TL;DR
Frequency of Washing
The consensus across discussions is that bed sheets should ideally be washed once a week, though some people stretch it to every two weeks [1:1]
[3:3]
[5:11]. This frequency helps maintain hygiene by removing sweat, skin cells, and other bodily fluids that accumulate over time
[1:6]
[5:2]. For those with allergies or pets, washing pillowcases more frequently, such as every few days, can be beneficial
[3:5].
Washing Process
When washing bed sheets, it's generally recommended to use warm water and a regular wash setting. If your sheets are heavily soiled, you might opt for a heavy setting [2:1]. Separate colored sheets from whites to prevent color bleeding
[2:1]. For sheets with mixed colors, consider washing them separately to avoid any potential issues
[2].
Multiple Sets of Sheets
Having multiple sets of sheets can simplify the laundry routine. With at least two sets, you can swap out dirty sheets immediately and wash them at your convenience [4:1]
[4:8]. This approach prevents the hassle of having to wait for sheets to dry before making the bed, especially if you don't have a dryer
[4:5].
Additional Tips
Consider using mattress and pillow protectors to extend the life of your bedding and reduce allergens [3:5]. These covers should also be washed periodically, albeit less frequently than sheets
[4:4]. Showering before bed can help keep sheets fresher longer
[5:1], and ironing pillowcases can give your bed a luxurious feel
[5:3].
Lifestyle Considerations
For those who prefer a clean environment, adopting habits like changing into home clothes before entering bed and maintaining a shoes-free home can contribute to overall cleanliness [5:12].
i havent in a few years so i was wondering if its a normal thing to wash bed sheets. i spilled something on them and just realized that i could wash my bed sheets
Absolutely. You should wash them at least every few weeks
You mean every week, right?!?
Pro-tip: Buy a second set, so you can have one in the wash (or in the cupboard) and one on your bed.
I usually wash them every 2 weeks, though I probably should do it every week
You should wash them once a week or every two weeks......
Big time. In a perfect world I would say every couple weeks but no one does that. I try to remember to do it once a month or so. The amount of skin, sweat, other bodily fluids etc you gotta wash those things!
I do that. Every week. Clean warm sheets are amazing. So easy to clean with little effort might as well do it every weekend
I really hope your just trolling. If this is a real question i can only imagine the smell coming from your bed
Shoot. I've tried everything! Risky candle..... Bed smell bad.
A FEW YEARS?!
Okay, stupid question right? I've never done laundry before and my cat puked on my bed while I was at work. I put my pillow case, bed sheets, and 2 blankets (ones kinda on the big side) and I think they fit.
I put the detergent in there already, but what setting do I put it on? There's whites, permanent press, and colors, all with the quick wash, light, regular, and heavy setting. Do I use cold, warm, or hot?
I also have a blanket with mostly white but still a lot of color. Should I wash that separately since the other stuff is mostly black and grey?
If it matters, they're twin size sheets, FNaF themed sheets and pillowcase (yes FNaF ik, I plan on buying a whole new bed set lol), and the big black one is fluffy. The mostly white one is a character blanket and it's kinda like a comic book page. It has color and all but it's about 60% white. No clue what texture the sheets and pillow case is but I can definitely say it is not silk.
To start off love the fnaf separate the colored sheets. I'd go with whites or light or regularfor thin sheets I'm poor so I use cold or warm doesn't really matter since you'll be drying it. The thicker ones I'd use heavy or regular on warm ti get the wet our easier
Hope that helped
Hey y'all!!
So I'm going to be leaving for college in a little over a month and wanted to know how often bedsheets should be washed.
I grew up in a household with very poor hygiene and laundry habits. Bedsheets would get washed no more than twice a year which I know is not enough. When starting this new chapter in my life, I would like to leave dirty bedsheets in the past.
Aside from after spills or after getting bodily fluids on it, how often should bedsheets be washed??
It can be helpful, even if you don’t change the sheets, to put on a new pillow case if you have just washed your hair.
There are usually two per sheet set, so the numbers work!
I like to wash mine every week, sometimes I push it to two. You can also buy something called a mattress protector/topper, I wash ours every couple of months.
I recommend having at least one extra set of sheets so if your current set gets dirty unexpectedly you can change them out right away without having to do laundry. If you have a romantic partner over who might be in your bed, throwing on the clean sheets before they get there is a nice touch.
Okay good you answered my next question--how often the mattress protector needs to be washed. I was unsure about having two sets of sheets but having an extra seems like the way to go.
