Makeup Tips for Warm Skin Tones

Understanding Your Undertone

Determining your undertone is crucial for selecting the right makeup colors. Many people find themselves confused between warm, cool, and neutral tones [5:1]. If you have a warm skin tone, colors like gold, champagne, beiges, and browns will complement your complexion well [5:3]. However, if you're neutral but leaning warm, these shades can still be flattering [5:5].

Foundation and Concealer Choices

Choosing the right foundation is essential for achieving a natural look. For warm skin tones, using a warm-toned liquid foundation can enhance your natural glow [1]. When it comes to concealers, opting for those with peachy undertones can prevent a grey appearance, especially for those with olive skin [2:2].

Blush and Lip Colors

Warm skin tones benefit from blushes with slight warmth, such as peachy or coral shades [2:2]. These colors add a healthy finish without looking too obviously warm. For lips, while warm tones are generally recommended, experimenting with neutral or mauve lipsticks can also work well [2:2].

Eye Makeup Suggestions

For eye makeup, warm skin tones can experiment with earthy shades like browns and golds [5:3]. Adding definition around the eyes with eyeliner can make them appear more awake and vibrant [1:2]. Mascara and curling lashes can further elevate your eye shape [1:4].

Personal Preference and Experimentation

Ultimately, personal preference plays a significant role in makeup choices. While warm tones might suit your skin, some individuals prefer cooler tones due to familiarity [2:1]. It's important to experiment with different colors and see what makes you feel most confident and beautiful [5:7].

Definitely could use some advice 😭 one thing might be that I’m using a warm toned liquid foundation even though I’ve been told I have a neutral (between warm and cool) tone… the concealer around my eyes is probably neutral or cool… Also didn’t have anything on my lips in this picture, but I usually do something in the cool summer color pallete for that… Thanks in advance!

I love your look! The only thing I would personally add is a bit more definition around the eyes with eyeliner. I find that this and whitening eye drops help my eyes and under eyes look way more awake than concealer alone. Just my personal preference tho, you are gorgeous girl!

Mascara to elevate your eye shape and maybe a gloss on the lips

I would curl your lashes & finish the end of brows a little bit higher. And you can add a bit of color with cool toned blush and contour stick

the first four pictures I have a “cooler” makeup. People have told me I’m winter and cool undertone but I somehow prefer warm makeup - like the four last pictures ? I’m confused and need some tips

I think it ultimately comes down to personal preference- I like the first 4 more because I feel I can see your face more clearly, in the last 4 I see the makeup first. I think your primary ‘quality’ is deep, rich colours but I find other than black, a lot of cool toned makeup seems to be frosty and light so it could be a case that it’s easier for you the honour the depth and richness with warm tones because they seem to be so much more easier to find?

6 upvotes on reddit
alejammy · OP · 7 months ago

This is true thanks for your feedback. I’ve also been doing “warm” for longer so it may be more familiar to me. And yes most cool tone western makeup is frosty and pink I find. I’ve been looking into Korean makeup for cooler tones

Unlike a regular cool season, cool olives still have a lack of red in the skin and so often still need some peachiness in their makeup to not look grey, not necessarily in lipstick but often in blush …

Doesn’t need to be very peachy though, just some slight warmth- Mac Melba is my choice and a good example- aiming for a neutral but healthy finish so you’re not leaning too obviously warm and you can still opt for cool or mauve lipsticks if that balances more

Korean makeup also sounds like a great option, love yesstyle for its clearly marked warm and cool versions and affordable enough to test and mix and match, just hate waiting weeks for my orders to come 😝

Yes the pinks can be so tricky on online skin- even on cool summers colouring (if you’re into colour analysis) the baby pinks look a bit off. There’s deffo good cool shades for olive skin but a lot of mainstream western makeup seems to be more cool toned for pinker skin rather than olive skin. Korean makeups deffo a great idea

pharmgirlinfinity · 7 months ago

I have to agree, I like the first 4 photos better too! You are so beautiful in every single one, but the makeup distracts from your stunning features when you use “warm” colors. I am seeing all the warmth and red instead of your eyes and lips. Idk if I would have been able to put my finger on it without the above comment, but it seems to be the case!

2 upvotes on reddit
radsloth2 · 7 months ago

It could also be the warmth of her eye colour. In the first pictures I looked more at the skin, while with the last 4 I focussed more on her dyes

1 upvotes on reddit
Valy2013 · 7 months ago

I could be wrong since I haven’t tested this, but just based on my own experience as a cool, fair olive, even within the colors that should work for us, some are definitely better than others. I think your eye makeup looks cool-toned in all the pictures, and for me at least, that’s the most striking part of your look. It really makes your beauty stand out. As for the blush and lips, I don’t see much orange in them in the last four. They still lean a bit cool or at least look really natural. It just makes you look more alive and radiant.

