What Redditors are Saying

Who Was the Second Hokage?

TL;DR The Second Hokage was Tobirama Senju.

Tobirama Senju's Contributions

Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, played a significant role in shaping the village of Konoha. He is credited with laying the foundation for Konoha's success by implementing various systems and policies [4:1]. Tobirama was known for his resourcefulness and relentless efforts to strengthen the village, even when faced with challenges such as the Uchiha clan [4:8].

Sacrifice and Legacy

While Tobirama's sacrifice isn't detailed extensively in the discussions, his contributions to the village are well-recognized. He created several techniques, including the Impure World Reincarnation (Edo Tensei), which later became pivotal in the series [1:10]. His strategic thinking and leadership helped establish a strong foundation that future Hokages could build upon [4:1].

Impact on Future Generations

Tobirama's influence extended beyond his tenure as Hokage. He was instrumental in creating systems that would govern the village and its ninja, ensuring stability and growth. His work paved the way for subsequent Hokages to lead effectively, contributing to the village's resilience and prosperity [4:1].

Controversies and Challenges

Despite his accomplishments, Tobirama's decisions were not without controversy. His policies towards the Uchiha clan, for example, were seen as discriminatory and contributed to tensions within the village [5:4]. Nonetheless, his pragmatic approach to leadership and governance left a lasting impact on Konoha.

Uh, Minato didn't have to sacrifice himself, Kushina offered to seal the Ninetails herself... Which actually wouldve been the happiest ending since then they both would've lived, or at least had chances since they had gaping holes in their stomachs from Kurama claws.

actuallly minato would have died anyways because he was using the death reaper seal to seal half of kurama in naruto that's why he died immediately after the seal was complete and only kusina was alive to tell the 3rd hokage that babys name , NARUTO !!!!

Minato. Due to the fact that Kurama would have nuked that place again.

Hiruzen a close second cause if he didn’t stall and take Orochimaru arms, who knows how much havoc. Hashirama, Tobirama, Orochimaru and the Sound Four would have caused in the village.

Konoha reinstated Hiruzen as Hokage after Minato's death during the Kyubi attack because the village was in immediate crisis and needed proven leadership. And even if prime Hiruzen, as powerful as he was with the support of the ANBU, couldn’t stop the Kyubi rampage, it was clear there was no stronger candidate left to lead especially with the village’s hero already dead.

Minato himself later admitted, upon being revived, that he died too early to truly protect and lead the village. With no clear successor ready, the Sanin despite being strong were still too inexperienced and Orochimaru already defected at the time.

Hiruzen was the only one with the strength, experience, and authority to guide Konoha. The wisdom of that decision proved to be true when he sacrifice himself to stop Orochimaru’s invasion. Had it been someone less capable, Konoha might have fallen that day.

It wasn’t that the Sannin weren’t ready or anything. Tsunade wasn’t in the village. Dan had died by then and she was out gambling and drinking herself to death.

And Jiraiya just simply said no. The only logical choice was Hiruzen, no one else had the power and knowledge to be able to lead the village except maybe Fugaku.

115 upvotes on reddit
CptJacksp · 4 months ago

Fugaku would probably have been a pretty good Hokage. He had 2 kids, seemed pretty contemplative, not prone to rash decision making, and would have cemented the Leaf’s relationship with the Uchiha clan.

You might have still had all that shit that went down with Obito/Kushina, but Fugaku could have easily handled Kyuubi, and with Minato being able to just take care of Kushina during the pregnancy, (plus a couple extra guards since she is the Jinchuriiki), it’s very possible that things would have been completely fine.

Akatsuki were strong, and all, but Orochimaru would have been screwed if Fugaku and Minato had survived so he couldn’t have killed the Kazekage or started shit with the leaf village.

Yet again, Hiruzen’s choices doomed the leaf village

If Hiruzen wasnt an idiot he would have pushed for Fugaku anyways, sure the Uchiha have some herditary manic shit going on but Fugaku was like Shisui and Itachi loyal to the village and the only person left that was Minato tier. If he was incharge you dont get the coupe, Danzo was the issue there.

The real question (and I say this as a rabid Shikamaru fan) would be why the heck didn't they put Kakashi back in charge instead of Shikamaru in Boruto.

Seeing Shikamaru as (acting) Hokage is really cool but it feels like Ikemoto decided to delete Kakashi (and probably Tsunade, too) so he could put him in that position without fans making the question.

