Eligibility and Requirements
To apply for a Best Buy credit card, it's important to have fair credit or better, typically a credit score of 640 or higher [1:1]. Citibank issues the Best Buy credit card, and they generally require applicants to have some credit history
[2:1]. If you are new to credit, it might be advisable to start with a credit-building card such as Discover It or Capital One Platinum before applying for the Best Buy card
[2:4].
Application Process
Applying for the Best Buy credit card can be done online. The approval process can vary; some applicants receive instant approval, while others may need to wait for further review [3:2],
[3:5]. If you receive a message stating that your application needs further review, it is often an indication of a potential denial
[3:3],
[3:4]. In some cases, additional verification steps may be required, such as confirming your home address and phone number
[4:1].
Using Your Card
Once approved, the physical card will arrive in the mail within about a week, but the account is active and ready to use immediately [3:2]. You may need to create a separate login on the Best Buy site to manage payments and check information
[4:1]. Payments can be made online through Citi's Best Buy page once you receive your card
[5:1]. Alternatively, you can make payments in-store, though they may only have access to your last statement
[5:2].
Considerations Before Applying
Before applying, consider whether you have a significant purchase planned at Best Buy, as there may be a signup bonus that requires immediate use [2:3]. Additionally, the Best Buy credit card does not charge an annual fee, making it a viable option for credit building even if you don't plan to use it frequently
[1:1]. However, be aware that store-specific cards often have lower earning potential compared to general starter cards
[2:5].
It’s worth applying for a Best Buy credit card if you have fair credit or better (640+ credit score) and you either shop at Best Buy on a regular basis or you’re planning to make a big purchase there soon. It has great rewards, especially on your first day of purchases. You could also get the card for credit-building purposes even if you don’t plan to use it often. It doesn’t charge an annual fee, but it does report account activity to the major credit bureaus.
Some people get a Best Buy credit card for its special financing offer too. This could save you money on a big-ticket electronics purchase that you can’t pay off right away. But you need to be very careful. The special financing offer has a deferred interest clause, which means you could have to pay hefty finance charges if you don’t pay off your balance on time.
I am the perfect person to give you an answer.
I worked for Best Buy for a year and a half and was the #1 employee in the territory for new credit card applications. During my time I easily signed up hundreds of people. If I recall correctly, I had had 1 person instantly approved with it being their first card. DO NOT WASTE A HARD INQURY ON THE BEST BUY CARD this early in the game. Citibank requires you to have history.
Also, I believe there is a signup bonus for the Best Buy card that you need to use right away, so I would wait until you have a big purchase planned anyway.
For your first card, I would go with Discover. Also, if you're a student, go for that option.
No get a regular starter card like a Discover It, store specific cards seem nice with their intro discounts but their earning potential is incredibly low over time. Starter cards like the Discover It, Capital One Platinum/Journey or a decent secured card from a local credit union are much better options to get started.
No, the Best Buy card is issued by citi bank meaning they want to see some credit history. Plus their APR is higher than a credit building card like a discover secured or capital one platinum. My advice is get a credit builder first, then apply for the Best Buy card possibly a year later.
Im sure this has probably been asked, and i know they tell you "up to 2 weeks" but I applied yesterday and am curious how long it USUALLY takes for approval after applying for a credit card online?
It was instant for me. It asks you which card you want visa or bby only and tells you your limit. The physical card arrives around a week in the mail but the account is active and ready to be used.
I signed up for the best buy credit card and its been almost 32 hours and says they need to review my application before they email me if im approved or not :/
If it gave you the response of "Not instantly approved, will contact you in "X" days" that's generally a decline.
If it wasn't an instant approval, it's probably a denial.
Usually it’s immediately.
So I just applied for the best buy credit card and got this message, " Thanks for your application. Please call Citibank N.A. using the numbers below to provide a few more details and receive a decision." So I called the number and provided the information. The representative said I just needed to verify my home address and phone number, so he sent a text to my phone and then told me "congratulations you're approved for the Citi Visa Credit Card with a starting limit of $4,000." I said thanks and hung up. Then my computer screen refreshed and it shows I was approved for the "best buy store card" and not the visa like I was told.
I'm not too upset about this, however I am confused. I tried calling best buy credit card customer service and they said that they only see I was approved. They said I'd have to go to a best buy store in person and see if it's actually the visa or just the store card version. And if it was the store card, I'd have to apply again for the visa version, but there's no guarantee I'd be approved for the upgrade. I was also told it could result in another hard pull on my credit report.
Has this happened to anyone else? I mean I didn't plan on spending the card outside of Best Buy, but I don't like being told I was approved for the visa when I apparently wasn't.
Yeah you don't want to apply again, since an account was just opened now, could just pull an immediate denial. It could've been an honest mistake from the rep saying that, but guess you won't truly know unless you go into the store or wait for the card to come in. Hope you get it all figured out.
I'm not going to apply again. I'll be honest though, if it is JUST the store card I'm going to be shocked. $4,000 is kind of a high starting limit for the store card version, right?
