any compounding effects in the bowels from spicy food is just going to dehydrate you more. And god forbid the flu hits in more directions that one.
Black pepper, Ginger, Turmeric, Garlc, Cayenne, Cloves and Cumin are the best spices for flu season.
Anything dairy is likely just going to create more congestion.
Always have the hottest Hot and Sour Soup, with an obscene amount of hot pepper added when sick. Can confirm. Will try Buldak next time.
So my sinuses are giving me mild triuble and I don't want them to increase. What are the do's and don'ts?
I just stopped eating processed sugars and white bread. I stick to natural food and lots of honey and I can see my breathing is much better. I also drink tea regularly and sometime spicy food is good too.
Avoid dairy, wheat and sugar. Eat spicy and warming things.
Wheat too? Well aldready messed up then. I read somewhere that rice should not be eaten at night so started eating wheat rotis. So what should I eat for dinner then if no rice and wheats?
Lentils, beans... rice should be ok, don’t eat after 8.
No dairy for sure (cheese, milk, ice cream, yogurt). Dairy thickens mucous so it's harder for sinuses to drain.
If you can, try to eat more keto. I found carbs/grains seemed to bother my sinuses, eating less sugar/sweet food helped.
Yeast/mold in fermented food (beer/bread, pickles, vinegar in salad dressing) may be a problem.
Anything with preservatives/sodium benzoate could also bother, maybe you could track what you're eating and see what makes it better/worse.
It's not fun but changing what I eat makes all the difference.
Flonase and hot sauce
Steam inhale with added Olbas Oil.
Steam inhalation
Non-medicated saline spray.
I've been trying this but I find the nozzle really irritates and makes it worse
Oh no, that's unfortunate! Well, in that case, I'll second the spicy food and inhaling steam suggestions.
Simply Saline nasal irrigation, or a neti pot.