Thank you!!
I have three sets. 😬
I'll wash two sets when I put the third on, and have two clean. But that was just a personal way of solving my hatred for doing more loads of laundry after getting married.
I’ve gone for years at a time with a single set of sheets. It’s doable if finances are tight…but if you can manage it get the extra set. It’s SO much nicer to strip off the old sheets and immediately put on the clean ones. Then you aren’t scrambling to get the sheets on the bed at midnight…or just saying F it and sleeping on the mattress protector.
If you have easy access to laundry (washer AND dryer) you can mostly get by with one set if you start the load early enough. Right now we have one nice set of sheets that get washed and put back on the same day. I do have some cheaper backup sheets too but that almost gets used.
Just to add to that, I buy two of the same set and if I can get a lone spare fitted sheet or two I grab that too. Most accidents happen on the bottom one and having a spare for emergencies is great around exam time especially if you can't spare time for laundry. It's also great to be able to just swap out the bottom sheet when you're on week 2 and get your period unexpectedly, spill something etc. Always happens at the wort time. Ikea has great budget sheets and you can get singles in addition to sets that all match.
When I went to college (way long long ago!) the dorm provided the sheets and this included weekly laundry service. You just had to remember to strip your sheets and leave them out in the hallway on a specific day. I guess they don't do that anymore?
I wash sheets weekly and remake the bed. There is one set of back-up sheets in the linen closet just in case. The mattress protector and pillow protectors get washed only once a month, maybe more often in the summer if we're particularly sweaty. Bedspread and blanket gets washed periodically as well -- about once a quarter.
I actually use a silk pillowcase for my pillow as it aids in my hair (which runs on the dry side) in reabsorbing oils and keeps my hair from knotting up. I also find it's super cooling so no hot pillow issues! I hand-wash that once a week same time as I do the sheets, it doesn't go in the dryer but it dries super fast.
My recommendation?
If you can afford it, buy some high thread count cotton sheets. Have a quick shower at the end of the day and get into a bed with fresh sheets. There's not much like that feeling.
Also, get both a fitted mattress cover and a top sheet, the top sheet goes over you and the duvet or quilt sits above it. It means you can wash the sheets more often than the duvet covers (which can be more of a pain to wash).
Good on you for redefining your life. I learned that each year in college I could redefine who I was to myself, at the start of each year I decided how I wanted to approach the year and what I wanted to change. The attitude of re-defining myself helped me be a different person than I was back at home.
My husband has allergies so we do once a week with pillow cases getting changed every few days.
One thing people sometimes miss is that you need mattress and pillow covers to protect the mattress from accumulating too much dust, sweat, etc.
The sheets go on top of the covers and the covers need to be washed every now and again as well, but less frequently than the sheets.
So I used to have matrass covers but since my dust mites allergy started to pop up, this was the worst thing. I couldn't sleep so I took it off and I sleep a lot better. Just now the guilt of a new matrass without protection is keeping me up (not really tho lol, I sleep like a baby!).
I usually wash them every week but sometimes I stretch it to 2 weeks. I shower at night so that makes it justifiable in my mind, lol.
In your case I would suggest going ahead and getting in the habit of washing them weekly from the getgo.
I don't wash my bedsheets as often as I probably should. I usually go like 3-4 weeks before I even think about it, unless something gross happens. One time I spilled ramen on them while watching Netflix in bed and that was the push I needed. I always mean to wash them every week, but life gets in the way and suddenly it's been a month. I've got a friend who changes theirs every 3 days and I honestly don't get how they keep up.
Do you really wash them often? Also how often you do it, and if anyone has tips for not letting it pile up. Might need to start setting reminder or something.
How you keep up is you have more than one set of sheets. Swap the sheets and immediately wash them so you always have a clean set.
I prefer changing the sheets when I pull them out of the dryer as a prompt to change the sheets after I do laundry so I don't put it off.
Definitely have at least two sets.
My life improved so much when I could finally afford to own multiple sets of sheets. I’m not even exaggerating.
Changing my sheets used to be a big, daunting task. It’s such a terrible feeling to be mentally and physically exhausted and go to fall into bed, only to realize your sheets are still in the dryer and you need to go get them and make the bed before you can rest. It’s an even worse feeling to put off changing your sheets because you’ve got to work an extra shift or something and literally don’t have time and/or executive function to get them washed and put back on.
A second set of sheets solves all this.
Now imagine if you don't have a drier! In my country is typical to own at least 3 sets, because we hang them to dry.
