What Redditors are Saying

How to Create a Productive Workspace

TL;DR Focus on ergonomic furniture, clear separation of work and relaxation areas, good lighting, and personal touches to create a workspace that enhances productivity and comfort.

Ergonomic Furniture

Investing in ergonomic furniture is crucial for maintaining comfort and preventing physical strain during long work hours. Many users recommend a good chair with lumbar support to avoid back pain [1:1][1:9]. Adjustable desks, particularly sit-stand desks, are also popular as they allow you to change positions throughout the day and maintain proper desk height [1:2].

Work Zone Designation

Creating a designated work zone can help mentally separate work from relaxation time, which is important for maintaining focus and avoiding burnout [1:1][1:3]. This can be achieved by setting up your workspace in a specific area of your home and keeping it organized and free from distractions. Some users suggest changing into work clothes to further reinforce this mental separation [2:1].

Lighting and Ambiance

Good lighting is essential for a productive workspace. Users have found that using lamps with adjustable hue settings can influence productivity, with white light being more effective than yellowish hues [2:2]. Natural light and fresh air can also contribute to a pleasant work environment, making it more inviting and comfortable [4:1].

Personal Touches and Comfort

Adding personal touches such as plants, rugs, or even fresh flowers can make your workspace more inviting and comfortable [1:2][4:1]. Noise-canceling headphones can help minimize distractions and keep you focused [1:4]. Keeping your workspace clean and tidy is also important for creating a productive atmosphere [4:1].

Productivity Tools and Habits

Incorporating productivity tools and habits can enhance efficiency and focus. Some users recommend using project management tools to organize tasks and track progress [5:1]. Taking regular breaks, such as every 90 minutes, can help maintain energy levels and prevent burnout [1:5]. Additionally, logging daily accomplishments can build momentum and keep you motivated [1:4].

How do you make your home office more comfortable and productive?

ORIGINAL POST

I’ve been working from home for a while now, and while it's great in some ways, I feel like my home office could use a serious upgrade for both comfort and productivity. I’ve read a lot about creating a healthy workspace, like having the right chair, lighting, and making sure I get up and move around, but honestly, I’m struggling to put it all together.

What’s your go-to tip for setting up a healthy, efficient home office? Do you have any must-have items that keep you comfortable for long hours? Or any habits you swear by to stay focused and avoid burnout? I'd love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

A really comfy swirly office chair with a nice design that I like, a large sit stand office table, a table lamp with good lighting and some micro curtains to separate spaces/block some light providing a protected nook feel. And some plants. And defs next to a large window preferably facing nature. Oh and a foot rest for when I want to put up my feet along with a small soft carpet especially for those cold winters.

I keep my setup simple but functional. A good chair with lumbar support, a proper desk height, and a laptop stand to bring my screen to eye level, these are the essentials. I also take breaks by doing stretches or a quick walk around the block. Having a designated ‘work zone’ helps me mentally separate work from relaxation.

The designated work zone is such a great idea! I can see how that would mentally separate work from relaxation time. But how often do you take breaks to stay energized during the day?

I usually take breaks around every 90 minutes. But you can change the time interval depending on your work stress and personal preferences or needs.

I have a few different soft light sources that make my home office cozy. Also a rug made a big difference. To stay focused, noise canceling headphones and a daily log of the work I’ve done. The list helps me build momentum and stay focused on adding to the list of things I’ve completed.

Noise-canceling headphones are a game changer! I’ve been considering getting some. The daily log idea is also genius for building momentum and staying on track. How often do you update your work log throughout the day, btw?

I swapped my old chair for an ergonomic one, and it’s made a huge difference. No more back pain!

Back pain is such a hassle. Do you have any recommendations for ergonomic chairs that worked well for you, or should I just go with a popular brand?

Tips on creating a productive work environment at home?

Posted by Smooth-Trainer3940 · in r/workfromhome · 3 years ago

Started working remotely this spring, and I am struggling a little bit to create a work environment that helps me be productive. I've thought about going out in public to work, but I haven't tried it yet. What are ways to make your home workspace more like a professional/office workspace?

