Secret Characters and Kameos
Mortal Kombat has a rich history of secret unlockables, including hidden characters. In MK1, there is speculation and desire among fans for secret kameo fighters like Reptile or Mokap to be unlocked through specific requirements [1:3]. The idea of unlocking characters through gameplay rather than purchasing them resonates with the community, harking back to older games where discovering secrets was part of the fun
[1:4].
Stage Fatalities and Interactables
MK1 is noted for lacking stage fatalities, which were present in previous installments such as MK9, MKX, and MK11 [2]. While MK1 does not feature interactables that impact gameplay, it does include cosmetic interactions with background elements
[2:3]. There is hope among players that future updates might introduce stage fatalities, similar to how they were added post-launch in MK11
[2:6].
Unlockable Characters Speculation
There has been confusion and speculation about which characters might be unlockable in MK1. Frost is frequently mentioned as a potential unlockable character, while Shang Tsung and Mileena have been debunked as such [3:1]
[3:4]. This speculation keeps players engaged and eager to discover new content.
Classic Unlockables via Codes
In homage to classic games, some versions of Mortal Kombat offer unlockable characters via special codes at the select screen. For example, Reptile, Goro, and Shang Tsung can be accessed by inputting specific codes [4:1]. These features reflect the franchise's tradition of providing hidden content that rewards exploration and experimentation.
Community Preferences and Feedback
Players have expressed mixed feelings about the current state of unlockables in MK1. Some miss the darker, horror-inspired aesthetic of previous games and feel that MK1's vibrant visuals detract from the traditional Mortal Kombat atmosphere [5:2]
[5:3]. Others appreciate the storytelling and RPG-like elements introduced in MK1, suggesting that these features align well with the franchise's legacy
[5:6].
One of my favorite things about the older games was trying to figure out how to unlock secret characters, and I think it would be cool to bring that back in this game. Maybe not entire playable characters but maybe secret kameo fighters (like Blanche, Art Lean, Mokap, the Roomba etc) could be unlocked through specific requirements in the towers.
Secret skins, brutalities, stage fatalities/brutalities would also be really cool. What else could they add?
Yeah, the secrets are very cool, adds more content and fun to the game, they kind of had that a bit in mk11 with frost and the skins exclusive to the krypt
There was something mentioned recently about Secret Kameos to unlock. Would be fun to unlock Kameo Reptile like the old days.
Same
And its not like it can't be done. Look at FromSoftware games. Modern day games with tons of secrets to find regardless of datamining/leaks.
The secrets are a big part of MK. Ffs they invented the hidden character in fighting games. Reptile was literally the first.
u will get paid unlockables and like it
Sadly.😂😭
I'll never forget meditating for an entire month in Deception just to get Liu Kang in the woods lmao
It was amazing
MK's has always done Easter eggs and secrets exceptionally well
Boss Rush Mode and Smoke Missions in Shaolin Monks come to mind as well
We had them in 9, X, and 11 but still nothing for MK1. Mind you, there’s potential. The big melting pot in the Treasure Chamber that Havik got burnt with, the monsters in The Flesh Pits, the traps in The Maze…. All would be welcome
i mean it can come in the future stage fatalities arrived late after mk11 release at the same time of friendship
Friendship and Stage Fatalities arrived at the same time in MK11 with Aftermath, NOT with the Mileena, Rambo and Rain pack.
By the time that Rain, Mileena and Rambo came out those things were already in the game.
Khaos Reigns would’ve been the time to add them like they did with MK11 Aftermath
I’ll give you an even more interesting fact - MK1 is the only MK game where you cannot interact with the environment in any way whatsoever.
MK - stage fatality
MK2 - stage fatalities
MK3-MKT - stage transitions & stage fatalities
MK4 - stage interactables & stage fatalities
MKDA - stage interactables
MKD - stage interactables, stage transitions, stage weapons & death traps
MKA - stage interactables, stage transitions, stage weapons, death traps & stage fatalities
MK Vs DC - stage interactables & stage transitions
MK9 - stage fatalities
MKX - stage interactables, stage brutalities & stage fatalities
MK11 - stage interactables, stage brutalities & stage fatalities
MK1 - nothing
Not entirely true, though you can't interact with it in a way that affects gameplay, you can interact with background elements like the chairs in The Tea House or the rumba in Cage Mansion
That’s a good point, though I guess what I meant was an impact on gameplay. All of the things I’ve listed are gameplay-related whereas the interactions you mention are purely cosmetic.
To be honest, the stage interactables sucked. But I wish we got stage transitions
Stage transitions would be awesome. I personally enjoyed the interactables too - I grew up on 3D MK, and it always made the environment seem “real”, like you’re actually there.
