Cleaning a mattress is an essential task that can significantly improve the freshness and hygiene of your sleeping environment. Here are some effective methods and tips gathered from various discussions on how to clean and deodorize your mattress:
Basic Cleaning Steps
Vacuuming: Start by vacuuming the entire surface of the mattress to remove dust mites, debris, and loose dirt. Pay special attention to seams, crevices, and edges where dirt tends to accumulate [4:2].
Baking Soda Deodorization: Sprinkle baking soda generously over the mattress and let it sit for several hours or overnight. This helps absorb odors. Afterward, vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly [2:1],
[3:1].
Vinegar or Alcohol Solution: For additional freshness, lightly spray a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water, or use rubbing alcohol instead to avoid a sour smell. Let it air dry completely before making the bed [4:3].
Stain Removal Techniques
For stains, especially older ones, consider these approaches:
Hydrogen Peroxide Mix: Spray a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water onto the stain, let it sit for at least 20 minutes, then wipe with a cloth. This method is particularly effective for organic stains like sweat [5:1].
Baking Soda and Water Paste: For sweat stains, dampen the area slightly, sprinkle baking soda, and let it sit for about 15 minutes before vacuuming. Repeat if necessary, and consider using a hydrogen peroxide mix for persistent stains [5:3].
Enzyme Cleaners: These can be useful for breaking down organic matter in stains. Use them according to the product instructions [5:5].
Additional Tips
Steaming: Using a handheld steamer can help sanitize the mattress and kill dust mites without soaking the fabric [2:3].
Sun Exposure: If possible, expose the mattress to sunlight for a few hours. Sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant and can help reduce odors [4:5].
Mattress Protector: Invest in a waterproof mattress protector to prevent future stains and make cleaning easier [1:2],
[5:1].
By following these steps, you can maintain a clean and fresh mattress, improving both the lifespan of the mattress and the quality of your sleep environment.
Any tips on how to clean/de-odor a mattress?
I've had my mattress for several years and have never cleaned it. It actually never occurred to me to clean it until recently. Buying a new mattress isn't possible for me at this time. I noticed no matter how much I clean my bedroom (sheets, floors, clothes, air the room out, room sprays...) it gets a little musty after a few minutes of the door being closed...Leading me to believe it's the mattress as it's the only thing I haven't cleaned.
if you can rent and borrow a carpet cleaner/steam cleaner you can get stains out pretty good, just don’t get it too wet, especially if you live somewhere humid. baking soda or enzyme cleaners can help to deodorize the bed. and definitely invest in a waterproof mattress cover.
First, vacuum it up. Then spray some disinfectant, wipe it down with a wet wipe. Put on a fitted mattress protector, so you'll only need to wash it.
What are the best solutions (pun intended)?
You could try a carpet steamer that puts hot water and cleaning solution into the stain and then sucks them out. Or you can use any type of carpet cleaner in a bottle or can and apply per the directions. The most important thing is to thoroughly clean the areas and make sure it can dry out for at least 2-3 days. I would even spray Lysol on it too once it's dry from the other cleaning. Then get a nice mattress cover; there are several options, and then you can put the rest of the bedding on it.
Thanks so much, artinthecloset.
I use a hand steamer every time I change the bedding
What brand?
Me too!
I've had different brands over the years. Any would work.
Thanks Charliegirl.
I sprinkle it with baking soda and let it sit. Then I have a handheld vacuum with a heat based UV light on it to kill dust mites. I do this every time I change the sheets.
Thank You very much Disastrous_Return83
Nine that you came back to this
Like I was my sheets, the quilt, the pillows - what about the mattress itself? Definitely doesn't fit in the wash
Carpet or upholstery shampooer. Ideally you'd have a mattress cover over it and under yout sheets to not have to actually wash the mattress.
If you're really worried that your mattress is dirty you can rent a carpet cleaner from the grocery store. It will be wet for a while afterward so you need to plan to sleep on the couch for a day or two.
That said, I've NEVER cleaned a mattress. If it makes me uncomfortable then I just buy a new mattress pad and change the sheets.
Do you live in a cold climate?
As a Canadian, I make it a point to move my mattress outside for a cold winter day once a year. 12 hours at under -12C will kill the dust mites living in your mattress. Knocking the population back once a year helps reduce allergen production.
Never cleaned a mattress. Always go buy a new one or turned it over. Here’s your chance to see if mattress firm is an illegal front.
Sister here not a dad,
Is this for for general maintenance? If so water cleaning is overkill. When you strip your bed next sprinkle some baking soda on it and let it sit for a few hours and then vacuum it up. (just an FYI some folks say to use a shop vac instead of a regular vacuum because it might damage the vacuum. But it's not like you do this every week and I haven't seen any problems with it)
Make sure to twist your mattress regularly for even wear too.
I really do not recommend using water to clean a mattress unless absolutely necessary for like urin/vomit etc stains and you cant afford a new mattress. The reason being moisture & mattresses don't mix. It's great situation for mold to develop especially this time of the year (unless your in the southern hemisphere) if you do have a stain I'd get two kinds of cleaners.
