TL;DR Mortal Kombat is a fighting game series with rich lore that spans multiple timelines and includes complex character backstories. The series began in 1992, and its narrative has evolved significantly over the years.
Origins and Evolution
The Mortal Kombat series started in 1992, developed by Midway Games, and quickly became known for its intense combat and graphic violence. Over time, the series expanded to include a deep lore involving multiple realms, characters with unique backgrounds, and intricate storylines [3:1]. The original timeline included games up to Mortal Kombat Armageddon, after which the series was rebooted with Mortal Kombat 9, introducing a new timeline
[5:1].
Character Lore
The lore of Mortal Kombat is heavily centered around its diverse cast of characters, each with their own histories and motivations. Characters like Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero have been central to the narrative since the beginning. Videos from channels like "History Behind The Warrior" provide detailed explanations of individual character stories [4:1]
[4:2].
Timeline Reboot
Mortal Kombat 9 marked a significant shift in the series' narrative, effectively rebooting the timeline and retelling key events from the earlier games [5:4]. This reboot allowed for the introduction of new elements and changes to established lore, though some fans criticize it for not fully explaining deeper aspects of the story
[5:6].
Expanded Universe
Beyond the games, Mortal Kombat's universe has been explored through comics, movies, and animated series. The Malibu Comics series offered an alternative take on the lore during the Midway era [3:3]. Recent films have also aimed to capture the essence of the game's storyline, providing new interpretations of classic characters
[4].
Resources for Learning
For those interested in diving into Mortal Kombat's lore, there are numerous resources available. YouTube channels like Tabmok99 offer comprehensive insights into the series' history [5:2]. Additionally, websites like Outworld.MK host detailed write-ups on the original timeline
[2]. These resources can help newcomers and long-time fans alike understand the complexities of Mortal Kombat's narrative.
and what the fuck this is hilarious I didn’t know Mortal Kombat had this much lore and I’m actually laughing at some parts lmao I now kinda regret never caring about the story, my first game was MK9 I even have it on steam, just bought 11 and having a blast on the steam deck!
Ooooh, do you have a link to the video?
I know (most) of the lore, I grew up with MK and I love that there's so much story in this universe. But I always enjoy listening to people talking about it too!
Im guessing it's ClementJ64's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uONBue4gt_M&t=9063s&pp=ygUSTW9ydGFsIEtvbWJhdCBsb3Jl0gcJCbIJAYcqIYzv
This is it yes!
If it's the video I'm thinking of - that video is incorrect on a lot of things.
>my first game was MK9
That game is the beginning of the end on quality lore. The ruination started there.
I've been watching loredump cover the series. I guess all these years I kinda just accepted the mk lore. But hearing people who've never played learn about it, really puts into perspective how Ludacris it is
It's Clement's lore video isn't it? Haven't watched it but I dig his street fighter and Tekken videos.
Yes it is
616 has mortal kombat Monday each week but has long history videos that are really good
I originally wrote this up on TYM, it's now being hosted on Outworld.MK.

I was lucky enough to get to consult with guys like Razor, Chrome and Shad on this so I consider it fairly authoritative. Figured I'd stick it in here.

Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to give it read. Hopefully tomorrow.
IMPORTANT QUESTION:
Is Mako Iwamatsu narrating?
Prized possesions imo. Loved them as a kid. Just wish I took better care of them back then so I didn't need to spend so much getting all the mint versions back. 😅
You and me both ;)
I read through scans of the Malibu comics every couple of years. The art is all over the place but I love the character designs.
it was a fun time :)
I just wish they were available in the actual game because otherwise you're sol
I have a couple of physical issues
and I have plenty of mental ones
Put Grum in a game.
Mortal Kombat in Midway times✨✨✨
I got Mortal Kombat 11 off of the PS store a few days ago. Love the game so far, used to play as a kid on PS1 & it brings back memories. I'm curious to learn about the history of the Characters. When they were introduced in the franchise, what Story they have & how they relate to the game. Especially with the movie coming out I'd like to learn the history behind Mortal Kombat, without having to do alot of reading. (Can't read for long periods of time) anyone know of any videos maybe? YouTube or anything?

I mostly learnt from just playing and reading, but I've watched some of his stuff and enjoyed it
Cheers
Just play the story mode
History Behind The Warrior on YouTube uploads videos of explaining characters stories.
