TL;DR
Games with Similar Vibes
Several games have been recommended that capture the cozy and relaxing vibe of Stardew Valley. Slime Rancher is frequently mentioned for its charming atmosphere, cute slimes, and exploration elements without any real danger [1:8]
[4:1]. Littlewood offers a similar experience with no combat and focuses on building and managing a town
[2:1]
[3:9].
Farming and Life Simulation
For those who enjoy the farming aspect of Stardew Valley, Roots of Pacha provides a unique twist by setting the game in the Stone Age [3:3]. Rune Factory combines farming with RPG elements and has been a source of inspiration for Stardew Valley
[1:1]. My Time at Portia also incorporates farming but leans more towards RPG elements and quests
[1:3].
Management and Exploration
If you prefer management and exploration, Spiritfarer is a cozy management game worth checking out [4:4]. Graveyard Keeper offers a morbid twist on the farming genre with mortuary work alongside farming aspects
[1:7]
[3:4].
Other Recommendations
Some users suggested transitioning into city builders or colony sims like Manor Lords and Farthest Frontier, which focus more on management and can include farming systems [5:1]. Mother 3, although not directly related to farming, was mentioned as an emotional and engaging game with a good story
[4:3].
I love stardew valley but I’m trying to expand my horizons. Any suggestions for good games that fall in the same style as stardew? I like animal crossing and things like that.
*** I have a ps4 and a switch ***
I really enjoyed Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles, and Slime Rancher is really beautiful art and story, fun gameplay.
Disliked My Time At Portia, Graveyard Keeper, Don't Starve Together. They commonly get recommended.
It probably depends on what you enjoy most about SV
What about My Time at Portia and Graveyard Keeper did you dislike? These are the two my girlfriend has been looking at, and I've been considering getting her for V-Day. Her favorite aspect of Stardew is the Mines/Skull Caves.
I like quests and gathering, open world and open timelines.
Portia bored me.
Charm is a key factor for most games to me.
Terraria and Skyrim have charming qualities I don't always find.
Upvote for slime rancher! It’s pretty and calm and you’re never in real danger.
You should take a look at my time at portia! It's got similar aspects to stardew valley, but it's also quite different. It's focus is less on farming and being a relaxing game, and more on RPG elements.
Anyway, it's a good game, sharing similarities with Stardew Valley!
I second this! It's a fantastic game.
Oh my god, yes. Ive been playing that game nonstop the past two weeks.
You should try the new Animal Crossing game whenever it comes out in March. I tried New Leaf (3DS) after playing Stardew and I had a good time.
A game called graveyard keeper has been suggested to me a few times as "a morbid stardew valley". It has farming aspects as well as you do mortuary work. Id suggest maybe watching a play through on youtube and seeing if its right for you. Its $20 on Xbox idk about other platforms
This is what I've just switched to. Got it in the latest humble bundle. Its a little slow to start, but it's just as engrossing!
Oh thank you! I had no idea.
Rune Factory is being remastered for the switch
My time at Portia if you play on PC
If you have a 3DS, Rune Factory and the Harvest Moon games are what Stardew Valley drew inspiration from
Hi all!
I have a somewhat specific ask for a cozy game. I want something that embodies the vibes and aesthetics of Stardew Valley, but doesn't feel like it requires spending time in combat or mining. I'd like something that really focuses on the farming, upgrades, and working on your land or home.
I have a ton of games in this genre and I'm not sure any of them scratch the itch quite right. They either don't have skill upgrades or real progression, or they end up requiring you to go into some combat area or mines, and spend time grinding in them.
Ideally, I would find a game that has other activities than farming (having mining is totally fine!), but where it's not *required*. I want to be able to progress through the game using whichever activity/s I enjoy most, and I would especially love if there are upgrades to the farm like larger sprinkler systems or auto tillers or even tractors.
Long story short - I want a game that's cute, colorful, and fun, and focused primarily on farming but has some sense of progression, maybe skill growth or unlockable technology, and doesn't require combat at all.
