TL;DR
Using Tools and Techniques
Several users recommend using tools like tape or eyeliner templates to achieve a precise line. Tape can be used to create a guide for winged eyeliner by aligning it with the lower lash line [1:1]. Templates are available in various shapes and can help achieve consistent results
[5:5]. For those struggling with shaky hands, resting your elbow on a table or using your pinky to steady your hand can improve control
[3:4],
[5:3].
Product Recommendations
Choosing the right product can make a significant difference. Felt tip liners are popular for their ability to create defined lines with minimal pressure [5:1]. Brands like Milani, NYX, and Essence are recommended for beginners due to their ease of use
[1:1]. Brush tip liners, such as the Physician's Formula Eye Booster, offer flexibility and finer lines
[4:4].
Application Techniques
Start by placing dots where you want the wings to end, ensuring they are even on both sides [1:2]. Stretching the eyelid gently while applying can prevent blinking and result in cleaner lines
[2:2]. Pressing the liner onto the eyelid instead of dragging it can minimize wrinkles and skin bunching
[4:1]. Begin at the middle of the eyelid and work outward, starting with a narrow line that can be thickened later
[5:1].
Practice and Patience
Consistent practice is key to mastering eyeliner application. Many users emphasize the importance of regular practice without the pressure of perfection [1:8],
[4:7]. Watching tutorials tailored to your eye shape can provide valuable insights
[2:6],
[4:6]. Additionally, keeping micellar water and q-tips handy can help correct mistakes easily
[3:1].
Additional Considerations
For those with specific challenges like poor eyesight or soft eyelids, adjusting techniques such as using gel eyeliners or softer pencils might be beneficial [4:3],
[4:6]. Experimenting with different types of eyeliners and finding what works best for your unique needs can lead to better results.
To get your wings pointed in the same direction, start by putting a dot where you want the wing to end and check that they're even on both eyes. Then draw a line from the corner of your eye to the dot, and then draw a line along your lash line. Then you draw the top line of your wing extending from the lash line line, and fill in the little triangle that's left.
Use a kohl pencil and trace over an instagram/TikTok filter that has eyeliner. After that go over the trace you made with a liquid pen and neaten it up. Itāll looks so even!
what a good idea ! thank you
The other comments have good advice, so I'll do the boring one: practice practice practice. Everything is easier if you've done it a bunch. And don't be a perfectionist, no one cares if one of your wings is slightly longer
Also, don't let it smell your fear.
Iāve heard this too and it is so true! If you are tentative and nervous your eyeliner will KNOW
Itās like a printer when you have to print something out for something that day
you guys are awesome. I will keep practicing and hope one day i'll be able to look decent with my eyeliner on lol
Your wings are sisters, not twins āØ
Sometimes mine are first cousins and itās all good. š¤£
try to do the eyeliner with your eyes open, especially if you have hooded/deepset eyes - it can help create a shape that preserves even when youāve got your eyes open. idk if iām describing that in a way that makes sense
Pretty sure I found this way to do it on Pinterest forever & a day ago, but I used to use regular ole tape lmao. And for product, I've always used Milani, NYX, or Essence liquid eyeliner with the felt tip.
Take a small piece of tape and make sure it lines up with your lower lash line then angle it how you'd like. Follow the edge of that piece of tape you placed to where you'd like the end of your wing to be, then start about halfway on your upper eyelid and make them meet. Slow & steady! Fill it all in, remove the tape, clean up what you need to, then take a step back and see what can be changed or kept.
I used this method for about a month and now it's just muscle memory - no tape. I can freehand my wings to be any thickness or length. And I've always gotten compliments on my eyeliner and share this tip/info with other women who've asked me how I do it so good or stated "I could never do that" "I don't know how". Takes plenty of practice and patience b/c trust me, there's still days I do my eyeliner and one side has decided to fly while the other has decided to piss off š I just remind myself that they don't have to be twins, they just need to be sisters š¤£š
I try to wear eyeliner every time I do makeup. But the ones I draw are terrible. My friend told me to practice more, but I'd like to know what are the tips to get good eyeliner quickly?