For a store like Best Buy I wouldn't think so, considering one item can cost as much if not more. I think it's, also, very dependant on the applicant and their credit as well. So hopefully that limit will cover everything you'd need from there, if not more!
Log into your best buy account and look. It will tell you what you were approved for I imagine under payment options
So I do have the BestBuy Visa Card after all. The way to verify what kind of card you have, you have to click on the "check application status" link on best buy. Enter in the information requested to pull up account. After that, click "continue shopping" link and it will bring up the details of your card. It verified that I do in fact have the Visa. However, it can't link the card to my account online until after it arrives in the mail, which is kind of annoying.
Interesting. Make sure you log in and out. I know I was able to purchase on bestbuy with the visa immediately but I had to log off and on and go back to the application status like you mentioned. You'll need to create a separate login on the best buy site for payments and check information for it. This is done on best buys site not Citi. The login is very much like a store card login. It's pretty awkward.
The card hasn't linked to my account yet for some reason, so I can't tell.
Wait for card.
There's nothing they can do for you in store.
the store is useless -- everything from the credit card to gift card usage....their staff are about as useful as lab monkeys.
This happened yesterday but vice-versa 🤷🏽♂️
I’m a student and recently was able to get approved for a Best Buy gold card, so that I was able to get a laptop for school.
I’m just not sure how to make payments?
At the store they used the account at the register, since they would need to mail the card. I went online to see if it would be connected to my Best Buy account, but I’d need to sign into citi, and afaik you can’t get an account until you have a card number at least.
Am I missing something or should I just wait to see when the card comes in the mail?
All the information about setting up and making payments will be included with the card when you get it in the mail. If you’re really stressing about your first payment, you can go into a store and make a payment there. However, they only have access to your last statement so it may show a $0 balance when they look it up in store.
You create an account through citis bestbuy page when your card comes in the mail.
Ok thanks. I don’t know why but I’ve been really stressing about it
You may be able to call Citi and ask them what your payment options are as well. Just tell them you don’t want to miss your payment due date. They typically give you a month before your first bill is due.
Don’t forget when you’ve finished your promotional balance to ask for an upgrade to the no annual fee version of the card.
You got into college?
Hi, I was wondering a bit about the card and if anyone here knows the answer to a few questions. If I get approved online do I get the cards information immediately or will I have to wait for it to arrive to start using it?
If I don't get approved online I heard that it's different in store and was wondering if I could go through the store to get it.
I have never applied for a credit card before so I don't fully know what I'm doing.
You can apply online or at the store. I've heard that online approval rate is not the same as in store approval rate, but I don't know if I trust that since everything is linked to your information, but someone told me it had to do with the verification of your ID and such.
What I know is that if you apply in store, you will make someone's day since they get tracked by application. If you apply, online or in store, you will be able to use the card ONLY in store (they will search your card in the system, you need to provide an ID and enter your ssn). If you want to use the card online, regardless where you apply for the card you will have to wait until you receive the card in the mail.
I don’t believe you’ll get access to all the CC info immediately if approved online, but you will be able to use it to make purchases immediately if you go into a BB store.
The process is fairly similar in store. But I’d recommend doing it in store because it helps the person out, performance wise, who helps you run your credit application.
Good luck! Use it wisely :)
Thanks!
If you get approved online and want to shop in store with out the card give them the number that is linked to that BBY account and have an id ready for us to look it up for you
I’ve been told by the Citi reps that it is better to do it in store. You are more likely to be approved and for a higher amount because there is human verification.
I’ve also been told that if a store has Mag/Pac Sales registers, they’ll generally approve a higher limit. Not sure how true it is, but anecdotally, I’ve rarely seen our Mag register approve for less than $4k
I mean, it makes sense tho.
If you are in the USofA if you apply and are approved online or in store you would use your drivers license or state id to use the card in store. You, to my knowledge (could be wrong), can’t use your card online til it arrives in the mail.
I am thinking of applying for a best buy credit card. I want to get a new tv and maybe some new pc parts to upgrade my rig. I heard some say that if I apply for another Citi Bank card within a 6 month period that it won't do a hard pull on my credit cause they have my credit in file already. I have a card from Citi right now( it's only a gas card, but who knows). Would applying for this card and getting denied appear on my report?
As someone stated don’t get a Best Buy card - who even shops there still... they have higher prices and way less inventory than online retailers (like new egg or you know, Amazon)
Anyhow - just get the amazon or US Bank cash back, they both have 5% back (US bank on electronics stores)
Yes, applying would show on your report as a hard pull. As someone who made the mistake of getting a Best buy credit card, unless you plan to shop there a ton, I really recommend getting something better. You could try for one of the Amazon cards, or the US Bank Cash plus, which has electronics stores as a 5% category.
Title. I need to make a financed purchase relatively soon and was wondering if anyone has any idea how long approval usually takes. The site says 2 weeks.