Something else I’ve noticed about cool-toned olives is that it’s not just about physical coloring. Our overall vibe plays a big role too. Some cool-toned olives seem to have this really sweet aura about them, and pink looks extra good on them because it enhances that energy. (And then there are people like me, who look best in the most deathly grays possible🥲)

But in your case, I actually think the deeper shades suit you better than the light pinks in the first pictures. The richer tones seem to bring out more depth in your features and complement your vibe more. So maybe it’s about the depth of the shade rather than the tone?

Agree strongly that a lot of the shades in the photos actually are cool toned. And yes, it’s also eye and hair coloring and saturation levels that play a role

In the end, what works is whatever creates a harmonious look between the olive skin, the saturation level, and hair and eye color.

1 upvotes on reddit
sweetly16 · 7 months ago

Your hair is showing way more brassy/warm highlights in the last 4 photos (warmer makeup) which highlights warmer colors better VS your hair in the first set with cool makeup. I think cool makeup looks lovely on you.

If you can swing both however you could be neutral however I see green in your neck which is an indicator of being a cool olive. Generally, more green tends to lean cool and more yellow tends to lean warm on the olive spectrum.

This is true, the orangey hair is before I toned it with an ashier tone

1 upvotes on reddit
veturoldurnar · 7 months ago

Looks like your main trait is being muted toned, and temperature may be not that important. It's hard to say if you are more cool or warm toned because you need to compare cool and warm shades of similar muteness.

6 upvotes on reddit
veturoldurnar · 7 months ago

I know I'm cool toned, but bright pink or bright lavender in makeup looks a bit clownish on me. However if it's mixed with lots of grey undertones it's working great.

Recently figured out my skin tone has less warmth than I thought so have been experimenting with only cool toned makeup (no bronzer, only silvers and taupes on the eye, etc). Does this work for me, or would I benefit from adding back in warmth to my makeup? Thank you 🤗

I'd say you've nailed your look.

You can always play around with color on the eyes or lips for a special event or something like that. But other than that, I honestly think you look gorgeous and the warm tones are clearly where it's at for you.

The warm swatches look better on you, but from your face I would guess you’re more neutral. I think it’s pretty common for people with neutral undertones to be confused because it’s in-between warm and cool.

I would ordinarily think, "Fair, blonde, blue eyes cool", but the blues/greens on your wrist make you look bruised. The warm colors are more flattering. I'm now thinking neutral, but leaning warm.

Both! Low key I wear any color I feel whether it matches my skin tone or not, a lot of the time it’s about how to tie it together with your blush and maybe your outfit. Yellow doesn’t look the best on me but with the right blush I still get “omg so cute”

Using warm tones on cool skin

Posted by [deleted] · in r/Makeup · 2 years ago

I am a "warm spring" strawberry blonde with very fair cool toned skin. Is it a thing to mix in warmer or neutral foundations with your current tone of foundation to warm things up a bit?

Are there any special tricks for this?

Any recommendations?

Am I gonna look like a Oompa Loompa?

I normally wear 44C in KVD foundation. I'd like to keep using the same foundation but a warmer shade mixed with my current foundation.

Does your current foundation shade match you? If so then I wouldn’t recommend trying to change your foundation shade. If you want to warm things up then I’d recommend doing it with a bronzer

2 upvotes on reddit

DramaticMagpie · 2 years ago

No tips or tricks other than embracing experimentation (and failure).

Mixing foundation is just mixing expensive paint - and can be necessary to get a shade you like (I also have cool pale skin and the zone between being washed out and looking like an Oompla Loompa is narrow). It's just about experimentation and finding an appropriate hard non-porous surface to mix on (I've recycled smallest dishwasher safe bowls out there for dipping sauces, where as pro makeup artists have mixing pallets for a reason). It's a matter of experimentation to get the ratios, amount and application right. Another option is to use bronzer over the foundation to warm things up - but again that requires experimentation re: shade and application to your personal taste.

Cool colors on warm undertone

Posted by CompetitiveMorning39 · in r/OliveMUA · 5 months ago

Cool blush on warm brown skin

I've NC35ish skin with a very warm golden undertone. I think it leans a bit olive as well. Despite being so warm, I do not look good in warm blushes. I look best in cool pinks. And warm lipsticks pull very pink on me.. can anyone explain why this happens?