Here's the super-simple tip that changed my eyeliner game!
Take your middle finger and pointer finger. Place them on the outside corner of your eye. Very gently "stretch" your eyelid and then apply the eyeliner. This technique stopped me from blinking while I tried to apply eyeliner. It also helped me apply much cleaner, straighter, and less wobbly lines.

I will try!Thank you for sharing the tips
draw in your shape with black eyeshadow first and play with it to see your desired style then draw it in with actual eyeliner :)
This!
Practicing on my eye is what helped me, I use the maybelline master precise itās a felt tip eyeliner and those are the one kind I can use tbh
Is it waterproof? I don't think it's the eyeliner that's the problem. I've bought multiple eyeliners and none of them really work. Maybe my skills are really bad
It is waterproof and your skills come with time and practice !
Watch tutorials from people with your eye shape. I find liquid liner easier to practice with, so maybe you could try using liquid liner while you figure out what style of eyeliner looks good on you, and then if you dislike liquid liner you can move on to different products.
Thanks! I will try!
It all depends what kind of eyes you have! Different eyes would require really different techniques. Try looking on YouTube for tutorials that have people with similar eyes as you. I personally found that having my eye open and looking straight while drawing it helped me a lot :)
Hey everyone. Tough topic for me since its majorly dysphoria related but can anyone give me idiot friendly tips for eyeliner? I've been literally transitioning for 8 years now and everytime I do my eyeliner it looks like a 10 year old did it.
The line is always much above the lashline so that you can see a gap of skin and it looks just so silly. I've watched numerous tutorials on this but hardly improved. Do you have some advice?
As far as style goes, as you said there's a billion YT videos for that so not much I can add. For actual execution there's a couple of basic things that helps me. This is all super simple stuff a but it took me an upsetting amount of time to get so maybe it'll help you.
Don't close your eye when applying. Some ppl seem to be able to do that, I sure as hell can't.
support the arm with the liner with your other hand. Either on wrist or forearm to steady it and get close to the mirror. I do it standing typically in a bathroom mirror cause looking down into a vanity screws me up.
product matters. A good pen is miles above a bad one. I kinda gave up on pens altogether other than touchups and just use a liquid eyeliner because it's easier to apply in thinner lines without skipping/jumping. Just make sure you're removing excess product before you start. If you use a pencil or product to smudge, do tiny lines. Like you're sketching your eye.
Lastly, if all else fails there's always tightline on the lash line itself and water line.
Dunno if any of this is useful but hope it helps.
I love the Nyx epic pen. It helps if you can stabilize the arm you're applying with. If you're sitting down, rest it on a chair arm or the table. Using your other hand also works, but can add more shaking. Do it A LOT, like a FUCKTON of practice.
Someone else mentioned having elbow support, which is super helpful for getting smooth strokes and an overall good line. If you have a desk or some other surface you can put a mirror on that doesnāt have a sink so itās easier to put something under your elbow, def do so.
I also think most people have an easier time drawing their line with a closed eye, but either way, keeping your eyelid still is important.
A couple qs:
Are you trying to draw your line in one stroke?
Where on your eye are you starting from?
I find having a well-lit mirror really helps, as does practice, practice, and more practice.
Everyone here has some great advice, main thing I want to add is that itās worth keeping some micellar water and q-tips on hand. You can dampen the q-tip with micellar water and use it like an eraser to correct mistakes. Iāve been wearing eyeliner for almost every day for a few years now and still regularly have to do this (my hands arenāt very steady and my eyesight without glasses is bad).
So I know most of the trendy 'hacks' like using tape and stencils and that spoon thing that happened a few years back. But I just really suck.
The main issue I have is that my eyelids are like... soft? Or I have a lot of skin or something. Whenever I try to apply eyeliner, my lid like bunches/wrinkles up and it makes a mess of the whole thing.
Whats probably makes it worse is that I have really terrible eyesight and so without my glasses on, I have to practically have my nose touching the mirror.
It's the one thing that frustrates me the most and puts me off wearing make up all together... but I love it as an art and I want so badly to get better at it.
