TL;DR
Techniques for Different Eye Shapes
Creating the perfect winged eyeliner can be challenging, especially for those with hooded eyes. One effective tip is to apply eyeliner while looking straight ahead, which helps in accommodating any folds or creases [1:1],
[3:1]. For hooded eyes, it’s often recommended to start the wing first and then draw the rest of the liner
[3:2]. Katie Jane Hughes, a makeup artist known for her work on hooded eyes, suggests drawing the shape with your eyes open to suit your eye shape better
[4:3].
Tools and Products
Using tools like tape can help achieve a sharp, clean line [1:5],
[2:3]. Eyeliner stamps are another popular tool that can simplify the process and ensure even wings every time
[3:5],
[4:2]. For those who prefer more traditional methods, using an angled brush with eyeshadow can help outline the wing before filling it in with liquid liner
[2:1].
Practice and Patience
The consensus among many users is that practice makes perfect. Regular practice can significantly reduce the time it takes to create a winged look [2:6],
[2:7]. Practicing at night when there’s no pressure to get it right immediately can be beneficial
[4:4].
Stability and Application Tips
Stabilizing your elbow on a flat surface can provide more control when applying eyeliner [5:1]. Mapping out the shape with your eye open and then filling in the gaps once you have the desired shape is another effective technique
[2:4].
Product Recommendations
Several products were mentioned as favorites, such as the NYX Epic Liner [3:1] and Maybelline's liner express
[2:3]. The NYX Gel Liner was also highlighted for its effectiveness when paired with certain eyeshadow palettes
[5].
By considering these tips and techniques, you can refine your winged eyeliner skills and find what works best for your unique eye shape and personal style.
Katie Jane Hughes is a makeup artist that does a lot of hooded eye liner. I follow her on Instagram and find her technique and demos really helpful!
Keep your eyes open and looking straight ahead and draw a small line showing where you want the liner to end up when you're done. Sometimes, that means drawing over creases and folds and wrinkles. Start small. You can always go bigger, but you can't go smaller once you've drawn big ones. Watch a few YouTube videos for winged liner on hooded eyes. I don't draw mine all the way across my eyelids. I taper it off around halfway on so it doesn't take up lid space. Make the outside edge very thin, not quite so thick. But most of all, keep practicing! Do it before bed when you're not going anywhere and it doesn't matter if you mess up. Then you can wipe it off and try again the next day.
I did mine last night using this technique and I recommend it. Best so far. Keep at it! The struggle is real!

You can use tape to make it pointier, you can use a angled brush with concealer on and sharpen the flick or you can take a cotton bud and make up remover to clean it up and make it sharp
your makeup looks gorgeous! side note, where did you get that dress/top??
Thank you! It's a dress that I got a Ross a few years ago. I saw it and thought it was perfect for NYE and this was the first year I actually wore it for the NYE party even though our party was entirely virtual. I wanted to feel pretty to make it feel at least a little bit more normal. My boyfriend was in a full almost costume like outfit with a top hat that he wore to a wedding in fall of 2019 that had the theme "Circus Fancy." So we were all dolled up together. I hope you had an enjoyable New Year's as well however you chose to celebrate. I just really wanted to do my make-up since I don't really have any reason to actually put it on anymore and it is something I enjoy.
I wanna start doing a little basic, every day makeup and I looove some winged eyeliner but it takes me like over an hour to get them just decent, I never really practiced them much before, can anyone give me their best tips and tricks to help me become a liner queen ❤️ tia
Look in the mirror straight ahead of you when doing the wings, if you’re looking at any angle or half closing your eyes or anything you’ll always end up with wonky wings and weird shapes. This is especially important if you have hooded or uneven eyes!
Thank you! Il try that ❤️ I’m bad for closing the eye I’m working on
Just map out the shape with your eye open then you can fill in the gaps with your eye closed once you’ve got the shape right!
