TL;DR Use a combination of Spread and Roundabout weapons, along with Smoke Bomb charm for dodging. Focus on learning attack patterns and timing your jumps and dashes.
Weapon Choice and Strategy
The most recommended weapon loadout for defeating the Devil includes the Spread and Roundabout shots. The Spread shot is favored for its high damage output at close range, particularly useful during the second phase [1:5],
[2:2]. The Roundabout is effective for hitting enemies off-screen or when you need to keep moving
[1:1],
[3:2]. Some players also recommend using the Lobber in the first phase
[1:6].
Charm Selection
The Smoke Bomb charm is highly recommended for dodging the Devil's attacks, especially during the first phase [2:1],
[4:2]. It allows you to dash through obstacles without taking damage. An alternative is the Twin Heart charm, which provides extra health but reduces damage output
[2:3].
Attack Patterns and Dodging Techniques
Understanding the Devil's attack patterns is crucial. For the hand clap attack, jump and dash away from the hands as they move off-screen [2:1],
[2:8]. During the bubble attack, stay mobile and use smoke dashes to avoid getting cornered
[5:1]. In the second phase, focus on parrying bombs to prevent them from exploding
[3:1],
[5:1].
Phase-Specific Tips
In the first phase, prioritize dodging over attacking and parry any pink objects to gain EX power [3:1],
[4:3]. For the second phase, use Spread shot and save your super attack for maximum damage
[5:1]. In the final phase, staying in the center platform can help manage incoming projectiles
[5:1].
General Advice
Persistence is key. Study the Devil's attack patterns and practice your timing for jumps and dashes [3:3]. Watching speedrun videos can provide insights into optimal strategies and timings
[2:8]. Keep trying different combinations of weapons and charms until you find what works best for your playstyle.
For the life of me I just can't beat the devil so if someone could give me tips to beat him that would be great.
So basically what I did:
I had lobber and roundabout and I basically just weapon switched them during the first phase the entire time while jumping in the middle of the screen and parried any parriable object on the screen. And save my super (Super Art I) and waited for the second phase then use it immediately. After that, I just stayed in the middle and dodged the axe from the best of my ability and make sure to always parry the bomb so it doesn't explode while only using roundabout and you get more EX power. In the third phase use your super if you got it and just use lobber for the purple devil and roundabout for the devil. In the final phase which was the easiest, all you have to do is basically dodge the chip that is falling down without touching the raindrops, just jump back and forth from the middle ad in about 10-20 seconds of attacking him, you have beaten the final phase!
Idk if this works for other but give it a try and also my charm was the charm that gives you 5 hp
Thanks for the advice but I actually just beat the devil but still thanks.
I'm with you on this; I can't seem to beat him either. That being said I HAVE found a couple things that work most of the time.
If you get the fireball attack (four fireballs on the outside, 1 on the inside) you can usually just outrun it. If you get caught in a tight spot by it jump and dash through it to the other side, but wait until the fireballs are in a relatively square shape as opposed to a diamond. Otherwise, you WILL get hit by it.
Use roundabout. I know a lot of players seem to favor spread, but spread doesn't deal its highest damage unless all the shots connect. Also, roundabout is pretty good for clearing the little demons that run across the screen during the first phase, as well as dealing damage when he's in his serpent form and spider forms and when you're dodging other attacks without having to worry about aiming.
One thing to keep in mind is that the first phase ends after you've dealt around/just over 4 cards of damage. Try to get to that threshold as fast as possible. Again, roundabout is helpful here. Occasionally you can time it just right to where you can build up your super meter fully (5 cards or more), thus shortening the subsequent phases. During the subsequent phases the poker chips will fall either left to right or right to left, so you can mostly just stay in place and attack until the chips are about to fall on you.
Hope this helps! Good luck!
The first phase seems like forever
Thank you!
Use spread, and roundabout. When he’s not attacking jump and use spread, any other time use roundabout. For his second phase use spread
Ok thanks!
