TL;DR K-pop idols stay fashionable through a combination of personal style, professional styling, brand sponsorships, and the influence of stylists and management.
Personal Style vs. Professional Styling
K-pop idols often have a blend of personal style and professional styling in their wardrobes. While they may choose their own clothes for casual settings like vlogs or off-stage appearances, stylists are heavily involved in curating outfits for official events such as performances, airport appearances, and red carpets [1:2],
[3:5]. Some idols have distinctive styles that reflect their personalities, such as Yeonjun from TXT, who is known for his androgynous fashion choices
[5:1].
Brand Sponsorships and Ambassadorships
Many idols have brand deals that influence their wardrobe choices. These sponsorships can dictate what they wear during public appearances, including airport fashion, which has become a significant aspect of their image [3:3],
[3:7]. For example, EXO's Kai is famously associated with Gucci, and his style aligns with the brand's aesthetic
[5:2].
Styling Teams and Management Influence
The process of choosing outfits for performances involves art directors, stylists, and sometimes even the idols themselves working together to create cohesive looks that fit the group's concept [2:1],
[2:8]. Companies like Osare Company specialize in designing costumes for idol groups, showcasing the intricate planning that goes into their stage attire
[2:3].
Casual and Off-Duty Fashion
When idols are off-duty, they might dress more casually to blend in, especially when moving around in public spaces without attracting attention [4:1],
[4:6]. Despite this, their casual fashion can still be influenced by their status, with brands sending them free items or stylists suggesting pieces
[1:6].
Distinctive Personal Styles
Some idols have developed distinctive personal styles outside of their performance attire. Key from SHINee is known for his affinity with Commes des Garçons, even naming his pets after the brand [5:4]. Jungkook from BTS has been humorously suggested for a Carhartt diffusion line due to his preference for oversized black t-shirts
[5:5].
In summary, K-pop idols maintain their fashionable image through a combination of personal taste, professional styling, strategic brand partnerships, and the collaborative efforts of stylists and management teams.
Lately I’ve been wondering how much of what idols wear off stage is really their own choice, like in casual vlog outfits, behind-the-scenes clips or during sound checks. Obviously, for official stages, red carpets (and airport fashion at times) it’s the stylists, but when it comes to their “personal” clothes… is it truly 100% their own style?
Take Stray Kids for example, especially Hyunjin and I.N. They often wear super super niche vintage t-shirts, rare streetwear brands, or even old band tees that are really specific and very hard to find. It made me wonder: are they actually going out and sourcing those themselves? Or is it more likely that they’re picking from a shared stylist closet or curated rack they can pick from? and maybe keeping the pieces they really like? (I’m not talking about clothes from partnerships/brand deals)
I noticed at one point I.N wore a shirt that Hyunjin had already worn weeks before in a different setting, so that made me think there could be a pool of clothes that members rotate through, especially those rare vintage finds. And maybe if a member really likes something, they can buy it or get assigned to it…
I don’t mean to say idols don’t have any say, I think they absolutely do buy whatever they want. But maybe they choose to let stylists guide them, because it fits with the image they want to maintain or the group’s overall branding
What do you guys think? Do you believe idols are fully choosing their off-stage fits? Or do you also think there’s a shared stylist inventory + curated image even when it looks casual?
Would love to hear your thoughts or any examples you’ve noticed!
It depends on what they’re doing. For stuff like airport wear, it’s definitely styled tho depending on the idol and the company they might have a hand in it. It’s not a one size fits all answer. Some idols get their personal style taken into account or even occasionally style their official or stage looks while others get no input at all. Also some idols are from companies that don’t have the funds to style them so they wear their own clothes to fan meetings/concerts/stages.
For stuff like Insta/TikTok it’s pretty 50/50 when it’s a dance challenge/promotional/brand/official thing it’s gonna be styled but if it’s just them out and about it probably isn’t. For official content again it depends, dance practices are usually styled, recording and stage behind the scene videos are usually personal style and vlogs are either styled or not depending on the vibe they want. Idols also get gifted tons of clothes as pr, especially if they’re popular idols so the same item can get either shared around or multiples of the same item can get sent to different members.
