Since it's halloween and I have nothing to do I decided to play a horror game. Im not a fan of big jumpscare every 15 seconds game but more of psychological horror games. The ones that will mess with you so hard you have to lock your door. I really enjoyed games like emily is missing and the watson scott test. Any games similar to those? I also love games thats played as if you were on a computer. Like the game "Welcome to the game"
If you haven't played them, the Amnesia games are great. The amount of exploration and everchanging atmosphere of them is fantastic and keeps you on your toes. Some of the sounds, like a particular scratching sound when your sanity drains because of the darkness, are haunting and really put you on edge.
Pay attention to verbal stories, read the messages sprawled throughout the levels and pay attention to all of your surroundings to enjoy a very disconcerting experience.

Amnesia Dark Decent, skip Machine for Pigs (different dev), SOMA was their last game.
If you don't mind PS2 style graphics then check out their Penumbra trilogy. The first one I played was only a couple of hours long, but terrifying and it's neat to see where they came from.
Hellblade Senuas sacrifice
Was about to suggest Hellblade too. I'd say it's perfect for such a night and definitely deeper than a random jump scare game. To be fair I wouldn't even call it a horror game, but it's definitely the most unsettling game I've ever seen around and played
The Forest
The forest fucks with me in ways no other game does. I never feel safe. I'm paranoid the entire time. I jump at animals moving thinking it might be a native. And I can't even feel safe in the water due to sharks and a touch of thalassaphobia.
I have still never finished it. Restarted several times and end up noping the fuck out.
For me, there is nothing more terrifying than waking up in the middle of the night and seeing one of those freaky giant mutants stalking around your camp.
My camp was once attacked by one of those things that are basically just a big mass of arms. I thought I was safe in my little treehouse surrounded by a sturdy log wall.
I was wrong. Dead wrong.
Motherfucker bashed through my wall like it was made of toothpicks, then wandered a bit around my treehouse, charging the empty air. I thought, "Hah! Stupid freak, can't get me when I'm up here, can you?"
Then it hit the tree and knocked it down.
Needless to say, I've learned not to fuck with those guys again.

Whenever I’m playing a horror game and I’m forced to make an unreasonable decision for example like: seeing open doors to your apartment and instead of calling the police you have to enter and investigate, I get really angry at my character and I can’t feel scared because instead I just feel rage.
Firstly do you also feel this way ? And do you have some game recommendations where every decision make sense ?
I'm not entirely sure; on the one hand, yes, horror protagonists in any medium can do some stupid shit. On the other hand, there's also a certain amount of buy-in I do when consuming horror media. Would I prefer they behave intelligently? Yes, but it doesn't really get on my nerves unless it's phenomenally stupid.
Using your example, there was a flash horror game called The Ugly, where a girl comes home from school to find her house broken into with no sign of her parents. Door's open. Okay, maybe she looks around. Around the time she finds her dad's severed head, she has no excuse for staying, but there's no option to leave. That really irritated me.

First thing I did was walk to the phone & dial 911, then pound on my windows.
Sure you could argue crawling into the hole is a bad choice, but eventually staying in the apt and you'd starve so may as well go in the hole.
Underrated silent hill game imo, although I think people's opinions are more positive now that there's some distance from the og series release.

In Visage, you go to the front door and it's obvious why you can't get out. It instantly became ten times scarier to me than any game where you can't just leave and your character says something like "I should stay here and figure this out".

I've been getting way more into single-player story games and I've remembered this game I played a while back called Spec Ops: The Line where the story it had just played with you on so many levels making you think you're doing all you can and making good choices while in fact, you were basically the villain of the story and I want something not like that but it just fucks with you mentally (also preferably not that heavy of a game since I'm on holiday and just have my laptop on me)

Visage (PC, Xbox One, Xbox series X/S, PS5, PS4)
The 2nd and 4th ones I find to be the best overall games, but with lacking mechanics, the mechanic for Visage is more of a nuisance, and the sanity in Cthulhu, while scary, still does little other than make jack come to terms with the insane things he has witnessed, and eventually just kill you if you don't try and calm jack down by looking away from whatever is happening that caused the sanity spike or hiding, but the games themselves are top notch.
Silent Hill 2 and SOMA are ones that are pretty psychologically heavy imo!
So a lot of these are either survival horror or storymode type games...
If you don't already know the twists/secrets, the Bioshock games are a lot of fun that way.

SOMA is the way to go. This game's story is so well written and thoughtful that it can give you an existencial crisis by the end of it.
And I would also suggest Shadow of the Colossus and Nier Automata.

