How to Build a Base in Subnautica

TL;DR To build a base in Subnautica, craft the Habitat Builder tool using the fabricator, gather materials, and scan fragments for blueprints. Start with simple structures like corridors or multipurpose rooms.

Getting Started with Base Building

The first step in building a base is crafting the Habitat Builder tool. This requires a wiring kit (made from two silver), a battery (copper and acid mushrooms), and a computer chip (copper, gold, and table coral) [2:1][3:3]. The blueprint for the Habitat Builder is available at the start of the game [5:6].

Finding Blueprints

To expand your base, you'll need to find and scan fragments for additional blueprints. The multipurpose room can be found on the floating island or near the rendezvous point indicated in your PDA [2:3][2:5]. Exploring wrecks and abandoned bases will yield more blueprints [5:1].

Basic Base Structures

You can begin with simple structures such as corridors or T compartments, which can function as temporary bases [4:3][4:4]. Adding a hatch and solar panels will provide access and power [4:2]. Wall lockers, fabricators, and radios can be placed inside these structures to store items and craft resources [4:2].

Base Orientation and Structural Integrity

When placing your first room or component, consider the orientation and height, as this sets the alignment for the rest of your base [1:1]. Reinforcements are crucial for maintaining hull integrity and preventing flooding [1:7]. Foundations made with lead and reinforcements with lithium are recommended [1:7].

Power and Resources

Solar panels are effective for powering your base unless you're deep underwater, where bioreactors become essential [1:6][1:8]. Growing food plants early on can reduce the need for water, as many foods provide hydration [1:6]. Alien containment tanks can be used to breed fish for biofuel and food [1:9].

By following these steps and exploring the environment for blueprints, you can build and expand your base efficiently in Subnautica.

I’m new to the game and I’ve got a habitat builder. I’m playing around with the habitat system and planning to have each major part of the base go to each one of the pillars of rock in the picture. Sorry if the pic isn’t clear enough. Anyway, like I said I’m new to it so any tips on base building and the game in general would be great. Also, I do know there are better places for a base to be

Tip: If you want a multipurpose room on each pillar and want them all joined up, you might have to mess around constructing, deconstructing and realigning them until you get them all in the right place --connected base pieces must all align to a grid, and the alignment of that grid is set by the alignment of the first piece you place. Good luck!

A good rule is to build a foundation first, in the direction and position you'll want all your base to be. The grey part of the foundation will point in the direction of the moonpool's exit.

Good tip —this is the direction the seamoth will face when docked? My current base, has the seamoth facing away from the exit, which I find is convenient enough

great location imo. tips? reinforcements are much better than foundations for hull integrity. try to keep things like the fabricator and storage all in one place. seen so many run back and forth wasting time. build a lot of solar panels. then the bioreactor. I usually put down a foundation and make 6 of them. scanner and hud chip asap.

Yeah, I was gonna have maybe three solar panels, one bioreactor and the fabricator, the radio and some lockers to start before I build anything else

Once you have the bioreactor up and running I suggest getting an alien containment tank set up nearby and use it to breed Reginald fish. They are the second best natural bio-fuel source and also double as the most effective (fish) food source.

ChainLC · 5 months ago

I go ham on the solar panels because copper off the reefbacks is pretty sweet and easy. and quartz is too in the red grass. not worrying about power is great. then when you add scanner room or moonpool you don't have to powering up first. and there's a big reserve so your bioreactor doesn't eat so much.

Wgen you are able to, go to sea treader's path, and use the Alien Feces as fuel. It's the best for the Bio Reactor and the Sea Treaders are friendly

For power, unless I am deep in a cave I use solar power and nothing else. Nothing else is needed. You can run everything you need, including multiple water purifiers. 2 purifiers make more than I can drink.

Start growing food plants as soon as possible. Once you start growing the right foods you won't need water. You will get all the water you need from the juicy food you eat.

If you find the alien containment throw a couple of bladderfish in there and you will have limitless water. Same goes with the reginald or peeper. Throw a pair of those in and you will have limitless food. I prefer being a vegitarian in game though, it's simpler.