Also just because two members of the same group are wearing the same items doesn’t necessarily mean they’re being styled (not that it’s a bad thing). They could be sharing clothes, or get matching items etc. To use your skz examples both I.N and hyunjin are notoriously passionate about fashion (I.N especially has an infamously large closet) and are similar heights and builds so it’s not out of the question that they are sharing/swapping or shopping at the same places.
They actually said in a video once that whenever they go through their clothes and find stuff they don't want anymore, they offer it to the other members, and (if I remember correctly), Hyunjin always gets pouty and sad if he doesn't get it so the others usually just let him have everything 😀
If anyone wants to check, that conversation happened in the most recent 1 kids room series, probably Hyunjin's episode!
Honestly that tracks especially the hyunjin part since every skz member is helpless against the hyunjin pout
If you want to see how idols dress personally, check out their airport fashion when they come back from overseas. It usually reflects their own style and such. Like for example Sakura’s departure and arrival fashion are like night and day.
I think the earlier generations of Kpop idols had more freedom in choosing their offstage outfits. The airport pics of groups like SNSD, f(x), and KARA seemed more genuine and based on who they really are and what styles they preferred. Sooyoung and Hyoyeon really wore comfortable clothes, and it seemed reasonable considering that they were traveling.
Lately, I've noticed how polished idols are when it comes to their offstage outfits. Take IVE for example. Their airport photos look like a fashion magazine spread since they all looks so proper and chic as if they had the outfits planned months before. I think agencies are fully aware how most fans care very much about their idols' aesthetics that they now have the stylists plan even the offstage outfits for the sake of feeding the fans content.
So many idols have luxury sponsors now that there aren't many opportunities for airport fashion to be their actual clothes. If any item they're wearing is sponsored, then the whole outfit has been styled for them to match it. That's why I think there's been a generational shift, those sponsors weren't common in the 2nd gen. (edit: Even then I remember Tiffany talking about how idols would often put on a nice outfit for the cameras, but then change into comfortable clothes on the plane.)
The other opportunity we usually had back then to see them casually dressed was dance practice, but those are a whole stage production now with prepared outfits...
Agreeing with the dance practice videos. When I was a broke HS student who just wanted to have stylish clothes, I would go watch dance practice videos because the idols wore clothes that still looked good, yet I can find them in regular thrift stores.
Nowadays, dance practice videos are akin to stage performance videos, the only difference is the location where they perform.
Styling for behind the scenes content where they record songs and learn choreography and the outfits they wear in random lives, probably have a high chance of being personal styling choices.
Airport + any other travel styling (like arriving at music shows) and official dance practice styling seem more curated.
I'm pretty sure they dress themselves outside of schedules but also don't forget they are rich and famous, they'll have brands sending them free stuff, stylists showing them stuff and most likely contacting those brands to get items sent as well as buying their own clothing. One of the few perks of their job.
Basically title. I tried googling but didn't get what i wanted.
I'm just curious how the whole process of "deciding what the idols wear on stage" happens, cuz i was watching my wife watching some concerts and i see like 30 girls on stage all with similar but unique outfits, and then they somehow change into other outfits mid-show. That's an IMMENSE ammount of tailoring work even at the planning stage.
Literally immense. See these videos for how their wardrobes are like:
Most costumes are tailor made but some were ready made like this one: https://x.com/tittyandco_/status/1133386051534376960
Art directors and stylists I'm guessing. I know the brand Osare Company makes a lot of idol costumes (akb, =love etc). They post their work on instagram, it's really amazing to see all the details
Looks like the design/production workflow process is described on their homepage:
Thank you, I love to know about this💕
Kayano Shinobu is AKB48's main stylist and General Manager. Sometimes, outside designers will get contracted to make special one-off outfits too, just like how famous musicians will be contracted to compose songs. For those massive groups performing in arenas there's a whole team making the show happen.
On the other end of the spectrum, in some smaller groups, the members will design and make the stage outfits, write the lyrics, compose the music, do the choreography, book the venues, etc.
I've also seen groups where one of the members would show up having forgotten their outfit and they'd perform in the clothes they showed up in. That's not as bad as a member showing up to the wrong train station though.
