MySims
If you enjoyed the cozy sim atmosphere of Animal Crossing, MySims might be a great fit for you. It offers similar gameplay mechanics with an emphasis on building houses and furniture, befriending quirky characters, and absorbing good vibes [1:1]
[1:2]. The game is pressure-free, without micromanaging or time crunches, making it ideal for those who want a relaxing experience
[1:2].
Ooblets
Ooblets combines farming simulation with creature collection and dance battles, offering a cute and fun alternative to Animal Crossing. While there is some resource gathering involved, the game is generally light-hearted and enjoyable [2:1]
[2:7]. It's available on Switch and has received positive feedback from players looking for a similar vibe to Animal Crossing
[4:10].
Cozy Grove
Cozy Grove is another game that captures the essence of Animal Crossing with its real-time gameplay and charming atmosphere. Players can explore the island, complete tasks for ghostly inhabitants, and enjoy the game's cozy environment [2:3]
[2:8]. It's known for being a relaxing experience without the stress of time limits.
Spiritfarer
For those interested in a narrative-driven experience, Spiritfarer offers a unique blend of management and platforming elements. Players take on the role of a ferrymaster for the deceased, collecting recipes, completing tasks, and building structures [2:2]. The game is praised for its emotional depth and beautiful art style, providing a comforting yet engaging experience.
Littlewood
Littlewood allows players to recruit villagers, decorate homes, and fulfill NPC requests in a simplified farming setting [5:2]
[5:5]. It emphasizes community-building and customization, similar to Animal Crossing, and offers a demo for players to try before committing
[5:4].
Dragon Quest Builders 2
This game incorporates village-building and decoration mechanics, along with recruiting villagers to your community [5:6]. While it includes some farming elements, the focus is more on creativity and exploration, providing a different but familiar experience to Animal Crossing fans.
These games offer a variety of experiences that capture the charm and relaxation of Animal Crossing while introducing new mechanics and narratives. Whether you're interested in building, exploring, or managing relationships, there's likely something here to suit your tastes.
I’ve never played any sims games. This looks right up my street with the cozy sim atmosphere. Noticed it’s currently on sale on the switch store too.
Wanted to try figure out if it’s right for me. I love animal crossing I have 100s of hours in that game. I got the itch for new cozy games and bought stardew valley. Ooblets etc. but got so frustrated with the micro managing farming inventory sides. (I think I hate farming) lol! Would this game be a good pick for me? Thanks. ❤️
No micromanaging. No time crunch. Just good vibes building houses and furniture and befriending quirky characters. It's a very pressure free game! Hope you enjoy it!
Ooo that sounds great. 😊 is there ton of resource gathering for building the houses, and decorating? Or does the game give you the items to decorate?
There is a lot of resource gathering in the form of planting trees, fishing and excavating, but it's not really that tedious and you can father resources fairly quickly.
i recommend it I love it!! and love it so much more than animal crossing. I like kingdom more/have more fun with it but the original is a classic so i started with kingdom but you can start with either
Great to hear. Thank you!! 🤩
i also just got the game bundle and i don't regret it at all!! it's so much fun and also hilarious, it's so chill too. no time pressure or something like that. it's just great tbh!
Yay 🥳 Which game did you start with? Kingdom or the original? I think I’ll start with the original first. 😃
I'd recommend the original (just because its more buildy) Then I'd go to kingdom because it's a little more story driven but still has that real fun aspect to it!
Infact I didn't even grow up with the OG on the Wii I played the DS version and I'm having ALOT of fun with it at 27!
i also started with the original!
Imo if you like animal crossing you will LOVE MySims they came out around the same time an had some similar GD mechanics
It's funny and now has a very nice development team definitely worth investing time into if you wanna kick back an absorb some good healthy energy its such a fun gem one of a kind!
I love playing AC but I don’t really have anything left to do. It’s my comfort game and I want something similar to try to play. I heard breath of the wild would be good but I am bad at fighting and you can’t play it with a changed setting to easy gameplay so I started crying trying to fight the same 4 gnomes for an hour. I have switch and a ps4.
I have nearly finished Spiritfarer. I love it. Some similarities are recipe collecting, tasks from characters, building and improving structures. There is also a goodly amount of jumping. It’s a platformer essentially. None of it too stressful except for some interactions with a character named Daria which require patience and perseverance and web searches (lol), but I managed to do it. I took about a month to play through, but that was staying up waaaaay too late every night, I think maybe a normal person should take a couple of months to play it. I got it on sale so look out for a good price.
Love that game!!
Cozy Grove is a good one.
