Haikyuu Season Release Order

TL;DR

  • Watch the main seasons in order: Season 1, Season 2, Season 3, and then Season 4 (split into two parts as "To the Top" and "To the Top Part 2").
  • OVAs can be watched after their respective seasons.
  • Movies are mostly recaps and can be skipped.

Main Series Order

The main series of Haikyuu should be watched in chronological order starting with Haikyuu!! Season 1, followed by Season 2, Season 3 (Karasuno High vs. Shiratorizawa Academy), and finally Season 4, which is split into two parts titled "To the Top" and "To the Top Part 2" [1:1][3:2].

OVAs and Their Placement

There are several OVAs associated with Haikyuu that can add to the viewing experience. The "Arrival of Lev" OVA can be watched before or after Season 2, though some viewers prefer watching it afterward to preserve character reveals [1:2][1:3]. The "Land vs. Sky" and "Path of the Ball" OVAs are recommended between Seasons 3 and 4 [1:2]. These OVAs cover manga canon material not included in the main seasons [4:2].

Movies

Haikyuu movies are primarily recaps of the TV series with a few additional scenes. They include matches from previous seasons without the episodic breaks. While they aren't necessary for understanding the main plot, some fans watch them for the extra content, which can often be found on YouTube [2:3][5:8].

Upcoming Content

There is mention of upcoming content being released as films rather than traditional TV episodes. This includes a film covering the next Karasuno match and a Fukurodani match presented as an OVA [5:1]. However, details about these releases are still emerging, and it's unclear if they will be part of a new season or standalone projects [5:10].

As you can see I've gone to Google before but many of the things it says to watch aren't in the site that I'm watching them. If you're too lazy to look that's alright but Google for example says to watch : Haikyuu!! Vs Akaten (Vs failing grades OVA) Which the site doesn't have, but the site has : Haikyuu!! Movie 2: Shousha to Haisha Which Google does not mention. If someone could help me I would appreciate very much. Btw the site that I'm using is 9anime

The Haikyuu movies are recap movies of season one through three. You can skip those for the most part. They got a few extra scenes but you can find those on youtube.

  • Season 1 to 3 simply follow each other.

  • You can watch the "arrival of Lev" OVA before season 2 and the "falling grades" OVA after episode 4 (or five?) of season 2, or simply watch both after season 2.

  • After season 3 (but before 4) there are two OVAs: "Land vs. Sky" and "Path of the Ball". Sometimes they are just called "Land vs. Sky 1" and "Land vs. Sky 2" as they are connected.

  • After that, it's season 4 ("to the top part 1 and 2")

Not sure about the picture dramas and other OVAs and stuff.

That's all there is to it for now. They are adapting the rest of Haikyuu in two movies. The first one will be released this year (2024), those won't be recap movies but they will each adapt way too many chapters of the rest of the manga.

The general consensus seems to be that people should wait and watch the first movie and then decide if they want to dive into the manga after that or wait for the final movie. That way they can experience the movie without preconceptions and enjoy it and afterwards read the manga (and enjoy discovering the extra details that had to be cut) instead of reading the manga and then being grumpy that some random scene that they very much liked got cut so all of the content would fit into a single movie.

I don't really like the suggestion of watching the lev OVA before season 2 considering its non canon, and ruins the actual reveal of him during season 2. So yeah, after season 2 works.

I remember watching it before season 2 and it fit rather well as an introduction but that makes sense too. I simply never had that association of him "being revealed" because of that.

I swear some of the OVAs are canon right? I was manga reader after S3 but I thought the OVAs covered some of the matches that were in the manga but they didn't have time for in the main seasons.

Just ignore the OVAs and movies. OVAs u can watch after finishing the main series and movies its upto u since they're just recaps.

Incase u still have doubts,

  1. Haikyuu!!
  2. Haikyuu!! Second Season
  3. Haikyuu!! Karasuno High vs Shiratorizawa Academ
  4. Haikyuu!! To The Top
  5. Haikyuu!! The Final Duology (not out yet)

Super confused on Episode/ Season Order on Crunchy; Can anyone explain? Season 4-

Posted by [deleted] · in r/haikyuu · 4 years ago

So I just finished Season 1 and 2 on Netflix before I started watching Season 3 and 4 on Crunchyroll.

It looks like Season 5 “Movies” is old episodes from season 1 & 2?

Then we have Season 6, which I thought was Nekoma vs Kurosono, but, they are playing Fukadani in the Semi-Finals?

Then I go to an episode guide and it looks like Season 6 is older than Season 4?

So what gives? Are there no more episodes after season 4?

The movies on crunchyroll are the Haikyuu "movies". They're the big end of season matches from season 2 and 3. (Aoba Johsai and Shiratorizawa) without the flashbacks and stops between episodes. Only thing I'd recommend watching them for is for the 2 min endings they have for the losing teams that isn't in the original seasons.

2 upvotes on reddit
akutaen · 4 years ago

I would consider Haikyuu to only have 4 seasons. But since they're broken up from seasons 1,2,3,4 on crunchyroll, they're listed under a new tab (season 5,6).

I would watch season 1, season 2, season 3, season 6, then season 4 to make the most sense. Season 6 is Nekoma path leading up to nationals.

There are no new episodes after Season 4. Season 4 just finished.

The movies are basically recaps with extra scenes added in. The correct order to watch haikyuu is

•Season 1 •Arrival of lev OVA(optional,introduces character you meet 4 episodes later just with more of their personality) •Season 2 •Season 3 •Land vs Air OVa(manga canon material) •Season 4 •Season 4 part 2 (starts airing next month)

Hello, r/Haikyuu!

