Creating a WhatsApp group is a straightforward process, but there are some nuances and considerations based on user experiences shared in various discussions. Below are the key steps and insights for setting up a WhatsApp group.
Basic Steps to Create a WhatsApp Group
Challenges with Creating Groups
Managing Group Privacy and Setup
Monetizing and Managing Large Groups
In conclusion, while creating a WhatsApp group is relatively simple, managing contacts and privacy settings can be challenging. Exploring alternative platforms or using third-party tools may provide additional flexibility and control.
Hi all. I'm trying to set up a group on WhatsApp for a future D&D group. I'm on a completely brand new account and likely this is the only thing I'll ever use WhatsApp for.
How exactly do I make an empty group and then configure it all BEFORE I get anybody into it?
Additional info: brand spanking new account.
Don't think you can make a group without inviting at least one person. If you really can't add anyone at all for some reason, you could create a Google Voice account and use that to set up a WhatsApp account, make it a contact, then add that account. Of course you need another device to do it on, OR since you haven't used your account for anything, log out and set up the secondary account, then log out and go back into your primary and invite the secondary to your group so you can set it up.
The way WhatsApp manages contacts is really awful to me. Can't just make a dummy contact because it has to check to see if they're actually registered, and I hate that it scans your phone contacts AND lets anybody else that has your number know that you have WhatsApp and start sending you messages.
Yeah, I'm not letting whatsapp have access to my contacts list. Not for security, it's just so disorganized with coworkers and employers and stuff from decades ago.
WhatsApp can't fully function without access to your contacts. That's where it stores contacts and how it finds other contacts who have WhatsApp accounts. You can start chats using only a number (may require jumping through some hoops), but you will never see a name, you will only ever see it listed as a number, and if the chat is deleted you won't have that number listed as a contact in order to start a new chat so you'll need a list saved elsewhere to remember. And I don't think you can add someone to a group unless they are a saved contact.
It's definitely anti-user in some ways because you can't limit your contact list to the people you WANT to see, nor can you prevent others from knowing you have a WhatsApp account, but it also makes it much easier for people to find each other and use the service between them which is why they do it that way (and probably reduces the programming burden since they don't have to write code for a contacts list).
This might be a dumb question, so apologies for my ignorance.
My program has a huge WhatsApp group for all the students in my year (200+) and we frequently need to make smaller groups for things like projects, study groups etc.
Usually I'm not the one that makes these groups so this is new to me. I would like to add a few people and create a group, but from what I understand, I can only add people to a group if they're saved in my contacts and not from the big group. I've tried on Web and on mobile and I can't seem to find a way to do this.
Is there any way I can do this without adding a bunch of random people to my contacts?
Thanks!
Honestly, I understand that this is not at all the answer you were looking for but I recommend GroupMe exactly for this reason. Some universities have a very robust GroupMe community (in that the majority use it) and others don't. However, GroupMe solves this exact issue.
Thanks for the suggestion. WhatsApp isn't my favourite either but I doubt I can get over 200 people to switch over to a more functional platform.
Heck, we've got people who don't even use WhatsApp and they're young!
If you’re in a group with them then save their numbers and make a separate group with them.
When I go to do this, my phone wants to add them as personal contacts. I don't really want to save them as personal contacts since my list is long. Is this what you mean? Or is it something else?
Such design, many lines, so delightful
All I want to do is start a new group chat with two people I've messaged before. Don't see any option to do it in either iPhone or web. It wants to me to give access to my phone's address book but I'm not going to do that. Can someone help?
Hey you can create whatsapp group without saving contact with https://group.take.app
Disclaimer: I made this
I experienced same issue today Nov. 19,2024. There is no option for new group. I can only create new list but that is not what I want. Last year I could create new group easily. But I figured out a work around. I would like to share with people. If I have new WhatsApp contacts, I have to add them to my phone contacts first one by one. Then click that green + button, enables to access my contacts on iPhone, then the new group option show up . I am able to follow instructions to finish the group creation.
Then I disable WhatsApp to access my phone contacts .
I believe WhatsApp has changed the way to add contact to a group. In general it doesn’t allow add WhatsApp contacts to group. It only allows add from phone contacts. That is not what I wanted! It is not convenient. I use WhatsApp for new friends who may not my close friends, which I don’t want to add them to my phone contacts.
Once you allow access WhatsApp will upload ALL your contacts' information (without their permission) onto the WhatsApp/Facebook servers. Turning off access in the future doesn't undo what's already been sent, the private contact information has been permanently leaked to them. That's why they are so desperate to get users of the app to enable access. It's all about them harvesting information, and they want to make sure they get it.
Isn’t that nice? It’s kind of sneaky too. “Well you could’ve figured this out on your own if you spent hours reading how we do things. But you’re not willing to spend those hours understanding our app, so we’ll just quietly take advantage of you.” Nice.
Jumping in to this just to say it’s lousy you have to give it full access to contacts in order to create a group… all my thumbs down
It might be because it's technically preprogrammed by WhatsApp because it doesn't have its own internal contact list like Telegram.

If you're on iPhone, this is hackish, but better than nothing. Make sure your contacts are sync'd with iCloud, then turn off contacts to delete all contacts from your phone, then grant access to contacts to Whatsapp. From there, you can do the needful.
Once the group is created, quit Whatsapp, revoke access to contact, then turn back on contact sync from iCloud. For extra caution (I really don't want FB to have all my contacts), I have background refresh disabled on my phone, and make sure I close the app on the phone before granting/revoking access.
I have been looking for a way to create a paid subscription to a WhatsApp group. I haven't found any solutions in the market and i am in two minds about building a solution myself. I know how to build the solution but I wanted to check with you guys if there are alternatives that would help me achieve the goal of automating access to WhatsApp groups based on subscription.
Keeping hearing memberspace is good
Actually there is alternative platform you can use. I use chatmatic and manychat to gain more subscribers using m.me link to advertise products or service. I created my own sequence to engage with customer/client needs or even problem they face. There are much more assets can be use to leverage yr business but however i stick to your needs first.
If i ask me is the Whatapp similar with Manychat or Chatmatic? Yes it does but however the platform i use is more clear and systematic whereby you can analyze data through it. Data determine me whether my flow of sequence is good and understand better customer behaviour. From that, i can make some adjustments on my ads or change products so that i can fulfill customer/client needs. Hope this clarify your doubts.
I run a small WhatsApp group where people chat about fitness tips. It’s active, but I have no clue how to turn it into something that actually makes money. I’m worried about ruining the vibe if I just slap a payment link or spam them with ads.
I had a Telegram group that I wanted to monetize but didn’t want to kill the vibe either. I ended up using Nas.io - it let me keep the same group but layered in payments, automated updates, and even some engagement tools. I turned it into a structured challenge instead of just casual chat, and people were actually happier paying because it added more value for them. If you already have an active WhatsApp group, Nas.io makes it pretty simple to upgrade it into something sustainable. Wish you luck!
Thanks , will check it out
Can I join the group?

I created a new WhatsApp group with some friends and it automatically duplicates the group. I only receive messages in one of them but if I try deleting the other group then I end up exiting from the original group also. I have tried restarting my iPhone and uninstalling and reinstalling WhatsApp. I am still seeing 2 groups with the same name and participants. This is extremely annoying. How do I fix this?
Wtf is up with WhatsApp?!! Still facing this problem… what’s the solution?
Same problem here. Also double the participants in each group…
exactly the same issue here. it's really annoying...
Same problem here 🙈
Not sure if I’m too late but I just experienced this and the fix I done was update WhatsApp and created the group and it worked fine didn’t duplicate it.
Should me make one?
We do have one dm 😺