My lamp has different hue settings, and I noticed that using a white hue makes me more productive than the cozy yellowish hue I'd normally choose.

Create a logical separation of work and home.

I personally vouch these

  1. Change into work clothes before you start and changing into comfy home clothes after you end.
  2. I also have a pc battlestation (dinner table), a large monitor that can switch video input, a keyboard that can switch inputs too. To get into work mode, I open the laptop on the side and switch my monitor and keyboard into work (hurrah bluetooth).
Basically, by physically switching (monitor, keyboard, laptop) into work mode, I also mentally switch into work and at the end of the day it's easier to switch out.

Creating your personal workspace can be the difference between procrastinating and being productive. Photos below.

I personally focus on optimizing human well-being and overall system performance between people and their personal environment. So this was a personal journey for me during the pandemic when I had to switch from my outdoor workbench to a dresser where I hit my knees against the drawer with every move.

I started to dream of an office, a creative workspace from where I could do everything digitally. I work from home due to physical challenges, but I can still connect with the whole world. And now I'm also sharing my findings on what is important to find the right balance between budget, quality and efficiency.

Ready for work.

Ready for work, research and entertainment.

Set up from the left corner. The Desk is a adjustable desk standing in the Feng Shui power position facing the entrance door and with the wall behind my back.

For me, having a clean space is a must if I want to actually feel productive and out together. I tidy things up, let in natural light, fresh air if the weather is nice, light a candle, and get the supplies I’ll need ahead of time for whatever I might be working on. I usually have fresh flowers to decorate my workspace, which helps with the fresh & clean vibes, and ambiance :)

Tips on creating a productive work environment?

Posted by Smooth-Trainer3940 · in r/productivity · 3 years ago

I don't have THE most productive work environment. I try to limit distractions and find a comfortable place to work. I need some suggestions, though. What did you do to create a work environment that helps you be productive? Did you create the environment or do you find it easier to go places in public to find them? Looking to see how I can improve my own work environment to make it better for working from home. Looking forward to hearing some tips! Thanks!

I am trying to make "study" or work dates with friends where we both do our thing at a cafe, or each others place, together. It doesnt always work but I give it a few tries and see if we can get past just being excited to talk and keep the work flow going. Trying with a couple friends, see which one sticks and it becomes semi regular

Literally none of these tips are about changing your workspace in any way.

I was hoping for some research based tips on improving a home office -- stuff like getting a second monitor, or adding houseplants, or getting a whiteboard -- stuff that actually enhances productivity.

Instead, I got a list of lame exercises and attitude adjustment crap.

> adding houseplants

Adding houseplants? We have about one- to one-fifty houseplants lusciousing up every window in the house, but just a few in the office. Used to have more, but the cats knocked over a couple (because cat), so we keep the desktops and tables clear.

What's the theory/concept behind adding plants to boost productivity? A nice rationale to bring plants back into the office would be a boon.

They help oxygenate the air in the room, which is supposed to keep your brain sharper for longer. Several studies have also seen a link between exposure to plants and general sense of well being.

Your Ultimate Guide to a Productive Home Study Space 🏡✨

Posted by Nejib-Erbreiders · in r/Writing_Guide · 1 month ago

Hey everyone! With many of us studying or working from home, having a dedicated and organized space is more important than ever. A well-designed study area can seriously boost your focus and productivity. I've spent a lot of time perfecting my setup, and I wanted to share some tips that have made a huge difference for me.

1. Choose the Right Location 📍

  • Find a quiet corner. This is key. Try to avoid high-traffic areas like the living room or kitchen. A spare bedroom or a quiet corner in your office is ideal.
  • Maximize natural light. Set up your desk near a window if possible. Natural light reduces eye strain and can improve your mood and energy levels.
  • Face a wall. Some people find it less distracting to face a wall rather than a window or the door. If you find yourself getting distracted by what's happening outside or in your home, try this!

