TL;DR
Silent Hill Series
The Silent Hill series, particularly Silent Hill 2, is frequently mentioned as having one of the best storylines in horror gaming. It is celebrated for its emotional depth and psychological horror elements that leave a lasting impact on players [1]
[4:4]. The series is known for exploring complex themes such as guilt, trauma, and redemption, making it a staple recommendation for those seeking a rich narrative experience.
SOMA
SOMA stands out for its philosophical narrative, tackling existential questions about consciousness and identity. It's often recommended for its thought-provoking storyline that challenges players' perceptions of reality and humanity [4:6]. SOMA's ability to blend horror with deep storytelling makes it a unique experience that resonates with many players
[5:3].
Alan Wake
Alan Wake offers a different kind of horror experience, focusing more on atmospheric tension rather than gore or jump scares. Its narrative is reminiscent of Hitchcock thrillers, providing a compelling story that keeps players engaged [2:1]
[3:2]. The game's sequel, Alan Wake 2, continues to build on this strong foundation, further immersing players in its captivating universe
[2:5].
Other Notable Mentions
Several other games are highlighted for their engaging storylines:
These games offer a range of storytelling styles, from psychological horror to atmospheric thrillers, catering to various preferences within the horror genre.
im looking for a horror game with an amazing story. im not huge into horror so i havent played many, but i have played silent hill 1-3 and soma and i can say the silent hills and soma are some of the best stories ive ever seen in general. what other horror games would u say could compete with those 2 games?
I was going to recommend soma lol
I enjoyed Prey a lot! And if you've never played it Bioshock is an absolute must. It's one of my favorite games of all time, excellent story.
i love bioshock. ive seen prey back when it released but conpletelt forgot about it. ill look into it some more
Play "Alien Isolation"! It's honestly one of my favorite video games ever. It's damn near perfect. The story is stellar, the Alien has almost made me poop myself countless times. Like it'll learn how you stay alive, such as if you like to use the vents, eventually it'll be in the vents waiting for you. It's bonkers, but so fun
Until dawn is just a straight up good time
The Last of Us 1 and 2.
Dead Space.
Oh man do I miss Dead Space 1&2. Never got to play the 3rd one
3rd was kind of a let down imo. Too much action not enough spoops.
Fatal Frame series. Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly is one of my all time favorite games.
Oh i miss these. Used to gather around these with friends and basically rach play chicken with our bladders.
We played one of them one night in our literal former sanitorium school thata famlus for being haunted. Did on the winter solstice, longest night if the year baay-beeee!
Seriously! Playing the first 3 games in the series especially is probably the best choice a gamer could make. The storylines are just *muah, chef's kiss*
The 4th game is just as good but only really playble if you've got a wii
The evil whit in
I feel like i've played every great horror game out there. None of them rlly scare me anymore but Ive fallen in love with emotional Silent Hill 2 was and the feeling after completing the game a few times. I want something that has that feeling, I've been through cry of fear and tbh i thought it was a bit overhyped.
Still Wakes the Deep
I wouldn't call it story rich but the atmosphere is phenomenal. It is a walking Sim for the most part. I wanted something "chill" to play and loved it. Story is basically just to survive but the characters, setting, sound, and visuals bring it to life big time
True, the story is pretty bare, but it's elevated by the character performances.
I love yhis game so much, finished it in 2 days, the atmosphere, the quality is amazing. Didn't love the story but it was decent but just because of the atmosphere this game should be played!
The entire Metro 2033 franchise
The franchise is based on a book, very content rich and awesome story
Story aside, the gunplay is silky smooth, the exploration is rewarding and the scares are top notch
And the graphics are gorgeous
When Metro 2033 came out its slogan was "Fear the Future" and it wasnt a lie
In terms of similar games, i'd say it bears a family resemblance to similar to games from around the same time period as the 1st game:
Alan Wake 2
This. I couldn't play anything at all after finishing AW2. It's that good. Especially if you love this universe from first AW.
I've been a fan of Alan Wake since the original came out back in the Xbox 360 days, so I really loved the 2nd one especially because I never thought we'd ever get a sequel...no less the gem that we actually did, which made it even better. Amazing game from top to bottom.
I’d assume this the winner as far as modern stuff goes
Wut
it's only 5.99 on Steam
Signalis.
Craving some horror games before Elden Ring drops. So far looking at Alien Isolation and Prey (2017). open to indie horror games and ps2 horror games as well. the only requirement being it either needs to have a great story or a great premise.
Alan Wake, but it more atmospheric horror like Hitchcock thrillers, rather than gore or slashers. Great story, sub genre defining.
Amnesia: Dark Descent - great plot, great scare.
' open to indie horror games ' . Check out Love, Sam
Martha is dead!
Until Dawn
If you're counting Prey as horror, then I'll gladly nominate BioShock for this as well in case you haven't played it. The whole series is great, but the first game is my favorite, and it absolutely walks that line of horror like Prey does.
