TL;DR To activate T-Mobile's international plan, ensure your phone has data roaming enabled and consider purchasing an international data pass for enhanced service. Contact T-Mobile support if you encounter issues.
Activating International Service
For most T-Mobile plans like Magenta Max, international service is automatically included. Before traveling, make sure that data roaming is turned on in your mobile settings. Upon arrival in a new country, you should receive a welcome text confirming that your international service is active [2:1]
[2:2]. If you want additional high-speed data or plan to make frequent calls, consider purchasing an international voice and data pass, which offers more benefits than the standard plan
[2:5].
Purchasing and Using Data Passes
If you need more than the basic international coverage, you can buy an international data pass through the T-Mobile app. These passes are typically activated immediately upon purchase, allowing you to use higher-speed data right away [4:2]. The cost of these passes varies, with options like a $50 pass available for extended data needs
[4:5].
Contacting T-Mobile Abroad
If you face difficulties accessing your T-Mobile account internationally, such as being unable to access the website or app, try using a VPN with a US connection [1:1]. For direct assistance, you can contact T-Mobile’s international support at +1 (505) 998-3793 or reach out via social media platforms like Twitter or Facebook to connect with T-Force, T-Mobile's customer support team
[5:1].
Unlocking Your Phone for International Use
If you plan to use a local SIM card while abroad, you may need to unlock your phone. T-Mobile is generally accommodating when it comes to unlocking phones for international travel. You can request an unlock by contacting T-Mobile support and providing your travel dates [3:1]. Note that iPhones typically receive a full unlock rather than a temporary one
[3:5].
Additional Tips
Be cautious of potential data charges when using international services, and consider turning off auto-updates to conserve data [2:6]. Using third-party apps for calls over data can help reduce costs, as traditional calls incur a charge of 25 cents per minute
[2:7].
This is specific but maybe somebody here can help me out.
I'm an American in Hong Kong. I have a tmobile prepaid phone which does not include international calling. I use an international sim card when I'm here, but google is requiring 2fa to get into my email which only texts my U.S. tmobile number.
To remedy this, I want to upgrade my tmobile account to a regular plan and turn on international calling. But I cannot access the t-mobile website here (access denied error on website), the t-mobile app (just times out if i try to open), and am having trouble calling customer service with my international sim card.
I've tried accessing the website on multiple browsers and multiple ip addresses. Does anybody here have a remedy on how to get into my account to change it? I know it's a long shot but appreciate any help.
Hello everyone! I'm currently on the magenta max plan with T-Mobile. As I understand it, this plan includes international service. In a few weeks, I'm traveling to Europe (From the US). Is there anything extra I need to do to activate the international service, or should it just work? Thanks!
It should just work, provided you have not done something to disable it.

Get an international voice and data pass if you plan on making or receiving calls and want more high speed data. 10 day pass is $35 or a 30 day pass is $50. If not, be prepared to pay .25¢ a minute in most countries (can be more)
Does the international voice and data pass work in multiple countries (within the 10 or 30 days)?
Yes. I activated it and was in 3 different countries and each time I simply got a text saying welcome to x country and that I'm still good on my 30 Day pass.
Just to be clear - that's to/from any country - calling the US? 25 cents. Calling the country you're in? 25 cents.
I usually rely on Google voice when traveling - free calls over data to US and favorable international rates as well. The $50 plan is worth it as well for the convenience, but I have run into issues where the plan didn't activate for some reason despite being charged.
Yep, incoming or outgoing calls get charged 25¢ a min. Using third party apps that use data to make calls is a good idea. I usually go to the store and ask them to add it for me, and it has worked.
It will just work, be wary of data charges, turn auto updates off.
You'll get nagged after 5 days or so about out of country service.
It's also very easy to pick up cheap sims in most countries, but that will give you a different phone number with local prefix
be wary of data charges,
Where in Europe exactly do you get data charges?