Every MK that has no Pit stage will always be bottom tier to me, even if it's 99% perfect for the rest.
This is what happening when you rush the creation of a game, its going backwards.
Guess we will find out on April 23 lol
Definitely like MK9, MKX and Injustice 2: base roster unlockables. My bet's on Frost.
seems like the most likely case
I'm pretty sure Frost will be the unlockable character since there's no footage of her, beside those few seconds in the story trailer and Shao Kahn will fill the other spot left. There's no reason to deceive ourselves at this point :/
i guess that the unlockable ''leak'' was just lucky guessing on Shang Tsung part
I just wonder how the "leaker" mistook Kitana for Mileena, given that she was supposedly "unlockable" too.
You talking about charcters or cosmetics
characters
As I've said before, Frost will be unlockable.
Shang Tsung and Mileena are debunked as unlockables.
Just as Street Fighter II Champion Edition allowed players to fight as the four unplayable characters of Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat Champion Edition allows players to fight as the three unplayable characters of Mortal Kombat: Reptile, Goro and Shang Tsung!! The three hidden characters are accessed by inputting special codes on the select screen.
Play as Reptile: At the Character Select Screen, highlight SUB-ZERO then hold "SELECT" before selecting him!
Play as Goro: At the Character Select Screen, highlight JOHNNY CAGE then hold "SELECT" before selecting him!
Play as Shang Tsung: At the Character Select Screen, highlight LIU KANG then hold "SELECT" before selecting him!

I came up with a little game for us to play while thinking about Mortal Kombat 1.
It's super simple — you just pick three things from the game based on the categories below:
✅ Total Mortal Kombat
Something that’s been part of the franchise for years and came back strong (or even better) in MK1.
>
❌ Not at All Mortal Kombat
Something that goes against what you’d expect from MK. It might be new, or a change that doesn’t fit.
>
✨ New But So Kombat
A brand-new feature in MK1 that still feels right at home in the MK universe.
>
You can choose anything: gameplay, visuals, music, characters, costumes, stages, colors, vibes, etc.
Just don’t forget to explain why each thing fits the category.
Comment format (Suggestion):
So Mortal Kombat: ______
Justification: ______
Not at All Mortal Kombat: ______
Justification: ______
New But So Kombat: ______
Justification: ______
Feel free to break all the rules! hahaha
I'll give it a shot:
Total Mortal Kombat Inspiration from Asian Cultures: The first two games were heavily inspired by Asian Martial Arts and had sort of an esoteric or mystical vibe going on. It's nice to see it again.
Not At All Mortal Kombat The Light and Serene Outworld: I have always seen that gritty and dark mood as something very characteristic to the Mortal Kombat series. MKX was like that and even brought along some horror movie guest characters. MK11 not so much, but still very gloomy. In MK1, however, Outworld is so beautiful and colorful that it feels like heaven. It doesn't match a game where dismemberment and gruesome deaths are the main attraction.
New, But So Mortal Kombat Sorry, there's nothing new that worked in this game for me. Kameos are a lame, as if Netherrealm is trying to shove a lot of characters into the game to appeal to fans without putting the necessary effort into it. Many characters, like Sonya, aren't even mentioned in the story and they didn't even bother to create a new costume for the character. Invasion mode could have been great, but they made it so lazily. Lots of grinding and unfunny fights that don't really offer a challenge.
So Mortal Kombat: Stages Justification: The stark contrast in different realms makes it pretty obvious they are MK stages.
Not So Mortal Kombat: Colour Justificaton: Too much pop. A Mortal Kombat game should feel dark and scary with major horror elements, something NRS did great in MK9-MK11. They seemed to abandon it with the new entry.
New but So Kombat: Invasions Justification: I picked this to be controversial lol. It's not perfect at all, in MK1 it sucks ass and they clearly abandoned it shortly after the community feedback. With more time, and a little bit more love it could be a mainstay. Single Player content is something that is what seperates a successful MK game to a dead one. We need more single player content. Invasions would be great if we mixed it with Konquest style open-world, whilst keeping the seasonal kombatant attacking.
I agree with this except for color. MK9 stages were great, but that's mainly because they're mostly just remakes of arcade stages. MKX stages are dark in the sense that you can't really see anything, and they're not really that scary.
MK1 has that one Shang Tsungs lab, which is the more horror-adjacent stage in a long time imo. It also has my favorite version of the living woods. But yeah, some of MK1 is a little too colorful for MK (even though I like it tbh.)
