TL;DR Use waterproof and smudge-proof eyeliners, apply primer and setting spray, and consider tightlining or setting with powder.
Choosing the Right Eyeliner
Selecting an eyeliner with strong staying power is crucial. Users recommend NYX Epic Ink Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner [1:3], Made by Mitchell 'All Smudge no Budge'
[1:2], and Fenty Beauty Flyliner Longwear
[2:3] for their long-lasting effects. The NYX Epic Wear liner, described as "literally like a tattoo," has been praised for its durability on oily lids
[2:1]. Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner also received positive feedback for its endurance
[3:4]
[5:4].
Application Techniques
For better longevity, consider tightlining, which involves applying eyeliner between the lashes rather than directly on the waterline [1:1]
[1:4]. Setting the eyeliner with black eyeshadow can help prevent smudging, with MAC and NYX being recommended brands
[2:7]. Additionally, some users suggest using concealer and translucent powder before applying eyeliner to combat humidity and oiliness
[3:1].
Primers and Setting Sprays
Using a primer before applying eyeliner can significantly improve its staying power. NYX Proof It Primer was noted for enhancing the longevity of eye makeup [3:6]. Setting sprays like Skindinavia were recommended over Urban Decay's updated formula for maintaining eyeliner throughout the day
[2:7]. Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation was mentioned as a surprising alternative that keeps eye makeup intact even in humid conditions
[5:2].
Considerations for Hooded or Oily Eyelids
For those with hooded or oily eyelids, finding the right combination of products is essential. Users have found success with gel liners set with powder or shadow [3:2]. Experimenting with different primers and eyeliners can help find a solution that works best for your specific needs
[3:4].
Additional Recommendations
If you experience frequent smudging, try avoiding eyeliner on the lower lash line altogether, as suggested by one user who found they looked younger and more awake without it [5:4]. Regular touch-ups throughout the day can also help maintain the desired look
[5:1].
Can someone please tell me the secret to making eyeliner STAY on one’s waterline, for at least a few hours? It is sooo frustrating when it looks perfect as I’m leaving the house, then when I go to pee at the restaurant or whatever, I check in the mirror and it has all migrated to under my eye.
I have used multiple pencils so far:
I have also experimented with different application techniques:
None of this seems to make a difference.
Anyone with similar experiences who found a way to make it work? I love the look so much but it always looks like crap so quickly. Keen for product and application suggestions, or just commiserations.
Thank you so much!!!
Made by Mitchell 'All Smudge no Budge' has the best staying power of any I have tried. The downside is that it can be difficult to remove.
Difficult to remove is such a green flag for me! I’ll check it out
I use NYX's Epic Ink Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner for my waterline and sometimes for tightlining the upper eye. It doesn't budge at all. 11/10 recommend!
Thank you!
I struggle with this too, I always have to take q-tips out with me to clear my bottom waterline
Have you tried the trick where you just line in between your lashes? I don’t know the correct term, but it can be an alternative to waterline and eye liner
I think this is it
Tightlining
I personally use a gel crayon or pencil liner for that and save the liquid liner for the wing.
Thanks so much I’ll try this!
Add a primer and then maybe go over it with powder in case the oils from your lids are causing it to run and disappear
That’s an encouraging endorsement! Price isn’t bad either.
i use nyx professional makeup epic ink liner and I usually do a bold look with covering most of my eye but after a few hours from blinking it rubs off how do I prevent this and make it last longer and all day? is there better waterproof smudge proof eyeliner? I don't use eye primer i dont use setting spray or setting powder im open to suggestions on what to do and or buy! thanks
Trixie Cosmetics has some of the best liners for bold looks, I’d recommend the Hotline gel liner.
I recommend the Fenty Beauty Flyliner Longwear. I bought this for my wedding makeup, and ended up not using it because I don’t have the skill and it is UNFORGIVING. It is cemented to your face, I hope you got it symmetrical on the first try.
NYX epic wear liner (with the little inkwell pot) is literally like a tattoo. If you can handle that type of liner, you must try it.
I have heavily hooded, oily lids, and it is the only thing that truly stays put.
