TL;DR
Natural Light and Photography
One method to determine your undertone is to take a photo in natural light. This helps avoid artificial lighting that can skew perception of your skin tone. Stand facing a window during daylight and use the back camera for better quality [1:1]. This technique allows you to observe the subtle hues in your skin more accurately.
Color Testing with Accessories and Fabrics
Accessories can be a quick test: silver jewelry typically complements cool tones, while gold looks better on warm tones [5:1]. Additionally, draping different colored fabrics over yourself in a brightly lit area, such as a store, can help identify which colors enhance your complexion. Cool-toned fabrics will have blues and purples, while warm-toned ones feature oranges and reds
[5:2],
[5:4].
Vein Color Indicator
The vein test is another popular method. If your veins appear greenish, you likely have warm undertones. Conversely, if they look blue or purple, you probably have cool undertones [5:3]. However, this test might not work for everyone, especially if your veins show multiple colors
[1].
Makeup and Foundation Selection
When choosing makeup online, understanding product descriptions can help. For foundations, terms like "beige," "golden," and "chestnut" indicate warm tones, while "porcelain," "rose," and "sable" suggest cool tones [2:2]. Lipsticks with blue undertones are cool, whereas those with orange undertones are warm
[2:1]. If you're uncertain, try looking up YouTube tutorials for visual guidance
[2:1].
Personal Experiences and Seasonal Color Analysis
Some individuals find their undertone by trial and error with hair dye or foundation shades, discovering what makes them look more vibrant or glowy [3:1],
[4:1]. Exploring seasonal color analysis charts on platforms like Pinterest can also provide insights into which palette suits you best
[3:2].
not exactly about hair dye but i want to know how. when i bleached my hair it came out warm tone but it honestly looked fine on me. but cool tone also looks fine. my veins are every freaking color so that test didn’t work. my face does look a bit more pink than yellow but i think that’s just cause of my acne. is there a way i can test it out? ( this is me without lights on in my house, no neither warm or cold lighting)
Take a picture during the day facing your window in natural light. Use the back camera not the selfie camera. If you want to hide your eyes go ahead but we really should see where your freckles would be. Or go outside during the day in shade but with a background like a brick wall or a shrub completely covering the back (will help negate lighting issues and background distraction). Then repost. We can't really tell from this photo.
okayyy
When shopping online for things like lipsticks, Eyeshadow etc, how do I know if the product is cool toned or warm toned? I have very limited access to make up in shops to actually try things so I buy online then find out its the wrong tone.
I'm disabled so getting to shops is more difficult for me, and what I have close by don't have many products on offer.
Any help is appreciated so I can stop buying duds, I really need to get some good cool toned lipsticks (and avoid the warm ones).
With foundations check out the shade. Beige, Golden, Tan, Caramel, Chestnut are Warm tones.
Porcelain, Rose, Sable are Cool tones
Ivory, Buff, Nude are Neutral tones.
For lipstick I would research for example red with blue undertones and shop those brands
Oh wow I never knew that about foundation, thank you so much! That's super helpful.
It can be very subjective depending on the brand, but that’s a decent starting point, at least. Also, check YouTube for videos on “how to tell if blush/lipstick/eyeshadow is cool or warm”
My quick way is for blushes and lipsticks, id they look more orange, it’s warm. If they look more purple or blue, it’s cool.
Good luck!
Edit: adding for eyeshadows and contours/bronzers: if they look orange/red, they’re warm. If they look gray, they’re cool.
I’m a slightly cool leaning olive undertone. Because of the yellow and red undertones in my skin, I have to use a lot of trial and error when dinging colors that look good on me. Lipsticks, and face products (foundations, concealers, contours, blushes) are a challenge, because your colors of your skin “react” with the colors in your products and can produce unexpected results. There’s a whole “lipstick color theory” rabbit hole you can go down about finding the lipstick shade that actually shows up red on you, not the ones that look red in the tube. It’s interesting and incredibly complicated. lol.