International service while son was in France & Spain, on One plan, which is supposedly included, we're still arguing with billing to have it corrected. No not confusing it with calling, he made none.
Trying to resolve it asap, since swmbo & I are heading there & Amsterdam next month.
Orange Travel eSim
Make sure you have data roaming turn on is all an you’ll receive a welcome txt from tmobile stating your good to go !
Back story first - I had Sprint post paid service and if I had a phone on payments they would unlock it for me for my international travel dates to use a sim overseas then lock it again on my return date. Before I switched my sim and got a new phone thru Tmobile I asked about this and they stated it would be the same process and to not worry.
Well I am traveling in February so I wanted to give tmobile the dates to unlock and relock my phone so I can use a local sim overseas for those around me in the other country to call or text me. They said it was not an option until my phone was paid off in full ($500 left on it). My bill doesn't reflect a phone payment as I get a credit for it every month. I was upset as I have 6 phones on my plan and have been a sprint (now tmobile) customer since 2003 and have always paid on time. After talking with the rep on the phone for about an hour her supervisor finally offered for me to pay the $500 I owe to pay off the phone and they would unlock my phone and then credit my account back the $500. Her higher ups came to this solution so that I could use a foreign sim in my phone. I hope this helps someone else.
Both my iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini were unlocked by just asking. The reps did warn me I could be denied due to not meeting the requirements, but I’ve never had an issue nor had to pay anything.
Bteague - Did both of your devices still have money owed on them like mine had? I was charged something like $20/mo but I was given a $20/mo credit for a trade in and opening a new account so it was a wash as far as cost but on their books it wasn't fully paid for yet.
Yup both had money owed. When I had my 12 mini unlocked, the rep mentioned being on the military plan and assumed I would be using it for travel. I didn’t correct them. With my 13 mini, I just asked politely. The rep informed me while I didn’t meet the criteria for unlocking, they would still submit the request. 48 hours later, iphone said “no sim restrictions”. One reason I won’t leave T-Mobile. I use the dual sim feature on my iPhone and my second line is with AT&T so that’s why I like to get them unlocked.
Message t-force on twitter and ask for a temp unlock. Give them the dates of travel etc. Also depending on where you are going, and how long you will be there, consider paying for a international data plan. It's usually easier than a local sim and you dont have to worry about BS of swapping sims.
Thank you, great idea. I have tried the travel data plan but I find it better to use their sim in my card as it's very cheap and better usually. Also I can make/get messages and calls to/from locals.
Thank you!
Could you explain what you mean? You find a physical sim better than an esim while traveling? Is the physical sim also t mobile or a local company?
For iPhones, there is no such thing as a "temporary unlock".
It does exist on Android phones, and you can do that yourself in the network unlock section (or app) - exact location varies by device. It lasts for 30 days and then the device automatically is relocked
Correct. The “international travel” unlock for iPhone is just a full unlock. 👌
Seem like you got bad service. Should not have to appreciate paying $500 and getting bill credit for $500. They should have done on the spot
Hang up and try again. T-Mobile is really good about unlocking as long as you mention it's for international travel.
Hypothetical. So, I'm in Portugal on Magenta Max. I need to active an International data pass. How long does it take to activate and enjoy the benefits after purchasing it in the T-Mobile app? I've used International passes on other carriers before but never needed to on T-Mo before because the 256k has always been enough, but this time I've gonna have to step it up for more than just the usual maps and iMessage and light web browsing.
For me it was immediate. I bought the data pass and by the time I could open the speed test app it was already active.
Thank you
How much was the pass
Haven’t bought yet. Leaving Thursday. Looking at the $50 pass. Might also do the 10GB for 30 Day Europe Ubigi as well as the 30 GB for 15 days MEO in Portugal because I have some heavy Zoom/Team meetings scheduled while I’m there.
