How to Remove Stains from Pillows

TL;DR

  • Wash pillows with a combination of dish soap, baking soda, borax, and detergent [2:1].
  • Use hydrogen peroxide for stubborn stains [5:1].

Washing and Cleaning Solutions

For removing yellow stains from pillows, a common method involves washing them with a mixture of Dawn dish soap, baking soda, borax, and detergent. This combination can help lift the stains effectively [2:1]. Some users recommend washing pillows in hot water with bleach every six months to maintain their whiteness [2:2]. It's important to thoroughly dry pillows on a high heat setting to prevent mold growth.

Hydrogen Peroxide for Stubborn Stains

Hydrogen peroxide is a powerful stain remover that can be used on various types of stains, including those on reusable pads and potentially pillows. Applying hydrogen peroxide directly to the stained area and letting it sit for 5-10 minutes before washing can help remove stubborn stains [5:1][5:3]. This method is particularly effective for fresh stains.

Alternative Cleaning Products

For couch pillows or other fabric items that cannot be washed easily, products like Hertel from the dollar store have been recommended. Hertel is known for its ability to remove tough stains without leaving residue [3:2]. It can be applied directly to the stain, worked into a lather with a damp cloth, and then scrubbed out with a fresh damp cloth.

Preventive Measures

To prevent future staining, consider using pillow encasements or covers that can be washed regularly [2:4]. Regular maintenance and cleaning of pillows can help reduce the buildup of oils and other substances that cause stains. Additionally, using protective measures such as more pillows to keep hair oils from rubbing on surfaces can help prevent stains on headboards [1:2].

Hi! We have a beautiful table top that I’ve converted to a headboard and we’ve noticed oil marks in the centre, I’m guessing from our pillows. How can I safely remove these marks, and what can I do to avoid it happening again? Thanks!

More likely hair oils ... washing with a solvent like mineral spirits or a kitchen cabinet degreaser might work. Be aware that the oils might have started degrading the finish.

Prevention? That's harder. More pillows, so one is always keeping your hair from rubbing on the headboard would work.

3 steps:

  1. Remove by sanding.

  2. Protect by sealing.

  3. Prevent by washing those filthy pillows more often.

Ok now an actual response: Try scrubbing it with soap and see how much of that discoloration is just surface buildup of body oils.

If the body oils have worked into the finish excessively, polyurethane or a two-part conversion varnish is a good choice for preventing/slowing this happening again in the future, as the polymerized surface will better resist body oils getting worked into the surface compared to hardening oils or shellac.

Title says it all but, I also would like to ask if its okay to wash pillows/get them wet? I searched the internet how to remove yellow stains but my mom doesn't want it to get wet because it would ruin the "softness" of the pillow?

You can wash your pillows.. I use dawn dish soap, baking soda and borax to soak first before washing with the same ingredients + detergent for yellow stains. Then wash with borax/oxyclean afterwards to maintain the white

Need help cleaning these stains off my couch pillows

Posted by speedycat2014 · in r/CleaningTips · 2 years ago
post image

Really hoping someone can help me out. Last night I sat down with some gyoza and a dipping sauce made with soy sauce, sesame oil, chili crisp and gochujang chili paste. Lots of red, oily stuff.

Naturally, I slipped when sitting down and the sauce went EVERYWHERE, all over the couch cushions and my lap.

I took the couch cushion covers off and washed them, along with my pajamas, using some OxiClean and detergent and they came out great. But I have these stained pillows that I can't throw in the washer (that I know of).

I've scrubbed them with a wet cloth and Simple Green. Also tried some Resolve foaming carpet cleaner on the lighter cushion. The stains won't budge.

What else could I try to get these stains out? Any suggestions or advice are welcome. I'm all scrubbed out at the moment but ready to give it another go shortly. Thank you.

I use a product from the dollar store called hertel, it takes out everything, in my experience . Bonus it smells amazing and is suposedly all natural . What i have done is just spay it directly to the spot, Used a heavly damp cloth to work it in to a lather and let soak for a wee bit like just a moment then dab n srub's it out with fresh damp cloth then. Left it in the sun to dry . Came right out didn't leave any residue at all . I wish I had taken before and after pics it was pretty amazing .

2 upvotes on reddit
speedycat2014 · OP · 2 years ago

Alas we only have a Dollar Tree nearby and they did not have Hertel. I did pick up some Fabuloso, a spray bottle to dilute it and a brush and I've scrubbed the pillows and put them out in the sun. The brush may have messed up the nap on them, but at this point they're ruined if I don't try to clean them anyway.

Also, I never knew how many cleaning products I could get so cheaply at a dollar store, so thank you for recommending it. It was my first time shopping at that type of place. 👍

Any idea how to remove these carpet stains?

2 pink stains on almost new carpet, caused by hydralyte icy poles (ingredients in photo). Have tried the two stain remover products attached, but both haven’t lifted even in the slightest.

I did also use my carpet cleaner almost immediately and they didn’t lift at all then either. However did come up straight away from our couch without a stain remover.

