Overall Faithfulness
The Haikyuu anime is largely faithful to the manga, with some minor adjustments for pacing and time constraints. For example, the Shiratorizawa match in Season 3 had its pacing and flashback sequences slightly altered for better flow [1:1]. The anime generally follows the manga closely but does omit certain scenes, especially during the Tokyo Qualifiers and Season 4, where some minor scenes were skipped
[3:1].
Added and Removed Content
While the anime captures the essence of the manga, there are parts that are cut or adjusted for time and pacing. These often include more personal or emotional moments that may be added back in movie adaptations [1:2]. Additionally, specific details like Asahi's breathing exercises in Season 4 are not explained in the anime
[1:9].
Artistic Differences
Some fans argue that the manga offers a different experience through its artwork. The manga's art style, drenched in black ink with immaculate toning, provides a unique impact that differs from the anime's visual representation [4:1]. While the anime benefits from dynamic motion and soundtrack, the manga excels in conveying facial expressions and emotions
[4:1].
Future Content and Ending
The manga continues beyond where the anime currently ends, offering more insight into the characters' futures [1:3]. For those eager to know what happens next, reading the manga might be preferable as it covers arcs and developments not yet animated
[5:1]. However, some fans suggest waiting for the anime adaptations if you prefer watching over reading
[5:4].
Personal Preferences
Ultimately, whether to choose the manga or anime depends on personal preference. Some readers find the manga more captivating due to its detailed storytelling and art [4:7], while others appreciate the anime's dynamic presentation and soundtrack
[4:2]. If you're new to Haikyuu, starting with the anime might be easier, but switching to the manga can offer a deeper understanding and continuation of the story
[4:6].
Does the manga follow the anime pretty well I just got the first 5 books so I can finally read them but have watched the first 2 seasons.
Just curious because I know sometimes they can go way off. And I'm also super sorry if this has been asked a million times.
There are some parts that are cut in the anime for time & pacing. Mostly parts that are more personal/emotional, so if you’re only concerned about the game then it’s nothing much. Sometimes those parts are added back in in the movie.
I want to mention which parts but I don’t know how to do a spoiler tag on mobile lol.
The anime follows the manga quite closely but I still recommend reading the manga from chapter 1 :)
Well that's my plan, I want to start from the beginning and I'm glad it follows it.
Both are good but the manga has more of their future
Okay cool! Thanks!
I started reading from after shiratorizawa(start of to the top) and it was completely the same i think.
So I'm not sure how they did the first 3 seasons, but it's been the same for season 4 so far, unless I forgot some major ting.
the pacing/flashback sequences of the shiratorizawa match were adjusted slightly in s3 (for the better I think, because the pacing of the shiratorizawa match is basically my single quibble with the manga), and there's a tiny side plot of daichi's rivalry with the basketball club captain that's taken out of the anime but otherwise it follows the manga pretty closely!
That's cool to know.
What chapter does that baseball captain thing happen tho. I wanna see that.
Well I'll start from the beginning to get the little extras that they couldn't include in the show but glad to know it follows the manga
Yea but it’s show Tanaka’s, Kags and more
The anime doesn't explain the 80~100% strength breathing exercises that Asahi does in S4.
Manga supremacy
I mean always. Books are always better personal opinion.
I’ve been considering reading haikyuu although I watch like the first 6 episodes of the anime and thought it just wasn’t for me. Is the manga better than the anime? Is there a chance I’ll enjoy it more?
If the anime wasn't for you, there's a good chance the manga won't be either. The early anime is a very faithful adaptation of the manga, and has a generally pretty similar feel to it.
Manga>>>>>>>anime for one-piece and haikyuu for me
I’d really really consider giving a few more episodes of the anime a shot or going with the manga (since you should be able to get through the first couple of arcs pretty quickly). I think the first third of the first season is by far the hardest part to get through of the entire series. (Narratively speaking, all of the decisions make sense, Hinata needs to be established as incompetent and Kageyama as totally obnoxious for their skill/character growth to feel satisfying, it’s just not as compelling a read/watch as the rest of the series.) I found the three on three practice game and the alumni game pretty cringy the first time round, feeling like they were way too invested in a high school sport. I stuck with it because the reviews were so good. However, give it a handful more episodes and you’ll almost certainly have a complete turnaround and be totally and completely invested in every point and in each of the characters. (Coming from someone who doesn’t like sport and didn’t know any of the roles of volleyball before watching the series, so now regards it among my top 3 favourite manga and anime ever.) If you’re a couple of episodes into the tournament and you’re not liking it, then it probably isn’t for you.
The art style is, but story wise not really. The anime does a good job representing the manga.
Overall, no - the anime is basically a shot-for-shot remake of the manga. For the first three seasons, there is just a small handful of scenes from the manga that never made it into the anime, and that's the only difference.
However, the anime cut out a significant portion of the manga for the Tokyo Qualifiers, and S4 is also slightly less faithful to the manga in the sense that they skip through a lot of the more "minor" scenes. But that all being said, nothing happens in the anime that doesn't happen in the manga.