I’m contemplating between getting a local sim vs roaming when I’m in Europe in Sept
Yup, I can turn on T-Mo and Ubigi at the same time, and did yesterday while setting up Ubigi account. Of course, only one data session at a time though, but both eSIMs active
Hi all,
I'm abroad right now and will be for the foreseeable future. I paid off my phone and asked for my account to be temporarily suspended for 90 days, just in case I need to return if there's an emergency or if things don't pan out here.
I was told on the phone that there wouldn't be a charge for my suspended service because it was volvoluntary, but apparently t mobile is charging me a little over 60 dollars a month and is threatening to send my debt to collections. I only became aware of this because they sent a letter to an old home address and some family checked it for me. I can't log into the stupid app, but I don't want to have my credit ruined over this.
I could call the domestic US line but it's expensive on the plan I have now with another company. Is there anyway I could resolve this?
You were told wrong. They still charge your monthly rate (or close to it) even while suspended. They didn't use to, but things changed.
Use X or Facebook (in the sidebar on the right) and contact T-Force. Even if you were in the US, calling is useless. You'd only get someone not helping you again.
Thank you for then information, I had no idea. If I had known they were going to charge me that much I would've just canceled at the time.
Yeah, I read something about them still charging the normal rate even when suspended. That was here, a couple months ago I believe. The policy changed.
Good luck with T-Force. I hope they can help you out.
Hello I've been a Sprint Customer for 10 years with no issues and recently switched to my T-Mobile sim. It's been a nightmare so far in terms of sercice. My current dilemma is that I am on a two hour layover in Montreal, and connecting to Athens Greece. As I feared, I am at the Montreal airport and the phone won't register to a network. It says searching and when I try to manually connect to availble networks it hangs and says they aren't available. I never had issues with the Sprint sim and would always get a text for the data pass and be able to make calls.
I'm also connected to the public airport Wifi, and while it says wifi calling is enabled, the phone wont call Sprint support, 611, or any other number. It just hangs and disconnects.
I'm going to try online Sprint support chat with my phone I guess but just wanted to if this sub had any suggestions. I really can't have this happen in Athens as I have more connecting island flights and need to make calls.
Really appreciate any advice or input. Thanks in advance for any help.
What phone are you using? Have you reset your network settings? Rebooted the phone?
This is one reason I always recommend that international travelers have some form of backup. Skype Out, Viber Out, Google Voice are all good candidates.
Galaxy S21 Ultra. I did try resetting network settings and rebooted multiple times.
Happy to report I did get it working for now though. It was weird, as soon as I boarded the plane, I swapped my Sprint sim and restarted and it wouldn't register to a network. I swapped it back to the TMO sim and restated and was all the sudden connected to the local Telus network and got my Sprint/TMO "Welcome to Canada" text.
Fingers crossed that it works in Greece.
Side note, with Sprint I had to pay $25 a week for High Speed Internet per their text prompt. Do you know if the free TMO international data is high speed by chance?
How can I get faster data speeds when traveling abroad?
T-Mobile customers with qualifying plans (including Magenta, ONE, Essentials, and Simple Choice) can add an International Pass to receive high-speed data. These passes include increased high-speed data options and unlimited voice calling.
International Pass: 512MB of high-speed data at up to LTE speeds and unlimited calling, to be used up to 24 hours, for $5/day.
5GB International Pass: 5GB of high-speed data at up to LTE speeds and unlimited calling, to be used up to 10 days, for $35.
15GB International Pass: 15GB of high-speed data at up to LTE speeds and unlimited calling, to be used up to 30 days, for $50.
If you use all the high-speed data before the designated time is up, you can still use unlimited texting and data at Simple Global speeds based on your current rate plan, or at up to 128kbps for the duration of the pass if your plan does not include international data. The unlimited calling will be available for the full designated time as well. If you activate a new pass, then your old pass expires, and your time starts over using the duration of the new pass.
International Pass high-speed data can be used however you like throughout the designated time. You are not restricted to a certain amount per day.