When I started I literally used tape to get a clean wing (be careful with the angle LOL, I messed up a lot)
Now i follow my eye shape and do a straighter wing instead of a very high one. I'm Asian so I find it to be more flattering for my eye shape.
I personally use Maybelline's liner express but it's not the thinnest tip.
it's literally just practice, when i wore eyeliner every day it took me about 30 seconds now that I don't it takes longer
Practice. Took me 15 years lmao.
Eyeshadow for the outline/angle if the wing.
Eyeshadow is the easiest to wipe away and fix using a clean brush/cotton tip with some moisturizer (cleans and preps all in one).
once you have the trajectory of the wing even you can now connect it to the lashline. Again an angled brush is very handy as you don’t actually have to draw on the skin, you can just stamp the line on.
an uneven line can easily be fixed with a sharp edged brush dipped into a bit of moisturizer.
once you have a shape that you‘re happy with you can go over it with liquid liner or gel liner or just wet eyeshadow for a crisper line.
Edit for additional advice: tenacity and patience are key ingredients when doing liner. I used to practice just before hopping in the shower so it doesn’t matter if I fuck up.
Thank you so much ❤️❤️
You‘re very welcome
Searched far and wide on YT and made this clypsy to share.
Winged Eyeliner Compilation Clypsy
If you aren't happy with your winged eyeliner technique yet, hopefully one of these will help you achieve your best ever.
If I missed your goto tutorial on YT, let me know and I can update this compilation or you can easily make your own.
Life changing tip I got a few days ago; if you have hooded eyes, apply the wing while looking forward. The strokes will overlap the fold of skin and give you a happy, straight wing instead of a sad, partially hidden one. edit- I've been using nyx epic liner and I absolutely love it
My biggest life-changing tip for hooded eyes, is to start the wing first and then draw the rest of the eyeliner (i always thought it was the other way around and ended up with the most uneven wings in the world)
This girl needs some better eyeliner. All the skipping makes it a lot harder to get a good wing
My eye lid skin is so loose that I always get skipping. I have to go back and fill it in. It's extremely annoying, but unless I stretch my skin I can't avoid it. And even then the shape needs to be tweaked because it changes from the stretched shape.
For quick looks I just use matte black shadow smudged on the lash line. So much easier for me.
Yep, I'm nearing 40 and eyeliner is a huge pain. Some are definitely easier to work with than others, but they all skip. I usually line with a dark shadow too, honestly prefer the way it looks most of the time anyway. Still, always wanting to perfect the skill, lol.
I like the eyeliner stamp, i ordered it off wish. Perfect, even wings every time.
Same. Realized I needed some assistance. I still can't get them to look the same on each side, lmfao
No worries. Just finish one eye and look the other way. heheheheee
My one tip for getting good eyeliner... is not to be scared because it does sense fear
1 pc charming cat eye seal stamp eyeliner... wish names are just all the tags they can think of so it might be hard to find but different stores will sell the same ones. I got the "thin" one, it gives a nice modest flick and the other end is a felt tip eyeliner!! Did not bother my eyes either.
I rock it back and forth to get more ink off of it. Sometimes the whole wing doesnt come out, but the outline is still there, so you can fill it in w the pen. I noticed storing it facing down usually prevents this. Very happy w the stamp! Heres a pic the first time i used it http://imgur.com/gallery/RBts5DE
I just use scotch tape. It's idiot proof.
I am mad about makeup and have been seriously adding to my collection for around 2yrs but I have NEVER mastered any form of winged eyeliner. I have tried the sticker things, special tools and just can never do it! Could it be my eye shape or am I just doing it wrong?!? Help please!
I use winged eyeliner stamps because I couldn’t get it either. I literally swear by the stamps. They’re so easy to use and I got them off amazon
Practice!! Also, I have one hooded eye which messes up my wings so I learned this new technique from Katie Jane Hughes for winged eyeliner!! You can find a detailed video on her Instagram, but basically she suggests drawing the shape with your eyes open so that it suits the shape of your eye perfectly. It’s really helped my wings. Another thing is finding the right sort of eyeliner for you—it’s different for everyone. I hate the pen brush sorts—can barely draw a straight line with them. I can only use the very liquid kind that comes in a pot with a brush. So experiment!!
