TL;DR
Mortal Kombat 1 does not introduce any new playable characters, focusing instead on reimagining existing ones from previous games [3:2].
Roster Composition
Mortal Kombat 1 is notable for its lack of entirely new characters in the main roster. The game focuses on established characters, revamping their stories and appearances to fit the rebooted universe [5:1]. This approach allows NetherRealm Studios (NRS) to explore the depths of existing characters, providing them with new backstories and designs
[5:8]. Some fans appreciate this focus on familiar faces, while others miss the excitement of discovering new characters
[4:1].
Notable Reimaginings
While there are no new characters per se, several characters have been significantly reimagined. For instance, Raiden, Li Mei, and Tanya have undergone changes that make them feel like fresh additions despite their historical presence in the franchise [4:1]. Additionally, Floyd, a non-playable character, serves as a nod to classic secret fights and incorporates powers from various ninjas
[4:9].
Potential for Future Additions
There is speculation and hope among fans that new characters might be introduced through future DLC packs or updates. Characters like Harumi are mentioned as potential candidates for future inclusion [5:7]. This possibility keeps the community engaged and hopeful for new content beyond the current roster.
Community Reception
The reception to the absence of new characters has been mixed. While some players appreciate the return of fan-favorite characters and the opportunity to see them in new lights [4:2], others express disappointment at the lack of newcomers
[4:3]. Discussions often highlight the balance between nostalgia and innovation, with some players preferring a roster filled with beloved characters and others yearning for fresh faces
[5:8].
In summary, Mortal Kombat 1's approach to character selection emphasizes reimagining established characters rather than introducing new ones, allowing for deeper exploration of the franchise's rich history while leaving room for potential future expansions.
Will mk1 not have any new characters? I haven’t seen anyone say anything about new characters even though we’ve gotten new characters in almost every game
I'm expecting 2 new characters at most. They're probably trying to stick with familiar characters for the reboot and just retell the origins.
Yeah me too. I’m not expecting many new characters but it was just weird to me that I’ve not seen any leaks say that there will be new characters and I’ve not seen people talk about new characters
Well, if you've been looking at leaks and you don't see new characters it's probably true at this point. There's a leak that was proven true that I've been avoiding, and if you're privy to the leaks you probably already spoiled yourself to the starting roster. They're pulling an MK9 and revamping the story.
We seem to be getting more post Trilogy characters that haven't been playable since Armageddon reimagined. I guess that can kinda be like the equivalent of getting new characters this time.
I don’t want to sound upset or ungrateful that we are getting more post trilogy characters. I’m actually really excited about it!
I think they're going to be treating 3D era characters as the new ones. Been close to 20 years without most of them being playable.
I asked this too - people said "why would they create new characters when there's so many to choose from?"
But like, they HAVE had new characters every game 🤷
Yeah! They’ve had them every game except for mk9 (I think) so it’s just weird to me that they would not have a new character. The most I’ve seen is people saying they might add a new pink colored ninja
Mk9 had cyber Subzero. I guess it counts as new
Other than the DLC characters, I don't think we'll be getting any new faces. I actually wanted a mostly clean slate with this release to see them test the boundaries of their creativity when it comes to making new kombatants. But if this is a way to establish this new universe and then, maybe with Kombat Pack 2, give us some new faces, I wouldn't be upset.
I hope we’ll get new characters
The main roster in MK1 has been fire since they cherry picked some of the fan favourites from the history of MK (minus Jade 😅). That said, we eventually got some newcomers through kameos and secret levels. What do you folks think about them and would you like to see them in the main roster in future installments?
Bo and floyd instantly became fan favourites while Janet is just kinda chilling in the corner of the kameo screen
But honestly we need someone newcomers in the main roster, no special forces taking half the spots is nice i would like someone new, harumi's alive so i want her for KP3
It's weird, because Janet is in invasions and she acts essentially the same as Johnny. She isn't that much smaller, either, if at all. I don't think it'd make a whole lot of difference to add her.
I just wish Janet was a skin as well as a kameo.