It stays put so well, in fact, that the biggest problem is trying to get it off at the end of the day. 😭
(If you can’t handle the inkwell type of liner, then I would go with Maybelline 24h tattoo eyeliner. It was way better than KVD, Stila, and NYX epic ink liners for me.)
what does inkwell pot mean im new to eyeliner what the difference is it hard to work with if if you dont mind i would really appreciate it if you linked the NYX epic wear liner with the little inkwell pot im having trouble finding it
Hey no problem!!
I think this is the NYX Epic Wear liner on Amazon USA. (I’m in Canada so Amazon USA shows up strangely for me)
If you’re new to liner, this type of liner might be tricky.
If you don’t have success with it, I also recommend Maybelline Tattoo Studio liner which is the traditional pen type liner you’re used to.
Pretty cheap: Catrice Eyeliner Calligraph Pro Precise 24h Matt Waterproof 010 Intense Black, 1,2 ml
Not fully proof of everything but it held on during rain for me, it holds on while working as a bartender and being over the hot steaming dishwasher super often. Only cost like 4€ in Germany, definetly worth a try at least!
thanks have you ever tried this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0856FBCS4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1 if so how do they compare
Set with black eyeshadow. MAC is best but the NYX black is a good runner up.
Setting spray to finish entire face. I used to be a fan of Urban Decay all nighter but now it’s skindinavia setting spray. UD changed the formula. Skindinavia is what UD used to be.
i have hooded and oily eyelids and every time i wear winged liner, my eyeliner smudges around my lower lash line and the outer corners of my eyes and also transfers onto my upper lids and it’s so frustrating and embarrassing!
i’m currently using the maybelline gel liner and i really don’t like it: it smudges, it transfers, and it isn’t a very intense black, nor is it creamy or easy to apply. i have tried using and setting my eyelids with the nyx proof it primer before eyeliner application and whilst it helps, i still get panda eyes at the end of the day. i have also tried setting the gel with black eyeshadow and, again, it helps but isn’t fool proof.
is there anything i’m doing wrong? is there a better eyeliner i could use? i’m interested in the dose of colors gel liner - has anyone tried it? honestly, i feel like i have less problems with liquid liner but i find gel much more easy to apply. plus, everyone says gel liner is the most long wearing type of eyeliner out there, is there something i am missing?
I take my angled liner/brow brush and carefully put brown shadow over my liner to set it. My eyes are not hooded, but they tend to water quite a bit.
which eyeliner do you use?
I have 2 I love. Milani infinite and Stilas waterproof.
Do you use primer or concealer prior to eyeliner?
i use the nyx proof it primer. it’s usually really good for my eyeshadow and makes it extremely long lasting.
I use Maybelline and L’Oréal gel liner. So what works for me is concealer then I set it with translucent powder. I live in a humid place and it lasts long for me. And I went through a bad breakup. I may have not been intact but my liner was lmao
I have the Stila stay all day eyeliner and it’s been my favorite so far. I see you already use a primer you like, so keep using that, but when paired with urban decay primer potion my eyeliner stays put for 12 solid hours. I couldn’t be more pleased with the staying power.
This is compared to when I used a karity primer and an elf eyeliner that would smudge on my oily lids after 2 hrs.
i’ve heard so many amazing things about the stila liner! maybe i should just practice liquid liner and give up on gel.
I recently bought the kiko fusion lip pencil in shade 34, and everytime I put on lipgloss it just vanishes.
I’ve tried to put a bit of powder on my lips, and it stays on but when i put on lipgloss, again, it goes away
Honestly, some lip liners just disappear quick. You gotta buy the ones that emphasize lasting power. For example, the Rimmel Lasting Finish and the Maybelline Color Sensational last through eating, drinking and lip gloss applications all day in my experience. Whereas my MAC one just disappears.

Apply gloss first, blot it down, then go in with liner to define and fill. This can help the liner grip better.
tysmmm !! I’ll definitely try it
I'm really struggling with eyeliner. I've tried a few "waterproof" and "smudgeproof" eyeliners but a few hours in and and they've all started smudging or straight up just flaking off. I want something I can put on top and underneath my eyes that will stay there all day without going anywhere (so like a liquid one and a pencil one). I have pretty runny eyes so I need something that is actually waterproof.
