Official Release Information
Hogwarts Legacy was officially released on February 10, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game was later made available for other platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, which is mentioned in one of the discussions as a platform where users are currently enjoying the game [1].
Gameplay and Experience
Players have shared their experiences with the game, highlighting its engaging side quests and main storyline. Some players noted that the game can feel grindy at times, requiring completion of side quests to progress in the main story [1:7]. Despite this, many find the game immersive and enjoyable, with plenty of content to explore
[1:8].
Sequel and Future Developments
There are discussions about a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, which is expected to use Unreal Engine 5. This has sparked conversations about potential improvements and optimizations needed for the next installment [3]. While some users express concerns about performance issues commonly associated with UE5, others remain hopeful for a well-optimized release
[3:2].
Overall, Hogwarts Legacy has been well-received by fans of the Harry Potter universe, offering an expansive and detailed world to explore. As the game continues to evolve and potentially expand into sequels, players remain engaged and excited about future developments.
I am playing it on my Switch Lite and there is never a dull moment. I have so many side quests to complete but still deal with the main quest.
Without spoilers is there still a long way to go for me? I only completed the first "dungeon" with the spiders and Sebastian just taught me that fire spell in that secret room.
Thanks!
Would you recommend if havent seen films/books ??
There are some book/movie references but you don’t need them.
There is a character that gives you a wizard world quiz during one of the missions but the internet can give you all the answers.
While I love it I often take comfort from an old love in Skyrim cos I don't have much time to dedicate to a new game and Skyrim is familiar. I haven't made it passed the 5th year yet
Yes you're barely at the beginning 🙂
Really? Wow I already feel like I have done a lot and I guess I haven't even scratched the surface lol. Gonna be playing this game for quite awhile I guess which is great.
I'm happy you enjoy it! I got it a few months ago too and I've been obsessed with it ever since haha
Yeah there's a pretty long way to go. Once you get the hang of what's main story and what's not, you can get through the main game pretty quickly. But honestly don't do that, because it will make doing everything else afterwards feel less exciting. Im not sure if this is true, but I always felt like there was some sort of 'order' the game was meant to be played in, so I tried to do a lot of the side quests first. It also takes a long time to build up a decent amount of gold, which you will need later on.
Yeah I am trying to do a bunch of side quests and then continue to the main story for a bit, then do some side quests again. I'm taking my time trying to still immerse myself in this awesome game.
I still suck at combat though, every time I go out and explore I just suck at fighting. Hopefully I'll get better. Usually when there are multiple enemies at once they attack me from behind and I can't keep focused on them all. Yeah I suck right now.
You will improve with practise and unlocking more spells. The lessons are part of the main story though. I used to stop continuing with main objectives for awhile after I'd unlocked a new spell, particularly if it was a combat spell, because I wanted to go out and kill spiders/level up.
You are quite at the beginning of the game...the game does get really really grindy later on...like you have main quests but to access them you need to complete a lot of the side quests to level up...the game doesnt even allow you to proceed with the mission if you are underleveled for a mission...for me the story was an absolute borefest. It looked like it was made by ai rather than being written by someone...you don't feel any emotions or connection with the characters at all like in the movies and books ..
Wow really? Well I don't think I will mind because I like doing the side quests. But maybe after a certain point in the game it will be annoying who knows.
The beta is still the first week of October. They need to move that up first.
Not if they shadow drop the game after beta finishes? 🤔
Do they tho? If they think the game is polished with enough content at release i could see them dropping shortly after beta.
Gotta farm as much Vbucks as possible before GTA 6 takes 90% of the player base in May.
More like 100%
Can’t wait. BattleEye seems to actually work now but idc as much as the game isn’t about PvP for me. That’s more of a side quest
i’m here for the mess
Gotta beat the collapse of the dollar.
They scared
Quite opposite lmao if they were scared they would move it back not closer to its competitors
Huh?
a new temporary role that avalanche software has just posted a few days ago, it seems that they’re going full on ahead with using Unreal Engine 5. I know it’s a no brainer they’re gonna use UE5 since the first game used UE4 but it’s nice to finally see a confirmation that they’re using Unreal Engine 5 for its sequel despite all the controversies surrounding it, I hope they have all the time needed for the game to be optimised and doesn’t come out half baked like most UE5 triple A games these days, looking forward to the sequel announcement. It could be tomorrow or in the next few years for all we know but whatever it is I hope they’re taking time with it (I know the developers are lurking on this sub, 👋, take all the time that u need 😌)
If Avalanche can optimize the engine and have the game looking good, then I really don't mind this.