I'm not too fond of gender swaps tbh, but she would be much more fun than the Jean Claude Van Damme skin. His voice acting is worse than Nitara 😂 At least Janet's actor seems to have fun voicing her
I'm fine with this gender swap, mostly because it's explicitly from a different timeline where Johnny is a woman. If she replaced regular Johnny, that'd suck, but she's a fun addition for an alternate universe pick.
Fr they even have a model ready with Johnny moves cause you can fight her in Invasions
I don't think Janet counts, it literally id just an alternative Johnny cage. Madam Bo is odd because gameplay wise.she is half Bo Rai Cho and half turns you into Bo Rai Cho, while personality wise they aren't all that similar aside from being the mentors of the shaolin monk duo, I don't know if we will ever see a time with both Madam Bo and Bo Rai Cho together in the same game. And Floyd is cool, I hope he's a new ninja with light/refraction/rainbow powers and not a rebranding of chameleon, though I wouldn't blame them for it, having two different characters with the same name damn near, the same gimmick, and they look the same is just confusing as shit and Khameleon is more relevant
Khameleon uses all female powers. Floyd gets the males.
How sick would it be to have Khameleon use Jade, Kitana, Mileena, maybe Frost and Skarlet. Then Floyd have Smoke, Sub, Scorpion, Ermac, Reptile, Noob. Or some combo of those cause that’s a lot honestly.
khameleon gets female ninja powers, chameleon gets male ninja powers. they’ve appeared together in a game before
>don't know if we will ever see a time with both Madam Bo and Bo Rai Cho together in the same game.
I definitely gonna root for Madam Bo if they ever fight
Floyd will get his own moveset when he becomes playable, it happened with Reptile, Smoke, Noob and Jade, people need to remember he is a reference go the secret fights of the klassic games, which is why he has a mix of the other ninjas powers
I just think Floyd ended up looking so fuckin cool. With the colors and crystal stuff and his energy.
Would love madame Bo to be playable. There’s a Twitter thread that I see every now and then about how fighting games have no old lady fighters
I know there are still more trailers to come out but what do you all think about them adding new original characters in MK1? Since it is a reimaging of the story from the beginning, do you think it's less likely that they'll add completely new characters? I'm not considering guest characters as new in this case.
It’s already been confirmed there will be no new characters
Damn, I obviously missed that. Make sense all things considered
It’s definitely welcomed this time around. They already have too many characters so best to go back and revamp the existing characters!
I don't think they are going to introduce new characters, keep in mind that with this reboot NRS has like 50 characters that they can change however they wants to fit the story.
I know they rebooted a bunch of 3d characters but I do wish we had a new character or two. Probably an unpopular opinion I know
Raiden, Li Mei and Tanya might as well be brand new characters for how much they actually resemble previous versions.
But yeah, my biggest problem with the roster has always been the lack of new characters. It baffles me when I see people calling this the best roster of the NRS era when there is not a single newcomer until Floyd who isn't even playable.
It baffles me when I see people calling this the best roster of the NRS era
I only speak for myself, but I finally got Reiko, Tanya, Quan Chi, Kenshi, Havik, Nitara, Li Mei and Sareena in a single game's roster after nearly 20 years, plus the majority of the rest of the roster is MKII, a decent amout of MK3 reps, the male ninjas are all here for those that wanted those ninjas...and we also got Takeda, Geras and kameo Ferra.
Only thing that would have made this roster better for me would have been playable Sareena, Mavado, Darrius and Shujinko, but yeah, for me this is definitely the best roster we've had in a long while.
A Kharacter I came up with was Tiamat, who was originally supposed to be in Deadly Alliance before Reptile stole the look and she was scrapped. She could be a Zetarran like Reptile, but can't transform into a human. An idea I had for her stemmed from Reptile's ending, where it's alluded that there's been more Zetarrans like him but they were executed. Thought that maybe Tiamat could be the party responsible for this.
Her weapon would be a walking cane that is, in actuality, a shepard's axe, that she would use in tandem with her large, Zetarran frame.
Other ideas I had were to make Hydro, Meat, Mokap, and Tasia actually Kharacters instead of extremely minor or joke ones.