Not all horror games scare the same way. Some do me in with just the right jumpscare, others just for the gore, but the ones that really get under my skin are the ones that feel like they’re digging around in your head. It’s the ones I actually like the most since they feel more personal. The ones where the monsters aren’t just there to be scary, they mean something. They represent grief, trauma, guilt... stuff you might not even realize you’re carrying until the game holds up a mirror.
I think we need more games like that and it’s the main reason so many people praise SOMA for example. Ones that treat horror not just as spectacle, but as a lens into the human mind. American McGee’s Alice showed me that madness could be beautiful and tragic. Silent Hill 2 proved that horror can be devastating in a quiet way.
In Sound Mind is an interesting example, as you plays as a therapist going through your patients minds.

What comes to mind is suicide, child loss, animal abuse, severe child abuse, and body horror. The narrator also describes some things in graphic detail.
It's slow but I really enjoyed how messed up the story is.
Haunting Ground or Pathologic 2. Those two make me feel uneasy as anything, even years later.
Seconcing Patho 2. Its one of those games that gets in your head and takes over your brain for days at a time

Honestly, the first 3 Silent Hill games. Not only are they tense and paranoia-inducing, but they are haunting and leave you with a deep sense of unease/creepiness. The stories and plots are absolutely disturbing and deep (especially if you examine all the lore in the games.)
Mamy people wouldn't call these two games horror, but they have theyr reasoning behind it:
1-Voices Of The Void is an indie game that is currently free (pay what you want, but you can also play it for free).
It's ambient horror, you get to work in a station that collects signals from space, occasionally spooky stuff happens, or not, it's more of a life sim than an horror game.
You can microwave popcorns and clean your base with a mop, but you can also run from deathly balls of lightning on a broken down quad, dream about shadow people, eat roaches, fight the trees, fight the sun, fight the water, fight invisibile cats.
Yeah, it's a weird game.
2-this one is weird, the game is This War Of Mine.
This god damn game is the only game ever who actually made me feel sad when a character died.
The music and the way people talked just connected immediately with me, I absolutely recommend to give it a try. Very strong stuff.

I guess you could argue that This War of Mine is not so much a horror game as it is an existential horror game.
It's definitely not a horror game imo, but it creates a level of dread that slowly builds up on par with the best horror games without the relief that a horror game usually throws you at the end of a tense section
This war of mine is a masterpiece. The level of dread it creates trying to save your little community of people when you can tell you'll never quite have enough is something I haven't seen before. I pirated it and then was so blown away I felt compelled to go properly buy it.
Definitely not a horror game but I think that makes it even worse. Combat is terrifying and not exciting, because you'll feel the consequences of any injury for a long time. Fighting for food might kill your best scavenger if they get infected or a broken limb. The slow increase of desperation over months is something that you really feel
100% worth a play, especially for anyone who loves horror games. No jump scares with relief, but it's about as under your skin as a game can get
Yeah that is exactly how I felt playing it, true sadness, not something weirdly forced with a cutscene.
SOMA. Played that game when it first came out nearly 10 years ago and I still think about it. I think about whether I made the right choices, what it means to be human, loneliness… such a profoundly deep experience and the horror of it definitely doesn’t come from cheap jump scares.
I get easily scared, so horror is not my suit. I have once played FEAR 3 at a public computer shop but only because I get to use guns.
I just finished Lucius an hour ago.
It’s one of the main reasons that made the first Amnesia game so fun for me, and the title didn’t lie – it was and I reckon still is one of the better uses of the amnesiac protagonist trope. A bit contrived, the whole deal of “needing to forget in order to be able to achieve a certain goal” but in this case, it just works pretty well. And it makes the creeping reveal of how Daniel was himself involved in the experiments that much more poignant. A Machine for Pigs was also interesting though in retrospect — for more obvious and in-your-face about the implications of what you did, as well as the whole “kill your kids to spare them from WW1”.
SOMA was in my view the “truer” sequel to the original tension of Amnesia, but with upped stakes and much more anxiety floating in the air bubbles (Yeah, excuse the pun). Something about the deep waters is just so Lovecraftian - not the least because, from my understanding, basically up until the 18th century and the whole “leisure” culture of the upper class, the seas were always seen as something dark, foreboding and not made for humans. The game isn’t about that, but it simulates that atmosphere about being in this dark space, with so much weighing on your shoulders (well, the future of mankind no less - at least it isn’t in-your-face about this immediately)... it’s just phenomenal in simulating that dread of being in a truly unenviable position, a brain taken to the future to another body — and at the end, literally disembodied, uploaded into a simulation while the real you is left in the darkness of the deeps. Scary stuff, but a not-in-your-face scary that only gets scarier the more you think about it before going to bed. Also, great story in general.
In all honesty, even non horror games that include amnesia, mental shock or some sort of impactful trauma have this effect on me, a kind of feeling of starting from scratch but also carrying this unknown burden that you can’t measure from the start. Disco Elysium is a nice example of what I mean. But also some unexpected games where I have to withhold judgement until they see the light of release, like Endless Night: The Darkness Within, particularly cuz it’s a metroidvania overlaid with psychological, dark themes and trauma metaphors representing bosses and enemies taken straight from your sick brain. I mean, I like the premise and wish more platformers did more subtle horror like this (haven’t seen many attempts at horror at all in the platforming subgenre ever since Carrion)

