What Redditors are Saying

How Did Hashirama, the First Hokage, Die?

TL;DR Hashirama's death remains a mystery with no definitive explanation in the manga or anime. Theories range from natural causes to illness or exhaustion from his abilities.

Natural Causes and Illness

Many fans speculate that Hashirama died of natural causes, possibly due to an illness [1:1], [2:2]. Some suggest he may have suffered from a chakra sickness similar to other powerful characters like Naruto [2:4], [2:8]. This theory aligns with the idea that his immense regenerative abilities could have shortened his lifespan [2:8], [3:12].

Death During War

Another prevalent theory is that Hashirama died during the First Shinobi World War [1:2], [2:6], [4:2]. However, it is unclear whether he died as a direct result of battle or due to other circumstances during the war [1:3], [5:3].

Theories and Speculation

Several speculative theories exist about Hashirama's death. Some fans humorously suggest scenarios such as being killed by Black Zetsu [2:3], or even tripping into a wood chipper [4:2]. Others propose that his death was due to the exhaustion of his regenerative capabilities [2:8] or because he wanted to be sealed to prevent wars over his cells [5:4].

Lack of Canon Explanation

Ultimately, there is no canon explanation for Hashirama's death in the manga or anime [1:4], [4:6]. The creator, Kishimoto, did not provide a detailed account, leaving fans to theorize based on available information and character lore [5:5].

Most likely natural causes, Madara didn't kill him and they showed how insanely OP a weakened reanimated Madara so it's heavy implied he died of natural causes even if it wasn't of old age, kind of like Itachi (ninja aids)

Hashirama was the strongest ninja of his age. His regeneration, life force and medical ninjutsu were unmatched. So how did he die? When he was reanimated, he looks to be 30-40, and looks the same as when he found the leaf village. It is not exactly known how long he served as Hokage, but speculation is between 5-10 years. So we know it wasn’t from old age, because he would come back old like Hiruzen did.

I think it could have been a Chakra sickness. Usually those appear in Jinchuriki, but Hashirama had about the same amount of Chakra as war arc Kcm2 Naruto, the strongest Jinchuriki.

What are your thoughts/theories?

We don’t know. I think the data books mentioned early during the first shinobi Great War while the anime stated natural causes. More than likely he exhausted the limits of his regen and it shortened his life.

Tsunade said he died for the village and the book says he died in the war. He died in battle.

The assumption people go with is that he hit the natural limit of his telomeres. His cells could no longer divide to keep up with his god like regeneration so he died from over use. That is the theory, but if you look at his body he died young.

Another is he died from he same thing that Haguromo and Naruto suffered from the made up chakra illness that states if your mana pool is too big you get the ninja aids that magically nerfs you.

In reality Kishimoto left it as an unsolved plot.

I don't think he died in battle, since the man who killed Hashirama would have become widely known in all the shinobi war.

So the idea of some chakra sickness could be fitting... Perhaps his final confrontation against Madara was to taxing that after that Hashirama was left as a shell of his former self, basically living on a borrowed time.

Or Black Zetsu shanked him in his sleep.

He was so far ahead of his contemporaries that I see no reason that he couldn't quell every war and ensure peace (which Zetsu, needing pawns driven by grief and nihilism, doesn't want).

So, the man who can infiltrate any place decides to put a pre-emptive stop to this problem before he can create peace (probably after Madara, the definitive no. 2 and the guy who's meant to be doing everything, loses and is crippled).

No matter who you are, a fist through the brain (while asleep and off-guard) is lethal

A lot of things he retcon in the first part of the Naruto story. Kishi writes good and great and strong characters and doesn't know how to manage them in the long run. A lot of side characters are much better than Boruto or Sasuke for example.

How would you feel if they made a movie, manga explaining how Hashirama died?

Posted by Opposite-Craft-3498 · in r/Naruto · 3 months ago

Would it make sense to create a movie about Hashirama’s final days? They never really explained how the First Hokage died. The problem is, Hashirama was so powerful that it’s hard to imagine anyone but Madara being able to kill him. So the writers would probably need to come up with something unexpected — maybe he died from an illness, or his constant use of self-healing jutsu shortened his lifespan. Maybe it was some kind of chakra-related illness. How would you guys kill him off.He obviously didn't die of old age, based on his Edo Tensei appearance, which seems to indicate he was in his 30s or 40s."

From Chapter 382, in which Jiraiya discusses the value of a shinobi's death based on their accomplishments before death, we can draw a few conclusions.

First, Jiraiya regrets being rejected by Tsunade, the woman he loved. Hashirama had Mito and a loving family. This means he succeeded here. She lived long enough after his death.

The second of Jiraiya's regrets is: He wanted to stop his friend, Orochimaru. Hashirama accomplished this by killing Madara and protecting Konoha.