Shikamaru was the right hand of both Kakashi and Naruto, so he was a good option for acting Hokage.

Orchimaru is shocked when instead of the first Hokage it's Mito that gets revived.

"We kinda ran out of his body after all the experiments so to make people not angry we buried his wife in that coffin." Hiruzen says as Mito and Tobirama are preforming the handsigns to be free of the control of Edo Tensei.

"Who's the current Jinchuriki?" Mito asks.

"That would be Naruto Uzumaki Kushina's son." Hiruzen says as Mito summons a fox or a slug and makes a seal with her soul in it to talk to Naruto.

Might need an extra great seeing as Tsunade is their grand daughter and she is 40 years older than Naruto.

43 upvotes on reddit
Ok-Client-2451 · 6 months ago

I am basing my headcannon on the belief that Mito and Hashirama had multiple kids, leading to a significant age difference between them. Hashirama did have three younger brothers, so it's not out of the realm of possibility that Mito and Hashirama had multiple kids. Having multiple kids born years apart means multiple grandkids born years apart (explaining the 15-year age gap between "cousins" Tsunade and Kushina and thus, the 39-year gap between "aunt and nephew" Tsunade and Kushina.

Hell, in my own family, the difference between my oldest aunt and youngest uncle is about 15 years (my mom is the 2nd of 6 kids). The gap between my oldest and youngest cousins is about 33 years.

Considering Mito and Hashirama grew up during the warring states period and Hashirama died during the relatively early years of the village, I am inclined to presume they had multiple kids, Kushina and Tsunade's parents being among them.

The chart below visualizes my line of thought (ignore Tobirama's side, I had made this for a crack prompt to explain why Tenten can use the sage's weapons, but it still stands IMO)

Before becoming Hokage she implemented Medical Ninja in every team, basically built up the medical corps ground up herself, and is credited with being a primary reason the Leaf won the 2nd war.

After becoming Hokage she reconstructed the village and it’s relationship with the Sand after Orochimarus attack, kept the village alive during Pains attack and reconstructed after, nurtured Naruto to learn Tailed Beast Mode and fight in the 4th war, which definitively won them the war, and saved the 5 Kage while cut in half.

Tels315 · 1 month ago

Konoha was bear destroyed by the Sand/Sound attack. Manybkf their Ninja died, the Hokage was dead etc. She rebuilt the Leaf stronger than it was before. Then the Pain assault destroyed the Leaf again, and she rebuilt it a second time, then lead the Leaf to victory in the 4th Shinobi war. It was her work that paved the way foe Kakashi to have a relatively easy time as Hokage.

The second best Hokage is a toss up between Hiruzen and Tobirama. Tobirama built the Leaf. Sure Hashirama founded it, but it was Tobirama who laid the foundation for Konoha to succeed. Hiruzen made a lot of mistakes, like, a lot alot, but Hiruzen also lead the Leaf through multiple world wars, never losing one of them. He helped the Leaf grow bigger and better than anyone could believe, but he was also extremely overworked and allowed a lot of bad elements to fester too long. Nah fuck it, Tobirama is 2nd, Hiruzen 3rd, neither Hasirama nor Minato were in office long enough to really do anything, so it's hard to rank then, Minato moreso than Hashirama who at least founded the Leaf.

My answer - Tsunade

Before becoming Hokage -

  • Tsunade established the Medical Ninjutsu system.

  • Established the 4 laws of Medical Ninjas.

  • Incorporated one medical ninja in each team of ninjas. ( Which dramatically increased mission success rates)

  • Countered all the poisons of Lady Chiyo during 2nd shinobi war, making Konoha victorious.

  • Popularly hailed as the REASON WHY Leaf won 2nd Shinobi war.

  • Hailed as World's Strongest Kunoichi, Best Medical Ninja and One of the Legendary Sannin.

  • Has finished over 1256 Official Missions of Konoha. ( Which is the 3rd highest record)

After Becoming Hokage -

  • Became Hokage at most turbulent times of Konoha.

  • Remended the tarnished relationship with Sunagakure after Konoha Crush.

  • Sent Sand Shinobi and Leaf shinobi as each other's backup multiple times, which eventually saved Kazekage Gaara's life.

  • Saved Lee from live threatening condition.

  • Saved Choji from the effects of 3 coloured pills.

