What Redditors are Saying

Overnight Parking Laws in Urban Areas

TL;DR: Overnight parking regulations vary widely across urban areas, and enforcement can be strict. It's important to check local laws and consider alternative options like street meters or residential areas.

Enforcement of Overnight Parking

Overnight parking is often restricted in urban areas, and enforcement tends to be strict. In one discussion, a user mentioned that parking permits explicitly state "no overnight parking," and checks are conducted at night [3:1]. This suggests that if you're considering spending the night in your car, you should be aware of the potential for fines or towing.

Alternative Parking Options

If overnight parking in designated lots is not allowed, there might be alternative options such as street parking. One user suggested parking at a meter on the street where it becomes free after 6 PM [3:1]. Another recommended parking in a garage near a police department for safety reasons [3:2]. These alternatives could provide a temporary solution for those needing to park overnight without violating rules.

Reporting Illegal Parking Practices

In cases where illegal parking practices are enforced by attendants, filing a report with relevant authorities can be an option. For instance, users suggested reporting issues to local government hotlines or specific departments responsible for parking enforcement [2:1][2:2].

Residential Area Parking

Some urban areas may allow overnight parking in residential neighborhoods. In one case, a user found that overnight parking was feasible off Preston in residential homes [5:1]. This could be a viable option if you're looking for a place to park overnight without facing restrictions.

Considerations Beyond the Discussions

When planning for overnight parking in urban areas, it's crucial to research local laws and regulations specific to the area. Additionally, contacting local parking authorities or checking online resources can provide clarity on what is permissible. If possible, seeking out private parking arrangements or accommodations may also be worth considering to avoid any legal issues.

Keep reporting them and maybe send the picture along with the information about the dates of the report to the local news.

What to do sa mga MTPB Parking Attendants that allow/force Illegal Parking?

Posted by bot_account01 · in r/MANILA · 10 days ago

I have a small shop na nasa corner mismo ng intersection.

Problem is bigla lumapit isang MTPB parking attendant kasama ang tanod na sinasabi mag papa park na daw sila sa harapan ng store namin mismo kasi hindi daw sila umaabot quota or whatever.

I argued na nasa batas nga mismo bawal magpark within 6 meters of an intersection/corner. Aside from that, mahaharangan store namin mismo and d na makikita. Wala sila masabi, reply lang nila is utos lang daw sakanila and mukhang pipilitin parin nila.

What can I do? If bumalik sila, where can I file a report that will actually have an effect? Thank you.

Parking overnight

Posted by Lumpy_Upstairs_1258 · in r/SJSU · 11 days ago

Hello. I want to know how strict are the parking. So i have a late afternoon class and then an early morning class the next day. I commute almost 2 hours away. I am thinking of spending the night in my car for that night once a week. I know the permit says no overnight parking, but do they actually check at night? Just want to know your thoughts and what you know.

In case you need to park on campus, I suggest the south garage (not south campus garage), the police department is at the ground floor of that garage so it will be the safest one to sleep inside the car.

They do check. I would park at a meter on the street (free after 6pm) after your late class and before your early class park back in the garage

> In France’s bustling cities, a quiet revolution is taking root. A growing movement of urban gardeners is transforming abandoned lots, forgotten corners, and concrete spaces into lively green oases. Known as French guerrilla gardens, these unauthorized green spaces are sprouting up across the country, driven by passionate citizens reclaiming public land to benefit their communities and the environment.

> Leading this green revolution is Ophélie Damblé, a 35-year-old gardening author and influencer who goes by the online moniker Ta Mère Nature. With over 243,000 Instagram followers and a thriving YouTube channel, Damblé has become one of the most recognizable faces of France’s burgeoning guerrilla gardening movement.

> French guerrilla gardens are grassroots initiatives where citizens plant flowers, vegetables, and herbs in neglected urban areas without official permission. This form of urban agriculture represents a peaceful act of civil disobedience against what Damblé calls “excessive concreting” in cities. While technically unauthorized, these projects often receive tacit approval from local authorities, who recognize their benefits to community well-being and urban biodiversity.

> Damblé operates a neighborhood nursery at Cité Fertile, a former freight station in Pantin, and has been a vocal advocate for this movement since she began sharing gardening videos in 2017. For her, green guerrilla warfare is a tool for getting involved in greening. It’s about reclaiming public space in a completely spontaneous way.

> The French guerrilla garden movement is about more than just beautifying urban spaces. These gardens serve multiple purposes, from fostering social connections to supporting local ecosystems.

> Guerrilla gardens unite people, creating spaces where neighbors can connect and collaborate. Damblé emphasizes that these projects often start as small, unauthorized efforts but can evolve into officially recognized community spaces. She notes that what is interesting is when residents begin taking care of the space. Then, one can think about making it official by setting up an association to safeguard the garden.

> Urban areas often lack green spaces to support pollinators like bees and butterflies. Guerrilla gardeners help provide essential food sources for these vital species by planting melliferous plants that produce nectar.