Games like Ninja Gaiden 2 Black or Sonic Racing Crossworlds show that it's the companies using the engine that are the problem, not the engine itself since they both look and run well (Crossworlds is apparently also gonna be only 15GB on launch somehow).
Oh god dammit . Please no
UE5 is shit for lumen and lighting conditions, you lose FPS like crazy for no reason whatsoever, and that applies to all games created within it. And in a game like HL we know that that atmosphere with the correct lighting is ESSENTIAL.
nooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
So, characters will be all ugly and the game will run like sh*t.
Good to know.
I'll save the money, then.

Can something without a release date actually be delayed?
In this case technically yes, if it doesn’t end up coming out until 2026, because they’ve said it’ll be this year quite frequently
Fair, missed they said "this year" (though I'm still not concerned, there's plenty of time left in the year)
With MK1 effectively dead in the water as a promotional tool, I feel like they were banking on releasing this around the same time as the new movie to actually get a little brand synergy going, and now that it’s been delayed, this is up in the air. Doesn’t seem likely, but there’s the off chance they heard the feedback and are working on putting MK Gold into the pack and that’s why they haven’t locked in a date yet
Nope. Just no rush to have a date far out. We know the physical edition releases December 12th. So the digital game will be sometime between now and December 12th
No. You're giving into click bait from MK youtubers. Never, ever, under any circumstances listen to them. Digital clips have already said the December date for the physical release is 100% set in stone, and they also posted recently that a 2025 release is 100% confirmed.
I think the movie delay affected it. They want them somewhat close. I predict March of 2026.
Two hours almost We're sooooooooo close
👍
Same bro, I'm hyped af too
It just seems like the perfect time. For me at least Harry Potter has always been a winter thing, and I feel like surely they would be able to have it ready to go in like 14 months time.
And I’m just guessing if they end up going with a 2027 release date, they may end up releasing it earlier in the year rather than later?
I guess if they do go with the 2027 release date, it will give them more time to start on series production for season 2 though, so there aren’t huge gaps between seasons.
I’m with you, to me HP is an autumn/winter story and experience and the idea of it being spring/summer feels very disjointed in my mind! I’ll have to get used to the idea I guess!
It’s not gonna happen. HBO shows of this scale have about 8-9 months of post and promo once they’re wrapped on the season. S1 wraps in May of next year.
So, even if we say 8 months that takes us to January 2027. But also big shows tend to avoid January premieres because the industry is slowly creakily waking back up after the holidays and everyone is also like ‘I can’t focus on anything till I’ve had my Sundance.’
So I think February-March 2027 is the most likely premiere window. But it’s def not gonna be releasing in late 2026. That is, unfortunately, wishful thinking.
All the official announcements on the Harry Potter website say 2027. It's not gonna get moved forward.
I suspect they'll try to tie it into the 30th anniversary of the franchise.
It could. Percy Jackson came out two months early. It was supposed to premiere in February 2024, but came out in December 2023.
And that show has one of the biggest Disney Plus budgets ever.
They’ve only just started filming. And with them having a 2 season filming schedule and all the work that goes into post-production, I think it’s coming out in spring/summer 2027. Even fall 2027 wouldn’t surprise me.
A typical show commits about 7-10 days of filming per episode of programming (at least The Sopranos did). Plus where they will be primarily working with kids, the days will be shorter and less intense (more days off etc) so I would imagine S1 will film up until November time and S2 will kick off in the Spring with filming wrapped up by the summer ‘26
The Sopranos was 20+ years ago and was a very different kind of series. Even back then a show like Harry Potter would have taken more time. But TV production is very different now. In terms of production this will be closer to the final season of Game of Thrones than it will be The Sopranos, and that took I think a year to film the final season.
Because they are filming with kids, it will take somewhat longer. They can't cut Harry's screentime, at least not by much. And if the days are shorter because Dominic McLaughlin can't work that many hours a day, it means they will need more days to shoot all his scenes.
You can always rewatch it at Christmas. Why would you want it to release later just so it fits a certain window? I want them to release it when it’s ready.
That is not going to happen. They’re not going to sit on a much anticipated finished show for six months just to release it in a season that feels like it fits the show more. Nor would I want them to do it.
I just hope they won’t follow Stranger Things’ filming schedule because 10 years for 5 seasons only is absolutely ridiculous
No thanks lol, the sooner the better. December ‘26 would be perfect but unfortunately it doesn’t sound possible.