So i should restart since the beginning or i can just start from the tokyo qualifiers
You can just start from the Tokyo Qualifiers imo
hey I know this question might get asked quite a bit but was just wondering which one to go for and what people prefer for a new reader/watcher?
also is it true that haikyu is ending soon is there an ETA on that?
Personally when I first compared them, I had strongly prefer the anime because of the OST and some small extra stuff the added in, but ever since the animation went a bit downhill in s4 (no offense).
I’ve slowly started to lean towards the manga, mainly because on how epic the new arc is and the fun discussions/theories that comes w it since the manga is ending soon.
i started with the anime but switched over to manga after i ran out of episodes to watch. i still prefer the anime because of all the tiny extra stuff (but again i just have a general preference towards anime) but if you wanna keep going on then perhaps manga might be a better choice
does the manga have the same excitement(?) as the anime? i feel like the anime is so hype-worthy cuz its in literally moving around, reading a fast moving sports scene...idk, wont it feel a bit dull? i dont wanna ruin anything for myself so ive never read it, but sports is a fast moving action sequence, i just feel like anime would be better and that doing so in a manga form would make it feel stale.
please correct me if im wrong! just wanna know ur opinion.
i thought the same abt the action at first as well, thinking that the manga would be “sluggish” and the action scenes would not have as much of an impact as the anime did.
but boyy was i wrong. imo, the manga action scenes are much more captivating than the anime ones. it’s the impact of the art drenched in black ink with immaculate toning—the manga’s art just has a very different feel to it that impacts the reader differently from the anime. the facial expressions and emotions expressed by the characters are much better drawn out in the manga as well, and i feel the reader can connect better with it.
after reading the manga and watching the episodes of the anime adaption, it just felt like the anime was a bit lackluster in comparison. sure, it was nice to see the players in action, but some of the scenes moved so slowly. personally, i like fast paced action sequences, whether it be in manga or anime. and many of the episodes of haikyuu’s anime is slow with conversational fillers, where one character reads the script for thirty seconds and the shot is just panning around them talking. it’s different with the manga though, since you can read at your own pace (and i do so swiftly for action purposes).
try out the manga, i assure you it’ll hit different! the art style may differ quite a bit from the anime, but i like that aspect of it, it gives the manga it’s unique quality.
I just started the manga but I like it more I don’t know why
You’ll run out of the anime soon enough but the manga you will be reading for a while.
I watched the anime first but I would say the manga is better (opinionated ✌️ just started reading it and I absolutely love it)
i wanted to read the manga but with haikyuu vs the little giant i didn’t want to spoil myself to see who one the match so im wondering if i should wait or just read now
I just recently read the manga, picking up where the anime left off and I feel I might’ve enjoyed it more than the anime.
What volume/chapter did you start with? I'm thinking of doing this too but idk where to even start lol
I think i started around 290 but I hear that the anime cut some stuff out as early as 190
You need to 100% read the Manga. If you keep waiting for the animation to finish then you will keep waiting for years. It took like 4+ years for the movie to come after season 4. Don't wait. How is it spoiling anime when the manga is the original source? I can guarantee you you will enjoy the manga more than the animation and wouldn't regret reading it first especially because well i wouldn't say it. Starting from volume 34
I think it could be worth waiting. The movie is going to have to cut a lot, which could make it less enjoyable if you were to watch it for the first time knowing what the match is supposed to be.
If the Nekoma movie is any indication, the next movie will also be a bastardisation of the manga. So yes, you should read the manga. The movie also likely isn’t coming out until at least late 2026/2027
Manga is better honestly, even in the shitorizawa match the order sequence at the beginning of how it was scored is different in the manga vs the anime.
The anime is all time (my 2nd best anime I’ve watched outside of jjk) but the manga (where the anime ends; so far) part of the story is even better somehow
The other day I ordered the complete haikyuu manga on vindet and upon opening it I realized that compared to the manga I have they are much bigger there are differences and I paid €122 for everything he scammed me or I got a deal
The size is a big differenhahahahhahahahh
ur so dumb (i had the exact same thought b4 looking at the comments)
Well look inside and compare for yourself
mf read and tell us
Posting to follow
What matters is what's inside. Plus one seems to have a hard cover that the other. It's just suppliers sometimes.
hi! i’m looking into buying the haikyuu manga, but i want to know if it’s worth it first lol! is it the same as the show? are there many differences that make the manga better? i’m new to manga so it would be my first, but haikyuu is one of my favourite shows and i’ve been considering buying for a while now. i’m broke asf lmao and don’t want to waste money, but i doubt it’ll be a waste anyways! just wanted to check :)
I think the manga is a few levels above the anime, so yes.
For storytelling purposes, manga is superior no doubt.
You will likely be able to find the manga through your library, or if you have ~$3 every month, you can get Shonen Jump (both an app and a desktop version through Viz Media), and it's all on there as well!
This, the shonen jump app is the way to go. As a bonus, you can read some other cool mangas too, and once you're caught up, the "last 3 chapters" are always free to read ;)
The manga is great and goes beyond the anime/movies and has a lot more content. I would advise against jumping from the end of the movie to the following chapter though, as the art evolves a lot throughout the manga and the difference might feel very jarring.