The fascinating documentary series Ride on Time on Netflix shows the background preparations made by the talent and staff of Johnnies Entertainment, now called Starto, (including choosing and fitting costumes) as various idol male groups get ready for concert tours. It's probably the same process for the girls as for the boys. Usually one member of the group (the more artistic one) works with the costume designer, choosing fabrics and designs which fit the song block. The costumes match but often differ according to the persona of the member.
Just heard about that guy...🤮
AFAIK there is a lot of darkness in both k-pop and j-pop.
I recommend this! It’s really great to see how not just concerts are planned, but how the day-to-day lives of these idols are.
Stylists and management
Like I’ve always wondered if most the airport fashion of a lot of idols or groups are “real” or actually pre-styled by their company?
Like don’t get me wrong there are idols with the best fashion looks in airport appearances like they could just have a casual look and yet they will always eat it up, sometimes it could even become a huge trend in the fashion world as well!!
But sometimes I feel like most of the outfits of many airport appearances these days feel like their company like chose the clothes like how they chose outfits for their schedules and even prestyled too maybe it’s just me.
So if the outfits are actually prestyled do you also think that the brand deals they have could also be the reason why?
I wanna know thanks
Yeah, they pretty much style it up.
Every once and a while some idols DGAF and will wear something like they just rolled around in a pile of laundry, which I find endearing and funny. G-Dragon I think is one of those who shows up looking like a hot mess which sort of fits his style. He wears mismatched crocs and stuff like that. He is a big fashion guy, so he may be wearing brands, but he looks like a 5 year old dressed him. The girls in Mamadoo are notable for showing up wearing sweatpants and oversized t-shirts and stuff.
I also liked when BTS would dare each other or make bets where they would then have to wear something weird or specific or goofy on their next trip to the airport. I know other groups do that too. I think a classic instance of this was Changsub (BTOB) lost a game or something and showed up to the airport dressed like the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz and wobbled around.
Went and found a pic of this last thing:
I have no doubt that idols have airport fashion planned out by their company because of their brand deals. The average person at the airport isn’t dressed like they’re photo ready so we need to be realistic that idols have to dress to be ready for cameras. This also makes it worse for the situation of too many fans going to airports to catch a glimpse of them.
AFAIR "airport fashion" has become a thing since ca. 2010 exactly because of fashion brand deals.
That's why the out-of-control situations that can occur are to some extent a self-inflicted situation.
We already had suspicions that groups were getting styled/sponsored with specific outfits way back in the 2010s lol
It got really obvious when they were all suddenly dressed in outfits that most would not consider comfortable for actual travel.
As just responded to another post, it apparently started back in the 2010s, both idols/agencies and fashion brands taking advantage of the publicity.
They absolutely are. Especially when they know they are going to get photographed. I think/hope they get changed for the actual flight. I would hate to be stuck in a plane for hours in a full fit lol
Fr like when I go to the airport I just wear a hoodie and some sweatpants that’s it lol😭😭😭😭
They are also flying first class and some will change on the flight.
Same! I always bring a sweatshirt because it can also be used as a pillow. And leggings. Always. Hair in a pony, no makeup, and a giant iced coffee.
I think it really depends on the group. I've seen idols picking out their own clothes for the airport in vlogs before. That said, idols with brand deals will absolutely wear said brands whenever theres a chance of being photographed.
Heyo!! I’ve been into Kpop for about two years now, but something that’s always confused me is how sometimes the groups seem so restricted, but other times they seem so free.
For example, I’ve seen videos of red velvet walking around with like an army of managers and guards blocking them from fans, but then I also see yeri post pictures on her Instagram of her just walking around by herself or spending time at a cafe. I also just saw a video of Irene and Yeri sitting in the stands at a twice concert.
There are other examples with other groups but it seems to be the most obvious with red velvet. So yah! Does anyone know why sometimes they are so protected and other times they aren’t?
Also bonus question, how are they able to go to a twice concert and not get absolutely swamped?? I mean I know people are there mostly for twice but still...
Edit: omg thank you so much for all of the replies!!! Typically I try to reply to each response and carry a bit of a conversation or discussion, but I’m afraid that might get a big long here.