> In some cases, French guerrilla gardens grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs, offering fresh produce to urban residents. This is particularly valuable in underprivileged areas with limited access to fresh food.

> The French guerrilla garden movement draws inspiration from international successes like those of Los Angeles activist Ron Finley. In 2010, Finley planted vegetables in a neglected strip of land, an act of civil disobedience that initially resulted in fines. However, his efforts garnered widespread media attention and led to legal changes, highlighting the lack of access to fresh produce in poorer neighborhoods.

> Damblé parallels Finley’s work and the growing momentum of guerrilla gardening in France. They are trying to organize urban farms to help people understand all the benefits that plants can bring. It’s not just about plants—it is about social links, food, biodiversity, and creating sustainable urban spaces.

> See also: Guerrilla Gardening and Seed Bombs – How to Get Started

> As a guide for aspiring guerrilla gardeners, Damblé emphasizes the importance of strategic planning and community involvement in urban greening initiatives. According to her, success begins with careful plant selection. Plants must withstand urban conditions and support local ecosystems, highlighting pollinator-friendly options such as lavender and sunflowers as particularly effective choices.

> Damblé recommends using planters or raised beds to address soil quality concerns in urban areas. This approach circumvents potential soil contamination issues and provides garden placement and maintenance flexibility. The expert also endorsed using seed bombs—an innovative technique combining seeds, compost, clay, and water. These biodegradable projectiles can effectively green areas that are otherwise difficult to access or lack nutrients.

> The French guerrilla garden movement attracts diverse participants, from schoolchildren to business professionals and retirees. Damblé’s workshops at Cité Fertile draw people from all walks of life, united by their shared passion for gardening and urban renewal.

> French cities are increasingly adapting to this citizen-led initiative. Some municipalities now offer permits for urban gardening projects, recognizing these spaces’ value to their communities. This shift reflects a growing understanding of urban agriculture’s role in creating more sustainable and livable cities.

> For Damblé, gardening is more than just a hobby—it is a universal language that brings people together. She finds that people always find a way of understanding each other when they talk about plants.

> As French guerrilla gardens flourish, they demonstrate how citizen action can drive positive environmental change. Urban residents reclaim their cities, foster community connections through these green spaces, and make France’s urban landscapes more resilient and environmentally friendly.

Any spots except reserved spots are fine from friday at 5-monday 7am. Unless it's a game weekend, then you have to avoid certain areas. No game this weekend, but there is one next weekend.

Where is a good spot near campus for visitors to park during the weekdays? Specifically overnight. The two main parking garages on campus are only open to visitors from Friday 6pm-Sunday 11pm.

Overnight on the weekdays? Literally just on campus as long as you’re off before 8. Comm Ave also works.

How far are you willing to walk? There are non-residential parking spaces not too far away. Down lake street on Washington and then down on Chestnut Hill Ave around Moogy’s. You can also park in beacon street on the Boston side of the line (from Merkert to Shea Field) but you have to be able to get up and move it in the morning by 9 I think.

Check the signage. There’s part of Chestnut Hill Ave towards the top (like near south street) where you can’t park. But a little further down you can.

Overnight Parking Options in Providence, Rhode Island without a parking permit

Posted by Regular-Series-3557 · in r/providence · 13 days ago

I moved to Providence for just a couple months in Summer 2025 and needed a car for work. It was not possible for me to acquire an Overnight Parking Permit so I explored the other overnight parking options in Providence. There was very little information that I could find anywhere including here on Reddit so I decided to do my own research!

I went around the city stopping at as many parking garages and lots I could find to discover the best overnight parking options. My findings, as well as the best options per chunk of time are in the attachment.

you actually can get a permit here without switching your registration, it just costs more ($200 maybe?) than the regular resident permit.

Can confirm. My car was unfortunately still registered in East Providence when I applied for a Providence parking permit, cost an extra $100 so a total of $200 for the year.

overnight parking laws in urban areas

Key Considerations for Overnight Parking Laws in Urban Areas

  1. Local Regulations: Parking laws vary significantly by city and even by neighborhood. Always check local ordinances or the city’s official website for specific rules regarding overnight parking.

  2. Residential Areas: Many urban areas have restrictions on overnight parking on residential streets to prevent non-residents from using them. Some neighborhoods may require permits for overnight parking.

  3. Commercial Zones: In commercial districts, overnight parking may be prohibited or limited to certain hours. Look for signage indicating parking rules.

  4. Street Cleaning: Be aware of street cleaning schedules, as vehicles parked during these times may be ticketed or towed.

  5. Parking Garages: If street parking is restricted, consider using nearby parking garages or lots that allow overnight parking, often for a fee.

  6. Temporary Permits: Some cities offer temporary parking permits for residents or visitors, which can be useful if you need to park overnight.

Recommendation: Always read posted signs carefully and consider using apps or websites that provide real-time parking information for your area. If you're unsure, contacting the local parking authority can clarify any specific questions you have about overnight parking laws.