RelationshipOk3565 · 5 months ago

Do you need to throw two of the same fish to breed?

1 upvotes on reddit
No-Neighborhood-936 · 5 months ago

Watch your structural integrity. That is one of the most important things to remember. Go negative and your base will flood. Foundations made with lead and reinforcements made with lithium are pretty much mandatory

One trick with bases is that once you put down the first room (or component), the orientation and height of your base is set. I'm not sure which of those rock pillars is taller, but you should probably start your first room on the taller pillar, so that by the time you extend your base to the second pillar, what happens is just that the legs underneath are slightly longer.

Doing the opposite, starting on the lower pillar, may mean that you can't build because the taller pillar's rocks collide with the position where the room needs to be.

I am still an early game player despite knowing about some late game stuff like the Sea Emperor, lava castle, sunbeam and more. However... HOW DO I GET A BASE?! My reference for playing Subnautica is 8-bitRyan's playthrough. I've searched everywhere around the safe shallows and even in the nearby creepvine forests. And HOW do I get the fragments for the main room for my base?! I was hoping you all could help me out with this, since I prefer figuring it out by a post rather than the fandom since that could contain big spoilers. Can you start a base with another room instead? Is the multipurpose Room obligatory to be the first part of one's base?

Please, I'd love to know.

The Habitat Builder is the tool you're looking for. Check the fabricator for the recipe and you should be able to craft it right away.

You need to do some exploring for fragments. Once you unlock the multipurpose room, the large room will also unlock.

2 upvotes on reddit
EnoughPenguin22 · 7 months ago

The fragments for the multipurpose room are located in the vicinity of the rendezvous point you should have in your PDA (which the location is acquired by going to the fallen life pods).

However, if you build the habitat tool, it comes with some base components that can function as a small temporary base. Hope this helps :)

In order to build a base you need to use the fabricator in your pod to make the Habitat Builder tool. The blueprint is already given to you when you start the game, and you just need to collect the materials for it:

  • 2 Silver to make the Wiring Kit - silver is found in Sandstone outcrops (darker chunks of rock that you break), usually found in deeper caves in the Shallows or on cliff walls in the Kelp Forests or Grassy Plateaus.

  • Copper and acid mushrooms to make a battery.

  • Copper, gold, and table coral to make a processor. The table coral requires a knife, so you can cut it off the rock walls where it grows.

Initially your base will have to be just a platform and some combination of T, X, and I shaped tubes, with a hatch to enter and some solar panels on top, for power. Those tubes have straight walls on the inside, perfect for installing lockers on them, a fabricator, a radio, etc. It's very useful to have A LOT more storage space and to sort it by materials. You'll consume a lot of titanium, copper, quartz, etc. during the game, so you need the space for it.

For "specialized" rooms, the moonpool room lets you dock a vehicle inside, and it's quite important for actually progressing the game. The multipurpose room is more along the lines of "nice to have", as it offers more space, and the ability to install a bioreactor inside for more power. But you can get "more power" with just more solar panels, or a thermal plant once you find it.

Anyway, to find the blueprints for these rooms, you generally just have to follow the radio signals and "go investigate" wherever they lead you. Don't just go to the pod or location that called for help, also swim around a little bit and look for wreckage; big chunks that exploded off of Aurora and sank to the bottom of the sea. Some of these wrecks are big, and may have doors or corridors you can enter through, to scan blueprints inside.

You will need a Scanner device to scan blueprints. You may need a Repair tool to jury-rig some of the panels to open some of these doors. And you may need a Laser Cutter device to cut through some of the doors.

So the knife, scanner, flashlight, repair tool, etc., all of these are critical tools to build early in the game. Also the sea gets deeper, so don't forget to build high capacity oxygen tanks (breathe longer) and fins (swim faster).

Anyway, here's a low-spoiler map, just has the zone names. The central zones all the way to Grassy Plateaus have a lot of the basic materials and tools, and the Mushroom Forests will probably have the Moonpool.

Like I said, you'll get radio calls from various pods to come help them, and they'll be in these zones, so explore around once you've helped them.