I'm partial to the roundabout and actually use that the entire Devil fight. In the first phase when the flames appear, get on the outside. When the bubble thing appear, jump to the inside. When he does the hand clap thing, jump up and left then dash right before hitting the ground. The last phases take practice but roundabout does a good job killing adds.
lobber phase 1, spread for everything else. jump right into his eye and use spread special
charge, spread and Twin Heart
Hey guys!!Would anyone have any tips or hints on how to beat the Devil? Been trying for almost a month now and just cant seem to get it.
uhhh, I don’t really know because i barely fight the devil. what i would do is use roundabout for the first phase, and spread for the rest of the fight. And whatever else you figure out is helpful
Try buying the twin hearts or an extra heart. It will help live a bit longer and Start seeing its attack patterns Like anything in the game, don't panic. For the second and third phase, try jumping back and forth from the center and to one of its sides to avoid the projectiles when needed.
The things that I strangely struggle with is the handclap during the first phase and the axe in the second...maybe having a extra life would be better but doesn't it reduce you're damage alot?
The handclap has a slight delayed timing. You need to practice jumping and hover dashing. Try counting how soon it transforms to its hands reaching you. I do struggle with it a bit because the knee jerk reaction is to jump as soon as he transforms. Yet, the cool thing to do is chill and jump a split second later. Try studying the speed run videos to see exactly how to jump and dash back to center.
For the Axe, stay in the center platform while hitting it. As soon as the Axe comes out, go to the right or left platform. It will start go in a circle towards you. This is the time to jump back to the center. Also, I like alternating between the left and right platforms. If I went to the right platform when the Axe came out, I would go to the left platform next time the Axe appears.
I couldn’t get past the tear crying phase without taking a hit so i tried to play the first phase perfectly so i had enough HP to tank a few hits underground
I just started playing and I'm in hilda berg lol can't seem to defeat her any tips I always die from those ufo s
What worked for me is during the last phase I minimized myself and stayed close enough to her that I could still inflict damage and being smaller helped for dodging evrything
I defeated her but thanks for the tip
What I do is bring roundabout and spread, with smoke bomb for the charm and the first super move. The best way I've found to counter the clap is that about when the devil moves his hands off the screen, jump in one direction (I usually jump left when I'm on the left side to make things easier) and dash the opposite direction to stall long enough to not get hit. (You can also stall by using an ex move in midair.) As for other general strategies for the first phase use, parry whatever you can because that's less stuff headed your way, and if you have to deal with the orbit attack then either jump and smoke bomb out of there, or in you can't do that (in which case fair enough) then the odds aren't too unreasonable to reset and hope for better RNG. When I end the first phase I end up with about 4 cards. (I forget how often I use ex moves, it might just depend on how many things I parry to make sure I don't get 5 cards)
On the second phase the hurtboxes for the devil are close enough to where you can just jump into the eye and use your spread ex move a few times for massive damage, but using the super move might do double damage here because it hits twice (not sure about this but it makes sense to me). When the axes spawn I find that a good strategy is to first avoid the axe by standing on an outer platform, then go to the center because it won't be there anymore, giving you time to get a bunch of spread damage in. For the bat bomb you can either just avoid it or for a risk and reward thing you can try to parry it.
A lot of the fight, at least to me, is getting the first and second phase down consistently so you have some wiggle room for the third phase which imo is the hardest part of the fight. A lot of it comes down to how well you can maneuver on the ground and in the air, and smoke bomb (mostly practice though) helps out a lot in that regard.
I just made it to the Devil (got the game Febuary 14 yeah I know I’m late) and can’t beat it. I keep getting to the last phase while using spread, chaser, and switch back and forth from the extra hit point and smoke bomb. What charms and shots should I use and how should I beat him?
I use charge shot on the first phase, focusing my attention on dodging. I use roundabout on the second phase, spamming EX shots into his eyes (you can hit all 8 spread EX bullets if you position right). And continue using spread shot on phase 3. It's pretty hard to dodge on phase 3, but it's also a pretty short phase.