I feel this. SOMA and Disco Elysium are my favorite narrative games, hands down. I’ve never truly stopped playing those games - I revisit them frequently and think about them constantly. I love SOMA so much that I dug around in the files to find transcripts of the subtitles.
I just finished the Silent Hill 2 remake and HIGHLY recommend it. Spooky, atmospheric, and compelling. When I completed that game I immediately started a New Game+. I don’t think I’ve ever done that. I’m also concurrently playing the original. I’m sorta obsessed with this game now.

There are aspects of Dredge that reminded me of amnesia; You can't remember who you are but seem to have a connection to the unnatural horrors that are slowly overtaking the setting, you have to manage your sanity or start hallucinating which changes the gameplay, and (major spoilers) >!to get the good ending you have to stop a ritual from happening, sacrificing yourself in the process!<. You can figure out who you are way before the end but there were still some twists I didn't expect.
Dredge was actually one of those games I got with no expectations, but it turned out amazing. Really, it was the only game that managed to fuse some cozy elements with a Lovecraftian theme and make it work though it's essentially - what - a fishing game? Which is really misleading since there was much more under the surface of it

I’m a horror connoisseur, it’s hard for me to get scared. Movies don’t do it, jump scares in games rarely get me. I want a game that will psychologically mess with me. I want the rush of horror that I felt as a kid. Not just cheap jump scares and half assed creepy settings. Outlast was pretty decent, but didn’t really mess with me. Gore and stuff like that doesn’t really get to me. Any good suggestions? Paranormal kind of stuff preferred, but if there’s something outside of that subject I’m 100% ok with trying it out.
Phasmophobia is a goated game for scares.
At Dead of night is jumpscare heavy but it’s such an enjoyable experience imo.

Phas is also a blast for procedural nerds. You really get that routine of being a ghost detective down lol. I’d also recommend visage, it’s not strictly pc but visuals are much nicer on pc think it runs at a crunchy 30fps on console lol. Game hits everyone different. Different sections are scarier than others depending on what you find scary is both jump scary and psychologically scary plus it gives that deep feel of dread that so few games do well.

The Mortuary Assistant. Not much gets me too, but I enjoy "horror" games. This one is definitely creepy. The randomness of it all. I haven't played much but it was great.

... at the same time, this game seems really hit or miss for many people... it's kinda niche since it's essentially a "Job Simulator" and you stay inside the same tiny building (although I never understood how that was different from a spooky house or asylum etc)
The one horror movie that got to me was the autopsy of Jane doe. I’d love to play mortuary assistant, but I’ve watched so many play throughs and clips that I doubt there’d be any new content for me. Might give it a shot just to see if playing it myself gives me an interesting experience.

I’ve played bunker, enjoyed the concept. Story was good as well. The chases got me at first but after a bit it just kind of became routine.
Alien: Isolation is pretty epic. I never played it on PC though.
I'm not interested in jumpscare horror like Resident Evil or Outlast, or stuff like Dead Space. I'm looking for games that scare you by being deeply disturbing due to the themes and how they're told. It can be any type of psychological horror but I'm primarily interested in ones that focus on mental health.
It doesn't have to be horror, it could be something that is just disturbing in a less horror-adjacent way.
I've been playing the Silent Hill games, so that's the sort of stuff I'd be more interested in. Pretty low on jumpscares but they disturb you by putting you in a really uncomfortable headspace, so stuff like that.

Not scary at all, but has a super good story, and there is one section of the game that is heavy on mental health. One of the best indies I’ve played and I wish I could find another like it.