After the new batch in MK11 thank God there are none
Not unpopular. MK fans obviously want to see MK characters. Even Tekken fans didn't like seeing guests in their last game. They had 4 in the end. MK1 is already at 6!
Seems like SF6 is also going to lean more into guests, 2 right now, but at least they both are practically from the same universe so it makes sense. Unlike MK where Omniman gets to beat up a dude in a halloween costume lol.
She was in MKX in the background. You can throw her at the opponent
I desperately and unironically want Madam Bo as a playable character that somehow incorporates her tea in her moveset. Like Triborg, drinking different teas gives you different stances and abilities. Like green/black/matcha translates to zoning/grappling/rush down or something equally as ridiculous.
There’s a handful of faceless relatives a few characters mention
Like Vathek, and Xandras and so on
Who's getting bored of guest characters?
Well there are MK fans who only want old characters... So there ya go folks
MKX and MK11 tried that and you guys treated newcomers like garbage
With the exception of Mk vs dc I think every game adds new members to the universe. This excludes dlc add ons like Omni man etc.
I think the new era spin on characters makes up for that a lot tbh. everyone got a new backstory and look to them so i’m not that upset about having new characters
Yeah, I actually found myself mistaking a few of them for completely new characters. For example, Reiko was so forgettable to me I thought they had finally put that one dude from the comics in a game 😂
MK vs DC had dark Kahn
I believe it wouldve been mk9, if you dont count cyber sub since thats just sub zero.
skarlet was introduced in 9 via dlc if you want to count that but im pretty sure were discounting dlc
I mean, considering MK9 basically had the cast consisting of characters from MK 1 - 3, Cyber Sub Zero only really replaces Smoke as the 3rd Cyber Ninja Trio
Yes, it was even stated in a Ed Boon interview that there's only established characters in the game. So I expect only old characters to return, unless they add a character who's technically old, but gets a completely new look and backstory for example Harumi and or Fujin.
After seeing the Scorpion tower ending, I actually kinda want a swordstress Harumi Shirai added as a character. After all, new Harumi seems to be way more of a fighter than in the past.
Tanya is Tanya in name only tbh - mechanically she has rather little in common with Tanya of past iterations
I mean Takeda is clearly already a big difference since he appears older than Kenshi. His father in the last timeline.
They can still add Harumi.
Yes but they form a new character . He always refers to himself as me rather than we so I assume he is his own person
The roster was leaked. We already know there's no new characters unless it's a non-playable boss!
The roster isn't fully leaked. One character remains unknown.
Kreate-A-Kharacter
Why he hesitated so much? I do find it strange that new characters haven’t even been mentioned, much less shown!
My guess it's not really a new character. But an old one in a completely new different makeover, so different they can pass for new. That's why Ed was hesitant.
I don't think there will be a true new character in this one. Only 1 or 2 characters remain unknown.
I find that a little disappointing. I always want some new characters in a new game
I agree. It's the same situation with Cyber Sub-Zero. Sure he's new, but he was still Sub-Zero.
Probably a new character in the story but not playable
Maybe saving that for DLC or the next game
He can't possibly say yes to that, especially with that firmer yes in the end. It has to be base roster.
I think the reason he hesitated was probably because he was considering whether or not to actually confirm a new character, maybe because they will be revealed soon.
Probably was thinking about how much to disclose. He was most likely hesitant to reveal that there were new fighters at all.
Hanzo as a new non scorpion character.
Guys, guys, there should be a total of 25 characters on the base roster (1 of them is Shang Tsung, the bonus preorder character). So besides the 19 playable characters plus Shang Tsung, there are 5 other spots that are undetermined!
R00000r has had discussions with other users on Gamefaqs and it has been pinpointed that these last 5 spots are for some of Baraka, Cyrax, D'vorah, Erron Black, Jax, Kano, Kintaro, Rain, Shao Kahn, or Sonya. So some of your favorites could still make it on the base roster. 😎🐙😸
Please don't toy with me like that?! Lol. Are the characters you mentioned dlc or on the launch lineup because this list is pretty doo doo. Not your list the launch line up
I promise you that I'm not toying with you. The rumor out there is that Ermac and Takeda were originally on the base roster but then a decision was made to switch them to the first DLC Kombat pack (probably because they would sell). That means that 2 other characters (whose identity we don't know) got switched to the base roster.