I need an eyeliner that could survive the apocalypse basically lol. What are your go-to liners that stay where they're supposed to all day? Also if you have other tips on how to make eyeliner last longer I'd love to hear them.
For liquid, Stila stay all day is my fav, KVD is probably second but I feel that it’s more inconsistent and can dry out too fast. Stila is my go to though.
I really recommend not using any eyeliner or mascara under your eyes, give it a shot, try it for a few weeks and see if you think you look younger and more awake and just brighter.
I used eyeliner in my waterline for decades and only recently realized I legitimately looks so much better without it.
And not needing to use anything on the lower lashes or any lower eyeliner made smudges completely disappear for me!
Thanks!
I hear you, I'm actually the opposite though haha. Spent years not using anything at all underneath my eyes and now I've just recently started doing the bottom as well and I feel like it just enhances my eyes so much. I have slightly downturned, doe-y eyes and I've been kind of embracing that lately. I do more of like a puppy liner now instead of a cat eye because it suits my eye-shape much better but it smudges a lot, so that's why I need a really good liner.
It’s funny, the most smudge proof I can ever make my eyes is when I use Estée Lauder double wear foundation. Even more than any primer or anything, that just makes everything last on my eyes so well. If I use a layer of the foundation and make sure to cover my eyes, and then a primer or even a concealer, and then my eye make up, that is going to last all day even if I go swimming.
I’m in South Florida it’s super humid so I have a lot of issues with eyeliner and mascara running
The only thing that has ever helped me with long-lasting eyeliner was a great primer and setting spray and touch-ups on the water line throughout the day.
Thanks, I'm always on the fence about wether primer and setting spray makes much of a difference but I'll see if I can find some good ones

Hello! I have tried pretty much every drugstore eyeliner for my waterline and none of them last more than an hour before breaking up and disappearing. Even all the “waterproof” and 24 stay ones. Does anyone have a long lasting eyeliner that works on their waterline? Doesn’t have to be drugstore, I’m willing to spend more for one that actually holds up. (I know waterline eyeliner is not everyone’s cup of tea but I love it🥺). Thank you!
My favorite one so far is the Sephora brand sharpen-able one. It actually still looks like it’s on many hours later, and I have super watery eyes. The retractable one isn’t great on the waterline, but I like it for my top lids.
For me, Melt Slick Waterline liners are the undisputed best. They go on smoothly in 1 swipe and last forever.
From the drugstore, I like the Maybelline Tattoo Studio Smokey Gel Pencil - the sharpenable PENCIL, not the retractable version.
I found technique made a huge difference. I got the Charlotte Tilbury pillow talk eye pencil and it would wipe away the colour on the second swipe or sometimes not even deposit colour i the first place BUT then I tried warming it up first and it suddenly worked. It was like a whole different product.
I do get a teeny bit that rubs off right on the outer corner, but for the most part it stays put. Maybe give it a go and see if it helps? Saves you having to spend more if it works and if it doesn't, at least you know for sure it's the product that's the issue.
I've also heard good things about the Victoria Beckham satin kajals and they seem promising from when I've swatched them in store, so I'm going to try one of them next.
not drugstore but i had pretty good luck with urban decay pencil
I mega dry my waterline with a QTIP and immediately go in with a warmed up eyeliner (run it a few times on the back of your hand) and I TRY to get it dark enough in as little passes as possible. Again. Immediately after the QTIP. This has helped me so much. I use the wet and wild breakup proof one and it’s probably not that great but this tip helps so much. Also no clue why not doing a ton of swatches in your waterline helps. Heard once and I think it helped
Edit: CAREFULLY set with black eyeshadow. Make sure it’s tapped off before putting it on. This seals my eyes all night.
Hi! Recently starting wearing eyeliner on my water line again and I've noticed about half way through the day it's already almost completely off. I use a L'Oréal twist liner, not sure if I should invest in a better product or if there's any trick to make it last throughout the work day/night out. Thanks!