Sorry if this is a really dumb question but I can’t Figure it out. I’ve been to the aurora and the floating islands and scanned all the rooms and furniture and such I just can’t figure out how to make them now. I also can’t figure out how to upgrade items. I’ve mostly been exploring and stocking up on recourses. I assume you don’t use the fabricator to build bases or upgrades so what am I missing? I have the sea glide, sea moth, laser tool, propulsion cannon and all the other basic tools like the repair tool and stuff.

The “Habitat Builder” is one of the blueprints you start the game with. You make it in the fabricator. It’s one of the more complex recipes for early-game, though.

You have to build the Habitat Builder tool. After that you use the tool to place base components with the resources in your inventory.

Simplest base to start I think is a foundation with a multipurpose room on top, plus hatch to get in and out.

Upgrading items is done by building the modification station in your habitat.

  • with a hatch on the underside and some solar panels on top will last you for a bit. Build some wall lockers and a fabricator and a radio and whatever else on the walls. Follow thru the story normally following the locations you get from the radio and the PDAs and make sure you explore the surrounding areas thoroughly and Scan Everything and by the time you have a need for the bigger rooms you’ll have found the blueprints for them.

You have to scan the structures first in order to be able to build them. Explore the map to find them, or just follow the storyline and it will eventually lead you to them.

The base rooms you can scan are always on the same predetermined spots on the map, but I really don't wanna spoil that for you - it's a cool discovery to make organically, and in the meantime you can use the tube structure that comes with the habitat builder, they basically work the same.

Help with Base

Sooo... I need some help 😅 This is my second time playing Subnautica. The first time, I didn’t even make it to the >!Lost River!< — but this time, I actually got there!

Thing is... I’m extremely scared of literally anything even remotely creepy in this game 😬 So now I’m procrastinating instead of exploring further. My procrastination plan? Building a better base 😂 But I kinda suck at it. Right now, I just have a tiny base in the Safe Shallows made of a few corridors, a Scanner Room, a round room with some storages... and a floating moonpool — it’s super cramped and honestly kinda ugly. (Image attached)

Any tips or suggestions for building a good-looking and efficient base in a nice biome? Please help 😭🙏

There are several, but they don't wander far from where you see them. The smaller aggressive creatures are more widespread, but they only attack you or your vehicle. If it's up in a moonpool it will be fine, and your cyclops is safe from them as well. Just have to make your way past the big ghost leviathans.

You could make the moonpool your whole main base if you wanted and just put all your lockers, fabricator and stuff on the walls in it. The only thing you can’t put in there and would need a large room for is a Bio or Nuclear Reactor if you were using that for power, or an Alien Containment if you wanted an aquarium for feeshies. If you’re using solar or thermal power you can just put everything in the moonpool if you wanted. You could also have a few corridors on the moonpool walls to give yourself additional room for storage or whatever else.

It's mostly just personal preference.

Early in the game I will build a small starter base in or near the safe shallows to give me a place to store all the resources I gather.

As I start being able to go further out, my favorite place to build my primary base in a spot on the edge of the safe shallows near a thermal vent and close to the jellyshroom caves. This spot gives me access to both solar and thermal power to keep a larger base running and a deeper area next to the base where I can park my cyclops and build my moon pools for the seamoth/prawn.

As I go into some of the deeper areas to explore I will build small base to act as outpost so I don't have to make frequent trips back to my primary base.

Took a while, but I found an ocean planet where I could put my base at the boundary between the deep water biome and the more shallow one - both very pretty. This also allows for a surface landing pad.

After mapping resources, my base is situated so it extracts lithium, quartzite, and oxygen with everything powered by EM generators. To do this, the base computer sits alone at a spot where extending the base boundary allowed for all those resources to be within 950u. The base building itself is placed for the view within that radius.

I got a couple. Like with almost anything in NMS, half the point is just for shits and giggles, and I find the aesthetic of underwater bases have a certain kind of charm. A kind of calm beneath the waves?