For charms I use coffee for more EX shots, but you can use smoke dash if you're not confident in dodging during phase 1.
same as always, keep trying, remember all atacks and after that, stop playing to think a little about how to dodge the atacks, keep doing that until you get a strategy for all atacks, and then just keep going until you made it, c'mon, if you made it that far, you can beat that bitch :) it's all about using your head
Thanks for the support! :)
Just beat the devil out of it
just beat him
Couple of tips... Like Cala, his first phase can be a little bit of luck since many of the attacks are far easier to deal with than others. My advice is stick with smoke dash and if you take a hit, retry. Weapon loadout is fine, Super Art 2 is a good idea to hang onto till the end since you can sit on it till the chip falls, use it and spam that spread right up into his ugly mug. Phase 2 is manageable, generally, and Roundabout drops the side guys pretty fast on phase 3.
Thanks so much! I’m going to try it out next time I log on
Damn fuck its hard
Want some tips? So the best fire option would be the red spread. The secondary one can be anything because you’d be mostly using red spread. Obviously use smoke bomb to avoid the devils attacks in the first stage. The second stage dodging wont be exactly useful because you have limited tiles. Always go for the rising rock in the second stage to do massive damage to the devil (red spread) during the 3rd stage, i find it easier to shoot on the left side. Always get the purple thing on the left before attacking and after that just aim up the whole time to shoot the devil and the blue bats at the same time. Finally in the last stage when you feel like your in danger use the invincibility. I’ll explain more tips rn
So basically what you’d wanna do in the first stage would be to spam the jump button with the red spread and move when the tiny demon approaches. During his goat attack, there are two ways to avoid being damaged, 1. You can use a super attack to stay up in the air. 2. You can jump up high and then as you start falling use your dodge. I’d always parry the pink attacks when its safe if you feel in a tight spot during a projectile attack, smoke bomb might be useful. Always keep moving when a certain attack is targeting you
And thats how you can get a good score when beating the devil. (Also its always good to even move alot while jumping to avoid projectiles in the first stage)
Thanks for rhe tips, when i played him i used spread and charge, smoke bomb and invincibility are 2 thing i always used for almost every boss.
And during the spider attack, you can play it safe and just keep dodging, however if you want to damage him, he is vulnerable for less than a second before his head lands on the ground. Before that happens, I always shoot him a little and the dodge out of the way
I wish you luck
Yo i beat it yesterday lmao. Thx for the good luck tho <3
On my way to wish you good fucking luck cause you'll need it
Lmfao i did that 2 days ago
Yeah, can’t get past this guys second phase. Most of the time I don’t even get past his first because of the frikin bubble attack. Rly wanna beat the game before the DLC comes out, so any info works.
Well we did it reddit. Just beat the Devil. I got a B+ for those wondering
Alright, the devil gave me hell (ha.), his second phase I used the spreadgun attack and saved a super attack for him. Notice that the flaming hoops coming down come down in order. I typically try to jump between the middle three platforms for the axe attack. Make sure you get the parry on the bombs, the direction he turns his head indicates which side the bomb will exit on. Good luck! For this third and last stages, again, keep an eye on the flaming hoops and I would advise sticking to the center unless you have to avoid a hoop.
2nd phase is easy but first phase is so stupid. Its so long so even every 30 mins when i get to 3rd phase i still lose. And the fork attack are just stupid
A good shot gun to use for him is the spread
Spread + smoke dash for first stage. When the third stage comes and he spawns more minions then switch to roundabout or charge to take out the guys on the side. Use invinciblity super if needed
I am new to the game and I got quite recently and I am going for the platinum trophy on it and I can't beat him
I went divine relic, and honestly, I beat him in way fewer tries than when I did it on normal
The Crackshot is great against him.
Too late my guy already got the platinum but thanks for trying
Oh.