Yep, 3 sheet sets. One clean, one dirty, one on the bed. Then if disaster strikes in the middle of the night you know you have a backup.
I wash weekly, have at least two sets per season (we use flannel in winter), and never eat in bed.
.
I have dogs, so washing the duvet cover every two weeks is a minimum. It could be more frequent, depending.
I use a top sheet underneath my duvet, so I wash the top sheet and fitted sheet + pillow cases every week, and the duvet cover every other week.
I'm weekly as well, but I'm chaotic. I switch back and forth from Monday or Friday. That means I wash early or later on some weeks. 🤷♀️ I'm not practical enough to be a Sunday or Saturday sheet washing person. 😭
I was reading these comments thinking omg I didn't realize I was such a dirtbag. A lot of people washing pillow cases every couple days and sheets once a week. I have a cleaning lady that comes every 4 weeks and changes them all. If they feel sandy or dirty for some reason I might change them before, but I go to bed clean and all I'm doing is sleeping on them. I had no idea so much sheet washing was going on lol
My duvets are feather filled, from Ikea. I wash them in the washing machine with liquid detergent, hang them on the outdoor washing line until they’re mostly dry, then finish them off in the dryer with a load of tennis balls.
Also, when putting clean sheets away, fold all the sheets and pillow cases for the set, but leave one pillow case aside. Once everything’s folded, slide it all into the pillow cases you set aside. This helps me keep a full set of sheets together, which makes it easier to just grab and go!
How often do you tend to clean your bed sheets? I've heard everything from once a week to once a month, but what is your routine?
Sunday morning for me too! And make sure I have my shower that evening because being and smelling clean in clean sheets is the best!
Sheets are once per week in the winter and twice per week in the summer. I change pillowcases every other day.
Humans are disgusting. We sweat a lot and our sheets absorb it all.
I also have protective covers on my pillows and mattress.
This might sound nuts, but sometimes, I will even iron my pillowcases. It feels like sleeping in a fancy hotel!
Every Friday so that the bed smells best for the weekend when I have slightly more time to wallow in it.
Same. Change them everything Sunday. However, I have multiple sets and wash them when it’s convenient.
Me, too. 5 sets. The other 4 get washed when #5 gets put on.
Every 2 weeks but have a strict only pajama rule in bed.
...same, and shower every night. PJs and towels are washed weekly.
Showering before bed is the only reason I change sheets every other week. If I was sleeping dirty, it'd be more often.
Once a week, usually on a weekend.
General rule, once a week is best but once a fortnight is okay too.
Showering before bed will help keep them fresh.
We are forbiden to be in bed without washing / with clothes that have been outside
Same! I change every single time I come home from somewhere into home clothes, and don't even sit anywhere on dining chairs or sofa with outside clothes. My home is shoes free indoor. I have a cover on my sofa though for guests who visit.
My bedsheet and duvet dover always end up with random clothing items stuck in a ball and tangled inside, and when I unknot everything and put them in the dryer, I end up with smelly sheets :(
Do I put the bedsheet and duvet cover individually in the washing machine?
Yeah wash them things by themselves, they'll never behave with other items in the wash. Tip: grab a backup set of sheets so that when you're jammed with laundry but need clean sheets, you can just swap em out and get to the washing later.
Bed linen gets washed separately to clothing. Problem solved.
I just thought of something and (hopefully I remember) - The next time I wash my sheets, I'm going to try it out. I'm going to put my fitted sheet in a large pillow case and pin the opening. Cuz yeah, I'm sick of these damn fitted sheets hiding other laundry and then the whole thing balls up and gets twisted (after washing AND during drying) no matter if it's just bedding in there.. and then nothing dries properly and takes way longer. And if that works, I'm going to get some Velcro and seal the top of a pillow case just for fitted sheets. I'll probably do it this weekend, so if anyone wants me to let them know how it works out, just let me know. Otherwise I won't waste my time trying to find this posting. 😁
I was always told to wash bedding separately so that it has space. Also pull the blanket out halfway through drying untangle it and put it back in so that it dries all the way through instead of leaving wet spots that get musty.
I wash the bed sheets separately from the duvet cover. I use 3 wool dryer balls while tumble drying the sheets. Midway through the drying time, I usually pull the fitted sheet out and untangle it. A lot of times the pillow cases get stuck in the corners of the fitted sheet during the tumble dry. I have king size sheets - flat, fitted and 4 king size pillow cases that I wash together.