Finally, to make this really challenging, can you think of any that aren't Harvest Moon, Story of Season, or that don't have magic?
Kynseed has a lot of freedom to play how you want. After you make it through the tutorial (2 weeks) it kind of stops telling you what to do and leaves it up to the player. There are many ways to make money as you can buy up to 3 general stores where you can sell anything you want, 3 apothecaries, and 3 blacksmiths. You can even specialize them later. There is combat but it is in its own area so it's kind of optional. Mining is not as tedious as other games as a cave might only have a few ore to mine as you only need 1 ore per tool you make. When you upgrade your shops you can even buy items you don't want to gather yourself. There is a lot of exploration, relationship building, the main story, collecting proverbs, and much more. It does have a skill tree.
If you marry and have children (you can also adopt if preferred), you are able to assign them tasks around the farm for anything you don't want to do like planting, watering, cooking, gathering, etc.
Dinkum is also great and has everything you are looking for in terms of farming with sprinklers and vehicles. If you turn on the peaceful wish combat is only really required in the mines and at the lower levels. There are also other ways to get ores and such without going into the mines.
In Kynseed combat isn't optional if you intend to complete the game but you can turn the speed down to the point where it's not hard at all. I found the farming system pretty bland though
Combat isn’t really optional, if you want to progress at all you can’t avoid it and at some point different locations get monsters spawning where you have to destroy their weird tower, which can get in the way if you need to do things in that area of the map.
Maybe it’s helpful that it’s turn based? But personally I was annoyed that I didn’t have more control over whether to engage in combat or not
Minecraft on Peaceful mode, no combat is necessary, nothing aggressive spawns, you can farm and get everything you need to get going without needing to mine
Farming in that is honestly always pretty fun You can explore the world, trade, mine if you want, build whatever, houses, machines, go treasure map hunting, find sunken ships, explore ancient ruins etc.
You can even add mods to expand farming or UI or anything if you want too
Can also tame cats birds dogs etc Can use a cute texture packs Can play multiplayer at anytime if you want Can build villages that will be lived in
Alternatively any other open world survival game on a peaceful mode or with peaceful mods is good they usually have fairly in depth farming and crafting and exploration systems
The only thing without combat that comes to mind is Roots of Patcha. In Fae farm you can brew an invisibility potion and avoid combat, but it’s still there in the mines.
Coral Island has really easy combat, to the degree where I’m not sure why they bother. The main progress of the game is farming/ranching/gathering. There’s a fair amount of interaction with the other townsfolk, but I think it’s probably optional.
You can turn off combat in the settings too makes mining more chill
So not aesthetically the same but Echoes of the Plum grove? There’s no combat most of the danger is survival-based (illness and starvation) but this can be toggled off. There’s mining but it’s not a big part of the game, you can only mine so much per day.
There’s also Littlewood. Zero combat, there is mining but it’s not like mining in other similar games. There’s no puzzles in the mines, there are creatures you have to avoid but the only thing that happens if you run into them is getting booted out of the mine for the day.
You might like Travellers Rest. It’s early access but there’s quite a bit of content and you can play endlessly (although the story isn’t done) there’s farming, fishing, gathering, a bit of mining. But it might have combat in the future and more mining so you might not like the full release of the game.
There’s Sprout Valley but I would only buy it on deep, deep, deep discount. Good game to play while watching tv or listening to audio books. There’s mining like breaking rocks but you don’t go underground and there are no mines, just different islands to explore. No combat.
Looking for cozy indie titles (preferably with a good soundtrack/art style) that are chill, go-at-your-own-pace types. Something where you manage and grow farm/restaurant/business etc. PC preferred, thanks! :)
How about Slime Rancher? It's a relaxing game that encourages exploration and that has a really great sense of atmosphere. You can collect and cultivate cute slimes for profit, grow crops to sustain them, and can experiment with all sorts of cool gadgets and contraptions. As a rancher, you're free to explore an open world that's filled with hidden secrets and can do so at your own own pace. There's even a free demo on Steam that you can try, as well as an upcoming sequel to look forward to. Which I think looks pretty promising.