+1 for Cozy Grove! Just started it a couple weeks ago and I love it 🐻
Thanks for this rec, I just finished my first day of tasks and am actually excited to play again tomorrow. I hadn’t touched me switch in a while
omg this looks amazing/adorable. will absolutely be playing! thanks!
Have you played Stardew Valley?
Do you have a switch? Because you can buy it early access!! It’s cheap enough too! I’m addicted and I swear I’m enjoying it more than ACNH! It should be in the store on there❤️
Stardew Valley was HARD in the beginning and not at all relaxing. However once I googled some hints for getting started and could actually get through a day accomplishing things instead of just trying not to pass out it did get fun.
Try Ooblets, it’s my second favourite game after Animal Crossing! Takes a little bit to get into but it’s so cute and fun.
This is what I was gonna recommend!! Ooblets is so great
Disney Dreamlight Valley is amazing!!!!
Like with a sweet atmosphere and nice npcs. Bonus if it has animals in it
Obligatory Stardew Valley. NPCs to grow relationships with and a relaxing small town atmosphere with a touch of fantasy(magic and spirits).
Fantasy life for the 3ds
My Time at Portia
A Short Hike on PC!
Thank you for reminding me of this game!
Haha you’re welcome! It’s one of my favorite finds from the last year.
Garden Paws
Seconding this suggestion! It’s like Animal Crossing, but within the real-time aspect.
I absolutely love Animal Crossing but I would like something similar to it for my computer. Any suggestions?
My Time at Portia and Stardew Valley are both games I have 100+ hours in and have personally scratched that Animal Crossing itch for me (Switch AC can't come soon enough...!).
Portia's big focus is crafting, but it also has fishing, gathering materials in the wild (from trees, herbs, etc.), and really interesting characters that live in the town. You get to see the area develop and more people appear as the story progresses, and all the aforementioned things really reminded me of Animal Crossing in a good way. It's my personal goodfeel game, haha.
Stardew Valley is more focused on farming, but it's similarly comfy and has a lively town you get to see develop and lovely characters to interact and raise your relationship with. Like I said, both games have content for AGES, I still haven't done everything possible in either despite hundreds of hours in, haha.
Now this one I haven't played myself so take this with a grain of salt, but Garden Paws is currently in early access and looks pretty promising. It has animal characters instead of humans like AC, too! You expand your home, develop your town, sell things, farm, gather, interact with villagers, etc.. Yonder also looks like it has the same comfy feel going for it, though it's apparently not as extensive as the aforementioned examples. Also, it's not out yet, but you might want to keep an eye out for Ooblets? It looks like it has that same comfy vibe, and I'm definitely looking forward to it, myself.
Hope that helped at least a bit, from one Animal Crossing fan to another, haha. :-)
Stardew and Portia are perfect. Another game very similar that I've been playing the shit out of lately is Graveyard Keeper. Definitely check it out, especially since you can get it for $13 in the current Humble Bundle.
HOWEVER, be aware that the ending of the game is apparently total shit. If you know that's coming and have braced for it, the game should scratch that same Animal Crossing itch.
Quick question about Portia. Does the time pass in it similarily to Harvest Moon’s and Stardew Valley?
The game looks really nice, but personally I start to feel really pressured when I played HM games and SW because of the time passing - I can’t relax and it just makes me more stressed, which is the opposite effect from what I’m looking for in these games. In Animal Crossing it doesn’t matter as much since the time moves equally to real life, but anything beyond that gets too stressful to me.
It does have seasons and days passing, and although story quests are almost always either increeeeedibly lenient with timing (like, giving you over two weeks in-game time, when you usually need one or two at most, or in 90% of the cases, no time limit at all), there are timed optional quests and things like that.
The good news is you can adjust the speed the days pass by, and there's no penalty to staying up until 3 AM like in Stardew, but, yeah, if SW and Harvest Moon stress you out, this one will probably do the same. :c
Thanks for this post. I love Animal Crossing as well and these games look great!
Of course, no problem! We fellow AC fans have to look out for eachother during these times of uncertainty and waiting. ;-)
(Nintendo, please give us the good news at E3!)
I've had my eye on Ooblets since maybe last year so I'm really looking forward to it's release and my friends and I are absoloutely ecstatic and can't wait for AC to release on switch
Stardew Valley is kinda like Animal Crossing.
You have your own house and farm as well as other town residents and their houses that you can enter. You have activities you can do to make money like farming, fishing, and cave delving. You can improve relationships with residents by giving gifts and do tasks for them like in Animal Crossing. There are holidays in-game too.
As others have said, Stardew Valley and My Time At Portia are both really great games. I also own Staxel but haven't played it yet.