Legend
I haven't really gotten to know these games, and yes, I haven't played any yet, but I wanna learn some lore first.
Also, what game is best to start out with?
Check Tabmok99 on Youtube. Dude's a walking MK wikipedia.
Best game to start with is whatever you have access to.
MK1 is a fresh start, it’s now technically the ‘first game’ because Liu reset the timeline.
But I get what you mean about wanting to learn all the lore because all 4 NRS timeline games connect
I will find a video and once I do I will edit this comment with a link
Start with mk9 if possible, it's easy to understand in my opinion and retells the main events of the first games
It is merely a retelling of key events and nothing else. It fails miserably to explain the deeper lore. It also relies heavily on people knowing the lore from the first timeline to fill in gaps that aren't addressed.... and relies on people knowing it to understand Raiden's changes to the timeline.
Terrible narrative, overall.
Raiden consulted the elder gods. They didn't help.
That's 60% of it right there
For MK1 to 7 you could youtube videos showing the endings and cutscenes i/a.
MK8 is actually MK vs DC which is fun but not canon.
From MK9 onwards it's easy as you can almost literally watch each game's story mode like a movie.
We can assume MK1 takes place in 1992, since it's suggested the series kinda follows their release dates, especially with MKDA explicitly being 10 years after MK1. However that doesn't mean every game is in its release year.
MK2 takes place right after 1 as we see in the comic, so 2 is also in 92.
MK3 is not as clear. It's probably at least a year after 1, but we don't know when exactly. Release date doesn't seem like a great option either, seeing as 3 years after the events of 1 and 2 seems a little too long. If you want my best guess, I say 93 or 94, about a year after 1 and 2. It does have to take place at least 2 years before MK4 though, because of Scorpion's MKDA bio.
MK4 again is not clear. Again, it has to be at least 2 years after MK3. As for a maximum, it can't happen after 98, seeing as in 98 Johnny starred in 24 Karate Gold, but he was dead between 3 and 4. So putting this information together, 3 is at the earliest 92 and at the latest 96, and 4 is at the earliest 94 and at the latest 98.
MKDA is pretty clear that it happens 10 years after MK1. So 2002. EZ.
MKD is a bit of a mess. As for the events that happen in the present, it's just 2002 again since it starts right after MKDA. However the Konquest mode really makes no sense in terms of timeline. Things happen too early or too late. Time passes too fast or too quickly. Things just don't match up, so I won't bother going through it.
MKA really could be any time. Obviously it's after Deception, but it could be right after or quite a few years after, there's really nothing to make that clear.
MK9 goes back to MK1, so obviously that starts in 92. However it seems a bit more spread apart than it may appear. It initially seems like each act of the story happen after each other rather quickly, however in MK11 Raiden from the past says he's been receiving visions for months, which means the MK2 act is months after the MK1 act, so the MK3 act may be a bit later too. But for simplicity I'm just gonna say all of MK9 happens in 92.
MK10 is where things get very difficult. So it starts 2 years after MK9, so Johnny's chapter is set in 94. Then there's the timeskip. It is not consistent how long the timeskip is, and the game can't seem to make its mind up on 20, 23 or 25 years. So there isn't really a right answer here, you just have to decide which number makes the most sense to you. The bios mostly all go with 25, and that makes the most sense for Cassie's age, so I will say the timeskip is 25 years, putting MK10's present in 2019. The comics are another timeline nightmare. The flashback in the game where Mileena's rebellion starts says 5 years ago, however in the comic Kotal says the war has been already going on for 10 years. I'll just go with what the game says even though that might not make any sense, so the rebellion starts in 2014. That means the comic must take place in 2014 - it can't take place later because Scorpion and Sub-Zero have not become allies yet, but this also happens in a 5 years ago flashback.
MK11 is set 2 years after 10, so 2021.
As you can there are a lot of issues in terms of continuity with this series, so this is just my best attempt to make sense of it.
You could mention that in MK4 Raiden becomes an Elder God in his ending (that is canon) and he says something like "I choose Fujin to guide the mortals in the next millenium" - suggesting they are in the late 90s.
Really good answer.
Although it's worth noting that the "MK1-4" portion of MK9, MKX, and MK11, really don't look like they're set in 1992. The Special Forces-aligned characters just tend to look like they're from whatever year the game came out in.
