How to Build a Moonpool in Subnautica

TL;DR To build a moonpool in Subnautica, you need to find and scan moonpool fragments located primarily in the Mushroom Forest, Dunes, Mountains, Sparse Reef, and Grand Reef. Once you have the blueprint, use the Habitat Builder to construct it.

Finding Moonpool Fragments

Moonpool fragments are scattered across various biomes in Subnautica. The most recommended location to find these fragments is the Mushroom Forest [3:2], [4:1]. Other locations include the seabed, wrecks in the Dunes, Mountains, Sparse Reef, and Grand Reef [4:1]. Exploring these areas with a compass can make navigation easier [4:3].

Building the Moonpool

Once you've collected enough fragments and unlocked the moonpool blueprint, you can build it using the Habitat Builder. Ensure that there is adequate space for placement, as moonpools can be buggy to position [2:3]. It's often helpful to start with the moonpool and then connect corridors or other base components to it [2:8]. Contrary to some beliefs, the moonpool does not need to be underwater, though it may look odd if placed out of water [2:6], [2:7].

Using Console Commands

If you're having trouble finding fragments or building the moonpool, you can use console commands to unlock it directly. Enable the console by pressing F1 and F8 to uncheck "disable console," then use the tilde (~) key to open the console. Type "unlock moonpool" to get the blueprint instantly [1:1].

Placement Tips

When placing the moonpool, ensure there is no obstruction on the inside surface of the corridor you're trying to connect to, and verify there's enough space for the connector [2:1]. If facing issues with direct attachment to intersections, try adding an additional corridor section [2:5].

Additional Resources

For upgrades related to your Seamoth or Prawn Suit, you will also need a Vehicle Upgrade Station, which can be found in data boxes at Grassy Plateaus Wreck, Mushroom Forest Wreck, and Sparse Reef Wreck [4:1].

You need to scan fragments and then make it with the habitat builder

If you enable the console (F1 and f8 to uncheck disable console, then use the ~ key) and type in "creative" you can build the moonpool without resources, then use the command "survival" (or freedom if you don't play with hunger) to go back to normal. If you need the blueprint, type in "unlock moonpool" instead

Moonpool placement problem

Can someone help me and tell me why I can't put the moonpool? There's nothing around it, I tried to extend the corridor, but it didn't work, I can only place it one level down, but then it doesn't connect with the corridor.

Moonpools need to be underwater

I saw a video of the moonpool in that position, and I also saw a post on reddit by a guy who put her moonpool out of the water (I don't know how), and Google says that it has to be put in water to be useful and not that it is necessary

It has to be at least with the bottom edge in water… so it’s likely that videos you saw had it positioned just slightly lower than yours is here.

I'm reliably informed by many commenters that the moonpool doesn't have to be in the water (although I will say it looks very odd out of it... and a bit, heh, immersion breaking... pun not intended, honest).

So, we're back to the Subnautica 'why can't I build this base piece' usual suspects: something on the inside surface of the corridor you're trying to connect to, or not enough space for the connector joint (not the case here I think but frequent with scanner rooms), or... well, gremlins.

Moonpools can be buggy to place, I have found that sometimes you need to start with the moonpool where you want it, then build off of it to connect to your base.

Wolflover640 · 2 years ago

The fix for this I suggest is using the vertical tube to lower a path into the water, then adding a section of hallway. It should build onto that so long as it is deep enough.

The image of the video that I got the idea from, and in the video I saw that the foundation was higher than mine

Tweetledeedle · 2 years ago

Maybe it’s too close to the T, try adding another I section between the I and attaching the moonpool to that. It’s been a long time since I’ve played but I seem to remember not being able to attach rooms directly to “intersections”

FoilHattiest · 2 years ago

No, he's not, I just now jumped into the game just to try it and built a moonpool right away about 10 meters up into the air, above the water surface.

Whatever OPs issue, it's not that the moonpool is out of the water. Something else has to be interfering with its placement.

-__-PSYCHO-__- · OP · 2 years ago

In the video he made the foundation beams visible outside the water, this means that the foundation in the video is higher than mine

Here's the image, my foundation is not like this it is right on top with the water

Moon pool fragments can be found in the northwestern mushroom forest so just make a compass or if you already got one just go northwest until you find a place with a lot of tree looking things

Corridor sections can be really useful as fast easy bases.

Particularly when underground near heat.

I used section with fabricator, thermal generator, battery/power cell chargers and a couple of lockers as way points which were within swimming distance.

So if something went wrong I had a bail out route to get back to the surface (but I'm a bit paranoid)

1 upvotes on reddit
Over9000BPM · 5 years ago

You can still put lockers and chargers on the walls in the corridors so they’re not useless.

2 upvotes on reddit
Over9000BPM · 5 years ago

You sure can. I think you can even hook up thermal generators to them (Not tried that myself, but in theory it should work). No bio or nuclear reactors though, they do need a room.

Multipurpose rooms can always be found at the degasi bases on the floating island. Idk where you can find moonpools tho, as I'm struggling to find one myself.

Its okay. Sometimes I like to take my seamoth, aim for the bottom opening, and go as fast as possible into it.

This has, at least once, caused my seamoth to be able to fit through the black circle.

Yeah, these corridors modify the wall behind them as well. There could be something installed behind one of the walls, or even too close, and it would prevent new stuff being installed.

I go to her from the Tree Spires. One of the ventgardens is perched over a series of fissures (the more southern one, I think - watch for chelicerate) that, if entered, will eventually take you to a dark cavern with glowing spots everywhere. Her base is on an outcropping in the middle. The entrance to the crystal caverns is close by.

You might be able to get there from the lily pads but I don't remember!

[No Spoilers] If you create a moonpool and punch it with a prawn the moonpool starts to flood. If you go in the moonpool while it's flooding with a seaglide, the seaglide will be super fast because the game think you are swimming and walking at the same time. Its so fast that the map stops loading.

How to build a moonpool in subnautica

Building a Moonpool in Subnautica: Key Steps and Considerations

  1. Requirements:

    • Blueprint: First, you need to acquire the Moonpool blueprint. This can be found by scanning fragments in the game.
    • Materials Needed:
      • Titanium x 3
      • Lubricant x 1 (crafted from Creepvine Seed Clusters)
      • Lead x 2
      • Glass x 2 (crafted from Quartz)
  2. Location:

    • Choose a suitable location for your Moonpool. It should be near your base or a safe area where you frequently explore. Ensure the seabed is flat and deep enough to accommodate the structure.
  3. Construction:

    • Use the Habitat Builder tool to construct the Moonpool.
    • Select the Moonpool from the blueprint menu and place it on the seabed.
    • Ensure it is connected to your base or other structures for easy access.
  4. Functionality:

    • The Moonpool allows you to dock vehicles like the Seamoth and Prawn Suit.
    • It provides a place to recharge your vehicles and access upgrades.
    • You can also use the Moonpool to enter and exit your vehicles easily.
  5. Upgrades:

    • Consider adding a Vehicle Upgrade Console inside the Moonpool to enhance your vehicles with upgrades.

Tips:

  • Make sure to keep your Moonpool well-lit and consider adding a Solar Panel or Thermal Plant nearby for power.
  • Regularly check for any potential threats in the vicinity, such as aggressive creatures.

By following these steps, you can successfully build and utilize a Moonpool in Subnautica, enhancing your underwater exploration experience!