Stardew Valley. The answer is always Stardew Valley.
Wait for Littlewood it's going to be released this month. You can also check out Forager.
Just to elaborate on your latter suggestion for others. I'd argue that games like Animal Crossing are mostly if not entirely casual.
But just a warning to others, Forager is even more casual. I loved the automation the most but even that didn't save it for me. It's a very simple game. Not bad, just wasn't for me, despite liking games like Animal Crossing, and despite loving crafting/automation.
Hi!
There was a post a while ago where someone asked about games like Animal Crossing, but they were looking for different aspects of the game than I was looking for, so I found most of the suggestions to not be what I was looking for.
What I'm looking for: A game that has the whole finding villagers aspect and moving them into your island, I like the whole customisation and decorating aspect too, basically I want animal crossing that isn't animal crossing because I've over played animal crossing way too much 😭
I've already played Hokko Life, Cozy Grove and have finished Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time.
I don't really like the farming aspect most of the games had that were recommended in that post I saw, I find it very tedious and annoying. I don't mind if there is a farming aspect, as long as it's light and not the main focus of the game. I have also tried the story of seasons series and have not liked it at all.
At this point, I believe the game I'm looking for doesn't exist on Switch besides the ones I've played but I'm holding out hope there's some hidden gem out there I haven't found! I might have to learn how to make a game just to make the game I want lmao
Any recommendations help! Thank you!
Littlewood might check some of those boxes: villagers want to move in and request specific goals and house placements, you have to decorate each home a certain way to improve their relationships, it does have farming but it's a very simplified approach and not the primary focus. It's mostly gathering materials and fulfilling NPC requests.
Ah what a shame that Critter Cove is not on switch as it seems like it could be what you’re looking for. It seems they do plan to release on switch eventually but nothing firm yet, maybe keep an eye out for the future?
If you don’t mind a certain amount of gameplay being limited by irl time and that the villagers you invite aren’t random, maybe also consider Hello Kitty Island Adventure. Inviting villagers to the island and decorating their houses is kinda a big part of the gameplay, but they are predetermined characters that are part of the storyline.
I LOVED Critter Cove, I have it on my PC but my PC is so out of date that it lags a bit and eventually that got really annoying haha, but I really hope they do release on Switch one day! (Or I can buy a steam deck or something so I can play it on that if it supports steam deck play lmao)
Hello Kitty Island Adventure was one I forgot to mention I've already played 😔 I've played so many games I forget sometimes aaa
Hah, good to see my instincts were right - I got to this late and was immediately thinking Critter Cove, not thinking about the PC thing.
TBH I play most of my cozy games on PC so I don’t really have good Switch suggestions :/
That's the game I immediately thought of. Maybe it's not on Switch, because it's still in early access. Who knows, maybe the official release will also be on Switch. They added 4 new islands a few weeks ago, which seemed like the biggest updates, but there are still zones you can't access, so they aren't done developing it apparently.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 has the finding villagers aspect if I remember correctly. And you can decorate your village.
I was going to recommend this! It’s really a fun game, I had a blast playing it. There is farming, but for the most part you can get the villagers to do all the farming for you. You might have to do a bit more in the beginning.
The game has a “jumbo demo” you can download. I think I played the demo alone for like, 50 hours. You definitely will know if you like it or not by then! Although decor-wise, there’s a lot more options that open up after the demo is over, so just keep that in mind. Decor is very bare bones in the beginning.
Seconding this. You not only recruit villagers to your island but they become active members of the growing community (chefs, farmers, etc), which I really appreciated and enjoyed and thought it set it apart a bit from other villager recruiting games. There is a bit of farming but it’s minimal and you can have your villagers do it for you.
I've seen this one reccomended a few times and it sounds really interesting! Do you have to know anything about Dragon Quest before playing it?
Definitely give Dinkum a try! It's based in the Australian outback and feels very much like Animal Crossing :)
I think part of Hello Kitty Island Adventure is decorating cabins to convince characters to move to the island.
Dinkum will be released for Switch in November if I'm not mistaken
Hey all! I've been on the hunt for something to scratch the cozy game itch and with the world how it is I want something to kind of dive into. My favorite game during the pandemic was animal crossing. What i loved about it, the most, was the museum building. Fishing, finding bugs, etc. I love completing a catalog and discovering things, it's why I'm a big fan of Pokemon. Also a big fan of growing and collecting all the flower varieties. I've loved mobile games that have any aspect of collecting/breeding/evolving creatures (pocket frogs, DragonVale, etc). I tried Stardew because people love it, but it cannot get into the actual farming. I loved the cave exploring and mining but hated the time constraints so without mods it wasnt really playable for me. I'm so so on building and decorating. It can be hit or miss but I enjoyed it in animal crossing for a time.