The Shang Tsung stage is great, but MK1 would feel more like Mortal Kombat if it was just a little bit less vibrant.
✅ Total : FINISH HIM!! Fatalities, Kameo fatalities, Brutalities & Animalties are IMO the best the franchise has ever had. I can finish an opponent roughly 10 different ways with any character. Take that MK Armageddon
❌ Not: I may not be a big enough fan to comment on this but I hate this version of the Shrine. I feel as though I am never pleasantly surprised; I only get Environmetal art and background cards and it just lacks any depth or cool factor to it. Take me back to the Krypt in Deception
✨ New: Floyd!! Not exactly a feature I know but this one character is the stuff legends are made of, I love the hidden secret character ninja callback. The mystique and potential for new lore is what brings me joy ever since the original MK
✅Storytelling, besides Khaos reigns it’s cool to visual see the story like a movie ❌Micro-Transactions, idk what else to choose. I don’t buy them I like the grind & prefer to earn them for free ✨Invasions/Towers of Time, The RPG esc aspect kinda fits considering Konquest mode from the earlier games. Towers of time lets you play towers & gets you rewards what else could you want
There were some tokens in MK2 and MK3 I believe. At the bottom of the Vs. screen. You can move them up and it changes the dragon symbol to other stuff.
What were they for?
Im about 30 years late. Lol. Nearly 40 now.
Their for Kombat Kodes in MK3 and UMK3
Wow. Thanks!!!
In 2 player mode on MK3/UMK3 there were 6 space Kombat Kodes that modified the matchup when inputted. MK Secrets has a list of how they were inputted and what each one did.
Wow. Thanks!!!
I really love this game dont get me wrong, the core gameplay is super fun but this game feels like its missing a lot of content so i made a list of all the main things i could think of that its missing
Explanations of abilities in move list
Decent customisation
Three line dialogue
Pinning moves on screen
Seeing all cosmetics for a character and how to get them
Customisable intros and outros
Character tutorials
loadouts
Stage interactables
Changing skin in character select
2 characters compared to mk11
A decent single player mode (ik its subjective but invasions is such a downgrade from mk11)
Dialogue in towers
Stage fatalities
Crossplay
and just a fuck load of quality of life features
Wouldn't we all wait? But no. Seeing how far better SF6 and Tekken 8 are going to be had them rush. Genius.
SF6 is not better, barely any singleplayer content, no real story. Surely mechanics are great but MK has a different focus.
And at least the point of friendships on this list is misleading because it came way after MK11 release. Also more customization was all added later, amount of skins was the same or even less counting they had to also design kameos.
People are not fair to MK1 although most points on this list are valid.
This is the most important feature missing in this brand new fighting game.
As strictly a single player no online, and not someone who will every do those insane multi hit combos, I miss the stage interaction including the uppercut into differnet level, stage fatality, unlocking fatalities when you input them. Saying flawless victory between rounds, now it only says it at the end of match. I don't know about anyone else but I have a huge delay in my controller when entering combos in the tutorial, and even when done correctly, i.e. the moves string matches the demo video still nothing, or how the combo string it wants can't be completed because the opponent has fallen out of the range. I also noticed that the enhanced does not seem to work as fluently as in mk11, and when it does the animation doesn't change. And speaking of tutorials, when you get into the character based ones, first one ok but then it gets into a multi input combo string that even non charcter stage it has a problem properly noting. I forget which game it was but they had something similar, the first few level covered combo specifically for the character and a few special moves and then towards the end it got into the longer combo, this game its like ok stage 1 its a simple 3 input combo, then stage 2 input these 7 commands while juggling the person in the air. And I feel the kameos are way overdone and over used and takes away.
Can I ask what difficulties do you have trying to learn combos?
Timing, I have never been a quick button hitter either. If it's three button input I can do that all day lol
There are a lot of instances in the combo trials where you either gotta do a quick step forward or even a full dash in order to reach the opponent again for followup after juggling, but the game never tells you that. So maybe try that if you’re struggling with reach like you described, could be all that’s missing. 😊
It's weird to list "three line dialogue" as something missing.
The dialogue doesn’t seem like much on paper but there was so much content from them in injustice 2 and mk11, there’s still content to be made but not as much as they are shorter. They also gave insight into the characters and lore that you aren’t able to get as much of now since it’s 2 sentences
They aren’t missing. They’re implemented differently.
Its honestly not that weird. Mk11 and x’s pregame dialogue was so fun and i feel added a lot of characterization to the kombatants, having 2 lines of dialogue is such a small difference but you definitely do feel it.