Roots of Pacha dropped yesterday. It’s Stone Age stardew and is really good
Do you think it’s worth the price on Steam right now?
Yeah, I think it is personally
I'm having a blast with graveyard keeper.
Graveyard Keeper is over of those juicy ADHD games where there's just so much to build, craft, research, and just do, that you constantly keep forgetting what you're doing and get sidetracked.
I've almost gotten it so many times. I think the problem is when I play this kind of game I want to make my own character, or at least have a couple options.
Littlewood
I will echo Sun Haven (a more RPG focused Stardew) and Dinkum (Stardew with a heavy mix of animal crossing) both are phenomenal games. Also, if you haven't I would recommend checking out Stardew Valley mods on Nexus mods. There's some great ones that add tons of gameplay.
I’d love to play games that have a similar vibe, whether it’s farming or town-building or just chilling in a relaxing little world.
I’d play something like Animal Crossing, but I only have a PC with Steam and an old Xbox 360.
Any suggestions? :D
I haven't found anything that really came close to being as satisfying. Tried Graveyard Keeper, My Time at Portia, Rune Factory 4, and Forager but none of them have whatever it is about Starfew that keeps me coming back!
Hoping Roots of Pacha next year does the trick.
Mother 3 was one of the games that inspired this. Nintendo never released it in English but there is a fan-made translation on an emulator for the PC which is very good. if you do get into it, prepare a box of tissues for crying into ahead of time though. while funny and light-hearted most of the time it has some very sad and emotional moments, but culminates in a powerful ending that will leave you uplifted. also, "The End?" is not the end, try walking when that happens (it almost fooled me which is why I warn you now)
Spiritfarer is a good cozy management game worth checking out.
I recommend Rune Factory 4 or Littlewood.
Slime Rancher! Very relaxing and cute, in my opinion it has very similar vibe. You have slimes, crops, crafting recipes, large world, relaxing music... The only difference is that there's no NPC's to interact with.
I was just going to suggest Slime Rancher.
[deleted]
Maybe transition into city builders/ colony sims like Manor Lords, or Farthest Frontier? FF even has a crop rotation system as a main selling point.
Colony sims sound about the right track maybe
(Only one i didn't enjoy was cities skylines)
Played those two and now I want more MOOOREE :D
Story of Seasons!
Full on farming and relationship building. I cannot believe no one mentioned them yet.
Especially since Story of Seasons is the same franchise as the old Harvest Moon games and the current Harvest Moon series is a new series with an old name and they don't seem to have much heart, especially the newest game (I think it came out on the 2nd of march). Story of Seasons Pioneers of Olive Town (which came out yesterday) is looking good so far though!
My time at Portia
Animal crossing
Little dragons Cafe
Harvest moon
kynseed (in early access)
How is this?
Imo its a mix of stardew valley (farming stuff) and my time at portia(the relationship mechanic). I'd say its in the middle of early access. regular content updates. your character age has influence in npc reactions, exploring mines, craft, breeding, etc. I like it
There's Rune Factory.
my time at portia :)
This game was honestly one of my biggest surprises after subbing gamepass. So much to do, so enjoyable. I really we get more games like this.
They are having a sequel coming out soon also.
Hopefully I'm allowed to post this here? Looking for recommendations for other games with a similar vibe to Stardew.
I mostly like cozy games, can't do 3-dimensional stuff cause i get motion sickness (like even Animal Crossing makes me dizzy 🥴) and not necessarily into combat heavy or violent games
Here are a few other games I've enjoyed. I play mainly on Switch or PC. Thanks for suggestions!!
Cozy Grove Garden Story Littlewood Wytchwood Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion Harvest Town (mobile)
Little Witch In The Woods! It's only a preview right now, but from the available content (around 2-4 hrs at least?) It's got the same vibes.