I feel like we just need a sequel to the first Hogwarts legacy game because I think that the story is still incomplete and I still got many questions unanswered Anyone feeling the same way?
all I want from HL2 is to move into 6th year and actually have consequences for my actions.
if it ties in with the upcoming show, i hope it’s just through small easter eggs like the nods to the books and movies in the first game. it makes no sense to release a full game adaptation of a show that’s already been adapted into movies which themselves were adapted from books. and to mention that there were also harry potter games released in the past that lined up with the movies.
i just don't see it being a smart move on their behalf
As an avid Fallout player, I felt that. The decisions you make in game need to have so much more weight.
Whaaat? :( But Sebastian's and Anne's storyline is so unresolved... and also the MC's end choice didn't have any consequences in HL, I assumed they would tie it all up in a sequel...
I’m more disappointed that it’s supposedly going to be a live service game.
w-what? I wonder if these are the same developers who made HL or did the project move to a different group?
It's from the same studio but they seem to be hiring an entirely different team to do an HP online multiplayer, possibly live-service game. They hired a new game director, are hiring a bunch of senior positions just to do the multiplayer game. They confirmed that 2 games are being developed in parallel: the HL sequel and a multiplayer online RPG in HP universe
It’s the same people, just Warner Bros. trying to maximize the amount of money made on it even though the first one made bank.
Warner Brothers🙄🙄🙄🤢🤮
I’m slightly disappointed to be honest, if we could continue with year 6 and do year 7 as well that would be great, as well as finding out what happens to Anne, Sebastian, and every other character we’ve come into contact with since last game, more spells, more side quests, missions, more of the map to explore, a lot of new things would be nice 😊
Agreed, I was genuinely only interested in the next one as a potential story sequel to the first 😅 ahwell
Let’s hope not. We know the original story, we have experienced it so many times, and we will experience it again with the new show. Makes no sense. Tell new stories. Give us new experiences.
I know (not for but at least rumored) that there is a second Hogwarts legacy coming and I just need to talk about my thoughts. I feel like this game can easily follow games series like assassin creed where is the same principle but new story. Like this one was the 1890s. We could have one focusing on the Triwizards Cup in some time period. We could have the first group of students at Hogwarts discovering the secrets the school has. Students during the first wizarding war. Idk I just have been getting a lot of videos on Hogwarts legacy and it’s all my brain can thinking about and I needed a place to dump it. Wondering what other people would like Hogwarts legacy 2 and maybe other ones to focus on.
There will 100% be a sequel, the game was a massive critical and financial success. I think the 1980's would be a cool time but I'm just happy there will be a sequel. A different wizarding school would be a nice change too. Hogwarts is cool, but there's wizarding schools the world over and it would be fun to explore a totally new setting.
Up voting for the other Wizarding schools, not the 80s suggestion, since HP was set in the 90s, and there are SO MANY OTHER TIME PERIODS that would be more interesting than modern day.
Based on the time frame of part 1 and then the time frame of the beasts movies I would like to see you main character from legacy go on to help the British government in a secret alliance department to help win world war 2 fighting dark wizards working for hitlers occult department. Trying to stop them from gaining the upper hand for Germany by gaining occult artifacts. It’s like Indiana jones meets wizarding world. It’s got every thing I mean using spells to fight nazis with machine guns instead of poachers with spells.
Idk why I thought the sequel was confirmed.. now I’m sad
I would love an Auror-themed detective like one. Which is kind of what Hogwarts Legacy leaned toward anyway lol. And I kind of feel like the theme would have to be different because we've already experienced Hogwarts Castle, it'll get old after a while. It's the problem Tears of the Kingdom had to deal with since it was set in exactly the same land as the first game. But it also wouldn't make sense for Hogwarts Legacy to be the only game with the castle... I think they can make it work without being repetitive somehow. Goodness knows I grew up with several versions of the castle playing the original game series based on the movies.
I’ve only played a few minutes of botw. I’m curious, how did totk deal with that? If you have a moment, I’d love to hear about it!
Totk used the same map, but added caves. So you go into caves and there's new content. The surface also has some minor differences, monster camps in places they weren't before, a new village, but generally it's the same with minor tweaks. They also introduced floating sky islands, and...well, I wouldn't want to spoil it for you. I'd highly recommend playing both games as they're phenomenal. Totk's story is amazing but doesn't work well in an open world environment, and botw is pure masterpiece.
I’d love this
The platform is incredible. I love it so much more than any other virtual world I've played in.