Maybe I'll just have to continue loving from a distance lol gah its so frustrating.
Any advice would be great. I've mostly attempted with liquil liner, but maybe pencil would be easier and less harsh when I mess up.
I know that this is really frowned upon but i have the same problem with eyeliner, can do my corners fine but the middle just wrinkles and makes a mess!
What I usually do is line my inner corner with my eye open (up until the lashes start and things get squishy) and then close my eye and put one finger on the outer corner and press gently to make it a bit more taut and then line that going inwards, toward the inner corner, and found that minimizes wrinkly bits :D then just open up my eye and line the bit where my finger was in the way. I'm not stretching the skin any more than I would if I was just rubbing my eyes in the morning, possibly even less, so honestly don't think it's going to cause severe premature wrinkles XD I use liquid eyeliner btw, not one with a thin brush tip but the kind thats like a felt tip point that you tip into the liquid
I honestly don't care about premature wrinkles lol, I mean, I'm only human. And my mum is only just now in her mid 50s getting noticable wrinkles so I'm hoping if it bothers me in the future, that genetics are on my side haha
I've tried felt tip/pen liners and they seem to be the worst/most difficult to work with for me. But I only buy the cheapest brands because it's what I can afford atm. So that could be it too. I find liquid eyeliner doesn't 'stick' to my eye. I'll do one layer and it always ends up kind of transparent and see through. So I go over it for a second layer and it almost just pushes around whats already there, even after redipping the pen in the product. It's like it's just black coloured water lol
I don't think I've ever tried gel liner so I am going to do my best to give that a go! And I'm gonna try a pencil again too. I'm trying to be optimistic so I'm not gonna give up until I at least do one damn wing in my lifetime
Hey, I had the same problems as you. Felt tip liners rubbed off easily and didn't adhere to my lids. They also seemed like inky water, not a solid black. And they spread through all my lid wrinkles and lines. Even the beloved Stila liner didn't work on me.
I switched to a brush tip liner. The first one I used was the Physician's Formula Eye Booster 2-in-1 Lash Boosting Eyeliner + Serum in Ultra Black (I heard the regular Black was more watery). It worked a lot better. The brush tip was more flexible, allowing me to make a finer line. The ink didn't bleed as much into my wrinkles. And the color was a proper dark black. The liner I use now is Jesse's Girl which is even cheaper and just as good (PF is about ~$12, JG is ~$7). I highly recommend them, I thought I couldn't make a wing either until I tried them.
As for making the wing shape, TBH I used tape for about 2 years before I could free line it, so it really does take a lot of practice.
This may sound patronizing and I do apologize but did you try giving it a really good hard shake? Had that problem with some of mine, I always shake it before I use it but sometimes it needs a bit of extra oomph XD Gel eyeliner is also a good option, just not had much experience with it as my pot dried out really quickly so can't offer much of and opinion on it, sorry! I'm a liquid girl through and through :p
Some eye shapes just won't work with a wing but it doesn't mean you can't wear makeup. I just get more into my eyeshadows and don't worry about liner and it's super fun and easy!
Best tip is just PRACTICE. I have worn winged eyeliner almost every day for like five years and I still mess up sometimes, lol. I know what you mean about your skin wrinkling up and making it hard to apply eyeliner. Try to get a softer pencil that won't drag as much. A gel or kohl pencil would probably work well. You might also try a felt tip liquid eyeliner pen. Try a few different kinds and see what is easiest for you.
Yes definitely practice!!! After months and months of trying Iām finally getting the hang of liquid liner.
My suggestion is practicing when you get home from work, so thereās no pressure to get it right. Then you can just wash it off anyway.
You may find it easier to use gel eyeliner in a pot, and a fine angled brush? It tends to be easier to build up than liquid eyeliner and the brush should make it easier to draw the wing. If you look up tutorials on YT they will probably be more helpful than people describing them to you! It also may depend on your eyeshape.