You, as an apprentice witch, miss your train to the big city. So you hole up in an abandoned witches hut and explore the area. Collect herbs, solve a couple puzzles, and explore. I don't remember any violence, so I don't think there's any battles :)
You can even help repair a little village with people! It's super cute aesthetically too :)
Terraria. You can play without the excessive violence but it's definitely violence driven. Buuuut you CAN turn gore off! Building and exploring on a random map every time is very relaxing for me. The npcs are fun to take care of or torture.
I've been on the fence for terraria. It seems overwhelming, is flow of the game east enough to follow?
Graveyard Keeper
I don't like that game, you can't customized your character, make me feel less into the story. Maybe becauseI thought it is sandbox game so i expect too much about the freedom and customization
Interesting, I felt more into the story in GK than SDV so far.
It's dark but oh so good! I like this game.
Spiritfarer is great!
I second this!
Honestly I've struggled to find a game just like Stardew. I originally started playing it because I wanted to re-live playing Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life. I wish it was available on PC.
Does anyone have any good suggestions? I don’t like straight up farming simulators but something with good balance with other qualities. Thx!
I recently got this game called Potion Permit and it’s kinda of Stardew like in the sense of helping out the town and fixing their problems. Only difference is that instead of a farmer, you’re an alchemist of sorts and you serve as the towns doctor basically. I haven’t played much tbh, but from the little I’ve played I’ve enjoyed it so far.
I was going to say Potion Permit too! Very fun, and I love going out to collect. I finished it and really enjoyed it.
Harvest Moon, the inspiration for Stardew.
They said they don't like straight up farm simulators
We could say that technically the objective of HM is to get married, the social aspect plays a big hole. Farming is almost the secondary objective 😂. (Because you can lose the game on the older ones, the game ends after 3 years if you don't achieve the social objective)
Early harvest moon or the current story of seasons, which is from the makers of harvest moon as far as i know.
Hmmm the newer ones are, well, more modern in some approaches, but they kept the essence of the old ones. But I would also play the Snes HM, it's very much the foundation to everything else and it is a fun game, and very "Stardew".
“My time at Portia” is a lot of fun. Villagers to meet, a town to improve, a map to discover, mines to delve, a house to decorate, and a simple fishing minigame.
Stardew was the first game I ever played seriously, Spiritfarer is the second and I highly recommend it..The game revolves around helping people accept their deaths, so play at your own discretion. The gameplay loop is really relaxing, and it'll make you feel some emotions.
I've been enjoying Graveyard Keeper.
i have recently gotten really into the idea of cozy gaming and it's honestly delightful. i'd already played stardew but didn't have much other experience with cozy games (except for cities: skylines, which is probably not cozy by the standards of the reddit, but it is very cozy To Me). recently i've been trying some new cozy games--i've loved lakeburg legacies, minami lane, tiny glade, and growing up; i did not quite rock with sun haven (character design was grating).
so here is the theoretical game i am dreaming of:
-medieval-ish in aesthetic (or potentially some other kind of historical aesthetic)
-illustrated style of graphics (flexible, i just don't like super smooth 3d graphics, and pixel-y graphics aren't what i'm imagining for this particular game)
-not primarily combat based
-some element of story/goal rather than just being a completely open sandbox
-not entirely based on one single type of task (like in potioncraft)
-ideally not first person
-i'm open regarding the conceit of the game--i love city builders, i love a quest, but i'm pretty flexible.
it's entirely possible that a game that fits all of these does not exist, but i figure it's worth asking. lakeburg legacies is probably the closest to this and i do love it but i'd love a game with somewhat more expansive game play. LL is pretty structured and i'd like a bit more freedom/variety.
Graveyard keeper may scratch the itch. The only thing it doesn’t check off is graphics. You’re well a graveyard keeper, you’re from modern times but sent back to like medieval, trying to figure out how to get home, you got a talking skeleton head, tons of different activities necessary to advance your goal, different characters, it’s got humor. It goes on sale. Might be worth checking out.
+1. It's amazing, one of my favorite games ever :) Graphics are beautiful too, and even though it is pixel art, it is very high-quality and detailed.