Is there any hope for the carpet?

Thank you in advance!

Hydrogen peroxide

why-bother1775 · 7 days ago

You could try seltzer or soda water. It has to be unflavored and unsweetened. It has to be fresh out of the bottle. I keep the little bar bottles on hand for just such uses. Pour a little on a small spot and blot up with 100 percent cotton white towels. If you see any color coming onto the towel then continue wetting and blotting until you don’t see any color coming up onto the towel. If no color is left on the rug great, let it dry and move on to the next spot. This works with red wine and red or purple colored liquids and even blood. Pretty fresh blood that I remember.

You might try calling the maker of the crystals and asking them how to remove the stains. They might know.

You might also contact the carpet manufacturer and ask them about removing the stain.

If neither of those aren’t any help, I’d try applying ice next to see if the color is some kind of plastic and see if the ice will harden the color and allow you to scrape it off.

After you have tried cold, then I would try heat. With the carpet still moist, use the same type of towel and an iron on a low setting, very low and gradually increase the heat to below the level where you melt the carpet. Melt is what you have to worry about with synthetic materials and carpets are usually made of synthetic materials.

Hope that helps!

Best way to remove stains from reusable pads?

Posted by hackedoffhack · in r/Periods · 3 years ago

I run cold water over them as soon as I took them off and then soaked them for a bit but the stain still showed up post washing machine. I’m not too bothered as I know they are clean but I think they will start to look rank pretty quickly. I read on one thread here that dish soap works. Any other suggestions?

I do an oxiclean soak over night with a little bit of detergent. I use persil. I have to use a bucket for my soak but basically you would dissolve the oxiclean in hot water and then add cold water and mix.. once the water is cold add all your pads. In the morning asses if you need to do another soak. The oxiclean is only active for so many hours.. by the second soak you may still see some staining but whatever’s left the washer takes out at that point. I do a quick wash with my pads alone.. and then bulk the load with my normal clothes and wash again. Doing this I have no stains. I recommend using persil or tide as that really helps as well as they have a lot of enzymes

Hydrogen peroxide!!!! It works wonders. Let it soak in hydrogen peroxide and then wash it. I’m not sure if it will work for it already being stained but if it’s fresh hydrogen peroxide and then a little bit of soap will take it away :)

I feel like the half of these that say "soak with water and laundry detergent" can be removed.

If your advice is to use the most common laundry products on your stains, then it really isn't "advice," it is just confirmation that no one else knows how to treat the stain better than just washing your clothes normally.

Another way is washing the clothing with detergent like normal, the stain will turn dark red/maroonish colour, then air dry the cloth in direct sunlight. The maroon colour just goes away like magic.

You can always try and just throw it in the washer tonight on hot. But once you put it in the dryer there’s a good chance any leftover stain will be set. Or if you have white distilled vinegar you can try using that instead of Shout or Resolve. Sorry bud…beardie poop sucks. 😕

Take it off your bed. If you can’t soak it in hot water, rinse it off good in the bathroom sink and leave it till the morning. Sleep on top of a blanket or something. Or just sleep on your bare mattress. It’s really not that big of a deal.

For anyone wondering about red wine on a carpet as you can’t wash it, this method worked for me:

  • 1 tbs dish soap (Dawn is what I used)
  • 1 tbs white vinegar
  • 2 cups warm water

Pour bit by bit over the stain and blot to get the stain out. The guide recommended a white cloth to prevent transfer of pigment but I used a yellow microfibre cloth as that’s all I had, and didn’t notice any pigment transfer. The stain isn’t even visible anymore on my carpet!

how to remove stains from pillows

Here are some effective methods to remove stains from pillows:

  1. Identify the Stain Type:

    • Oil-based stains: Use dish soap or laundry detergent.
    • Protein stains (like sweat or blood): Use cold water and a gentle detergent.
    • Dye stains (like ink): Use rubbing alcohol or a stain remover.
  2. Pre-Treat the Stain:

    • Apply a small amount of your chosen stain remover directly to the stain.
    • Let it sit for about 15-30 minutes to penetrate the fabric.
  3. Washing Instructions:

    • Machine Wash: Check the care label. Most pillows can be washed in a machine on a gentle cycle with warm water.
    • Hand Wash: For delicate fabrics, soak the pillow in a bathtub or large basin with warm water and a mild detergent.
  4. Drying:

    • Air Dry: Lay the pillow flat on a clean surface to dry completely. This helps maintain its shape.
    • Tumble Dry: If the care label allows, tumble dry on low heat with dryer balls or clean tennis balls to fluff the pillow.
  5. Additional Tips:

    • Always check the care label before washing.
    • For stubborn stains, repeat the pre-treatment and washing process.
    • Consider using a pillow protector to prevent future stains.

Recommendation: For regular maintenance, wash your pillows every 3-6 months and use pillow protectors to minimize staining. This will help prolong their lifespan and keep them fresh.