General consensus seems to be
Both seem like really good explanations! Thank you again for all the responses, I read and appreciate all of them!
From what I see, usually they just wear their mask and casual outfit.
Yeah baggy clothes, mask, hoodie... lol sometimes it's quite obvious they try not to be noticed, but you can't tell who they are so it still works? Haha
From what I hear kpop isn’t as popular in Korea as we’d like to think. Like, seeing a kpop idol to most Koreans is probably akin to spotting a YouTuber you don’t even watch or subscribe to. Like, imagine seeing a country singer in the grocery store, but you don’t even listen to country music so you have no idea who they are unless they’re people like Blake Sheldon (who you only recognize because of The Voice). At least that’s what I’m guessing. Unless you’re really big, like IU, no one cares.
tbh the gp doesn’t really care about them and kpop idols are kind of comparable to disney stars, if there were like a hundred disney stars active at once. the over saturation of the idol industry makes an individual idol less interesting by themselves. i’m sure many young people recognize them but just don’t really care about xyz idol that debuted in the 30th group of 2017 unless they’re like bts level. it’s worth noting too, that almost every single celebrity in korea lives in seoul. seoul is a big city but it’s still only 1 city so i’m sure people who live there see celebrities decently often and don’t care anymore unless they’re a fan
I wonder this too. I don't know much about girl groups, but with the boy groups I follow I figured it's probably because they don't wander around in full stage outfits/makeup/hair so they blend in. Like I was watching a Stray Kids vlog where Felix goes to the grocery store and wanders around and like CLEARLY THERE ARE JUST REGULAR PEOPLE THERE and no guards or anything and it's just him and a selfie stick. But he also doesn't look at ALL like he does in videos and photoshoots because he's wearing a mask/hat/no makeup/regular clothes etc. So that probably helps.
I've seen some videos like that with NCT 127 too but like I notice some of them are from when they're in the US so naturally they wouldn't be as instantly recognizable here.
I think it's probably also just predictability and context. If you see people who look like your favorite group going back stage at the concert venue where they're about to put on a concert, the context tells you that's for sure your group. If you see a girl dressed down with normal or no makeup just hanging out at someone else's concert with no one around her, even if you feel like you vaguely recognize her, you're probably thinking like "nah that's just someone who looks similar...she wouldn't just be wandering around like a regular ass person" because the more likely scenario is that it's NOT her and if you went up and said something you'd set yourself and her up for embarrassment.
> Felix goes to the grocery store
Was it near their dorm? If it is, sometimes I wonder if the supermarket staff already recognise them as a regular. I saw iz°one's vlog too where they walked to buy groceries nearby their dorm and they only wore cap/mask/hoodie/padded jacket. Even so, they mention each other's name while talking in the store like it's no big deal lol
They probably dress casually so they aren't as easy to spot and it's districts where a lot of celebrities are, so most of the locals there aren't going batshit because they're pretty used to it at that point. It's sort of like LA and NYC for American stars. I literally walked past a marvel star sitting on a bench eating a sandwich and didn't notice it was him until my friend turned to me and as like "Is that Sebastian Stan" and we turned around to gape and ketp walking cause the dude just wanted to eat lol.
I know that idols constantly change their performance outfits to fit their current concept, but I was wondering if any of them have a distinctive personal style outside of their performances. Specially with the surge in brand embassadors some of the clothes and brands seem the be wearing the idols. As an example, I've seen people say their idols perfectly fit the brand, but that is because they're head to toe dressed in that brand's current collection 24/7. Specially with younger idols who debut and get brand embassador titles, their whole style we know about is that brands current style.
Some examples of some idols and western celebrities that I feel have a distinctive style and thus make sense associating them with certain brands are:
CL and Moschino, as Moschino's more exclusive clothes tend to need you to have a strong image to not be overpowered by the garments. She seemed to actually be interested in the collections of Moschino and they held a long relationship (I don't know currently) + many of their garments fit performance stages.
Western celebrities include Madonna and JPG, even outside of the cone bra both like to shock and do campy things, and Rosie Huntington Whiteley and The Row, since her personal style already includes a lot of The Row, but even outside her makeup and likes for interior design and other brands allign with The Row.