If you got the DLC, playing as Ms Chalice is really helping !! I personally played as her and used crackshot + roundabout + Super Art I (for the last part) when i wanted to S-Ranking this big boy. It should only take you a couple of tries until you beat it !!
A little too late I already got the platinum but thanks for trying
Crap! Good job for the plat then :)
Update: I finally beat him after like 2.5 hours (all together) for the winning round I used Twin Hearts, Charge and Roundabout w super art 2.🥳🥳
Im doing my first play through of Cuphead and while some bosses have been challenging ive been able to overcome them without to much trouble. But once I got to inkwell Hell everything changes…….KING DICE I HATE YOU, IVE SPENT 1.5 Hours DYING OVER AND OVER. I’ve tried different weapons, smoke bomb charm and twin hearts. NOTHING WORKS. And yeah ik it’s probably just a skill issue 💔💔Can anyone give me the ideal loadout to beat him or any tips/tricks. Before I throw my controller (again) 💔
I dread for when the time comes I’ll have to face him.
By now, I’ve beat him 4 times already. He’s actually pretty fun. For some reason though, I struggle with rolling the dice. Like, I try to roll a 2, and end up with 3. Like I’d literally make it to the end, I’ll say “don’t roll a 2, don’t roll a 2! Roll a 3-“ ends up rolling a 2 and now I have to start over.
King it's just a scream of soul (ironic isn't it?) i have beaten you on S rank today, on GEO difficulty and it was quite easy! So they're just haters don't lose the mood! (Yeye I'm surprised myself that i support you but uh... Yeah)
The loadout I use is charge shot and the triple lighting shot from the DLC shop along with super one and smoke bomb. King dice is a marathon not a race so don’t be scared to burn your cards, you will make them back. A lil tip with parrying the dice is that if you spam parry right as he claps the number will always be a one so just focus on fighting as few bosses as possible while also stock piling the health spots
Alright thanks 🙏🏽, Ill go back and try again after work lol. Hopefully keeping my sanity this time….
I'm Mr. King Dice, I'm the gamest in the land

Don't mess with King Dice (don't mess with King Dice)
Don't mess with me
This Is the Song of king dice on the Cuphead show??!!😭😭😭🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
That's my song
KING DICE, IM YOUR BIGGEST FAN!
If you’re really struggling, try this advice.
use P.sugar as it’s easier to hit the dice on the number you want and dodge the cards at the end which is objectively the worst part.
easiest route imo is bosses 1, 4, 8. Retry if a bonus heart doesn’t land on two of them.
double parry each card to give you more time to jump to the next one. I don’t use smoke bomb for him because you need to see yourself the whole time to time it properly and the auto parry makes it way easier.
Good luck!
I disagree wirh psguar you can kinda spam a for the parry on the dice. You just have time find the right timing anyway. But as I said in my other comment it is mostly preference
Why make me suffer 😞
My brother just got Cuphead yesterday in hopes of adding to our list of indie games we've played; little did the two of us know that this game was hard as balls. Bro, y'all make this look so fucking easy doing it without taking damage. HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!
It is formally known as The Great Cuphead War in my house. 300 percent on all 3 saves. About 3 years ago. It is my greatest achievement to this day.
Why is it a war? Did it have any casualties? (smashed controllers do count)
Just git gud mate
Just kidding, the game is all about muscle memory, be cartain that these people that finish the game without taking damage, already died A LOT before being able to do this
I'll have to try several times before you remember "Now the boss will do this, now an enemy will appear here"
I'm currently s ranking the devil and king dice. P ranked and s ranked everyone else. I had a little under 500 deaths after a+ everything the first go round on normal (including the run n guns), and I did a ton of resetting. I'm sure I'm now over a thousand and I've still be resetting. It's also my first time playing lol
I won't even try to S rank everything, would like to, but my mental health is more important
So in other words…
Just git gud mate
>HOW DOES ONE BEAT THIS DAMN GAME!!!