  • Advocated for Naruto to go out on missions, go with Jiraiya and lead a normal life ( ensuring healthy mental and physical growth).

  • Fought against Konoha Council for Naruto's freedom and support, helping his growth as a shinobi.

  • Kept Danzo's root activities in Check.

  • Was THE ONLY KAGE to send Ninjas actively to hunt down Akatsukis - Hidan , Kakazu, Kisame and Sasori being direct victims of Konoha shinobi.

  • Warned Naruto of the Chakra network damaging effect of Rasenshuriken, hence saving his hands and saving his Jutsus.

  • Kept majority of Konoha alive during the Catastrophic Shinra Tensai, by summoning Katusyu.

  • Palm sized Katusyu summon of Tsunade kept feeding vital information to Naruto about weaknesses and strength of each path of pain which were crucial for his swift victory against them.

  • Trained Sakura to master Strength of a Hundred Healings, which provided her enough chakra to keep the portal open for Sasuke to return from Kaguya's dimension.

  • It was Tsunade's idea to Make Naruto learn and Master Tailed beast mode from Killer B, a decision that Made Allied Shinobi forces win the war.

  • Healed and Protected the 5 Kages even while she was bisected into 2.

And many more...

Naruto, became Hokage because he had a vision and inspired those around him. He formed relationships with and earned the respect of everyone in the 5 nations, not just through strength alone. Sasuke was strong but no one would have wanted him as hokage. A leader unites and leverages the strength(s) of those around them.

Shikamaru is intelligent and im sure makes a great hokage but lacked the reputation and influence Naruto had.

Tldr: Shikamaru didn't have talk no jutsu.

George Washington. Aka Kashi sensei, absolute inspiration to make his sensei's kid a menace, and then he even vacated the Hokage spot to give to Naruto which he always wanted. And simply because he embodies the spirit of jiraiya reading those books. Arguably did more than hashirama during his tenure.

I'd choose the timeline when Danzo took the decision to massacre the Uchiha clan. Unlike Hiruzen, I think I have enough diplomacy and brains to get rid of Danzo. That would prevent the Uchiha massacre. Itachi, our beloved would be saved. Sasuke would be saved from all the gore trauma he faced. Together Sasuke and Naruto could work to fight against Madara and ultimately Kaguya.

Sasuke would have been a problem anyway. Even without the massacre. He's Indra's recornation and they're nothing but trouble. I don't like that everyone's dismantling Danzo. He's certainly not a very good person, but he's a necessary evil, which is what any military structure has. Konoha is exactly that.

Naruto becomes interim Hokage after the Pain invasion and his first task is imprisoning Koharu and Homura.

Posted by Butterscotch_Leading · in r/NarutoFanfiction · 22 days ago

Maybe the elders thought of using Naruto as a puppet Hokage since Tsunade wasn't exactly keen on their bullshit but she is in coma now.

The Daimyo hearing of Naruto's defense of the village against Pain and inspired by Sand having a young Kazekage, suggests Naruto as Hokage. The elders believe they can manipulate him.

But unfortunately for them, Kakashi acts as Naruto's advisor and the very moment Naruto is given the position, Kakashi has Naruto imprison the elders. This way the elders can't gather support for their faction in time and since Naruto's popularity is at an all time high after making sure Nagato revived the village, nobody opposes the decision.

This decision also eventually affects the Kage Summit. Naruto still wants to bring back Sasuke but in Sasuke's eyes, Naruto is Konoha's head.

"Hokage by interim" Naruto is such a good idea I really wish had been brought up sooner. And Naruto gets to build actual experience being Hokage even for a short while, so he can be prepared once he takes the hat full time in the future.

(there's as many ramen cups as Tsunade had booze in the office during his stay)

If he goes to the Kage summit, I imagine Gaara will show unconditional support regarding the situation, and perhaps Naruto can Talk no Jutsu even the old geezers who have beef with one another while he's around (Shizune or Kakashi having to remind Naruto to properly behave before noting the rest of the Kages are hardly any better).

3 upvotes on reddit
Butterscotch_Leading · OP · 22 days ago

It would also give Naruto a more active role in the Shinobi Alliance initially.

Even if Tsunade takes back her position, it is likely Naruto gets informed of the Alliance's plans rather than being cooped up at Turtle island alongside Killer Bee.