Apparently bed sheets and blankets should be washed every 2 weeks at the maximum, but I can't even make myself brush my teeth twice a day (I do brush my teeth every morning though, so they are getting brushed daily). How do people have the energy and motivation to take apart their whole bed, clean all the blankets and sheets, put on some sheets while the other ones are getting cleaned, then put the sheets back on on a once a week to once every 2 weeks basis!? If anybody has any tips, I would love to hear them. I don't even want to admit how long its been since the last time I changed/washed my sheets. I know its gross but I'm just trying to exist and thats already tiring enough.
make it easy on yourself - one sheet on the bottom, one or two blankets on top - all other stuff is nonsense.
My theory about bed linen is this: the problem is, we only notice it when we get into bed. Which is exactly when we are most tired and not wanting to deal with laundry. So, we jump into bed thinking "really need to change the sheets". Then, in the morning, there's a ton of other stuff to do, and no time for the bed.
I have two ideas for solutions. Here's what I think would be best. Have a weekly schedule of housework jobs, so that Saturday at 0900 is always the time to change the bed. Follow the schedule no matter what, unless there's a life threatening emergency.
And here's what I actually do, because I can't seem to maintain any schedule for very long. Get up one morning, decide the bed is starting to get nasty, and take 1 minute to strip it. Forget about the bed 3 minutes later. At 2330 that night, realize the bed is still 'naked', swear a bit, but put fresh linen on because I need someplace to sleep.
Usually I do all the necessary tasks at night (I always do my laundry every Saturday between 9:30PM and 12:30AM), which I a problem due to needing my bedding at night. However, I think this post gave me the random motivation I needed because I stripped my bed at about 10PM, did a load of laundry that took 45 minutes, hung them up, did a load with (almost) all my blankets and sheets that took about 1 hour and hung those up. Then of course i just kept my weighted blanket and threw a sheet on my bed to go to sleep with.
Moral of the story, if you are having trouble getting a task done, just make a post about it and then boom, the brain gets angry you're calling it out.
Whenever I do it I make sure to write it down that I had washed mine and do it within a few months Whenever I'm off work because it's overwhelming and overstimulating all at once for me.
News to me.. maybe wash them once every 3 months or so. Who the hell has that kind of money for laundry?
No idea, I do it every couple of months at most
Can someone help me understand how to wash (king if it matters) bed sheets and duvet covers in a top load washer? I kinda lay them in a loose and fluffy spiral in the machine by themseleves, slowly add the liquid in with the running water to disperse it evenly, then let the machine do its job.
What I run into are sheets that quickly collapse on themselves with the water and don't properly get agitated by the machine. The inner layers of the new ring of wet fabric are sealed off from actual cleaning. The result is a bed sheet that has partial stains, and probably dirt, untouched and left behind.
What can I change here? Just go in throughout the cycle and readjust the sheets?
I throw them in, pour some detergent on right from the bottle (I don't measure), and then turn it on a regular cycle with cold water. I've never had an issue.
If they don’t seem to be getting agitated, is there something wrong with your central agitator piece? Is it not vigorously rotating back-and-forth? And are you not putting enough water in or have too many other things? So that things get bunched up like a rope and then don’t get opened enough for the inside folds to get agitated and made clean?
And maybe you need to soak them longer without agitating while they’re still fairly loose and the detergent has a chance to penetrate ?
I would think you could actually fill the basin right up with detergent in it. Go right to the top then turn off the washer. Put in all your sheets and whatever configuration you want. Try to push him down and make sure all the air is out so they get a good soaking. And why not also use oxygen based stain in order remover at the same time.
Let them soak for a minimum of an hour, and if you’re really concerned, you can leave it for many many hours. The oxygen based stain removers work best on stains when they can be left for as much as 24 hours. Obviously very dark colors you may want to test in advance for colorfastness.
But let them soak fully saturated, and then turn it on the normal cycle
Put the soap in first! Let it mix with the water, until you have about 2” in the tub, then add the sheets evenly distributed around the agitator.
Switch to cotton sheets?
They are 100% cotton
With a recent top loader with an agitator (not all models have them), I make a loose pile of sheet on one side, and a loose pile of duver cover on the other, each kind of C-shaped. No need to pre-tangle by spiraling them. Liquid detergent goes in the dispenser.
I think this is the key. I am pre-tangling them.
Please help. I’m trying to remove sweat stains and overall dingy color of my fairly new white sheets. They’re a good set and want to extend their use.