1st: An Enzyme Cleaner like Puracy's Stain Remover
2nd: Oxygen Bleach (Biokleen's OB or Oxy-Boost is better than Oxiclean).
Spray the stain and let it sit for up to an hour. Once done mix up the Oxygen Bleach in HOT water to dissolve it. Once it's dissolved (and cooled off) put it in a spray bottle BUT Do Not attach the nozzel until you're ready use it! (At best it will just dribble out of the nozzle at worse it could explode cause it's creating a gass ) and when not in use remove the nozzel. Oh and the solution can't be saved as after 6 hours it's no longer active.
Spray the stain let it sit blot and repeat until the stain is gone. Then using an extractor (carpet cleaner) to remove as much moisture from the spot as possible. Don't sleep on iyt again until it has completely dried.
Next time you get a new mattress invest in a waterproof mattress cover then all you'll really need to do is vacuum it periodically to get rid of skin cells & dust mites and their feces.
Lastly: r/cleaningtips is a great sub for things like this.
TL;DR: Vacuum matress, if trying to rid of smells sprinkle baking soda let sit for few hours then Vacuum. For stains Read the method above.
I noticed my sheets were starting to smell so I took those off to wash but noticed the smell has continued and realized my mattress also had the same smell. The smell isn't anything crazy, just a sweaty smell but somewhat noticeable so want to get it sorted. I did have a mattress protector on but that doesn't seem to have done much. I'm a broke college student so can't afford any fancy deep cleaning or anything like that, so was just wondering if there any tips/tricks to sort it a little easier.
AI confirmed what I was thinking.
Rubbing alcohol instead of vinegar. You don’t want your bed to smell sour.
Yep this is exactly what I do, except for the baking soda part.
I'd also just add airing the mattress regularly.
This, but for 3 add some vodka to the bottle. It’s a fantastic freshener and it doesn’t hurt your fabric. Use it on both sides of the mattress and around the edges.
If you can get the sun on it for a few hours it'll help "bleach" it baking soda on it then vacuum it will help. That's what is do
Wash pillows too
“Mom, I really need a new mattress. This one smells.”
That would TOTALLY work on me.
Mom?
...I have a question.....
(I'm trying to be funny, but that was so weird to say. My mom died 16 years ago, when i was 24, so it's been a long time since i said that. Dang .... )
Use a clothes steamer on it
No idea for stains I would check manufacturer manual or labels. For future reference tho bro put some sheets on that or a mattress protector
Sweat is acidic so you'll wanna go with baking soda, spritz the stain with a bit of water and dust it with baking soda. You don't want it wet, just damp. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and then vacuum it up. Give it a couple treatments and that'll at least get a good portion of it out
If the stain still persists after a couple treatments give it a light blotting with a hydrogen peroxide water mix.
spray with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water, let it sit for at least 20 minutes before wiping it down with a cloth! can be harder with older stains but i find this better than the smell of vinegar lingering. i also recommend buying a mattress protector (waterproof is best) you can get good ones for $20 dollars usually
I had good luck adding a bit of dawn to that as well. Worked like a charm.
Maybe an enzyme cleaner and one of those small carpet cleaners for spots?
Ooof. I need the same advice. I've given up on the sharpie stain, but the brown sweat?!? Stain scares me
There's nothing wrong with it really, I just can't stand the idea of sleeping on a mattress for a long time and not attempting to clean it. Of course I wash my sheets once a week and hot water but the mattress itself, I'm just wondering if there's a way to clean it.
Once it is clean, buy a zipper allergy proof cover. Not the super cheap ones that crinkle, but nicer ones that are breathable but still offer a lot of protection. Add a mattress pad over that - thinner ones can be washed with the sheets.
Thank you

Move it into the sunlight for a day? Or steam mop?
You can put down carpet deodorizer or baking soda and then vacuum it up.
There are also commercial cleaning services for mattresses.
Baking soda does nothing, and the carpet power crap is just baking soda saturated with air freshener
Thank you
I've had covid all week and i was so shot that i couldn't even shower. Now i feel better. I've washed my self and I'm washing the sheets and pillow covers. But then i noticed I've probably got a lot in my mattress. So how do i clean that? Its a twin and i don't think i can spray resolve all over it. Is there anything i can do to clean it up at home or do i have to just flip it over?
think they have steam cleaners for that or you could wrap it tight in plastic and leave it in the hot sun for a few hours each side
I like your steam cleaner suggestion. I shall look for one to rent asap. Thank you.
if you choose either suggestion make sure you buy some food grade diametatious earth and then sprinkle itover the entire mattress before usage this will help wick out moisture andbugs dont like it. all though too much of this stuff will dry out your skin.
wow i helped? look look everyone i helped!!!!!!
Spray down with Lysol or other fabric-safe disinfectant.