Go in store, Speaking as an employee, you’ll know instantly, and there have been cases where we receive the “not instantly approved “ message, but don’t be afraid! I have gotten that message and called our direct line to the bank and have gotten the customer approved minutes after !
I'm relatively new to the credit world as I'm recently full time employed. I dont really have a credit history but I have proof of current income, that being $74k per year. Do you think i get approved?
If you have no credit history you will get declined. Sorry
If you're full time.employeed with 74k income and arnt paying out the ass for housing you should be ok.
Im not sure, I applied before working there, with no credit history and was denied. But my income was only 10-14k Soooooo, only one way to find out , Best of Luck !
The website approved me just about instantly
In store you get an instant decision. If approved you can use the card right away. I have heard, though not seen that people can get declined instantly but are approved within the 2 weeks. Otherwise you get reasons for the decline in the mail.
Today I applied for a Best Buy credit card to finance a MacBook for schooling use (college) and wasn’t instantly approved and was told I would hear back from Citibank if I will be approved or not. I was wondering 1. Why I wasn’t approved instantly? I have a credit score of 763. Could it because I have no credit card history? (This is the first credit card I’ve applied for.) or are they just wanting to ask me a couple more questions? 2. How long would it take for them to give me a decision/send me something in the mail? Or could it be possible to call Citibank myself and get it situated/find out a decision right there and then? I appreciate the time to read this and help me out if you can! Thanks in advance!
Edit: I just wanted to say thank you for all the very helpful responses/solutions that I have received and continue to receive! I’d love to respond the every comment but I’d rather do it here so everyone is equally thanked and appreciated. As always I’m very appreciative of the feedback. Again, thanks!
Edit 2: some of you guys are assh0les. I don’t get why some people have to comment on someone’s post to be a d!ck. there’s a lot for me to learn about credit cards and credit scores yes, but you don’t need to be an asshead about it.
Try calling (800) 695-5171. That’s the Citibank application status and reconsideration line.
That number is for Citibank direct line but they cannot help with Best Buy customers, because that card is handled by a special branch in Citibank.
Did you try (888) 574-1301? That’s the general Citibank customer service line for the Best Buy credit card. But I don’t know if they can help with application status or reconsideration.
Length of credit history debt to income ratio I also seen people who have excellent credit history with black amex cards get denied 4 yrs with company
This is so annoying since I’m really wanting to finance instead of paying outright nearly $1,600. I get it but jeez, they make it so hard. Thank you for the helpful response tho!
And if you weren't offered the one with the yearly fee either you will need awhile to get approved then
Question, do you have a credit lock through Experian or Transunion? I've had plenty of clients who have had their credit locked to prevent fraud anx forget about then, but then when they unlock it and we call in, they are instantly approved.
See if your mom will open one and list you as a secondary card holder. That way you can still finance it and get the payments you want. Then get some sort of secured credit to build your history.
You don't have any real credit at this point and they'll likely not approve it, especially for that amount. If you want to start building your own credit look for a secured credit card. Use it every month and pay it off every month.
If you really need that computer see if one of your parents can charge it on their card and let you pay back. Also check to see what you actually need for school - a $1600 Mac is a nice laptop but unlikely you need something at that price point just starting school.
Yep. People don’t understand that a “good” credit score with no history of revolving accounts is a completely imaginary number that won’t get you approved for anything. If you have no credit card history, you’re probably not getting approved for a credit card unless it’s secured or from one of the more predatory issuers.
When you applied, did you give a physical address? I had a customer give a PO Box and it failed the instant approval. After calling CitiBank and the customer providing them with a physical address they approved it. If that’s not it, I would just call them and they can give you more insight.
They have no credit history. They’re not getting approved. It’s not an issue with the address.
I’m trying to get a school computer from Best Buy and I’d like to pay it off monthly instead of paying such a big sum rn. I’m not too diversified in how credit cards like this work. Is it good? Should I just hold off and save the money up? How exactly would the payments look like?
I wish they taught things like this in school :/ I have absolutely no idea how any of this works
I got the BB card over 20 years ago and while I don’t normally recommend store cards, I do like it for one reason. The only time I use it is for large purchases, and there is always 0% financing available for 6/12/18/24 months depending on the amount financed.
Depending on your credit, you might be able to choose the Best Buy Store Card or the Best Buy Citi Card. I'm not sure what the cut off is for credit score or credit history, but the BBY Citi Card is great because you're able to get cashback on every day purchases. I believe they'll send out offers for 0% financing outside of Best Buy. It's also a great option if you need to return and exchange items right away.
If you’re buying an Apple computer, the Apple Card would be another option for you, if you qualify for it.
Citi DoubleCash would be better. Then you could use FlexPay on it.
Usually not.
I think the best buy credit card is one of the few cards I would recommend. I got offered 18 months zero interest on a MacBook pro purchase for my mom. Comes out to less than $75 a month.
Personally it's a no brainer for large expenses there. I used it for a fridge once too.