3 upvotes on reddit
Ungrateful-Wolf · 22 days ago

And if he does end up meeting Bee as advice from Ay regarding control over his Bijuu, he'd at least be in the know if something required his presence since the rest of the Kages would have more faith in him and he needed to be contacted somehow, proper communication and teamwork would be key.

This would be a very dark fic. Imprisonment would be extreme. That'd be Danzo levels of cruelty. House arrest with guards would be more reasonable and accepted by the public.

14 upvotes on reddit
Butterscotch_Leading · OP · 22 days ago

Just say Naruto knows of their involvement in the Uchiha massacre.

At that point, the very fact they were involved in a genocide/massacre means their age should not be heeded.

Also, placing them in house arrest means their supporters can still rally around them.

Maybe a more tamer option in exile to a remote village. Maybe have a few caretakers for them but they are not involved in any way with politics.

Maybe we can go darker, after going into exile, the elders are not able to handle it since the majority of their life was spent on politics so they kill themselves (this one is inspired by one of my favorite fantasy series Wheel of Time).

22 upvotes on reddit
PastryPyff · 22 days ago

At this point nobody else besides Danzo, the Elders, Sarutobi, Itachi, and Obito know about the truth. And soon Sasuke. There’s no way anyone else would know to tell him.

Naruto doesn’t learn of it until the 5 Kage Summit arc.

13 upvotes on reddit
Bug_Master_405 · 22 days ago

Don't have the imprisonment be immediate.

As Hokage, Naruto would have access to a lot of information he didn't before, some of which was likely to have survived the Pain Attack.

So, Naruto finds evidence of their involvement in the Uchiha Massacre, maybe also finding out they're the ones that leaked his Jinchuriki Status - which made him a pariah since birth - to the public, and decides that they've done enough damage to the village.

So did Naruto early on, Itachi, and every Jinchuriki.

Even Suigetsu talked about returning to the Mist Village once he found all Seven Swords.

Right or wrong it's their village.

I think if he didn’t have Temari and Kankuro he probably would’ve gone Rogue

Gaara was a tortured soul who only wanted to be loved deep down. I think he had love for his siblings deep down. And he worked at it and became both a good friend and family member

Yes, I also love the world building, the economic reasons behind Rasa agreeing to join forces with Orochimaru to attack Konoha.

Probably because he had kankuro and temari, and despite the village doing awful things to him its still his home at the end of the day.

I always wonder where Temari & Kankuro were in those flash backs where he was being ostracized. Where are big bro & big sis to back him up & hug him in his time of need? They just weirdly arent there

If Hiruzen became Hokage again after Minato died, why didn’t Kakashi do the same when Naruto went missing?

Kakashi is always down on himself. He never wanted to be Hokage and he always felt awkward in the role.

Honestly Tsunade is the only right answer for Hokage after Naruto. In reality she should have never stepped down to begin with. She guided the village through its most tragic events and when the village was most vulnerable. She has experience and is the direct student of Hiruzen Sarutobi and granddaughter of Hashirama. She has more wisdom than anyone alive in Konoha. She's what we would consider an "og".  She's infinitely more capable than Shikamaru.

she stepped down because she was spiraling into alcoholism and Naruto had to yell at kakashi to get his shit together and take on the hokage title

Yeah shikamaru is definitely a better strategist which is good for what they are dealing with, just disappointed kakashi is not involved at all. Maybe he retired 😭

How is Shikamaru a better strategist than Kakashi?

Ah yes, shikamaru “the strategist” who 1) failed to bring back sasuke 2) got his sensei packed up 3) couldn’t figure out the mystery behind pain and 4) did nothing in the war arc

The dragonball sub has been talking about aura farming alot recently and this clip made me realize Minato is maybe the best aura farmer in anime cause he's got like

8 minutes? of actual screen time and he milks that shit *dry*

And he farms it effortlessly.

People always talk about Sasuke and Kakashi, but the former farms aura with the intent of a man starving and the latter... Well where did Kakashi learn how to farm so well without try-hard-ing, but from his sensei?

(Not being 100% serious, just a mix of some opinion and lols)

The point about kikashi learning behavior from Monato is accurate. Actually makes so much sense and it's right in your face but I never really thought about it much.

I actually think he's dead one way or another in all of it

It's either a memory (flashback), his ghost inside Naruto, or his resurrected spirit jammed into a fake body

Tobirama. The man created half the jutsu that ruined the world and still had the audacity to act like he was the responsible adult in the room. Iconic.