(I'm not including GD since idk so much about Chanel's image in menswear other than Pharrell and Audrey Hepburn since she developed her image w the brand while the brand was young)
Do you know any idols w a distinctive personal style that leans towards a fashion house (maybe even a distinctive era/creative designer who worked at that house (i.e. Galliano at Dior is different from today's Dior)? It can also be a brand that they aren't associated with yet or young brands that are creating their own image
Edit: I just realized maybe also Vernon and maybe a surf brand, since they usually use tie-dye motifs which he loves
EXO’s Kai has been the Gucci boy for years thanks to his sense of style. He even inspired/ helped make a limited edition collection for the brand; other idols like IU own pieces from it.
Key really feels linked to Commes des Garçons apparently, since he named his doggos after the brand 😂
I think Vivienne Westwood really suits him as well.
Alexander McQueen too!
Carhartt please give Jungkook a diffusion line full of genderless giant black t-shirts
yoongi x birkenstock lol no but for real it would feel authentic imo
Yeonjun has an incredible style. Its very androgynous and really cool. He wears a lot of skirts, or really interesting trousers, purses, interesting shirts and jackets. The outfits he styles himself (for his instagram, or pre-show soundchecks, or just for walking around on his daily life) are usually a lot more extra and interesting then the outfits they style him on for promotions and variety shows (although TXT is one of the very few male groups that actually get styled for red carpets and dont wear just black suits with a belt #241).
If i had to assign him a brand, i guess i would go with Valentino. Id rather him not become an ambassador bc then that would mean he would have to stop playing around with fashion and would become constrained to one brand.
Id rather him not become an ambassador bc then that would mean he would have to stop playing around with fashion and would become constrained to one brand.
Same. Fashion is his playground and he knows what works for him AND looks good. Like those fuckin' Rick Owens boots he's worn a few times.
Red Velvet in custom Denicheur dresses for their R to V tour
They do SUCH a good ethereal/royal look and some of these fits are genuinely iconic (the red IU dress!! The Feel My Rhythm stages!!). No notes. Chef’s kiss.
I love IU in the red dress!
Agreed. I mainly wanted to highlight the brand because they are responsible for so many iconic K-pop looks.
(G)I-DLE in custom denicheur pearl tops for their perfomance at Music Bank In Antwerp
These boots are RIDICULOUS. I need them.
Chungha in custom Denicheur for her music video "Bicycle"
This song was so good
Custom Denicheur for Key's G.O.A.T. IN THE KEYLAND concert
Is this the same man as 11? He eats
Yes!
Jin + his Thom Browne whale sweater
Awwww I miss Jinnie in Kore sweater
han from skz has a bunch of stuff that he's been wearing frequently over the years but there is no other single piece of clothing in his wardrobe that he loves as much as that one supreme t-shirt. he's been wearing it for at least 7 years now
Jimins M.A+ shoes. They are literally falling apart after years😭
I lost it when they showed those in AYS with the stepped on backs and everything. Jungkook is kinder than me because I would not stick my fingers in there to pick them up. He was barefoot in those hahaha.
I am super curious what bra brands korean idols favor given that:
AND ALL of the above is what I'm looking for (as I have a small band size that I CANNOT find in the US outside of specific rare brands, and my preferences also align with the points #2 and #3)
Particular bras I have in mind are (and would love to know if you suspect what brands they are from):
Additionally, It's not unheard of for 'well fitting & designed' bras in the US to cost 70-120$, so am very much interested in learning about any luxe korean brands (even if they're out of budget, anything for a wish list splurge or just for inspo)
Neither of those bras you linked look like they're supportive. They're probably alpha-sized.
From my experience, Asian brands (including Korean) all use the +4 method of measuring band size, so I HIGHLY doubt any Kpop idols are actually wearing a correctly and properly fitted bra. That and given most of them are relatively small-chested, you just don't need a ton of support, so there is less importance on wearing your correct size.
From what I have seen, Asian brands usually the smallest band size offered is either 30 or 32... My guess is that most idols would be fitted into a 30 even though they are a 26-28, likely mostly 26. I'm between a 26 and a 28, and while I'm "thin", I'm definitely not Kpop idol level of thin.