Third, Jiraya's regret was that he was unable to protect his master and sensei. Hashirama never had a master that we know of, but he established the village system and left everything to the new generation. His brother became the next Hokage, meaning that while he was alive, he managed to sustain peace. All the Shinobi Wars occurred after his death.

In conclusion, I think Hashirama probably died from shortening his life. That's how Tsunade found out about it in the first place. If Hashirama died tragically, that would be another tragic death in her backstory, like Dan and Nawaki. So, he died among his loving family and in the village where he was deeply respected. It was a death worthy of a person to be called the god of shinobi. He achieved a lot and faced his death naturally, unlike others who died sacrificing themselves. (Or, you could interpret this as that Hashirama sacrificed everything for the prosperity of Konoha) Thus, there is no legend of his death.

Radiant_Doughnut2112 · 3 months ago

Stop making shit up, thanks. Hashirama had nothing that would shorten his life.

His literally granddaughter gave as a reasoning as to why Madara would be able to live for as long as he did is because maybe the cells of Hashirama he has granted him a similar absurd lifespan like Hashirama.

Kakashi_Senju · 3 months ago

Except we literally get told by Tsunade her healing shortens her life And Madara said Hashirama could heal on the level of Byakgou without handseal

So either you're assuming Hashirama had some perfect healing techinique that both fix the flaws and did a better version of Byakgou

Or the unintended consequence of his insane healing factor was a shorten life where even though he like Tsunade looked very long he actual was very much older then he looked

1 upvotes on reddit
buy_one_get_one_free · 3 months ago

Honestly, it’s wild that we still don’t know how Hashirama died. Dude was literally the god of shinobi, solo’d Madara with the Nine Tails, invented modern medical ninjutsu by accident, and had a kekkei genkai so broken Orochimaru spent decades trying to copy it. And we’re supposed to believe he just... died off-screen?

No way this man died in a fair fight. No one else in that era was on his level. Either he died from overusing his own absurd regen abilities (which would be poetic, sure), or something shady went down—maybe political betrayal, forbidden jutsu, even a karma-style consequence from overusing natural energy.

But yeah, a movie showing his final days, the fallout of the Madara conflict, the politics of founding Konoha, his mental state, and eventual death? That would print money and give his character real closure beyond the "humble wood ninja Buddha" image.

And let’s be real: there’s no way this man died from something mundane. If Kishimoto or the anime team ever tackle it, it needs to be mythic, tragic, and tied to the toll of being too powerful in a world not ready for peace.

Tsunade originally refused to become Hokage due in part to her "grandfather dying to protect the village" and we also know he died during the first Shinobi war because Tobirama also died during the first Shinobi war.

Considering he remembers spoiling a 5yo Tsunade, I like to assume he wasn't younger than 45 actually, though I take into possibility teenage pregancies at the time.

Anyway, back to the point of the post? YES, I'd very much like to know more about Hashirama's story. The more the better, since the only thing we were given is his relationship with Madara.

15 upvotes on reddit
ThatIslandGuy8888 · 3 months ago

Exactly he looks like he died young but for the timeline to make sense he had to at least reach his 40s. On that note Tobirama didn’t really age that much more than him so his his reign as Second had to be one of the shorter ones.

So the only running theory is that he died as a result of his insane regeneration. Madara compared Tsunade's 100 Healings to Hashirama's base healing factor.

The implication we've come to is that over his years of combat and multiple wars he sustained sp much damage that his natural life span was severally cut, similar to how 100 healings works.

The only guy during their time that could've killed him was Madara, even if every other Kage came at him it wouldn't have worked.

13 upvotes on reddit

JediKnight94 · 3 years ago

What? You mean to tell us the god of shinobi was strong enough to body Madara and full Kurama together and only end up with a damaged arm....but somehow he was still wounded so much in his life by fodders that his own healing factor killed him?

That theory makes no sense.

Hashirama's cells are so powerful that they divided nonstop for at least 18 years to form and create the 100K Zetsu army. They're so potent that a technique like Kotoamatsukami goes from a single use 10 year cool down....to once per day.

Plus how the hell do you die from a disease wearing full battle armor? The reanimated are revived exactly how they died (baring modification). Hashirama was revived in his full battle armor, with his weapons, scrolls, and all. That sounds like he died fighting in combat. Not on some hospital bed with ninja cancer.

-4 upvotes on reddit
D
Dannyson97 · 3 years ago

You make no sense.

What about it makes doesn't make sense? Hashirama spent most of his life fighting since he was a child, and he wasn't infallible. Even if Madara was the only who was on his level, Madara himself says that the average shinobi in their days was significantly stronger, even going as far to say that there were Taijutsu users on 7th Gate Guy level everywhere.

Even if Hashirama only ever suffered minor wounds from his childhood to adulthood the damage would add up if he's constantly regenerating. Especially if he was fighting Madara every other week, his battles with Madara where they're carving fucking valleys, Hashirama is gonna get hurt.