I also think The Evil Within and SOMA both have a very compelling/interesting narrative going on, especially for horror games. I thought Layers of Fear was pretty interesting once you start piecing together what's happening. It's not that scary really, and it seems to be way more hit-or-miss for most people, but I enjoyed The Medium's story as well.
I haven't played Alien Isolation, but I know a lot of people love it. No idea how great its story is, but I see a lot of praise for the game itself on here.
The games can really be on any platform, i just want the game to have a good story while still being scary.
Games i've played and liked:
Re4 Remake
Dead Space Remake
Devotion
TWD Telltale series
Alan Wake 2
The Quarry
Until Dawn
A bit of Re7
If you have any other games i could try that'd be great
The Evil Within series (RIP Tango)
Prey
Amnesia series
Alien Isolation
**Forgot to add Tormented Souls.
I thought the evil within series had a laughably bad plot. Super fun action, but not what I would recommend based on OP's query.
The first Evil Within was laughably bad. But The Evil Within 2 was a big improvement. I was surprised how much I enjoyed its story.
The Evil Within was a great game with not enough attention.
Amnesias lore is something else man, love those games.
I hate to always bring it up... but Silent Hill 2.
Greatest horror game of all time
best video game story of all time imo
SOMA has one of the best stories in all of gaming
The Thing shouldn't get to have a monopoly on eldritch horror. Why play a walking simulator if you hate them so much?
Little Nightmares 1 and 2. Very cute characters in a creepy world. Heartbreaking and emotional story.
Seconding. Amazingly tense while revealing the story too. Great atmosphere and design.
Here is a list of games that I've played and loved
Days Gone, The Last Of Us , Evil Within , Evil Within2, Resident Evil 7 (Biohazard), Resident Evil 2 (Remake), Bioshock, Dying Light.
I really like horror games in general, but I've also had fun with games like Horizon Zero Dawn and Overwatch. What I'm looking for are games that are immersive and atmospheric, with a decent story and the ability to roam a little bit at your own pace. I've played a bunch of the Resident evil games and didn't kine the gimmickiness of 5/6, those felt like COD or something - which is fine but not what I'm looking for.
I'm considering SOMA, Dishonored 1/2, and bioshock 2/3 atm.
Any suggestions for games like these that I might have missed will be fantastic.
I don't think this 100% falls in line with these other games, but since it's free, I'm gonna put it out there anyway. If you haven't checked out Serena I'd say give it a shot. It's very story focus with little gameplay. You're in a cabin listening and understand the story by clicking on objects for than once. I think it's a good suspenseful experience.
These might fit more with games like Evil Within and Resident Evil; Layers of Fear, Outlast, and Devotion.
Vampyr is another game I'm looking to playing myself. It gives off a Bioshock/Dishonored vibe but I'm not too sure.
{Clive Barker's Undying}
{Dark Messiah of Might and Magic}

Outlast - you kinda have to follow where they want you to go. Can’t do a whole lot of exploring. However, it’s an amazing game with an amazing story. It will keep you immersed and scared! It’s one of my favorites.
Hey there yall, I am sure this has been asked before but I didn't see any. Anyways, I am looking for some good horror games that have a good story that are available on steam. Certain games I have played already are MiSide and The Blair Witch. I started looking through the horror category but couldn't really seem to catch my eye and thought here would be a good place to ask.
I’m not sure if they’re considered horror or not but I just recently finished playing Alan Wake and Alan wake 2, both are great and psychological (aw2 is actually quite scary to me)
Killer Frequency is one of my favorite games. It has the richest characters I've ever seen, and the game scares you by putting them in threatening situations (the main character is never in danger)
I finished it like a week ago and I also have to recommend this one. Had been a while since I felt so immersed in a game. I feel like it mixes the whole "analog horror" genre with an interactive environment and really makes you feel like a charismatic radio host.
To me the characters are the crucks of it. The game is only scary because you love Roller Ricky, and if he died it would hurt you
I can’t vouch enough for Silent Hill 2 remake.
SOMA if you want a game that will make you question your existence.
Soma will always be in my top 3 favour video game stories
I second this emotion.
Thirding it!
Sounds like a good time I will look into that.
Kinda more mystery but it did make me shout in my house a couple times, the excavation of hobbs barrow. That game made me feel an uneasiness and slow dread that mixed with a couple other factors really sent me on a fun trip. Like I talked about it so much my roommates don’t wanna fuckin hear it anymore lol
I feel like most of the indie horror games I’ve been playing recently have been interesting gameplay ideas but a kinda bare bones plot if any real story at all. I’m looking for something like DDLC or milk inside/outside a bag of milk, or some chila’s art games, or signalis. REPO is cool and all but I want games that really horrifies me through story and atmosphere. (Bonus points if they’re cheap, I’m broke as shit)
It's more horror adjacent than proper scary, but Inscryption is truly special.