(But if you would like to know about luxe lingerie from Asian brands -- check out Wacoal, specifically their Salute line.)
I didn't know Wacoal was an Asian brand, interesting. I really like B. Tempt'd, which is their junior line.
This is my favorite bra, I like the racerback, it keeps the straps from falling, and the cups fit me perfectly with no gapping.
Edited to add that even though the band size starts at 32, I measure at a 28 and the smallest size still fits snugly on me.
Same, I love Wacoal B. Tempt'd I can get in the U.S.. Some models come in very small sizes, the future foundation 30C fits me perfectly and is my everyday bra.
Wacoal offerings between outside Japan and within Japan are completely different though, which is unfortunate since their Japanese stuff is so pretty :(
(Btw not saying this is the case for you, but just a general rule - if the straps are falling, unless you are a very short person and/or have an unusually short torso, it's usually a sign you're wearing the wrong size for bras.)
Wacoal sizing is wacky to me. Their band and cup sizes are somewhat smaller than what I expected. Not to mention that their cup shapes were super weirdly pointy and pointing up. Asian brands also tend to have sportsbra-like models as well, and put on XS, S, M, L, and XL sizing instead of band+cup size.
it's not luxury but verish is probably the best korean bra brand. love them
Wacoal America is different from Wacoal Asia. Wacoal America is definitely more conservative
Idk about brands but the type of bra in the second photo is a balconette bra, might help with searches
I've been sports bra only for a few years now, but back when I did buy regular bras, I had the best luck on ebay with sellers from Guam. They were generic, no-brand bras, but they actually had my size (28DD), and I think it was like a 3 pack for $25, including shipping.
Yes, my idol is a C. U. N. T. chinguyaa 😌
Why did you show me this? Its March 14th im only allowed to simp for Saki today or shes gonna hit me
Better avoid the lobby on your way out
Sorry Chin🪿 I don't listen to Copyright Infringers :(
Oh my oh my (chin)good!
Did Bravo Vince oppa plagiarize Hagrene? Now that I think about it… The 5 letters in Bravo plus the space plus the 🐝🍵🍑 V equals 7. However, after the V, there is an “in”. “in” as in MIN HEEJIN. Min Heejin’s name is 9 letters long. Coincidence? I think not. Therefore, Min Heejin is actually forcing rabbits to deal meth. That’s why the rabbit has a blue background, it’s advertising for 99.1% clear meth. She also ordered Jesse, or better known as JAY WHY PEE, to ruin Fifty Fifty because they had 100% clear meth.
It's true though, chingoose. I tried to cancel my preorder for Hagli's album and Amazon wouldn't do it.
Just a random thought that I had. Recently, Cravity Wonjin was asked on Vlive about the outfits they wore to perform Veni Vidi Vici on music shows. He said that his outfits were originally revealing, with the left and right sides of his shirt exposed, such that parts of his stomach area can be seen.
Wonjin was uncomfortable with that and was like "This is not it" because he thought it's too excessive in revealing his skin (+ he's not the kind to wear revealing clothes). So he told the stylist/staff that he wants his outfit changed and they let him wear an inner tee to cover the revealing parts. In all their Veni Vidi Vici stages, Wonjin's shirt has covered patches around his stomach/waist area so I guess it's his inner tee covering the revealing parts/ or they patched it with cloth.
Good to know that his feedback was heard.
P.s: grammar
I'm really glad that they listened to him! It makes me so sad to think about how there's probably (definitely) many other idols who were uncomfortable with their outfits but weren't able to change.
Yeah, I hope there can be some change in the industry where the companies and stylists can cater to their artists preferences or at least sometimes that they aren't comfortable with. Now that I know there are stylists out there who listens, there's still hope.
Hey thinker! Great post up there. Make sure your post title is clear. One and two word titles are not allowed. Use paragraphs to make it easier to read.

Oh idk why but it gives me anxiety imagining i was him and the stylist said no…like id litterally have a panic attack on stage. But stan cravity!!!!
its so nice to see changes in the industry and to know that artists' preferences and opinions are being heard. too often we hear about artists being forced to do things they arent happy with just because they are bound to contract or under the company's discretion, so im glad to see changes like this!