First of all, thank you for recommending this anime—I haven’t enjoyed an anime like this in a long time. I’ve been completely hooked and have watched everything from Season 1 to To the Top Part 2, including the OVAs. However, I’m a bit confused about the movies. What should I watch next?

im working on solving this for you. just a heads up, i do have to watch the OVAs to determine where they fall so you won't get yer answer too quickly. luckily the OVAs don't have many episodes to them, so it shouldn't take too awful long. i should be able to get you an answer by the end of the day (EST). if not today, then tomorrow almost definitely :)

It's that time!

Before I start listing I want to say I did get all the movies and OVAs from Shiro. I am in no way promoting illegal anime streaming sites, I just thought I should tell you where I got them from. Now, lets get into it.

  1. Haikyuu!!

This is just Haikyuu!! season 1.
2. Haikyuu!! Movie 1: Owari to Hajimari
Optional to watch as it's just a recap movie of the first part of season 1.
      3. Haikyuu!! Movie 2: Shousha to Haisha
Optional, as it just recaps the Interhigh preliminaries.
       4. Haikyuu!! Second Season

  1. Episodes 1-2 of Haikyuu!! OVA

Contains more details on what happened in the time between the Interhigh preliminaries and the training camp.
        6. Haikyuu!! Movie 3: Sainou to Sense
Optional, as the movie just recaps what happened in season 2.
       7. Haikyuu!!: Karasuno Koukou vs Shiratorizawa Gakuen Koukou
       8. Haikyuu!! Movie 4: Concept no Tatakai
Also optional, as its just a recap of the Karasuno High vs Shiratorizawa Academy match.
       9. Haikyuu!! Riku vs. Kuu
      10. Episode 3 of Haikyuu!! OVA
A quick review of what happened in the Spring Preliminaries and season 3. I recommend watching before starting season 4, so you can have a short recap.

  11. Haikyuu!! To the Top
      12. Haikyuu!! To the Top 2nd Season

I hope this helped lmao, I spent so long watching OVAs and movies to do this.

The movies are just recaps of the tv anime, so they're not really required viewing. I think the movies have a couple of fun extra scenes, but you don't miss much of substance by skipping the movies altogether.

But if you do want to watch the movies too, I think the first two movies are recaps of the first season, the third movie covers the final match of the second season and the fourth movie covers the third season.

I wouldn't recommend watching the movies before having seen the full seasons, since you'll miss a lot.

You don't really need to watch the movies, they're just recaps with extra scenes. I don't think they're even fully subbed in English.

So S1 -> Nekoma OVA -> S2 -> search Aoba Johsai extra scenes from the 2nd recap movie -> S3 -> search Shiratorizawa extra scenes from the 3rd recap movie

There's an OVA that expands the studying scene from S2 but it's mostly padding it out, not really crucial watching

Why did Haikyuu of all things get stuck with the most confusing and irritating production decisions. Like you had this acclaimed fantastic anime and decided to see the project through in this kind of fashion? It’s just bizarre

107 upvotes on reddit
X
XerGR · 6 months ago

I think it’s almost 100% timeline. They don’t have the budget (in terms of time) to fully commit to a season of Haikyuu rather they try to slowly movie at a time do it.

Or if they’re 5head 200iq are doing it to absolutely milk the series dry. The movies are driving a fuckload of sales still

7 upvotes on reddit
Altruistic-Chapter2 · 6 months ago

It's probably a mix between production overload and budgeting. Lately the anime industry is so full of productions (too many, actually) that studios are having a hard time handling them all. Doing 24 ep season is getting difficult and while Haikyuu brings in the money, there's probably other projects coming in and waiting to be done. So it might be they're going down this route bc in terms of time management is more doable and they can do high quality stuff, since usually full-length features get higher budgets.

>Why did Haikyuu of all things

Honestly you would be saying the same thing for any anime that you enjoy. For example AoT was so popular yet Wit gave it to Mappa and after few seasons Mappa decided to turn it into long episodes/movies. OPM was also popular and strong yet S2 went to a new studio and S3 is also made by another studio. Berserk is so well written and one of the most beloved manga of all time yet with all its adaptations it never got a faithful one. Slam Dunk was critically acclaimed yet it was decided to get a movie that covers the final arc only. Some times those decisions don't make sense and it sucks.

11 upvotes on reddit
Ambitious-Win3766 · 6 months ago

But with AOT, all the delays aside, they did not cut any content, infact they changed so it enhances some moments. I was hoping Haikyuu could stick the landing prooduction wise, But the movier felt like watching a highlight reel, it did not have the emotional highs or lows that an episodic release would have, just feels badman

Spoilers.

They often like to do the thing where >!when a time-skip occurs they say the anime ended but have a sequel that comes out with a slightly different trademark. So we will probably get "Haikyuu: Professionals," or something after that will be viewed as a separate project despite adapting the same manga.!<

I'm a bit confused about the watching order for part of the Haikyuu series

After season 3 there's the two OVA's, Land vs Air and The Path of the Ball. Then season 4. Then The Dumpster Battle movie.

You don't necessarily need to watch the two OVA's, but they do give more information.

EDIT: The OVA's are still showing what happens in the manga. They aren't "original."

The dumpster battle film is the most recent adaptation of the story unlike the other films which are recaps, so next is simply season 4 and then the dumpster battle. There might be OVAs in between season 3 and 4 though im not 100% sure.
