Understanding Local Regulations
One of the most effective ways to avoid parking tickets is to understand and adhere to local parking regulations. Ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse, and knowing the rules can prevent accidental infractions [3:5]. Make sure you are aware of specific requirements like displaying paid parking tickets on your windshield, which was a common issue in Honolulu
[2].
Contesting Tickets
If you receive a ticket unjustly, contesting it with proper documentation can be successful. Providing evidence such as timestamped photos or receipts showing payment can help your case [2:1]
[2:4]. Many people have successfully contested tickets by submitting letters or proof of mitigating circumstances
[2:2]
[5:1].
Creative Solutions
Some users suggest placing an old ticket on your windshield to deter new ones, although this method has mixed results and may lead to accumulating fines if caught [1:1]
[4:2]. It's worth noting that private parking companies may not enforce tickets as strictly as city-issued ones, but this varies by location
[4].
Community Service Programs
In some areas, you can work off parking fines through community service programs. This can be an option if you're unable to pay the fine outright, though it requires a significant time commitment [5:6].
Avoiding Common Mistakes
Parking in front of driveways, blocking crosswalks, or failing to display license plates are frequent causes of tickets. Ensuring your vehicle is parked legally and visibly compliant with local laws can help avoid these issues [3:4]
[5:11]. Additionally, always double-check parking signs and restrictions before leaving your car.
Considerations Beyond the Discussions
Beyond these strategies, consider investing in a parking app or service that alerts you to potential infractions or helps find legal parking spots. Regularly reviewing parking rules and staying informed about any changes can also help mitigate the risk of receiving tickets.
Spent $25 to park in the professor lot all year
Tried this. Worked for a decent while. Then tickets started accumulating. Worth a shot.
in south africa, it'll pile up!
Same here in Baltimore. The ticketer will simply look at the time the ticket was issued. After two hours have gone by, they simply add a second ticket.
Fortunately my university had students run the parking services and they never really cared to check!
Someone i know always told the usher he was called to calibrate some instruments whenever there was no free parking Spot available. Brilliant move but he was caught eventually.
I work at a university and they will just pile those babies on until your wiper is a foot from your windshield
I did this! They caught me after 5 months and left a ticket that said nice try. It still saved me loads of money in parking fees!
5 months is a nice run!
What do they mean “nice try” they’ve been getting duped for 5 months this more than succeeded.
Anyone have a recommendation for which option I should choose? I am leaning more towards the former than the latter.
Today, I parked at the Honolulu Dept of Health parking lot (picking up a marriage license with fiance.) First time parking there, I wasn't aware of the rule that you need to display your paid parking ticket on your windshield/dashboard. I paid $4 for 2 hours (only stayed for less than 30 minutes) and came outside to find the parking officer putting the ticket on my car. I remained calm and asked her how should I deal with this since I have a paid ticket in hand. She told me that since I paid for parking but just was not aware that the ticket has to stay displayed on your vehicle before walking into the office, the officer recommended to go "admit but explain mitigating circumstances" route.
I am inclined to take her word for it but just wanted to double-check with anyone else who dealt with this type of "traffic violation"? I was calm and collected in the parking lot but I'd be fibbing if I said I wasn't a little pissed. Especially since, as I mentioned, I had the paid ticket on me, so if anything it seems I'm being fined on a technicality / specific step rather than an understandable offense. I admit I should have scrutinized the ticket from top to bottom before I put it in my wallet and walked inside, but also, this is the first time I've seen where a parking lot makes you put the ticket on the car itself. I'm used to just taking it inside and getting it validated or getting it taken on the drive out. It's frustrating and it sucks a little but just trying to handle this in the most appropriate way. Any advice appreciated, mahalo.
If you had the ticket and it shows the date and time, that you paid for parking, and that info corresponds to the date and time on the ticket then I’d send a scan of the ticket in with your explanation. Otherwise, if not…..just bite the bullet and pay the fine.
I have the ticket and can submit photos that I paid. Ticket says I paid at 11:43am and I got cited at 11:51am: just 8 minutes later!
Open and shut. Just write that in a letter to the judge and mail it in with the ticket (keep a copy.)
I’ve had two tickets dismissed (one with and one without prejudice.)
It’s pretty painless and you have a great mitigating circumstance.
You probably don't even need to submit photos if that's difficult, a letter explaining that should be enough. I got a ticket at the Kalanimoku building because I paid for an hour but my meeting ran 1:15. I sent a letter pointing out that I was a state employee there for a meeting with another state employee, and forcing you to pre-pay like this without knowing how long you'll be is ridiculous. I said I'd pay the extra $2 or whatever but they just dismissed it. If they did that, they'll do it for you where you actually paid the full time. Especially if you note you told the officer.
Be aware that it may take a while, mine wasn't even put in the system until after I was supposed to have paid it. Just go ahead and send your response in now.
I would deny and send proof I paid for parking. Wouldn’t even bother saying I forgot to display the ticket.
Overthinking it. I always plead not guilty. You can send a representative if you're working. Has worked five out of five times for me.
You made the same mistake 5 times?