Try rebooting your phone. I often have to do that when traveling or it won’t connect to foreign networks.
Switching airplane mode off and on doesn’t work. I always have to reboot.
Is data roaming turned on?
I asked because I’m currently in London, and when I arrived a little more than a week ago I didn’t auto connect to anything, which had me perplexed until I realize Data Roaming turned off (on my iPhone XR). Switched it on and voila — I had service, albeit at a measly 128kb/sec. I’m using a local (EE) SIM anyway for cheap high speed data, so it wasn’t a big deal in any case.
Any tips for international plan vs month to month for T mobile. Plan to increase international travel and stay outside the US for lengthy periods of time. What are some options?
many use Tello with luck. T-Mobile limits to 3 months roaming
I’ve exceeded 3months with T-mobile, they only care if you use large amounts of data.
Mobimatter (data only) or eSIM. Net
Thank you both!
buy a local sim card for data and any local calls for that much time abroad, and use the Google voice app for US service with a google voice number.
I had couple family members moved outside of US and I need to make international phone calls to them. I was thinking port out to any of the MVNO which have free international calling feature. After research this reddit forum, I discovered there was a legacy $10 plan for Stateside International Talk with mobile. It is $10/month for all 10 lines in my account. It feels amazing and I don't need to move. Thank you so much t-force :)
Does this $10 account level add on works for T-Mobile one plans ?
This only works on simple choice plans, not one plans.
Hi, how did you get it added to your account? I searched, and it says $15/line. Thanks
I just asked them :) It took them 1~2 hrs to add that to my plan.
I’m guessing you have to be lucky and get an agent who’s willing and able to add it, since it’s no longer offered and hasn’t been for a few years.
Thanks
I’m trying to get that plan added to my family plan
Just to clarify, is OP’s bill increasing by only $10/mo for his 10 lines or is it increasing by $100/mo?
Either way, nice work on getting a great deal!
This is at the account level on the older SC so only $10 for all lines
I got this feature the first day it came out, best decision I ever took. My friend got them to add it a few years later.
I copied and pasted the info from the email but it just kinda hung up and didn’t do much.
A device restart usually helps in such cases. Also, check if Data Roaming is toggled on. Let me drop you a DM as well to check things on my end.
Hi, I'm currently doing an Essential 4 Line Offer with 3 of my friends, and 3 of us are going abroad for summer break for around ~90 days. One of us is staying in the US.
I recently called t-mobile and they said that it's possible for me to suspend the line, but I have to pay monthly for the plan. I also asked if we can cancel the plan, but we won't be able to retain our number if we don't get it within 90 days.
Does anyone know the best way to approach this? I thought if you could suspend a line – you don't have to pay for that line (this is what a t-mobile rep told me). However, I called someone else today and they said the opposite and said I have to pay for it.
Please help.. Thanks!
You can definitely keep those numbers! Let those numbers converted to the cheapest plan like $20 talk & text - with this plan, you can use your number for unlimited texting while abroad for free! Or, you can convert those numbers into the cheapest Mobile Internet line cheapest is $7 on autopay! No need to suspend. Also, if you convert those, make sure you put your friend into 1line price plan and 3 lines on MI type of lines
Why are you suspending the line of the person staying in the US? Doesn't that person still need a phone line while the rest of you are away?
Sorry, I forgot to clarify. Only 3 of us (that are going abroad) are suspending our phone lines. Our other friend isn't.
You can port all 3 lines to Google voice for the 90 days. Your solo friend will be stuck paying 60 dollars for the next 3 months. When you get back, port all 3 lines back into the plan. Porting out to Google voice will cost you $20 per line. Porting the lines back to tmobile after 90 days will cost $35 per line.
T mobile stopped discounting suspended lines back in October . They are normal rate now
A service like https://www.numberbarn.com/ would work. You can port your number there and hold it for like $2/month