I'm honestly really excited for Hogwarts Legacy 2. While I am a bit upset their doing it based on the new show and not a new plot (one of my favorite parts about Hogwarts legacy) I'm excited to see what they do with the game. The details in HL are already AMAZING so i bet they'll be even better in the 2nd. I saw a lot of people wishing that there would be a bit less main character syndrome I quite enjoyed it because with more down to earth games I can get a bit bored...I'd be happy to see a mix of both, a bit more classes and still a main villain but maybe focusing on classes? I'm almost 100% sure they'll add SOME kind of villain/problem because other wise it'd be...a bit boring. But overall I can't wait to see what they do with it :)
If they make it based on the upcoming show, I really, really hope we do not get to play as Harry. We already played as Harry nonstop while growing up. I hope the MC is just a new random student you get to create like in the first HL, and you just get to encounter/interact characters from the books that we already know. Even that isn't ideal I guess because you're already going to know the plot.
Personally, I hope if the game is running alongside the show, we play as more of the background story.
As in.
It took about 4 years to make Hogwarts legacy, from start to release. If they started late last year, that puts Hogwarts legacy 2 on track for a 2029 release window?
With the show releasing next year, by the time 2029 rolls around, we should be on the 3rd book/3rd season of the show if they have a yearly release.
This puts Hogwarts legacy 2 releasing around book 3-4 of the main story.
All that said, I'm hoping, with Warner Bros saying the game will run "alongside" the show, I'm hoping that means, we are maybe someone that works at the ministry. Who knows about Voldemort, who can play different strings regarding the ministry. Meaning we will be older with more access to spells, like being able to produce a patronus. As well as adding new locations that isn't just Hogwarts itself and the surrounding area. Like having the ministry, maybe be able to fly over London? Visit the leaky cauldron?
Just my personal wants. I know many people still want to RP as a student at Hogwarts.
Okay. As much as I wanted to see my character through her next two years of school, I think I can see how this might work. Especially cool if based off prisoner of Azkaban. If we play as a different main character. We still have our own battles and sidequests, and hopefully a main storyline that continues the bit about the ancient magic. Maybe we discover a journal or writings written by our character talking about ancient magic and what we can do with it. But also Harry Potter is one of our friends and we get a quest to help him with dementors and to free Sirius. And maybe a couple favorites from other houses. Maybe we form an uneasy alliance with Draco on a sneaky knockturn alley mission, and help Luna Lovegood hunt for a crumple horned snorkak in the forbidden forest. Maybe we can also team up with Cedric for a mission since he won’t be dead yet.
I would still love a proper Hogwarts student simulator tbh. But yes, if they're not willing to use the Bully formula and build upon it, then I'd rather not be a student at all in that case. I like your idea.

There is no confirmation they are basing on the HBO show……
Don't forget that David Haddad is gone, the current project could take another turn...
Really? I didn’t know that, getting a bit worried…
Based on everything we know so far, there’s a pretty solid chance we’ll get an official announcement for the Hogwarts Legacy sequel sometime in 2025, I think. I’d say the odds are moderate to high. Back in September 2024, WB Games confirmed that a sequel is in active development and that it’s a top priority for them. On top of that, the dev team allegedly scrapped plans for a DLC because the content wasn’t substantial enough to justify a standalone expansion. Only a small team is currently focused on the Switch 2 version of Hogwarts Legacy (which actually drops today), while the rest seem to have moved on to the sequel.
Job listings at Avalanche Software back this up—recent openings for an unannounced AAA title (some dating back to May 2023) mention working on projects tied to existing IP. Pretty safe to say it’s Wizarding World-related. If I had to guess, a late 2025 announcement seems realistic. So while nothing’s official yet, it’s definitely possible that they should be announcing the sequel soon especially when the first game was announced ~2 years before the game is out, albeit the game got delayed. What do you guys think? Is it too soon for an announcement?
I read a story recently that it’s going to be at least a few more years. Lead developer said they’re trying to add at least 15 more balloon based challenges and a longer unskipable cutscene to the Merlin trials.to the sequel, apparently it’s added a lot of time to the development cycle.
Oh god, anything but the Merlin trial cutscenes! 😭
Honestly as long as they flesh out the mc and the character choices a bit more Im very happy for a sequel. I played through twice and I might do a 3rd with my gf
Probably next year since they want to release it with the HBO series.
The HBO Series is 2027
They actually are aiming for 2026, and have yet to give an official release date. Don’t spread misinformation.
it's 2026
Yea but remember hogwarts legacy was announced in September 2020 and only released 3 years later
We're probably years away. Game dev takes a long time.
I'd say the game is still a few years away but who knows honestly
it depends how much they can build ln the previous game.
If they reuse assets and systems it might be sooner - think Fallout 3 vs New Vegas's development times.
I watched what said was the official trailer and it said it was coming out 2025. But then I did some more research and it said that there wasn’t an official trailer yet, I would believe safari but it looked so real