Yes. Five parking tickets. $0.
Keep the original ticket you bought; send a copy in with your note.
contest, send in documentation showing ticket, timestamped, picture of car timestamped, how you parked, etc. as much details as possible with a letter certifying that. should have it dropped. the ticket is for not paying, not for not displaying it.
I got 2 parking tickets yesterday and I want to fight both of them. How do I get out of them without having to go to court? I’m a broke grad student and was parking for class and with finals approaching, I don’t have time to go to court.
The first is for parking in front of a driveway. I wasn’t blocking the driveway, I took pics of my car and I’m within the raised curb and the curb isn’t painted. I’ve seen cars bigger than mine park in the exact spot I was in with no issues.
The other is for not having a front license plate. I just moved here last year and bought my car from a dealership once I got here. They never gave me a front plate and when I asked, they said I didn’t need one here. What’s up with that?
Normally I’d just pay it (it’s $100 total thankfully) but I don’t think I’m in the wrong and I’m majorly broke so even $100 will affect me.
I’d appreciate any advice 🙏 thank you all!
The New York mob sends their junior members to Los Angeles to take asshole lessons from the LA Parking Division.
I think you’re out of luck.
Sounds like excuses with no accountability to me, pay up.
>I don’t think I’m in the wrong
Not to be a dick, but how so?
While maybe you could have a claim against the dealership if you can prove they said you don't need a front plate, you are ultimately responsible for the legal operation of your vehicle and yes you need a front plate.
With regard to the driveway, was your car completely passed by curb or did any portion of your car extend into the d/w apron (where it starts to angle down)?
Ignorance of the law is not an excuse or reason for innocence.
So you wanna contest the tickets but don't have time to go to court? How you plan on fighting them? You can probably get out of the license plate one with proof. Driveway blocking you're screwed. You're gonn have to dedicate some some time to this or pay it.
The lot enforcement officer will think that you already got a ticket, and should leave your car alone
BONUS ULPT: if you get a ticket for parking at a lot owned by a private company (Indigo, ImPark, etc.), don't pay them. Their tickets are not enforceable, and the only tickets you should pay are those from the City. The companies will harass you and say your fine was sent to collections, but these will have zero affect on your credit and again, it's not enforceable. Don't give them your money
Where I live, they'll just write you another ticket. They don't give a shit. I've gotten two tickets within 15 minutes of each other before.
I used to put any ticket on the nearest expensive hoping they’d pay without checking 😂🤵♂️🤔
The best tips are in the comments!
This is the way.
Yes, thank you!
Nah man they’ll ticket your ass over and over again
Where I live they have scanners nowdays
That second part isn't correct in my state. The college town I lived in farmed out all street parking citations to a third party. "rose city parking authority" gave me a ticket for parking on the wrong side of the street from 3-6am. Naturally as a 22 year old with a $15 ticket, I forgot about it. 90 days later it became a misdemeanor, 120 days later my license was suspended from the Secretary of State.
I got my second ever ticket and the fine is HUGE, over $400 for one ticket. I want to call them and try to talk it down because I literally just cannot pay that. Is that even an option?
It was a dumb mistake on my part for this one. But in the past I tried to contest a different ticket and thought I had reasonable grounds to do so (Unpaid meter, but the address on the ticket was wrong and there’s no meter at that address, the picture they submitted as evidence has the meter in the picture but you can’t see that it’s out, the picture also doesn’t have a date), but they didn’t budge. I’m at the point with that one where if I want to contest it again I have to pay $25 to go in person. Not sure if it’s worth it.
I am 2/2 in getting out of parking tickets I contested.
Did you contest any Red Zone parking tickets? If so, how did you get out of it?!
I got a ticket once for street sweeping.
It was my birthday so I disputed online with "it was my birthday so didn't want to wake up early to move the car and maybe you can make an exception".
Later it got thrown out citing something like technical issues unrelated to my dispute.
But I know deep down it was because of the birthday.
I got a ticket on the day my daughter was born. I considered trying to throw it out for that but... I was too tired and couldn't be bothered.
I wonder if I could have saved $80!
Oh man! I should have tried this. I got a ticket on my birthday too 😭
You can also work off a ticket by volunteering at city approved sites. Including picking up litter.
"Community Service Program | SFMTA" https://www.sfmta.com/getting-around/drive-park/citations/community-service-program
This is an awesome idea... but its also $20/hour so it would take over 20 hours to pay off this ticket
Parked over a crosswalk, so it said “blocking accessibility access”
It was dumb for sure, but god damn 400 fucking dollars is insane. It’s a three way intersection (think T instead of +) and I always see people parked there! So I thought there’s a different rule for that, obviously didn’t think too hard about it
if fines were reasonable, the behavior would not be corrected. the ticket is $400 for a reason. the penalty for impeding accessibility and the freedom of movement for people needs to be inconvenient. your reaction here has demonstrated that the fine is having its intended consequence.
if you knowingly parked over the crosswalk, you deserve the ticket. think about your actions and how they impact others.
there are programs that do work exchange for the price of the ticket but the value of your time was at or below minimum wage. it was easier to just save up and pay the ticket.