Tldr: I love creature collecting, cave exploring, flower collecting. Hate planting crops. Can get into decorating maybe. Help?
Edit: sorry! Looking for Switch recs!
Have you tried Fae Farm? Also Dinkum and maybe Grand Bazaar would hold interest?
I haven't but fae farm looks promising!
I enjoyed fae farm. The characters are just NPCs so trying to build a relationship with any of them sucks. But! It was fun to collect the different critters and flowers and such.
Just don't buy it at full price. Wait for a sale. I got my game plus the expansions for half price and that was the perfect price for the game.
I always recommend this video to anyone considering buying Fae Farm. It’s from two years ago but the information is still valid, especially because they’ve since abandoned the game (and removed multiplayer).
Moonstone Island is a deckbuilder/creature collecting game. It DOES have some farming, but a lot of the crops are used for energy/powering up your spirits. It's mainly an exploration/dungeon crawling game with farming on the side as a means of energy or money.
Check out:
Ritual of raven - top suggestion
Potion permit - I can't remember if it has Dungeons or not
Wytchwood
Strange horticulture
Little wood
Moonstone island
None of these games are really farming Sims where the goal is to manufacture a huge numbers of things. I mean, doing so will get you a little bit of money, but progress ultimately comes from different areas in the game. So you can't really bring yourself out by having too big of a farm
Fantasy Life
Dinkum is the closest to Animal Crossing I've played.
Seconding dinkum
But not on the switch and not stardew Valley :)
Thanks!
Xbox and Playstation :)
I cannot recommend Cozy Grove enough!! It is absolutely cute and definitely has a lot of similarities with AC. It is very cheap and is on Steam but pretty sure is on PS as well. Please take a look at it.
Hokko Life if you're on PC
> Cozy Grove
Really mixed reviews on Steam for that one...
I have put a ton of time into Cozy Grove and it's amazing! Definitely recommend especially if you want to log in every day.
What system? On PC there's Cozy Grove and Garden Paws. They're both similar to animal crossing but indie.
Oh forgot Playstation or xbox!
I think Cozy Grove is on xbox. I'm unsure about Garden Paws though.
My Time at Portia
I got a switch on Monday as a gift from my parents, although I’m extremely conflicted. I picked Animal Crossing, Splatoon 3 and Minecraft as my first game choices.. I asked a close friend who has a switch for game recommendations and he said those games would fit my personality well and that I would most likely grow a liking to them. (Which I did)
I enjoy games that are time consuming, has a grind, and possibly games to play with other people. However, I do love horror/suspenseful games too!
I guess what I’m really asking for is game recommendations for people who aren’t too sure what they’re into? The last time I had a Nintendo device was years ago when I got a Nintendo Ds Lite when I was younger. I’m not too sure what to go off of when looking for games.
Any recommendations are appreciated 🙌💜💜
Just get Stardew Valley, can’t go wrong with that
Would I enjoy animal crossings if Stardew's gameplay didn't sit well with me?
I hated Stardew, love Animal Crossing. Stardew was too much time pressure for me.
Really depends on what kind of play style you want, Animal crossing is a very chill game that is pretty much stress free, you do everything when you want, there is no wrong way to play, it’s mostly just collecting stuff and decorating your island in order to beat the game. If you like customizing/decorating stuff then Animal crossing would be good for you especially if you get the DLC
Don't get stardew if you want to do other things in life besides play stardew
Is it addicting? I’m assuming that’s what you meant from that, correct me if I’m wrong though!
There's Story of Seasons that you might possibly liked. I wanted to get it but since I already dropped a pretty penny on accessories, games and new Lite, I'm holding back before buying similar games.
I googled the game and is it a game series? There was three different options for the game.. If so, is there one specifically I should play? I feel you on the accessories part though! There are such cute accessories when it comes to the switches 🙌💜
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are interesting because the games are free: you can choose the path you take, whether its to challenge the gyms and be a champion ranked trainer, or to challenge the bosses of the newest group, Team Star, or uou can challenge Titans found in different areas of the region. Unlike most Pokemon games, the legendaries are available at the very start of the game. Your friends Nemona and Arven are there to support you in your journey along with the mysterious Cassandra. You unlock abilities for Miraidon/Koraidon as you defeat Titans (and feed them sandwiches homemade by your friend Arven) such as the ability to travel on water and much more!