Also you bring up that he only had a broken arm but then completely forget the fact that he's always healing, in other words he likely suffered far worse damage but then just kept healing until he was put of chakra. Unless you think Madara literally couldn't touch Hashirama. Very selective reasoning.

Continuing on, you bring up that he comes back in his Edo Tensie form in armor but then you forget that Orochimaru can bring him back in any state he wants. He isn't gonna bring him back in his funeral clothes, hell he LITERALLY changes there appearance while fighting Hiruzen. Even more when Madada comes back Kabuto doesn't bring back as a old man in robes, he brings him back in his prime.

Also what the fuck are you on about with cancer? It isn't cancer, the way 100 healings work is that it doesn't heal it literally just accelerates cell growth go replace it. I.E Ages you faster to replace what's dead, which is why it shortens your life span. Again Oro isn't gonna bring back Hashirama as an old man.

Ninja aids.

Joking aside, he was introduced as an already dead character. Kishimoto did not have the idea that this character could make wood golems, dragons, regenerate and summon a gargantuan Buddha statues that god-smacks the Earth 10,000 times per second when he wrote that he died during the beginning of the first world war.

Kishimoto isn't going to bother to explain how a guy so powerful died relatively young. Just headcanons left. It could be a disease that got him. Some people think he suffered from shortening telomeres with his regen ability (I doubt he was getting hurt so frequently given his immense skill level). Could be of a broken heart when Madara left the village for all we know.

19 upvotes on reddit
jimmytbra · 6 years ago

Yep. When kishi wrote the 1st he didn't intend him to be the god of shinobi ect. That was added later when writing part 2. If they ever write a prequel series, i hope they go with that he died from over use of the regen technique while fighting madara. After madara dies he finds out he has cancer or something and slowely gets sick and passes away.

I think overuse of the wood style jutsu and the over use of his ability to regenerate, which is related to his wood style.

We know Tsunades mitonic regeneration is a double edge jutsu. It takes life away from the use because the cells are being forced to split and regenerate. She cut her life span each time she used it.

Now imagine the level and effect hashiramas jutsu has on him.

I believe he ran out his natural life span and died peacefully.

The only theory that makes sense would be his own overuse of his healing jutsu that was similar go Tsunades 100 healings jutsu. The constant battling from years of clan war and harsh battles of Madara would shorten his life span leading to his death early from natural causes.

Any one killing Hashirama is insane as he was capable of battling multiple Tailed beasts at once. Even if all the other kage tried to kill him he would be to take them on.

A natural death would explain why his death wasn't talked about or mentioned as anyone who killed Hashirama would no doubt be mentioned. And his death from the overuse of 100 healings would explain Tsunades knowledge of the techniques drawback.

With Hashirama, we have nothing outside of 1 databook statement saying that he died during war. It’s really hard to imagine a scenario where hashirama actually died in battle so he may have sacrificed himself and chose to die for whatever reason. You kind of have to use your imagination.

Madaras MS ability is never mentioned in canon. We only have a non canon scene in one of the storm games where he is capable of rewinding time with his MS. If that was actually his ability then it kind of makes sense that kishimoto never bothered having madara use it. Madara already had every single ability you could imagine and was getting one power up after another and adding time manipulation on top of it would be ridiculous, it would also make the whole zetsu betrayal plot way worse than it already is since kishimoto would also have to come up with a random ass explanation as to why Madara couldn’t have turned back time

Ninja AIDS is also a convenient and straightforward way to kill off overpowered Characters without having to think of a way for them to get beaten (Kimmimaro/Itachi) so he could have always caught that too while fighting in a war.

Or maybe Madara was using his ms the entire time and it just wasn't shown ( maybe why they picked that as his ms for the game)

The common fan theory is that Hashi just overextended his regeneration(due to Tsunade’s mitotic regen shortening her life span) and basically had a chakra heart attack.

My theory on hashi's death is that he killed himself out of depression due to the untimely death of his lover Madara.

Not knowing how Hashirama died is whatever. We don't know how lots of characters in the series actually died. But Madara's MS not being revealed is inexcusable and one my biggest hangups w/ the series. Obito, Itachi, and Shisui have insanely OP abilities. And even Sasuke's abilities, while not as potent as the ones I mentioned, are still really good. Like flames that don't burn out and can be manipulated into different shapes? And that's the weakest ability we've seen from the MS. I would rather Susanoo not get that complete body and Madara just use some OP MS abilities than what we got. It would make more sense. Susanoo is just a poor man's tailed beast after all.

Susano'o turning into a gundam suit was kinda dumb I'll agree. I definitely would rather Madara had some crazy MS ability instead of pulling a gundam out of his ass lol.

And then suddenly all the Uchiha had gundam suits... I really wasn't fond of perfect Susano'o...

Hell Kakashi Mastering Susanoo was the Worst part of The Kaguya Arc like seriously he just gets the Other Mangekyo and suddenly he’s Flying around in a Grey Gundam