I suggest reading online first! That way you can decide you want to buy or not. Also try checking your public library if they have any.
I read Demon Slayer online and I’m saving up for the boxed set.
ooh i didn’t know you could read online! tysm!!
You’re welcome! I don’t know if there’s legal websites to read manga online so the one I use probably isn’t.
try it on Comick first. It has the full manga coloured too, I read it there and it was a sublime reading experience
try mangafire! it's what I read mangas on. lmk if it goes well!
Yea its considered pirating iirc but the biggest site is mangasee123
Most anime are watered down versions of the manga, Haikyuu being no different. Meaning that yes the manga is worth it.
After a couple of years of being severely depressed I am now trying to rediscover the things that used to bring me joy when I was younger. Haikyuu is one of them and I am just wondering if y'all prefer the anime or the manga. When I was younger I watched the anime but theres a couple new seasons these days I think, and I'm just wondering if I should skip rewatching the anime and go straight to the manga cuz I obviously wanna see all of them grown up now that I am too haha
Anime up to the end of season 3. Season 4 covers the best match in the series and unfortunately manga did it 5 times better
Story is better in manga, yes. But also there is no godlike music in manga and you can't hear incredible voice actors. Just being able to hear Tanaka yelling "LEFTOOO" makes anime more enjoyable than manga. You can always read manga later for the story.
I'd say read after season 3 first to get the full story and nuance and then watch those parts in anime too to see it animated and with voices and music. I agree a story like Haikyuu!! it's better in anime form, but after season 3 they just cut and rush through too many things that I consider important, and I'm pretty sure it's gonna be worse in the movies (haven't seen the movie yet, but I've read somewhere how many things they didn't cover and I thing they're too much).
it doesn't since the animation is really not that great and pacing is kinda all over the place
ok tysm🙏🙏
I would say watch the anime then pick up the manga after. I love the manga for the future but personally I find it a lot more encapsulating to watch it. The action scenes hit harder and draw me in. Then you get an idea of the characters voice characteristics which makes distinguishing their personalities in my head more fun.
I'd suggest watching the anime first. It's really good. You can read the manga after but definitely anime first. Season four has its ups and downs but I'd still recommend watching first then reading after.
Both. Always both lol.
Anime + OVAs + Movies. Then manga. Repeat as many times as you want.
The movies and anime are great, but if you want to go more into the future then manga is the way to go, or if you’re a collector.
MOVIES?????
wtf happened in the last 6 years bruh💔
I heard there are slight differences
I seriously hope you don't actually expect someone to list every single difference. The anime (like all animes, naturally) isn't a 1:1 adaptation. It removes scenes, adds scenes, changes scenes and restructures them.
Manga is like comic. Anime is like cartoon.
Ok but seriously from what I've heard, the wording is a bit different and the fights are different as well but that's all I'm aware of.
"Slight differences" that's the most you need to know, really
manga is in book or some shit but anime is in video
Is this a joke?
There's some extra scenes in the Manga - like Stain showing up in Tartarus - and sometimes subtle differences in fights. I know that the Midoriya vs Muscular fight is a little different in the manga (not big differences, i believe how Midoriya actually first encounters him, as well as when Muscular breaks his arm - he's a lot closer before going to punch him again).
There's also a scene with Midoriya and Bakugou in the manga on their way to fight All Might.
but the anime tends to expand on things. It also has the OVA's which I believe aren't in the manga except for the All Might Rising one.
Also characters might be changed subtly - like Iida's eye colour. It's red in the manga and blue in the anime.
I just finished the anime (boarded the hype train late) and my thirst for this series isn't settled, I know the anime finishes around chapter 218 so my question is if I start reading the manga will I be confused, is there things that I missed out if I go directly to chapter 218
Same here, the anime is so good but everyone dislikes the current arc in the manga and it seems like the end is near for the manga
It’s understandable tbh, the manga after the tournament arc finishes drops massively in plot quality. Honestly I don’t see them even finishing the tournament arc in the anime.
Well as the anime goes , I think it left off on a high note and should see a new season but that might be the last season
The manga is sexier
Indeed. The manga for the arc is great along with the actual competition. Everything after can drop
Fuck yea the art is absolutely nut worthy
Of course it is! It was >!drawn by a (ex-)hentai artist!!<
>!There will always be lewds seeping through the art.!<
I went from the anime to the manga somewhere around the beginning of the train arc and it was pretty much a smooth transition
Lol I love how people are saying the manga is great but if you go to another post it’s like “Holy fuck this manga is trash, why is someone using tnt to cook a fucking cake.” Lol anyways the newer chapters are shit but everything else is how you’d expect it, actual cooking. Anyways it’s not as bad as you think when I say using tnt to cook but yes, you should read the manga.
I don’t think you’ll be confused.
But the anime does leave out a lot of interactions from the cast. There also a bunch of fun volume extras with little doodles/comics and also two short extra chapters (scanlations have it at the end of chapter 182 and 183) about how Rindou and Eishi became friends.