2. Declutter and Organize 🧹

  • Start fresh. Before you do anything else, clear everything off your desk. Throw away any trash and put things away that don't belong there.
  • Use vertical space. Wall shelves, pegboards, and even a small bookshelf can help you store books, notebooks, and supplies without taking up valuable desk space.
  • Get some desk organizers. Use trays, cup holders, or small drawers to keep pens, highlighters, and sticky notes in one place. A tidy desk leads to a tidy mind!
  • Tame those cables. Use cable ties or clips to manage your laptop and monitor cables. A neat workspace looks professional and helps you feel more in control.

3. Invest in Comfort and Ergonomics 🧘‍♀️

  • Get a good chair. This is non-negotiable. Your back will thank you! Look for a chair with good lumbar support that allows your feet to be flat on the floor.
  • Adjust your monitor height. Your screen should be at eye level. Use a monitor stand or a stack of books to raise it if needed. This prevents neck strain.
  • Proper lighting. If natural light isn't enough, get a good desk lamp. A lamp with adjustable brightness is a great choice.

4. Personalize It 🎨

  • Add some green. A small plant can do wonders for your space. Plants like a snake plant or a pothos are easy to care for and can even improve air quality.
  • Put up some art or photos. Personal touches can make your space feel more inviting and less sterile. A few photos or a motivational poster can keep you inspired.
  • Create a vibe. A small speaker for some ambient music or a scented candle can help you set the mood for a productive session.

I hope these tips help you create a study space you love. What are your must-haves for a productive desk setup? Share your tips below! 👇

Productivity Tips for Workspace?

Posted by joyfulgrace2022 · in r/gsuite · 3 years ago

I will be going back to work from a 3 month maternity leave and will be stepping in to a 2nd in command position within the company. I need a better way of organizing projects, tasks, calendar, managing people and reminders to check in with them on their projects, I need an easy way to be organized and stay on top of things. I tried using a Zig Ziglar performance planner but I am not a paper person. I want to be able to access everything on my iPhone or at least my iPad. I’d like to utilize google workspace as much as I can since our business pays for it. I’ve been using google calendar, drive, docs, sheets for 2 years but it’s not organized whatsoever and I know I’m missing most likely some basic productivity tips and tricks.

So I guess what I’m asking is, what are your favorite ways to use google workspace to be productive?

A few favs on Workspace that are definitely worth taking a look at:

  1. Spaces (previously rooms). You can create one from your inbox, just under where your chat is located.
  2. Optimizing the use of GChat for sharing docs and launching Google Meet
  3. Utilizing GCal's native appointment scheduling blocks. (Move over Calendly)
  4. Setting up sheets or using docs' new checklist function, along with tagging team members (@theirname) for basic project management.
  5. And of course: Google Tasks or Google Keep for personal tasks and notes

If you're looking for some complex project management, Trello, Asana, or Notion will be better suited. For basic tasks, due dates, and checkins, Workspace definitely has the tools natively within Spaces or by setting up a Doc/Sheet for team tasks.

There's always more...but these are a few of my favs as of late.

how to create a productive workspace

Key Considerations for Creating a Productive Workspace

  1. Ergonomics: Invest in a comfortable chair and desk that promote good posture. Consider a sit-stand desk to alternate between sitting and standing.

  2. Lighting: Ensure your workspace has adequate lighting. Natural light is ideal, but if that's not possible, use bright, adjustable lamps to reduce eye strain.

  3. Organization: Keep your workspace tidy and organized. Use storage solutions like shelves, drawers, and organizers to minimize clutter and make essential items easily accessible.

  4. Technology: Equip your workspace with reliable technology. Ensure your computer, internet connection, and any necessary software are up to date to avoid disruptions.

  5. Personalization: Add personal touches like plants, artwork, or photos to make the space feel inviting and inspiring, which can boost your mood and motivation.

  6. Minimize Distractions: Identify and eliminate distractions. This could mean using noise-canceling headphones, setting boundaries with others, or using apps to block distracting websites.

  7. Define Boundaries: If working from home, establish clear boundaries between work and personal time. This can help maintain focus during work hours and promote work-life balance.

Takeaway: A productive workspace is tailored to your needs and preferences. Regularly assess and adjust your setup to ensure it remains conducive to your work style. Consider implementing the Pomodoro Technique or time-blocking methods to enhance focus and productivity during your work sessions.