Sounds interesting! My older brother had the game on pre-order and got it in the mail not too long ago. When he’s done playing it I’ll definitely ask him if I can borrow it, thank you!!! 🙌💜💜
I suppose you like fun games that you can play in short bursts with minimal story, tutorials etc. so I’d probably suggest MarioKart and Super Smash Brothers Ultimate.
I hated super Mario Odyssey personally, it’s a good Mario game, but not everybody enjoys Mario games. They’re targeted towards kids, there is no story to speak of, no voice acting, gameplay is very simple, difficulty very low, I found it boring.
I'm trying to find a new game for the switch I'll like.
Games I've played include:
Animal Crossing
Stardew Valley
Garden Paws
Cozy Grove
Story of Seasons (Olive Town)
My Time at Portia
West of Loathing
Cat Tails
Song of the Ever Tree
Animal Crossing (New Leaf, New Horizons) was my favorite game, and I've found nothing that equals it at all. I liked talking to the animals, and finding things, and decorating to some extent. Fishing was okay in that game.
Stardew is a great game, and probably my second favorite. But I definitely did not like combat in the mines. Fishing was virtually impossible on the Switch. I liked interacting with the characters, and I liked the humor and some other interesting things Concerned Ape included (like background on Shawn and other characters). It started out frustrating because walking was so slow -- if you went to town at all, that pretty much used up the day. I liked the game so much more after I got a horse.
I don't like feeling pressured by time: having to be fast, or really limited by day length. I don't like most combat. I've grown tired of farming, and taking care of animals. (I like hearing the sounds of them in Stardew :) )
I do like foraging and talking to villagers.
I don't know if I'm just tiring of games, or if I just can't find the right one. I really think if Nintendo came out with a new Animal Crossing, I'd like it, but that's not going to happen.
Ooblets
Absolutely! Collecting, farming and very cute dancing creatures.
Dinkum actually made me go on PC for the first time in a long time
Second this, Dinkum is legit just AC for PC.
Coral island is another good one that is basically AC+Stardew combined.
We seem to like the same style of games and my favorite after Animal Crossing is Littlewood. It has a lot of what you're looking for and it only costs $15 so not a lot of risk involved in trying it out.
Coming to second Littlewood! Minimal farming? Check. No combat? Check. Not feeling rushed/no “time” scheme? Check (littlewood “time” goes by how much energy you use - you get a set amount and then you go to bed! I LOVED this). Cute little villagers to talk to and make homes for? Check!
It really is such a gem.
i know OP asked for Switch, but its half price right now for the Steam summer sale!
Thanks! I'll look at it.
Pretty Princess Magical Garden Island is pretty Animal Crossing looking.
It is different in that you mine stuff on the beach, have to craft items to use to buy decorations, grow crops needed to fulfill requests and to make other items needed to fulfill requests. You fulfill requests to earn money and level up. Leveling up unlocks more decor, dresses, buildings, and crops.
There is no day-night cycle, and things happen in real time. Like, most crops and buildings take 5min to produce. Longest I've seen so far is 10min, but that hasn't felt like an issue because I can go do other stuff while I wait.
It is cutesy, and pink, and "girly", but I think it's enjoyable.
Thanks! I'm not exactly girly :), but I'm not afraid of cute and pink.
There’s a variety of colors to choose from for the majority of decor including blacks and blues and greens and browns! The farther along you get, the more you unlock. It is very “girly” though!
Spiritfarer! Beautiful art style, great music, no combat, and really thoughtful dialogue with characters. It's an absolutely stunning game. ✨
I’ve been a long time animal crossing player (since game cube!) admittedly, im a little bored and want to play similar games. What have you guys found that you enjoy playing?
Palia, it is super similar but more interactive with other players. It’s a little less cutesy and more magical, I played it first and love both!
Stardew valley !
Dreamlight Valley
Hello Kitty Island Adventure!
Its not the exact same but I do love Cozy Grove. You play as a spirit scout on an abandoned island, where you meet local spirits. Its more story driven through dialog and you learn about their lives and what happened to the island. It can be a little melancholy at times, but heart warming. There's critters, fishing, hair, clothes, decor items, crafting, material gathering, and decorating the island and interior of your tent.
Games to play if you liked animal crossing
If you enjoyed Animal Crossing, consider these games:
Stardew Valley
Spiritfarer
My Time at Portia
Garden Paws
The Sims 4
Cozy Grove
Recommendation: Start with Stardew Valley if you haven't played it yet. It offers a deep and rewarding experience with farming and community-building elements that resonate well with Animal Crossing fans. Plus, it's available on multiple platforms, making it accessible.