I would skip all the suggestions to use sodium carbonate—it’s not going to give you the results you want and will likely leave the fabric feeling stiff.
What I recommend instead is getting a box of Tide with Bleach and following the directions below. It’ll take care of this issue and help restore anything else you want to bring back to white. Keep it on hand and use it for all your white laundry.
My suggestion is to soak your dirty whites and garments in very hot water with a strong detergent and an oxygen bleach. In your case, use a full heaping scoop of detergent, the hottest water possible, and soak everything overnight in the bathtub. In the morning, drain the water, wring out the sheets, and wash them as usual. Be sure to run an extra rinse—or manually run an additional rinse and spin cycle.
______________________________________________________________________________
Start by gathering your dirty whites, socks, and linens and setting them aside. Grab a small bucket. Add half a scoop of Tide with Bleach Powder, then fill the bucket with the hottest water possible. Give the mixture a good stir to make sure the detergent dissolves fully. Then, just toss in the clothes to soak overnight. Stir slightly with a cooking spoon or spatula. You want at soak for at least six hours. The oxygen bleach will work its magic, lifting dirt and stains without harming the fabric.
The next morning, pour out the dirty water and drain the clothes. After that, throw the wet clothes straight into your washing machine along with the rest of your white laundry. Set your machine to the hot water cycle and, if possible, choose the heavy soil option for a deeper clean. Use Tide with Bleach again for this wash.
For an extra boost, run hot water from a nearby sink before starting the wash. This will flush out any cold water in the line, ensuring your washer fills with the hottest water possible.
Trust me, follow these steps, and you’ll be amazed. I have not had one person come back and tell me otherwise.

I don’t think powdered tide with bleach is available in Canada anymore. Can you suggest an alternative? I have dingy sheets that drive me crazy!
I can't seem to access the Wal-Mart Canada website, but could you check there. Also, if you have a Costco Membership - or know someone who does, you could order it from their business center.
If it's sweat/body oil stains a small amount of dish soap rubbed into the areas before tossing in the wash works very well.
Thank you, I may try one method on each sheet.
Biz powder/ tide with bleach/ dirty labs booster-
Biz contains lipase enzyme - breaks down lipids from sebum and protease to break down proteins from skin flakes Tide contains activated oxygen bleach + protease Dirty labs - oxy bleach+ phosphodiestrase which breaks down phosphodiester bonda from body grime

I love Biz and always have. My Granny always used it in place of bleach. Good stuff. My local Dollar General has small bags of it for $1.
Very informative, thank you.
Was in hot water and buy oxo clean white revive and soak in hot water while you wait ( 4-6 hours) then wash like normal
Thanks!
I looked at british powders: the closest are - waitrose non bio powder(15-30% oxy bleach+ taed) or aldi almat powder bio (15-30% + taed) (they usually use 20% sodium percarbonate)
Let them soak for a long time, like 24 hours or more
I wash my sheets once a week and my duvet once a month. Pillow cases should always be washed weekly or every 3 days if you have acne/oil issues.
That sounds ideal! Is it very tedious? I climb stairs to a building laundry unit and pay about $5 CAD for a wash and dry.
It's not bad for pricing I suppose, but it's the time and energy for me as well.
I guarantee I should be changing put my sheets more often than I do.
Barring unwanted mess every two weeks
Weekly
Once a year, whether they need it or not.
Hahaha you're my favorite
how to wash bed sheets
Here are some key considerations for washing bed sheets:
Check Care Labels: Always read the care labels on your sheets for specific washing instructions, including temperature and drying recommendations.
Frequency: Wash your sheets every 1-2 weeks to maintain cleanliness and hygiene. If you sweat a lot or have allergies, consider washing them weekly.
Sorting: Wash sheets separately from towels and other laundry to prevent lint transfer and ensure they wash evenly.
Water Temperature: Use warm water for most sheets, as it helps remove dirt and allergens. However, for cotton sheets, hot water can be used occasionally for a deeper clean.
Detergent: Use a mild detergent to avoid skin irritation. Avoid using too much detergent, as it can leave residue on the fabric.
Drying: Tumble dry on low heat to prevent shrinking. If possible, hang sheets to dry in the sun, which can help kill bacteria and freshen them up.
Ironing (Optional): If you prefer crisp sheets, you can iron them on a low setting, but this is not necessary for most people.
Takeaway: Regularly washing your bed sheets with the right temperature and detergent will help keep them fresh and extend their lifespan. Consider investing in a second set of sheets so you can easily rotate them while one set is being washed.
