TL;DR
Testing Methods
Several methods were suggested for determining skin undertones. The vein test, which involves checking the color of your veins, is often mentioned but criticized for its lack of accuracy, especially for olive or deeper skin tones [2:1]. Instead, using foundation swatches directly on your neck is recommended as it provides a more accurate representation of how different undertones appear against your skin
[5:1]. Neutral lighting is crucial when testing, as artificial lighting can skew perception
[1:1].
Professional Help and Resources
Makeup stores like Ulta and Sephora offer assistance in determining undertones, often using specialized tools and trained staff [1:3]. Online resources such as YouTube tutorials by creators like Kackie Reviews can provide insights into color theory and undertones
[2:4]. Additionally, apps and quizzes available online can help guide you through the process
[3:1].
Neutral Undertones
Many users find themselves defaulting to neutral undertones, especially when they don't distinctly fit into warm or cool categories [2:2],
[2:6]. Neutral foundations are often preferred because they balance out various skin tones without emphasizing pink or yellow hues
[2:3]. If you find that you can work with both warm and cool tones across different brands, you might lean towards a neutral undertone
[4].
Personal Preferences and Observations
Personal preferences, such as jewelry choice (silver vs. gold) and how colors look in photos, can also provide clues about your undertone [2:5],
[2:9]. Observing yourself in group photos compared to others can highlight whether your skin appears more pink/peach (cool), yellow/golden (warm), or greenish (olive)
[2:9]. These observations, combined with product swatches, can help refine your understanding of your undertone.
I swear I’m a mix of undertones and don’t fall under one category.... if anyone is good at this please help! Let me know and i can send a picture of my skin if that helps haha
/r/coloranalysis
I think makeup stores like ulta and Sephora help with that
There's various tests, apps, etc you can use. I encourage you to find someplace with neutral lighting, first time I went looking for my undertones I realized my mom preferred "warm" lightbulbs after buying and opening a bunch of stuff.
A lot of makeup is about cool/warm tones and what will look best on you based on your undertone, but I’ve tried lots of the tests and I just can’t tell what I am. Like I have green, blue, and purple veins, my skin looks yellow and pink next to white depending on what part of me is next to it, etc etc and I just gave up and assumed I’m neutral but I truly don’t know, can anyone help?
The warm tone/cool tone, blue vein/green vein thing wears me out. I've heard makeup sales associates tell me my skin tone is warm, and others swear my skin is cool. I always default to neutral.
I have a conspiracy theory that most people are neutral but for some reason most shades are cool or warm. Neutral toned foundations look the best match on me.
I do think I’m slightly cool toned— but I’ve learned I like a neutral undertone because it’s balancing. I prefer my foundation to neutralize the pink instead of making me pinker if that makes sense.
Neutral foundation looks too yellow on some people. Cool undertones definitely a real thing.
Yeah, but I think there more cool and warm shades and not enough neutral ones while most people are just neutral.
Check out Kackie Reviews on YouTube her video on undertone was amazing. She has quite a few videos on color theory. It blows my mind
Hi! Ty for recommending her to me, I watched her video on undertones and I’m still a bit unsure about what I am tbh, I think I’ll have to go swatch different foundations on my skin to know for sure. My skin is very weird haha one second I look yellow and the next I’m pink, it’s all very confusing for me
Ignore the vein test. It doesn't take olive skintones of any temperature into account, nor does it seem to take medium and deeper skintones into consideration, not to mention the fact everyone's veins are colours generally perceived as cool (even though green, blue, and purple all have "warm" variants). It's just not it.
The best advice I've seen is by a makeup artist in the Makeup Addiction sub: ignore what brands say about a foundation or concealer shade's undertone (IMO, their classification sucks anyway, and "undertone" in this case is a misnomer), and simply concentrate on matching your skintone.
No yeah I agree but the reason I want to know my undertone is more for other products like lip products, I’m not sure if I should get more cool toned ones or more warm toned ones for my particular skin tone.
But yeah I agree all these tests only confuse me more cause it’s all subjective, like I prefer silver jewelry so I feel I’m biased when it comes to that etc
Look at yourself in a group photo? Do you look more pink/peach than others? Cool toned. Look more yellow/golden? Warm toned? Look greenish/almost sick lol? Olive . Also ymmv based on the depth of your skin (Ie how fair vs how deep you are), e.g. cool toned melanated skin has more of a red appearance
I don’t think I look like any color in particular though, like I just look.. meh. I don’t look super red/orange/green?? Idk maybe I’m just too pale 😭 is there a way to reply with pictures? I don’t use Reddit much but I feel if I can show people what I look like then they could help with determining my undertone
You’re probably neutral undertone then