Spray it with an antibacterial spray and let it air out for a few hours. Don't over spray it or it'll take quite a while to dry. You can also purchase an antibacterial mattress cover and most of them are washable.
Mattress cover? Interesting. Like the bed bug ones right?
Exactly but they have different types so just get what you need.
I have a mattress topper to protect my mattress---I wash the topper approx once a month, change my bed linens weekly. I will do spot cleaning on my mattress if I see any stains (my dogs sleep on the bed with me) and vacuum if I see anything nasty like fur balls from my 2 little dogs.
I was wondering how many of you actually clean your mattress. Does anyone actually clean the mattress--vacuum? steam clean? spray sanitizer on it? How often do you "clean" your mattress? Do you think a mattress topper is sufficient to maintain my mattress or am I suppose to be doing something more?
It is worth it to care for your mattress or just throw it out after a few years?
The most you should do is vacuum it with a special attachment for upholstery. I would recommend using a waterproof mattress protector under your mattress pad though. This has kept my mattresses pristine and like new for 7 years so far
Yeah I vacuum it and a bunch of fine dust comes out
I'm pretty sure that dust is mostly skin cells 🫣
I don't clean my mattress. Imo it's not really a cleanable item. I use a mattress protector that goes all the way around it and zips shut. And then I have a fitted protector that I'll take off and wash monthly. I don't have animals in the bed and the bf causes soft spots in the mattresses so I see them as something I'll get new every 5-10 years. I also like a hard mattress so getting a thinner, hard mattress isn't too expensive
I have an airtight allergy cover and waterproof pad cover. Never. It's as clean as the day I bought it.
I scored a hand held steamer from Aldi and I use it every four months or so,just to surface clean and knock down the dust mites. As far as replacing mattresses,I've had everything from a 3k euro top to an Amazon bed in a box and darnedest thing, that amazon king with a 4 inch topper is more comfortable than most premium bedding. I used to rotate for even wear, but I have my spot that conforms to me,if I try to sleep on my husband's side, well then I don't sleep. It's 2 years old and was under $400 so I feel justified in replacing it within the next year or so,if needed. One thing I won't comprise on is washing linens in hot water 1x per week and getting the best sheets I can afford. Brooklinen at an AirB&B ruined me to use anything else.
Never. I’m 70. I have never cleaned a mattress. I protect it with 2 mattress pads and a sheet. I have never spilled any liquid on a mattress. I agree they are not a cleanable item. All you will do is mess it up.
Spot cleaning and vacuum once a month, otherwise it’s really not necessary to clean it.
To sanitize it at least, put a steam mop or garment steamer on low and carefully steam the top layer, making sure the mattress doesn’t get soaked. Leave it to dry without sheets for a day. Has worked for me on traditional mattresses, hybrid with foam top, and Sleep Number. From there I’d flip the gross side, put on a zippered waterproof protector, a nice foam pad, and deep pocket sheets that won’t pop up while your asleep.
A carpet shampoo such as Vanish oxi-action power-spray pet would be your best bet. The trick is to use a damp white cotton t-towel or old towel and wipe, wipe, wipe as the dirt transfers from mattress to cloth. Probably take a few applications, just don’t over wet it product
I will check it out.
have you ever seen a dirty mattress cut open?
Let's not think about that
Dude, that’s a goner!
Sorry OP. Time to buy new. You can surface clean but any water or cleaning substance will soak through. You can't really "rinse" a mattress.
If you cannot purchase a new mattress, buy a mattress pad to provide a nice clean top to sleep until you can.
Agree 100%.
Usually you don't need to wash the actual mattress if you use a top mattress and a mattress cover that can be washed in a regular washing machine.
Has anything happened to it? It doesn't look very dirty to me.
Should never be sleeping on a matress without a water proof cover. It's a matress it really isn't mean't to be cleaned it's mean't to be protected & replaced eventually
I never slept on it . I just found the dirty spot when i take out matress portecter to wash it . If you wondering how i found about it now its beacuse . I have 2 potect matrss i always wash the second one and never touched the first one cause i didnt care much at the time . I think the dirty first portect matrss was so dirty that it got into the matress it self
I use water proof mattress covers myself. They make them so they feel like material and not like plastic. You can find them at Walmart.
They machine wash and last for years. IDK if you are worried about odor or a stain, but the waterproof mattress covers will hide regular body smells. If it is a little extra stinky, I saw some people on tiktok pour baking soda on it and brush it around a bit. let it sit, then vacuum it up. Add a water proof mattress cover back on and you should be gtg. If it is pee, I would use a hand held carpet cleaner like a Bissel little green portable carpet cleaner and after sucking up the wet, spray vinegar and water and suck it up a few more times. Let it dry completely then do the baking soda.
I think you already did a very good job judging from the picture. Let it dry and see what remains.
Bicarbonate soda and white vinegar (in a spray bottle) also helps. Spray and let it sit for an hour. Wipe it with a wet cloth or wait until it's completely dry and vacuum.
Johnny Depp is this you?
Too soon?