I'm not sure if those 2 characters are Baraka or Kano or Rain or Sonya or someone else I listed.
It's been speculated that Cyrax and Kintaro could be in a DLC Kombat pack 2. But the others I listed have been pinpointed to take up the last 5 remaining spots. Who will it be? R00000r has been tight-lipped about it and from what I can tell doesn't want to leak anything further.
I believe someone had a conversation with r00000r where he strongly implied that Jade wasn't on the base roster, although she was in the story mode.
I suspect that she has a good chance to be DLC in a Kombat Pack 2.
Ashrah
Havik
Johnny Cage
Kenshi
Kitana
Kung Lao
Li Mei
Liu Kang
Mileena
Nitara
Raiden
Reiko
Reptile
Scorpion
Shang Tsung
Sindel
Smoke
Sub-Zero
Tanya
Interesting that Ashrah, Li Mei, and Tanya are included since they were pretty minor characters in the overall storyline previously.
Nitara was at least in the movie so I guess I can see why she's included, Havik was pretty minor as well but he was in some of the endings of the previous game so I guess I see why he's still considered important enough.
Ed Boon’s talked a lot throughout the years about bringing back minor characters and reintroducing them to a new game/audience
One thing that is extremely major this new canon is that the timeline is 100% flexible and they’re now able to completely change up characters who are around. Previously unknown or background characters now have an opportunity to receive some limelight, while characters we have seen for years will be able to slowly develop in the background since we already know pretty much everything about them
One of my favorite things in franchises is mixing things up and allowing relatively unknown characters to be seen in a new light and have a new opportunity. I can’t wait to see this new timeline develop as the years go on
So who's the other 5? The character select screen showed 24 at the showcase. I'm happy li mei, NITARRRAAAAA, Reiko, havik, and ashrah are back!!!
I know Homelander and Peace Maker were leaked as characters.
Its pretty hilarious seeing the more casual perspective of the roster in the comments here. If you guys hopped over to the mk subs you'd see the fan base is the most excited about a starting roster they've been in over 10 years. Give some of these characters a chance before you write them off for not including some characters mk hasn't had any new ideas for in a decade.
Never ever expected Havik to make a return. I like when they bring back forgotten characters and give them new life.
Smoke was my favorite back in MK9 I loved how fast his move set was
Because I don’t see any new face in the roaster
Technically Liu Kang is the only returning character.
Geras !?
Rebooted and not the same person, just like everyone else.
They're treating the 3D era characters as new due to their long absence. For those of us who started with MK9 and after, it gives us quite a few new faces.
Only the dlc characters are new, omni man and peacemaker
Ye, i remember playing Homelander in MK11
You what...?
Tanya is a new kharacter lol. New body, new face, new weapons, new personality all that's remained is her name.
Tanya is from Mk X, so, she is not a new character
Unfortunately no newcomer character in MK1
Just bring back some iconic characters from old MK game - MKX and get rid of popular characters from 11
Ermac
Kenshi
Jax
Reptile.
Kung Lao.
Personally I’m fine with it, the roster is lining up to be amazing nonetheless but I just wanted to hear other people’s opinions on it
Ed Boon already stated in an interview there will be at least one new character introduced to the franchise in MK1
Hmmm... Just said "character" which means not necessarily playable.
Bo is that new character.
You mean the one we're they asked and he say: in this game? And think a little and then answer?
He never said that.
I don't hate it. You have a lore already rich with characters you could use or fix or whatever. Yeah, new characters are cool and all, but there are a lot of MK characters they could already work with.
It's a great thing. The universe is already crammed full of characters that have been discarded and not used for decades. Redesigned old characters should take those slots.
I don't need them to make 5 new characters that we know they're just going to abandon the next game anyway.
I was just going to say that. This new timeline is going to make some characters feel new anyways so we don’t need to be introduced to know ones when there ’s sooo many old ones that us fans have been begging for
I’m willing to sacrifice new characters if it means old favorites finally get a chance to return.
It’s fine. Old characters can be updated to feel like new characters enough anyways.