Anyways, they can't do anything that an above-water base can't also do, but I still made quite a couple of them, especially when there'd be both a gas cloud and mineral mining nearby. I have one as my dedicated oxygen producer for that save, one producing nitrogen on a paradise planet, and one as my Activated Quartzite generator on a purple system.

I went a little wild with them on the fishing update. When fishing was introduced, I found it pretty viable to create one just beneath the waves where I could 'aim' my fishing rod upwards to the surface of the water for 'underwater fishing'.

But mostly? I think they're just neat.

I haven't built many underwear basses, but I'll take a crack at this. First, consider using electromagnetic generators as your power supply. After that, try assembling a small base using underwater prefabs. From there, you can expand outwards. You might not want to build too deep either. That'll let you build a landing pad for your ship, so it doesn't spawn underwater when you use your teleporter.

Spend less time on building a base right now, and more time looking for wreckages and things to scan in the world.

There are many blueprints that will make building much, much easier, and they are only found by scanning parts or wreckages. If you need more storage space, just build a couple tubes in a line and fill them with storage and essentials, to act as a storage unit.

You said "life pod". If that's what you meant, then you should know that you can't add or build onto the starter life pod. You need to find and scan other base parts (like the basic room or large room) and build a base from that.

skaggiga · 3 months ago

And then with that.. yeah, base building can be a little rough. you need to make sure the part is rotated the right way (try turning thingd 90 degrees - like the monopool or scanner room). and then swim in and out and move camera so it moves closer and farther. sometimes the right place to drop it is father away then expected for it to attach since it has to add a little connector when you add into the larger base pieces.

How to get started with building a base?

Posted by Zzyxzz · in r/Subnautica_Below_Zero · 4 years ago

Hello, I'm pretty new to Subnautica BZ and I can't figure out how I can build my own base. Where do I get the Blueprints from to build my own base? I played many hours and still have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I started to play with salad days patch, which was in June, July 2020? Something like that.

follow the waypoints you are given and you'll find the blueprints you need

Yes, that what I have been reading everywhere, but I got no waypoints. They should be from a quest or something like that, but they never appeared for me. I didnt want to start new, as I collected so many stuff already.

You trigger them by exploring, just wander couple meters away from drop pod and it'll be there

Two ways:

1:Go to twisty bridges and find the single base piece, you will find a habitate builder there.

2: go to top of rocket island and find the Habitate builder there also

Note you can only do initial pieces, you need to scan the large rooms, and the smaller rooms also. So explore and scan everything new you find

Ah ok! Thanks a lot! I will check it out, specially rocket island. I think I wasn't there

So i noticed a typo where it said "intake" and not initial. My statement still stands though that you will have the find the rooms and such. You only have access to limited builds in the beginning.

how to build a base in subnautica

Building a Base in Subnautica: Key Considerations

  1. Location:

    • Choose a location that is safe from predators and has easy access to resources.
    • Consider building near kelp forests or coral reefs for abundant materials.
    • Avoid areas with high radiation (like near the Aurora) unless you have a radiation suit.
  2. Materials:

    • Gather essential materials like Titanium, Quartz, and Glass.
    • Use your scanner to locate resources efficiently.
    • Keep an eye out for Salvage, which can be converted to Titanium.
  3. Base Components:

    • Foundation: Start with a foundation to create a stable base.
    • Hatch: Install a hatch for easy access.
    • Rooms: Use multipurpose rooms for space; they can be expanded with additional components.
    • Power Source: Include a Solar Panel or a Bioreactor for energy.
  4. Interior Setup:

    • Add essential items like a Fabricator, Storage Containers, and a Water Filtration Machine.
    • Consider placing a Bed for saving your game and restoring health.
  5. Expansion:

    • As you progress, expand your base with additional rooms, observatories, and more advanced equipment.
    • Use Reinforcements to strengthen your base against pressure at deeper depths.

Tips:

  • Use the Habitat Builder tool to construct and manage your base.
  • Regularly check for leaks and repair them to maintain base integrity.
  • Consider building a base at different depths to access various resources.

Recommendation: Start simple and expand as you gather more resources. A well-placed base can significantly enhance your survival experience in Subnautica. Happy building!