I use felt tip liner for a slight winged look everyday and my best tip is to press the eyeliner onto your eyelid vs. trying to drag it across. Iāll usually use the side of the eyeliner and press it along my lashes bit by bit to get a nice thin line across. Then I use the tip to draw the winged end. That way the eye wrinkles/extra skin doesnāt get pulled and mess with the straight line.
Iāve been enjoying some alone time with my alter ego, and Iām slowly learning the basics of makeup with my first (cheap) kit.
My biggest trouble spot? Eyeliner!
I have a cheap but serviceable liquid liner, but I canāt seem to make a steady line on either eye. (Being blind in one eye does not help!) Placing one elbow on the tabletop and a pinky on my cheek steadies my hand, but even the āconnect the dotsā method isnāt working. I need tips for getting as close to the lash line as possible too.
I love how I look, with my first LBD, forms, hose & heels. So thrilling! If I met myself at a bar, Iād buy me more than a few drinks. š
But my eyes are a sore spot. What works best for you?
as liquid liners go, I prefer a brush vs a pen style liner. I place my mirror below me so I am naturally looking down to get as close as I can to my lash line. I would recommend using a brown or charcoal vs straight black because itāll be more forgiving/less harsh in appearance especially while your lines arenāt perfect. There are also stencils you can buy that will help guide your lines. Good luck and have fun!
Iām definitely not an expert but one person I saw on the gram said to basically grip you liner like a pen, then rest the entire pinky side of your hand on your cheek to steady it and just move the loner with your finger. I donāt wear it often and havenāt in a while but I do use a lash enhancing serum that applies just like liner and I use that method to apply it.
For me I find that my fav eyeliner is the "felt liner" from sephora, but liquid eyeliner is almost as good.
The main reason being that they leave a well defined mark with a very light touch, unlike traditional pencils where I find you need to press so hard it hurts your eye before it actually leaves any kind of mark.
So far as applying it, I find that the most reliable method is to start at the middle, then work from one end and slowly work inwards. Start off trying to make a line that's too narrow for what you want, you can always add more later.
My usual application is is to apply in maybe 4 or more parts.
start on the inner 3rd, moving to the middle of my lid.
Let thart dry, then start right at the nose side and connect a line to that centre part.
Then start at the outer end of my eye and work to the centre again.
Unfortunately I can't offer advice on being blind in one eye, but for my hand tremors I find that holding the liner brush in my index and thumb allows me to use my opposing hand to brace against my brow ridge and nose to steady my hand.
Thanks for the tips! I really appreciate the details !
Happy to help.
Eyeliner is hard in general, so ANY tips i'm sure are helpful.
Something I found helped, although unrelated to makeup, was trying pinstriping as a hobby.
For a while I was doing car hot rod style pinstriping, and the muscle memory from that has been really helpful with eyeliner, surprisingly.
You can get very inexpensive eyeliner templates of all shapes and sizes online. You just hold it up to your and apply the eyeliner, pull the template away and voila! Perfect eye makeup!
Thanks! But you can tell from my post that Iāll need to watch my spending for a while. š
Can someone please tell me the secret to making eyeliner STAY on oneās waterline, for at least a few hours? It is sooo frustrating when it looks perfect as Iām leaving the house, then when I go to pee at the restaurant or whatever, I check in the mirror and it has all migrated to under my eye.
I have used multiple pencils so far:
I have also experimented with different application techniques:
None of this seems to make a difference.
Anyone with similar experiences who found a way to make it work? I love the look so much but it always looks like crap so quickly. Keen for product and application suggestions, or just commiserations.
Thank you so much!!!
I use NYX's Epic Ink Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner for my waterline and sometimes for tightlining the upper eye. It doesn't budge at all. 11/10 recommend!
Thank you!
I struggle with this too, I always have to take q-tips out with me to clear my bottom waterline
Have you tried the trick where you just line in between your lashes? I donāt know the correct term, but it can be an alternative to waterline and eye liner
I think this is it
Tightlining
I personally use a gel crayon or pencil liner for that and save the liquid liner for the wing.
Thanks so much Iāll try this!
Made by Mitchell 'All Smudge no Budge' has the best staying power of any I have tried. The downside is that it can be difficult to remove.