Are you sure you’re warm? I thought I was too but looking yellow doesn’t necessarily mean warm. Maybe you’re neutral leaning cool? Try berry and purple blushes. If those look good on you then you’re probably neutral leaning cool or just straight up cool. I lean cool and I have the same issue with some lipsticks. Or maybe you’re muted and the blushes you’re using are too saturated.

30 upvotes on reddit
C
CompetitiveMorning39 · OP · 5 months ago

No I don't think I'm cool. But you're probably right about the saturation - I'm fairly muted, and the warm colours I tried were super bright. Thank you!

4 upvotes on reddit
Apothowhat · 5 months ago

If you think you might be muted and have a Sephora in your area, I would try to swatch out the Tower28 cream blushes (I’m quite fair and like Magic Hour but folks on this sub have recommended other shades) and the REFY cream blush in Rose or Malaya (depending on your depth level).

These are both quite muted and might help you see how those shades look against your skin. Magic Hour looks beige in the pan but looks like a pinky coral on me and the REFY in Rose looks like pale chewing gum in the pan but looks more bright and warm but not harsh on my skin. Those shades might help you narrow down good shades for you that are neutral to warm but muted within other ranges like Phytosurgence that have more options.

2 upvotes on reddit
jjackmihoff · 5 months ago

if muted colours suit you best it's likely because you're a neutral olive and not a warm olive. i'm the same, and i can wear both cool and warm colours as long as they're muted. i think that would work for you !

1 upvotes on reddit
ScrewYourDamnFairies · 5 months ago

I’ve heard Phytosurgence has good muted blushes and maybe eyeshadows as well.

4 upvotes on reddit

I agree with them. I thought I was warm for ages because of the golden tones, but had exactly the same as you, with cool colours looking way better and lipsticks pulling pink. Then someone on here described themself as neutral-cool with golden overtones and it clicked. I honestly think it's better to go by the colours that look good on you rather than what your skin looks like. Do you also tend to prefer cool-coloured clothing, or is the blush thing an anomaly?

3 upvotes on reddit
spectravondergeists · 5 months ago

If you have a lot of yellow in your base makeup, the blue in a cool-toned pink blush sometimes mixes with the yellow to make a green tone which can flatter olive skin depending on your exact overtone. You may also just prefer the look of pink blush- I find that most warm blushes look like “blonzers” on me which can be pretty but looks very beachy and glam to me, I prefer pink cheeks because I think it’s cuter.

5 upvotes on reddit
C
CompetitiveMorning39 · OP · 5 months ago

Yes I was wondering if it's just the second possibility - I do think pink blush looks so much cuter than warmer colours on other people too!

3 upvotes on reddit
C
CompetitiveMorning39 · OP · 5 months ago

I solved this problem, everyone! Turns out the blushes I believed to be "cool" weren't actually all that cool. To test this out, I bought a super cool-toned blush - Essence Lovely Lilac. It is a gorgeous light purple, but unfortunately it looks so bad on me. I look sick when I wear it. So I think the blushes that I believed to be cool pinks - Rare Beauty Hope and Bliss, NYX Sweet Cheeks in Babydoll etc. - were not as cool undertoned as I thought. Anyway, thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

How to know if you are cool tone or warm tone

how to determine your undertone

AI Answer

makeup tips for warm skin tones

Here are some key makeup tips for warm skin tones:

  1. Foundation: Choose foundations with warm undertones (look for terms like "golden," "honey," or "peach"). Avoid overly cool or pink tones, as they can clash with your natural warmth.

  2. Concealer: Opt for concealers that are slightly warmer than your foundation to brighten under the eyes and cover blemishes without looking ashy.

  3. Blush: Warm skin tones look great with blushes in peach, coral, or warm pink shades. These colors enhance your natural glow.

  4. Eyeshadow: Earthy tones like warm browns, golds, coppers, and warm greens complement warm skin tones beautifully. Avoid overly cool shades like icy blues or grays.

  5. Lip Color: Choose lipsticks in warm shades like corals, peachy nudes, and warm reds. These colors will harmonize with your skin tone and enhance your overall look.

  6. Highlighter: Go for gold or champagne highlighters instead of silver. These shades will add warmth and a radiant glow to your complexion.

  7. Bronzer: Use bronzers with a warm, golden undertone to add dimension to your face. Apply it to the hollows of your cheeks, along your jawline, and on your forehead.

Recommendation: When selecting products, always test them on your jawline or wrist to see how they blend with your skin tone in natural light. This will help ensure you choose the most flattering shades for your warm complexion.