Yeah, there are some characters that I don't know how to properly use because they're just not explained. Maybe they have a Kombat last but I'd prefer to be able to find explanations in game.
Customisation in this game is honestly better in my opinion. There was too much in 11. This simplified way is much better.
Three line dialogue isn't really something "missing". They changed it to two lines which provides banter whilst still being short enough to act like a loading screen. What is missing is the option to use them in towers and ranked.
That is absolutely something missing that would be useful.
Related to point 2, there was too much in 11. And I honestly like the surprise of unlocking new gear pieces. With 11, I'd see a gear that I was like "that's the coolest with this skin, that's what I want" and I've collected so much I just never used. With MK1, I'm changing gear a lot more and using the randomise favourites feature which has worked pretty well for me.
Honestly, I can do with or without.
See point 1.
Loadouts would be nice and more than 5 would be appreciated.
There's only so many buttons on the controller. Kameos are better than stage interactables for me since they can be used over and over, whilst most stage interactables were one and dones. They also feel like an expansion of your Moveset rather than "I threw a rock!"
Yeah that's just loadouts. You're doubling up points with semantics.
This isn't really something missing either. Not every game is gonna have the same amount of characters compared to the previous, especially since this gameplay is a lot more complex than 11s. That being said, Quan Chi and Ermac definitely should've been base with their story importance.
Friendships and stage fatalities in 11 and X were also added later with DLC. I feel it'll likely be the same here.
Better than Towers of Time.
Again see point 3.
See point 12
Yeah Crossplay should be available at launch with fighting games. Connected with the same player three times last night.
Yeah but most games also need QoL updates after the first few weeks as well. 11 needed them too.
..
They're practically characters themselves with their own back stories as opposed to the usual mundane fighting game stages.
They can even pull off fatalities...
Deception and Armageddon stages have so much unique interactables and are as important as the playable characters in terms of gameplay, I really wish we'd have 3D gameplay again just because the stages were so incredible with that gameplay style.
Stage fatalities could have looked so epic in MK1. Maybe the next game will see them return.
Stage fatalities + interactions 🤌🏻
Other games from that era (Street Fighter, Fatal Fury etc) tend to have bright stages, often with spectators in the background. MK is a lot darker (both literally and figuratively), and have more creepy things in the background - like the eyes and the skeleton in Goro's MK1 stage, the shadow priests, growling trees, portals ... etc.
What are your guys thoughts on unlockable characters? Do you think there are any? If so, who do you think will make it? Personally I'm not too sure because the website shows empty slots but the roster screen in game doesn't
People already finished the story mode and unlocked a lot of stuff in the Krypt. The Frozen girl is the only unlockable. She's the only blank slot anyway
The only konfirmed unlockable is Frost, unlocked by beating Chapter 4. If there were any others, they would be leaked by now. Perhaps Cyrax?
True, unless there are more unlockables in the krypt
no one has seem to even scratch the service of the krypt as of now. so it’s still possible
the whole “secret characters” thing looks to by pointing at the npc fighters in story mode tho. we’ll see
cyrax and sektor are unlockable
There’s no proof that they are anything but NPC’s you fight in the story.
A guy on youtube already showed the leaked images of cyrax n sektor fighting.
They’re NPCs in story.
You can add Sheeva to that list.
Why sheeva?
She is in the story mode.......i think thats the only reason.
While I want there to be, no. The unlockable leak list was debunked the second Shang Tsung was announced as DLC.
Frost is the equivalent of Shinnok in MKX, brainiac in IJ2 and Cyber-sub in MK9.
And that’s it, leaving the kyrpt purely for cosmetics and cool side content.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think I'm missing some story Rewards. There's nothing in my notifications tab, but I I think I remember getting some pieces that I don't have unlocked. Is there a list somewhere of all the unlockables that you get through story mode?
On a similar note, I was wondering if there was any benefit to going back and re-playing the sections where you can pick your character. Do I get more stuff if I 100% story mode?
I just did that the other day so I’m 100% complete in the story mode. I didn’t get a god damn thing.
Damn. On the one hand, I appreciate that they don't make you grind it out to get all the stuff, on the other it's a little disappointing to feel like there's no value to playing all the sides of the story.
I was told no
Do we have to do it twice like injustice 2 from the different view of characters
I hope not
I wondering about that cause I don’t mind the grind it’s touch time do it again I just finished yesterday with story mode
I checked my PS4 earlier and yeah it’s it’s like injustice 2 we have go back and do it again
No and yes I'm also missing rewards
Damn. That means i gotta fuckin fight kronika again. That shit was stressfull
I tried that. Didn't work on getting my stuff back.