>and I always see people parked there!
And that's why they target that intersection for tickets.
You can park in T intersections, but you can't block crosswalks.
I wish they have a way for people to pay less for a first time ticket. Seeing the amount should change behavior but people should get a second chance
"It's hot out here. I'm going for a dip".
Isn't that a police car?
It’s the police they can park where they like!
Some of my neighbors deliberately don’t move their car every two weeks for street sweeping, get a ticket and go on with their lives. Hell, they could have just driven around the block a few times, let the sweeper pass and save themselves $80 on a nice dinner or something like that.
I’ve done this math before, particularly with airport parking.
Leaving for a 2 week vacation? Just get the street cleaning ticket, it’s $70. Far cheaper than the ~$170 to $230 you’d pay for a lot near the airport.
And there is a small chance you won’t get a ticket at all. Has happened a couple times to me.
3 tickets are you get towed! But your math is right. Best have a friend check on it, or park it at my house for a 50/wk fee. I’ll come pick you up for $40 more!
This ^^^ is why casinos on the Vegas strip started charging people to park their cars pre-COVID. They would park their car in a casino parking lot and then take an Uber to the airport.
Tip. Most hotels have shuttles that go to the airport. Just park you car and hop onto the shuttle.
When you come back. Take the shuttle back to the hotel.
Dude do BART long term parking, it's like $7/day and you can just hop on the BART straight to SFO from the garage. Or at least all this was true before COVID, not sure about it now.
You better hope that no one reports your car as "abandoned". Then they'll ticket you, and you have 72 hours to move it before it gets towed.
No one needs to report it abandoned. I've seen meter maids who will make rounds. If they notice the same car they gave a week ago a street cleaning ticket, they'll post the 72 hour notice.
I know someone who works in city government who does the same. His tickets are less than the $300+ lots near work
you're a saint. i love this but doesnt this increase the chance of his car getting a boot?
Are these tickets for street cleaning or 2 hour violations? Because if it is for both you are retardedly lucky for hayes valley for paying only $112 a month. Everytime I break the 2 hour violation in that area I am guaranteed to get a ticket at 2.5 hours, and have easily gotten multple tickets in a week :(
Did they factor in cost of broken windows? I imagine those are a lot more expensive over time than parking tickets. Private garages in SF are for security IMO rather than convenience. Just going by the amount of broken window glass on the pavements!
I had a valid ticket displayed on dash but it was for a supposed different zone from around the corner less the 30m away. The ticket man said its in the system so theres nothing he can do.
Im actually going to be selling the car in the next month so what will happen if ai just dont pay the fine? Or does anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid?

I don’t know why a simple fire from Mako here looks so cool
It's like he's doing a magic trick
"The police have more important things to worry about."
Have you met police? "Revenue generation" is always the #1 priority. They absolutely would ignore an invasion of the city in order to pursue some parking tickets.
Cause hey, it's less dangerous to worry about the city if you can bust two teenagers and make them pay the tickets.
Scumbags.
"IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT! Wait, that guy's double-parked! He needs to be ticketed!" lol
Oh so that’s why he becomes a cop later.
If it works, it works. 🤷♀️
so what I understand from this.. if I get a parking ticket I just have to throw the city into chaos :))
I love this bit. Mako's pragmatic
Funny af how this dude is literally a police officer later~
I mean, tbf it was an emergency, and it’s not like burning the tickets actually means they don’t have to pay them. The city will follow up with Asami (who actually owns the car). Mako was just trying to get Bolin to focus on
I mean with the amount of cops parked illegally everywhere in NYC it checks out
I love how the one who burns the tickets becomes a clean cop and the one who was worried about them works with the villains the rest of the show. (Yes, I am aware Bolin did these things by accident and against his will.)
Bolin's shocked gasp is the cutest thing.
Then sharkboy became a cop
how to avoid parking tickets
Here are some key considerations to avoid parking tickets:
Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with local parking regulations, including street signs and markings. Pay attention to time limits, permit requirements, and street cleaning schedules.
Use Parking Apps: Utilize parking apps that provide real-time information about available spaces, rates, and regulations. Some apps can also send reminders when your parking time is about to expire.
Check for Expiration: Always double-check the expiration time on your parking meter or permit. Set a reminder on your phone to avoid overstaying.
Avoid No-Parking Zones: Be cautious of areas marked as no-parking zones, including fire hydrants, driveways, and bus stops. These are often strictly enforced.
Look for Permit Requirements: If you’re parking in residential areas, ensure you have the necessary permits. Some neighborhoods require special permits for non-residents.
Use Valet Services: If available, consider using valet parking services, especially in busy areas. This can help you avoid parking tickets altogether.
Be Mindful of Weather Conditions: In some areas, parking regulations may change during inclement weather (e.g., snow emergencies). Stay informed about any temporary restrictions.
Recommendation: Always take a few extra minutes to read signs and understand the parking rules in the area where you park. This proactive approach can save you from costly tickets and the hassle of dealing with fines.