Difficult to remove is such a green flag for me! Iāll check it out
Add a primer and then maybe go over it with powder in case the oils from your lids are causing it to run and disappear
Thatās an encouraging endorsement! Price isnāt bad either.
Hello!! I've always wanted to try eyeliner but it's difficult for me because I can barely see out of my other eye and my eyesight is just bad in general, so mahirap magmake up. I decided to try it, I bought the two tip eyeliner from Careline. It's pretty good so far, but nahihirapan ko mag-apply and I'm not sure if I'm doing the eyeliner that fits my eye.
Nagppractice ako, I tried putting concealer first (BYS, not a lot of experience with using concealers in general but I think hindi maganda tong sa BYS), and then I applied eyeliner upward. Tapos from the middle of my pupil, icoconnect ko doon. And then I also add a bit sa lower part + sa waterline using the gel liner. Sobrang messy tignan, and lalo na yung sa right eye (second photo) because I can't see from that eyeš I also tried cleaning up a bit using concealer but I don't think it worked well. Help, what can I do to make it apply more evenly and more pigmented?
Just use a gel liner to tight line.
Katulad sa photo
i start from the middle of my pupil hehe. tysm! will try mascara too sometime
Hi maam! 1st. Then linis na with cotton buds
⢠Kung nagkakamali po, cotton bud with micellar water or concealer brush na manipis pang-linis para crisp yung edges
thank you so much for the detailed response!! i will try it po. if i understood correctly, gel liner pala yung pangguhit and then yung liquid is pang fill in?
following ths post dahil problema ko dn tu, huhu, tas kumakalat sya after a few hours, nagmumukha akong panda
for me no problem nman yung pagkalat, baka sa brand ng eyeliner yun hehe
It really helps to find your eye shape to see which eyeliner style fits you. Something that also helped me in perfecting my eyeliner looks is by using filters with an eyeliner look na gusto ko and replicating it irl just to see if it would work hehe. Also, the slightest change sa pag draw ng thickness and angle ng outer tip ng eyeliner can make a very very big difference kaya I recommend experimenting on it too. And since you mentioned na itās hard to see because of your eyesight, I recommend buying one of these makeup glasses baka lang makahelp hehe
And donāt be afraid to experiment with different types of eyeliners kasi finding the right type of eyeliner na magugustuhan mo can help you create the eyeliner look that youād like, opacity and precision-wise. I started with pencil type gel liners ng focallure kasi it was easier to clean up when I made a mistake and then switched to brush type eyeliners like issy kasi it gave more precision and thiner lines (I have an oily skin type and issy was the only liner that actually stayed on for long hours, no budging and really opaque). I stayed away from felt tip liners kasi I found it hard to use since I usually created thicker lines with it and it doesnāt suit my eye shape and the potted gel liners were a bit too messy for me. But again, what might not work for me might work for you and vice versa so experimenting is important š
Lastly, dear peachieās guide on eyeliners might help as well hehehe! Goodluck op!! hope this helps š„¹
[edit: grammar]
I'm new to using makeup. Here is a comparison between my right and left eyes. I like the way my right eye (the one with the mole) is looking, but I don't think I can replicate it on my left eye because my eyelids are different. I know this looks scruffy up close, but I'm working on it. Does anyone have advice about drawing eyeliner when your eyes have different lid situations to each other? Thank you so much!!
The liner I'm using is Heroine Make Smooth Liquid Eyeliner on my bare face.
Product used: Heroine Make Smooth Liquid Eyeliner
Make a faint outline with brown eyeshadow and then go over it once you like it, helped me a lot when I was learning how to do eyeliner
Oh, I hadn't even thought about using eyeshadow as a guide! I'll give that a try, thank you :)
That would depend on what exactly youād like to fix. For example, if one of your eyes is smaller than the other, you should apply a thinner black eyeliner on the lid and then a nude or white eyeliner at the bottom.