Medieval Dynasty possibly? You can switch from first-person mode to third person. I have played a little of it and there is combat in some places, but doesn’t seem to be a huge part of the game. There are also lots of customization options to tailor gameplay to your liking. You can turn off combat in certain areas and make the game much easier for a more cozy experience.
Came here to say this!
You can absolutely make it cozy, with no combat, hunger, thirst etc etc. It's really fun.
I have gotten addicted to it again, it’s a lot more fun when ye alter the game to not die from well anything and never get encumbered-like I just realized how much of the game I missed when I used to get weighted down so easily. But now I get to micromanage my people!
I kind of enjoy the weight mechanics. It made me have to come up with creative ways to set up storages where I could reach them via having my horse within range of where I’m cooking or crafting and the storage container.
If you like that graphic style, this isn't really a cozy game, but Inkulinati is fun too!
Agree it fits the bill, + it still runs well in my opinion
OP - Sims medieval has quests, and multi-part storylines so it's not as sandbox as the main franchise
I was thinking this exact game. And it’s so fun and cute!
It's what came to my mind instantly, as well! Pentiment is a gem of a game.
The first thing I thought of was Echoes of the Plum Grove. It's colonial, not medieval, a little like Stardew Valley, in that it's got farming and villagers to befriend, marry and start a family, or, you know, murder for the benefit of your lineage. It's got a really pleasing hand-drawn paper doll, 2D/3D art style that I think you'd like.
This is what I was going to recommend as well. If OP is looking for game play footage I recommend madmorphs playthrough, it's also very funny
I’ve tried to get into Stardew, but there is just too much to do and it’s overwhelming for me. It really seems like a great game. Is there a similar game that’s less complicated?
I tried Farm RPG and didn’t care for it. Similar experience with Harvest Town and Tsuki’s odyssey.
Honestly I can’t recommend buying another game when Stardew is better for less money. I strongly suggest just focusing on crops and making money first, and maybe work the community center goals. When feel more comfortable then you can talk to the npcs then go from there.
Sprout Valley is a very simple and chill farming game.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/japanese-rural-life-adventure/id1634749545
I’ve never played it myself, but this gives off similar vibes. Apple arcade tho
I’ve tried it. It’s more or less the same thing but is worth the try.
There’s the animal crossing pocket camp. It was the mobile version of animal Crossing, but all the IAP are just in the game now it and costs 10 bucks and that’s all you ever pay. It’s very relaxing.
If you have Apple Arcade, maybe Disney Dreamlight Valley? There are other similar ones too under it if you want to give them a try. The caveat is a number of them are locked behind the Apple Arcade sub.
Cozy Grove is under Netflix games if you already have the sub.
Currently I just started a new run of Stardew Valley on iOS, and I figured I'll just run a chill run. A non min-max one. I did a beach farm and I'm doing fine with it. I figured I'll just play it chill this time because I want a chill game not a stressful time management game :)) I already played a lot of farming sims in the past years so I'm done with that :))
I was actually looking for a chill game on iOS, forgot I had stardew, But saw a thread where people were recommending games they feel for the chill/unwiding. I was very very surprised to see Stardew to be the top comments. Because most people stressed themselves out with Stardew minmaxxing. That said, it's all about perspective too I imagine.
And then again, the good part about Stardew on mobile is you can save anytime anywhere (not sure when that became a thing). The needing to sleep to save and being the only way for other devices probably was what pushed people to minmax.
My Time at Portia is also on iOS btw, I haven't played it myself but friends liked it. And by typing up this comment I just realized maybe I should try out My Time at Portia hmmm since I am looking for a chill game. I do have it on Switch.
I would rec Rune Factory 4, Littlewood or Ooblets if they were on iOS but they aren't. All three of them are far more chill for me because of how the time systems are implemented.
Update: Sprout Valley may be what you're looking for. I remember buying it back in 2023 to support the dev too because I like the concept of it plus for similar reasons as yours at the time. But at the time I just wasn't in the mood for a farming sim. Now that I remembered it, maybe I should try it again lol. Back then, when it was like first released I had nitpicks with its controls. I don't know if they're ok now. But reviews look good.
Thanks for the recommendations!