Infinite amounts of trial and error, building skills more and more across a period of multiple hours a day, trying new strategies, retrying old strategies,
and a WHOLE lot of dying.
İn sekiro terms
Git gud
I think those are hollow knight terms...
imo the most satisfying part of the game is in your own skill progression. I’m stuck on the Devil in the base game, but I know I will beat him eventually - the fight is fair and it’s just a matter of fine-tuning my reflexes and responses, as it was for every other fight in the game.
I was looking at my boss fight scores and noticed that I got a B- for Goopy Le Grande and an A- for Dr. Kahl’s Robot, lol. The game truly does get easier with practice (and a lot of patience).
It can be really hard lmao, I got it without knowing how hard it was and didn't play for months, honestly it's really hard to beat bosses the first time but you do get the hang of it, the people making it look easy have just been through the rounds
At some point, you just become
7 years ago I played Cuphead for the first time, but it was too hard and I gave up. 3 years ago, I decided I wasn’t a quitter, finished what I started and beat Cuphead for the first time. 1 month ago, I decided to play it again for the first time in 3 years. I had forgotten about expert mode, I thought it would be fun to play a few bosses at a higher difficulty. Then I thought, hell, I can ace the first boss and got an S Rank, boy that was cool, I can’t possibly S Rank all of them…
I’m happy to announce, that today I S Ranked The Devil without any extra heals or DLC cheese. I am getting ready to play the DLC for the first time. But I have no nostalgia for the DLC, so S ranking that entire thing I’ll consider a bonus (DLC weapons and charms are fair game now).
I S Ranked Cuphead. Fuck Yeah!
(Oh, acing The Devil on Expert was way harder than the internet led me to believe it was going to be. That first phase I could not consistently get passed without taking a stupid hit)
I actually did the same thing. Bought about 3 years ago finished Isle 1 and quit. Just finished the dlc last week
I’m terrified of the salt guy, I’ve heard things.
That's just the people who try S rank expert. Normal is easier than the devil imo
Only really hard if you want to S-Rank it (no hit) otherwise it's not too bad in comparison with what you've already achieved.
Congrats! I just got this game on PS5 and I plan to get S rank on all bosses including DLC as well. I recently got the DualSense Edge and have adjusted everything to max comfort so I’m READY!
I have no idea what DualSense Edge is, but my reccomendation is to change the controls to your liking. I didn’t like the standard buttons. My custom setup was:
Fire: L2
Special Weapon: R2
Change Weaopn: (Press) Right Joystick
oh the Devil on Expert was a real deal, and doing a S rank was an even bigger deal, idk how internet tends to make you believe is easier than Dr. Kahl Robot, tho maybe it's because i have played games like Undertale Yellow that led me to get some skills at those types of bullet hell
Trust me, the DLC makes it way easier. Astral Cookie made every boss except the plane ones a lot easier.
True, that's why personally I kept playing with Cuphead. Found it more interesting.
Me and my girlfriend have started playing it again after like a 3-year layoff. We are both terrible but it's fun to get hyper focused on one thing and the elation when we beat it.
Currently stuck on the clown rollercoaster dick (yes we are that bad).
How to beat the devil in cuphead
Beating the Devil in Cuphead: Key Considerations and Strategies
Understand the Phases: The Devil fight consists of three distinct phases. Familiarize yourself with each phase's attack patterns to anticipate and dodge effectively.
Phase 1: The Devil's Attacks
Phase 2: The Transformation
Phase 3: The Final Form
Use Super Arts Wisely: Save your Super Arts for critical moments, especially during the final phase when the Devil is most vulnerable.
Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t get discouraged if you don’t win on your first try. Each attempt will help you learn the patterns and improve your timing.
Recommendation: Equip the Spread shot for close-range damage and the Charge shot for long-range. The Smoke Bomb charm can also be beneficial for dodging attacks. Remember to stay calm, keep practicing, and you'll eventually conquer the Devil!