I’d say I need more sun ivory. Mine is the same lol
I’d say cool
It’s become too confusing to shop with me not knowing if I’m picking the correct undertone. Sometimes I think im warm but look too yellow. I know I’m definitely not cool but some hints of red look better than yellow ones. Can you help me decide the correct one.
i think the 1 and 3 match the best with your skin
I'd go with 1. Maybe 4.
5 or 6
1 looks good.
I would mix one with a little bit of two.
I mix my foundation daily on the back of my hand. I also have two different primary colors on my face. I’m lighter underneath my eyes and then darker towards the bottom of my face and I see that you have a similar color palette.
Any insight into whether I might be cool, warm, or neutral? I have had the hardest time figuring this out!!
You look neutral to me.
Apologies, I don’t have a confident guess from these pictures, but I will say that it can be a lot easier to narrow down undertone with swatches of foundation and concealer in different tones on your neck (arm isn’t as helpful as people think and faces can often have a bit of redness). Lighting in photos can make people look different undertones, so the frame of reference to specific shades of products can help. I know you can get samples from counters at places like John Lewis, so might be worth trying.
It's not that big a deal. Anyway the most important part to see is your veins.
If your veins are green, you have warm undertones.
If they’re blue or purple, you have cool.
If you have both, you are neutral.
I think you might have a neutral / pink undertone? Usually fair skin has a pinkier undertone:)
Fair neutral and warm are actually a lot more common than you realize. Fair olive is also very much a thing. People assume fair skin usually has pink undertones because we are prone to redness from rosacea or the sun but that doesn’t equal pink undertones.
I blonde and pale and am neutral to yellow. I remember being so frustrated until I went to Sephora with my sister. She color matched me better than anyone.
Thank you for sharing that, I had no idea, I tend to read on Google that perhaps if I have fair skin, I probably have a cool tone, which I wasn't sure about...
Oh and what would be my skin tone then? I forgot to ask that in the title, I thought that was it I forgot I wanted both hahah. Would you have any idea?
Your skin “tone” is fair. To help determine what your undertone is because it’s really hard to tell in this picture do you -
If you still don’t know, go get shade matched in a popular foundation at an Ulta or Sephora.
Your undertone is neutral leaning towards cool but not obviously cool & so in my opinion, you’re neutral cool
It's hard to tell if you just have surface redness, or if you are indeed cool / pink. For instance, I am olive but have surface redness so unfortunately I'm often color matched as cool. Being able to see more of your face, or even your neck and chest, will help with this community's ability to determine your skin tone.
For your reference, cool = pink, warm/golden = yellow.
Check base of neck, temples, above eyebrows, etc. = yup, second fair olive today! You’re a cool olive in my view but could be neutral too (almost impossible to tell without more visuals) 🫒
How can we help you if we can't even see your face?
You definitely look cool toned. A little pinky

I can't really figure out from the veins, but I see warmth on your face....
Thank you! I knowwww its hard to tell from the veins
In second picture your veins do seem greenish (warm undertone)
To me your face seems neutral/yellow but in the last picture you definitely have warmth to your tone
Thank you!!!
i found my undertone in the worst way. when i get sick i turn a sickly green color (my undertone) but when i’m healthy i have tan (non green skin). BUT the easiest way to find your undertone is to hold your face or arm against a white sheet of paper. your skin will essentially “show” the undertone next to pure white.
I’m pinks and reds… I found out by going to the mall and having a professional assess and explain
Would also love to know!
+1
Undertone is the way we organize foundation colors. The range of colors are basically red, pink, peach, neutral, gold, olive, and blue. (None of these categories measure skin lightness or darkness). The differences in all these undertones can be very subtle to the untrained eye. I recommend visiting your local makeup counter and surveying the artists/sales associates. After enough input, you should eventually see a running theme in their answers. After that, you can start experimenting with foundation shades in that category and other makeup products known to compliment that specific undertone. … or you can post a pic to r/BrownBeauty. The gurls in this sub are usually right on the money. Ps- Try to avoid “warm” and “cool,” because whole entire brands be defining those words in opposite ways. It’ll just mix you up, so ignore them lol
Cool to natural

Try color analysis sub
Neutral light, like me. Both silver and gold can look good. I often opt for rose gold :)
Hard to tell. I would definitely try a color analysis thread.
I feel like neutral, but leaning coolish.
I’m thinking you look great in silver, but can also wear gold if you want to.