Honestly just practice every night before bed so that you can get the hang of it and don't have the pressure of needing it to be perfect because you have somewhere to be. Then you can just wash it off after!
Do you have hooded eyes? It took me years to figure out that's why my wings were straight with my eyes closed and mysteriously distorted when I opened them.
Depending on where your crease falls you may be able to just avoid it when drawing your wing, staying under it. If it's too low for that, the trick is to draw across it really carefully in small strokes and keep opening your eye to look straight at the mirror so you can see what it looks like with your eyes open.
Here are a couple tutorials that might help! The second one isn't specifically for hooded eyes, but her technique avoids the crease and it helps me.
Good luck! You'll get it to work eventually :)
Don’t be afraid to try different angles it took me a while to find the right angled wing. Try one pointed to the tail of the brow and one straight towards the temple etc
Thanks for the advice!
I have never been able to do winged eyeliner well despite trying countless tips and tricks, but yesterday tried something that worked and I thought I'd share in case it can work for others. I literally just did the eyeliner before I put eyeshadow on (redid it a bunch of times until it looked good), then traced the initial coat after applying eyeshadow instead of guesstimating where to draw the wing as I usually do. Might only work with certain products, but was thrilled with the results I got using NYX Gel Liner in Black with the Carli Bybel ABH palette.
I’m ok with the liner, it’s putting on lashes I can’t do no matter what I try!
haha same, gave up on that years ago!
Kelly Strack just did a video where she tried magnetic lashes with a magnetic eye liner. I'm actually super thinking about trying them. It looked so easy...
I wish I could wear them, they look so glamorous.
another good trick I always use is to stabilize your elbow of the hand you're doing the winged eyeliner with on a flat surface!
thank you! great tip!
I've completely given up trying! I'm super happy for you, though. It is truly a skill.
Robert Welsh has great tips
I love him and his brother! Will look into this. Thanks :)
If there were skill badges for things learned while in quarantine, learning to do wings would certainly be one of them!
I have really hooded eyes, so I'm trying to branch out into different looks, but wings are quite challenging!
Wings are an art to themselves, but yours look great! Check out some tutorials on wings for hooded eyes, that may give you a little guidance.
Thank you! I've definitely been studying some tips and tutorials, but there's always a learning curve to putting it into practice.
You're welcome! Time and practice make everything easier. My favorite guru Alexandra Anele has a few vids for hooded eyes that may be helpful. Thank you for being part of our reddit 😁
YES! nailed it!
Thank you!
I’m new to makeup, and while I (somewhat ) know what I’m doing, I can’t seem to get the hang of winged eyeliner no matter how hard I try. I’ve been trying to get it down for months now and it always turns out a mess!
I have hooded eyes so most of the time you can barely even see when I have eyeshadow or liner on. Any tips? Also, if anyone could recommend the best eyeliner to do it with I would appreciate it!
Bot removed my comment for containing youtube link, so here we go again lol. Look up Crystal Lindy's tutorial for winged liner on hooded eyes, it's awesome! Simple but works very well.
Rosa Does Makeup has a YouTube video called “Must See Eyeliner Tutorial for Hooded, Droopy eyes”. She has a different technique to any of the others I’ve seen. Personally I’ve found that doing my eyeshadow then using Maybelline’s Eraser Eye Concealer in either brightening or highlighter ( I can’t tell which, the writing has rubbed off!) to draw a line at an angle I want my shadow to go inand blend it out underneath. It creates a nice contrast without using a liner, or it helps create a defined line to follow.
Alissa Ashley has some tutorials on makeup for hooded eyes, including at least two(?) on just eyeliner. Def recommend her YouTube channel!