I have to imagine that as we get further and further away from the 90's, MK is just gonna adopt a sliding timescale like Marvel, DC, the Simpsons, etc, and the year of the tournament is just gonna be moved up to match reality.
Yeah that's a good point
That's the best explanation of the timeline. You did a great job!
Thank you :)
I consider myself a very longtime fan of this franchise who has a better-than-casual and fairly in-depth knowledge of the story and characters of Mortal Kombat - But that said - Yeah, I've never devoted a lot of detailed thought to the timeline of events (beyond the fact I knew it was a mess, so I didn't really try to make sense of it, lol) - SO ANYWAY - I didn't know most of this - So big kudos to this guy. That's a more in-depth answer than I'd have expected someone to give on the matter, and was an interesting read. High five.
Thanks. MK is certainly a mess and I have been driven insane a few times trying to make sense of things lol
I came here to write all that and you saved me. Cheers and thanks!
I think the trilogy of each different game takes place in the time they were released so mk1-3d era in the 90s then nrs era takes place in 2011 then I think it ends in 2019 might be completely wrong though
It can’t end in 2019 if it starts in 2011 as there is a 27 year time skip between 9 and X
I’m going to leave this to the Giga Nerds of this sub but I have to commend OP on coming up with this question, I’ll have a field day reading the various replies!
Twenty years since the best Mortal Kombat game to grace the franchise and the planet released to the public. I pray every day Netherrealm remasters this exquisite piece of entertainment. 🙏🏾
No. Not a remaster. We need a full blown sequel.
Shaolin Monks II
The story should lead up to the opening of Deadly Alliance. Twist ending, you were actually playing as Shang Tsung and Quan Chi and you have to kill Liu Kang.
And Kung Lao 😭
And Johnny Cage
And Sonya
Imagine catching hands from Liu Kang and Kung Lao lol
You couldn’t pick a worse duo to have to fight from Earthrealm.
In need of a remaster
Truth
ASAP 🙌🏾
BRING
THIS
SHIT
BACK!!!!
Unpopular opinion: it's perfect the way it is and doesn't need a remaster. I don't trust NRS, like, at all. I also don't understand people chasing a pretty picture for games that are already more superior comparing to everything that has come out recently.
Is there any mention anywhere in the lore of the first mortal kombat tournament, not the first in the games, the first ever.
Don't think so. The earliest mentions of the great kung lao state that he one the tenth tournament after earthrealm won the previous nine. Was that the first nine tournaments? No one knows because it is so ancient. Probably a whole century before liu kang was even born.
Do you mean a millennium? I believe they hold MK tournaments once every 50 years. Liu Kang won what would have been the 10th in a row for Outworld, which would mean The Great King Lao preceded Liu Kang by about 450 years. Kung Lao had won what also would have been the 10th straight for Outworld so the very first MK tournament that we know of would have been about a thousand years before the events of the first game at the very least.
Could you point me to a source for this? I don’t disbelieve you; I’d just like to see it in the canon. Thank you 🙏
Ya millennium
we are about to learn about it
I don't think it is ever specifically talked about, but it had to have happened at some point.
And in few days, the demand for a sequel would turn 20yrs too!
A friend and I skipped school and spent all day playing this. It froze rite before the final boss fights.
Did y’all ever go back and finish it ?
Fuck I feel old god damn
Time to take your pills
Was hyped when I 1st seen the trailer, game did not disappoint 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Would love for a ps classics release like they did with the Jak series.
Howdy everyone! I'm looking to get back into Mortal Kombat. I played the PS2 games a lot growing up and am looking to replay the entirety of the PS2 Mortal Kombat catalogue soon, but I also want to get the story down so I know what happened before the PS2 games. What would be the best video or videos for this? Ideally fun to watch and informative. There are a ton of them on YouTube, and I can't choose haha. So I'd rather hear what fans think of them. Thanks!
To me, this is the most comprehensive lore guide on the web. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uONBue4gt_M
If you want pure factual information, the ONLY source is NetherKast.
No one else gets it right. People will try to recomment History Behind the Warrior or 4thSnake, but both of them are wrong on a lot. HBTW just reads the flawed wiki for his information. And I've seen 4thSnake flat out reject information that's been in the game, because his personal head-canon doesn't like it.
4thsnake does usually state it when things don’t make sense to him personally, showing that he’s at least aware of his own limitations and biases.