Here's a couple free options. Pleh! has you play through cutscenes and unfinished demos to get a glimpse into a game developer's depression. It's not too horrifying, but the idea is relatively unique. (I say relatively because there's a few other indie titles with the same premise.)
Another interesting one is Perfect Vermin. You run around a building looking for "vermin" and smashing them within the time limit. As you progress, you start to see what this gameplay really represents.
Saturnalia.
Franbow
DREDGE
Not technically a horror game, more a dread game.
Great story
I'm talkin Alan Wake 2, Silent Hill 2, random indie you've never heard of-level narratives. Games that can destroy your brain and leave you feeling like you just finished something monumental. Lore that you cannot believe humans came up with. I'm definitely using this as inspiration but would like to see the discussion as well
Haunting Ground
Silent Hill 4
Resident Evil 7
Evil Within 2
Soma
Sweet Home
Parasite Eve
Soma
The Mortuary Assistant
Calling
Crow Country
I didn't play it, but I watched a playthrough of Still Wakes the Deep and it had a great story. Would have made an amazing movie.
The ending in Soma gave me an existential crisis.
Well, I’m alone there now. In our special place. Waiting for you…
SOMA
There are horror games that make you jump and then there are those that get under your skin, burrow into your brain, and stay there long after you've closed the game. Darkwood is the latter. A survival horror that doesn’t rely on cheap jumpscares—because it doesn’t need to.
You wake up in a rotting, abandoned world, trapped in a twisted forest that hates you. Every night, the horrors lurking in the dark grow closer, whispering just outside your barricaded doors, testing your defenses. You can never be sure if they’ll stay outside… or if they’re already in the room with you.
But Darkwood isn’t just about surviving the night. It’s about losing your sanity bit by bit. The more you explore, the more you realize this world isn’t just dangerous—it’s sick. People don’t live here; they decay, mutate, become something else. The game’s grotesque inhabitants tell half-truths, their faces warped into expressions of pain, madness or something worse. Every decision you make shapes the world, but you’re never sure if you’re doing the right thing—or if there even is a right thing.
Darkwood is loneliness, dread and paranoia turned into a game. It’s a nightmare you survive, but never truly escape.
Have you ever played a horror game that really stuck with you? Tell us about your experiences in this cursed place—after all, everyone has their own unique story ang gameplay, they rarely repeat.

Mamy people wouldn't call these two games horror, but they have theyr reasoning behind it:
1-Voices Of The Void is an indie game that is currently free (pay what you want, but you can also play it for free).
It's ambient horror, you get to work in a station that collects signals from space, occasionally spooky stuff happens, or not, it's more of a life sim than an horror game.
You can microwave popcorns and clean your base with a mop, but you can also run from deathly balls of lightning on a broken down quad, dream about shadow people, eat roaches, fight the trees, fight the sun, fight the water, fight invisibile cats.
Yeah, it's a weird game.
2-this one is weird, the game is This War Of Mine.
This god damn game is the only game ever who actually made me feel sad when a character died.
The music and the way people talked just connected immediately with me, I absolutely recommend to give it a try. Very strong stuff.
This War of Mine is such a good pick. My first response was "that's not a horror game" but thinking about it, it absolutely is.
I guess you could argue that This War of Mine is not so much a horror game as it is an existential horror game.
It's definitely not a horror game imo, but it creates a level of dread that slowly builds up on par with the best horror games without the relief that a horror game usually throws you at the end of a tense section
This war of mine is a masterpiece. The level of dread it creates trying to save your little community of people when you can tell you'll never quite have enough is something I haven't seen before. I pirated it and then was so blown away I felt compelled to go properly buy it.
Definitely not a horror game but I think that makes it even worse. Combat is terrifying and not exciting, because you'll feel the consequences of any injury for a long time. Fighting for food might kill your best scavenger if they get infected or a broken limb. The slow increase of desperation over months is something that you really feel
100% worth a play, especially for anyone who loves horror games. No jump scares with relief, but it's about as under your skin as a game can get
Yeah that is exactly how I felt playing it, true sadness, not something weirdly forced with a cutscene.
SOMA. Played that game when it first came out nearly 10 years ago and I still think about it. I think about whether I made the right choices, what it means to be human, loneliness… such a profoundly deep experience and the horror of it definitely doesn’t come from cheap jump scares.
I get easily scared, so horror is not my suit. I have once played FEAR 3 at a public computer shop but only because I get to use guns.
I just finished Lucius an hour ago.
Honestly, the first 3 Silent Hill games. Not only are they tense and paranoia-inducing, but they are haunting and leave you with a deep sense of unease/creepiness. The stories and plots are absolutely disturbing and deep (especially if you examine all the lore in the games.)