My left eye has a double eyelid, while my right does not and it makes my liner look uneven. The extra bit of skin makes it hard to draw the same lines and confusing to look at
I see. Maybe putting an eyelid tape on your right eyelid will help as a guide.

TikTok ! Thereās a lot of tutorials there
Iāve been wearing eyeliner, specifically on my waterline, for over half my life and feel like I have used every brand under the sun in search of trying to find an eyeliner that does not melt off and get all over my undereyes. I know itās unrealistic to expect makeup to last all day but this was my eyeliner today just over an hour after tightlining and applying on my waterline
My eyes arenāt super watery nor are they super oily. I have tried using pot eyeliners. I have tried setting the eyeliner with a black shadow. I have tried drying my waterline with a q-tip before applying. Nothing works, please help š„² I just want nicely lined eyes!
Iām wearing the Makeup By Mario Master Pigment Pro black eyeliner
Use a concealer and powder under your eye this will stop it spreading downward. Apply a twist up type waterproof eyeliner in your waterline, it should dry and stay there . You can help it stay by adding a small amount of eyeshadow on a flat brush along your lashline before using mascara.
Thank you! I will try that when I do a full face. A lot of times I like to just wear eyeliner with no other makeup except mascara and brows, what do you suggest I try then? Just some loose powder under the eyes first?
I second this! Sometimes it's less about the eyeliner but more about the moisture under your eyes/the oils of your skin/watery eyes. Do your eye makeup first, then apply a concealer underneath with a powder to set - this will help create a āborderā and prevent your liner from travelling. I also love the MUF pencils, they really stay put for me. I'll often follow with Mac carbon eyeshadow.
edit: missing word
edit 2: looking at the photo again, if you bring the concealer & powder up past the outer corner of your eyes, it may help! while it may not seem you have excess moisture or oils, itās natural and relatively unnoticeable for us, but enough to break down makeup. It looks like yours collects there so a āconcealer/powder barrierā may make a good solid difference in how your liner wears!
Inglot AMC eyeliner shade 77 if you like black or there is brown which would look stunning on your eyes. It does NOT budge, youāll need a little eyeliner brush to apply it with.
victoria beckhams eyeliner is AMAZING. easy to smudge right after application but does not move after that! i love it i have it in like 10 colors.
Eyelid primer under your makeup will help stop your eyelids from oiling up and smearing.
Thanks! Do you have a suggestion for a good primer? Itās been years since Iāve used one, I typically just go for concealer on the lids these days
Hard Candy āEyeās The Limitā primer is my go to. One tube lasts forever.
Essence stay and play works well for me and is $5
Hi! This will sound dumb but I grew up rarely wearing makeup - my mom never uses it. I want to wear it more and seem to have some of the basics down, but I'm STRUGGLING with eyeliner. I've tried both pencil and liquid. Please give me any unhinged tips you have š
Just a couple things I think might help, what style or look are you trying to achieve?
Don't worry about making a smooth line in one go, try making dots or short strokes as close as you can to the lash line, then connect them, if you want a softer look you can blends and smudge it as well (more pencil than liquid) I also like to go over the liner with a similar eyeshadow on a small pencil or angle brush, just to soften and refine the lines.
I'd shoot for dark (powder) eye shadow instead of eyeliner, as someone who also went most of her life without eyeliner. It's much, much more forgiving than liquid, pencil, or felt tip. Spritz your eyeliner brush (something like this) with setting spray first, then dip into the palette.
When my sister and I got a color analysis done in Korea, they tried that on me and I like how it looked.
I just got into taupe and bronze eyeliner and realize this is my jam! Way less severe while still giving definition.
Felt tip is easier than either of those, IMO, and even easier is dark eyeshadow on a damp angled brush. Liquid liquid is sooooo messy, I just can't. Pencil really depends on the brand; if you're not using a premium one, you may need to warm up the end with your fingers or even a lighter so it doesn't drag on your skin.
But my main tips regardless are to rest your hand on your cheek to steady it, start as narrow on the lash line as possible, and have makeup wipes and eye drops on hand while you practice.
MAKE SURE TO look straight ahead while applying! not when your eyes are closed or wide open!!