Kiss me heroine

VERY new to makeup. I tried putting on some eyeliner today. I did a little wing on top and lined the bottom eyelid. I’m pretty sure I didn’t touch my eyes (very aware of touching my face since COVID, even more so today since I was wearing eye makeup), but when I went to lunch I noticed my eyeliner was quite messed up. The wings were smudged and the bottom eyelids all but gone? The only thing I could think of was that maybe the wings smudged when I smiled and the sides of my eyes crinkled? And the moisture from my eyes washed away the bottom eyelids? Does that even sound plausible? Is there a way to prevent this? I was talking to my friends at the end of the day and their eyeliner was still very sharp, like they just applied it. Sorry if these are dumb questions. I know literally nothing about anything. :(
It sounds like you may have oily lids. You might benefit from trying a different brand or waterproof style
I definitely have a very oily T zone, so this could be the case. I’ll try looking into different brands/waterproof products. Thank you!
As someone with very oily eyelids I find that liquid eyeliner stays a million times better than other forms of eyeliner
Eye makeup primer! I like the fenty by rihanna one from Sephora.
Oh, I didn’t even know that was a thing. Lol I’ll look it up. Thank you!
Eyeshadow primer first and setting powder after!
I didn’t even know such products existed. I’ll definitely look them up. Thank you!
Here a tip that is a bit out there. Use lash glue first, wait for it to dry and than use your eyeliner on top. I use it for events/partying when I know i will sweat a Lot.
Sounds like an advanced technique. Lol I’ll keep it in mind. Thank you!
So when my eyeliner goes on it looks great and I use an eyeshadow primer, a waterproof gel eyeliner, and black eyeshadow over top of it and I put powder around it too. However it gets patchy and sticks to some areas within a few hours. It’s typically my outer corners that rub off first and it goes from there but my inner corners stay all day so I have no clue what to do, it’s not a huge problem but it’s just something I’d like to fix or make better if I can.
not really a tip but i recommend the nyx epic wear eyeliner, it’s lasted me through multiple sobbing sessions and never smudged!
I found the gel liners used to last wayyy longer on my water line. If you want pencil form, I use the Clinique eyeliner and it’s a little expensive but lasts a good while.
I use the Clinique one too! I didn’t think about using liquid liner over it! Thanks!
I meant on the top lid I do liquid eyeliner then I just do pencil on waterline :) try gel though on the water line with a little brush if you can’t get the pencil to stay though
On the top I do a thin line of maybelline liquid eyeliner always though, in addition to pencil on water line
Try wiping the the waterline dry with a q-tip before applying:) creates a strong base to hold.
I try my best to do that except water comes back like immediately
I haven't worn waterline eye-liner in a long time but when I did, I used to set it with powder. Slightly uncomfortable at first but it works fairly well
This is an impossible task. I wish any eyeliner would stay on longer on the water line.
Does anyone know of a black eyeliner pencil that’s waterproof and lasts a long time? I may be asking for too much 😭 I’m happy to spend on luxury as well as long as it lasts
I’m using the 24/7 black pencil by urban decay currently, I like doing my eyeliner with a little brush and pencil over liquid. I love how dark it is but oh my god after work it’s smudged and my under eyes get super dark 😭
I’d also use eyeshadow but I don’t own any and I’m not familiar at all. so if anyone knows some that can last a long time PLS SHARE 😭😭
The best ones I’ve tried are either the Benefit Badgal Bang 24 hour waterproof eyeliner, or the Live Tinted Hueliner Longwearing Kajal pencil liner!! Both are super black and creamy but once they dry down they don’t budge. I don’t know why people always recommend the Urban Decay one lol it smudges so bad
Anastasia matte liquid liner is the most pigmented black liner I've seen that Ulta carries. I often show guests that liner and they always buy it. I try it on my hand to show them and as the day progresses, I wash my hands and that liner doesn't budge.
Mabeline tattoo gel one
Milani ! I have used a lot of brands & it works well for me. I use it only for tight lining.