Every makeup tutorial ever will tell you define your crease and put shimmer on your lid. Fuck that. Place that shit higher up to fake more eyelid space. Put a blinding inner corner highlight and don’t be afraid to drag it up and down to really make your eye bigger.
Yes! First, as someone else mentioned, keep your eyes open. Not just that, but make sure you’re looking straight ahead in a neutral gaze (as in, not tilting your head up or down, not raising eyebrows). This is the position I make my initial line in. I also don’t follow that “angle up to the end of your eyebrow” piece of advice. This gets tricky with hooded eyes. I draw somewhere between flat out vertical and the eyebrow angle.
Two other things: I don’t do that cut out shape because my hood isn’t that prominent and because I was blessed with big lashes that I always play up so it’s not super noticeable. Also, if you’re nervous about that initial line, you can always keep that same gaze in the mirror and instead mark out your angle with a piece of scotch tape—I would do this all the time when I was starting out.
Hope this helps!
I really love the look of a simple winged liner. I am still fairly new at makeup and I have a question. I can get my line and wing to look good when my eye is mostly closed (pic 1), but when I open my eye or look forward it distorts and does not seem to align with the curve of my eyelid (pic 2 & 3). Any suggestions or tips? It's kinda a bad photo, it's more noticeable irl
Look up hooded eyeliner videos on YouTube they have specific methods for getting a good winged eye without it disappearing whenever you open your eyes
Hello dear, when your eyelid is drooping you have to do it with your eye open and looking in front of the eyeliner, mark the line, and then if with the eyelid closed fill in the gaps
Practice it until you have something like this left🖤
I forgot to add, the main idea when the eyelid droops is not to draw on the eyelid because with the eye at rest the eyeliner is hidden, so you have to draw like the example more on the outside, that's why I tell you that you can mark it and then fill it in.
Also just keep practicing because it looks like you were sacred to add too much liner and mess it up 😭😭 get a nice gel liner that glides no liquid or pencils
I have tried a gel pencil, but it makes thick uneven lines
No a gel liner that you use a brush that has a separate brush.
look up risa does makeup on youtube she can help! also tight lining the top eye lid makes a big difference.
Tight lining the waterline, not the eyelid to leave space. And if you want a wing try doing a more horizontal line just enough to avoid the crease.
I’m used to doing wings but I begin them mid lid. I’m obsessed with this double-sided wing look but I can already seeing myself f*cking it up.
I think this look is going to take a steady hand and practice. I love that look, but I always have trouble with my eyes watering and ruining eye liner. I love a winged liner and I want it to be the darkest shade of black possible!
E.L.F makes a great eyeline that is like a maker. You can use it to make really crisp lines.
I’m probably not being helpful bc I don’t know of a tutorial, but I used to always practice eyeliner and eyebrows before getting in the shower everyday bc I could just wash away any failed attempt. That was how I nailed winged eyeliner and brows in general.
Sometimes mapping it out with a powder then liquid on top can help but also this will take practice to get used to so just practice even it it’s doing it right before you take off your makeup the more you practice the more easier it will be
Arent these "siren eyes "
YES thank you! I was looking for the name
A good solid black gel liner, a sharp angled brush, and a steady hand will be your best friend for this project.
Also, be sure you’re lining your eyes the way that best fits your shape. I have hooded eyes and dragging eyeliner across my lash line just doesn’t work for me.
Have fun!
Honestly not bad. You can see which eye was more comfortable for you.
I find resting my palm under my cheek bone helps to stabilize my hand when doing the "less comfortable eye". I also measure out and put a dot approximately equal distance apart that way it's more connect the dots than trying to mirror the same wing blindly. (Also, a lot easier to correct a small dot than a whole wing)
Thank you!! It’s definitely not easy!
Practice is the key! Mistakes are the only way we get better.
Looks great!
I think you did a great job! 👏🏼
Cute
You did great hun! It gets easier with practice.
The game changer for me was switching from the pen style liner to the wand style. I use this one by elf and it got much easier