I see guides on how to determine whether I’m a warm tone or a cool tone but I don’t understand them. I’m pretty new to make up and how to use it. I’m a dark blonde, it’s partially red due to dying it, with hazel eyes. My veins appear blue in the light and I have pale skin; I burn very, very easy. Thank you for any help!
It sounds like you’re a “clear spring” which is technically warm, but really more neutral. I’m a cool summer (technically cool, blue eyes and light ash hair, but my skin has a slight yellow undertone that pushes me towards a neutral) - it was a huge pain to figure out, but when I did it was so great. Check it out on Pinterest and see if those colors look good on you.
This comment just changed my life!
I was always so confused about my tone because my skin is fairly neutral but slightly yellowy, but my hair is ashy and my eyes are blue. I used to dye my hair ashy tones and grays a lot because I thought it would look better, but golden tones make me more glowy.
I have to look into this more
Ha ha, I’m glad it helped! It’s definitely worth it to look on Pinterest because there are like 12 categories and the subtleties make a big difference - I was thinking about OP and wondering if they might be a warm spring instead of a clear, because you might be a clear spring - I’m not an expert on any palette but my own really.
I have only been really into make-up for about a year or two now and my sister is usually the one who buys my foundation and concealer bcus we have the same skintone and it works well for me. A few days ago I dropped by the mall to buy foundation (cus we ran out of it) and when I asked the lady for it they said they were out of the cool toned foundation. I was a bit surprised bus I thought what we were using was a warm tone. I thought maybe she just bought the wrong shade before so l tried shade matching and turns out we actually have the right foundation.
Now I'm kinda confused bcus browns and peachy pinks look best on me, l've tried pinks before but it looked too overpowering for my liking. I have brown eyes though and my hair is also brown so maybe it's that? Maybe I'm neutral? What do you guys think?

In the makeup world, pink-leaning foundations = cool-toned and yellow-leaning foundations = warm toned.
If you have a foundation that you like and is a good shade match, then you’re already winning, regardless of whether you’re cool or warm toned.
Meanwhile, here’s me feeling quietly jealous. I have a cool-leaning olive skin tone. On the rare occasion I can find an olive foundation at the right shade depth, the assumption always seems to be that olive = warm-toned, so they still look too yellow or orange on me. Being matched to neutral or cool-toned foundations makes me look too pink and ashy.
What is the best way to find out if you were warm or cool toned without going to a specialist?
a diy easy version to do — go into a target which is super brightly lit, go to their clothes section, find plain t shirts with variety of color options (cool/warm) and drape it and see what looks best on you. make sure to wear no to minimal makeup and pull hair back.
or make two lists of lip tints that is marketed as cool/warm (peripera is affordable and has a wide array / romand too) buy a couple from each section and try it on to see what you looks better on you! accompany it with silver accessories w/ cool lips and gold with warm etc and compare — take pictures, go out and see when you get more compliments.
but also color analysis goes deeper than just warm/cool — there’s bright/clear, soft/mute, dark/deep in terms of tones. you can find out more on youtube and I 2nd recommend the youtuber 유이레 uireh suggested below! she is korean though and deal with mainly East Asian skin tones (using korean celebs as reference)
@carolbrailey on tiktok is a great resource with more non-East Asian references!
Wow thank you so much!!!
Thank you!
There’s quite a few ways, but vein colour can be an indicator.
If the veins visible through your skin look greenish, you may have a warm undertone. If the veins visible through your skin look blueish/purplish, you may have a cool undertone.
If its pretty gray, what would you say the undertone is?
Could be neutral.
The most accurate method is to drape different colored fabrics over you to see which ones complement your skin tone best. I recommend Uireh color on YouTube, who goes into a lot of detail about personal/seasonal color analysis.
Thank you!
You can check whether silver or gold accessories suit you better, silver means you have a cold undertone whereas gold indicates a warm undertone. If both look good on you then you‘re in between
Thank you!
I’d say neutral!
Hi there. You appear to be neutral..which is so rare…but it’s so very hard to tell whether you lean cool or warm. In my opinion, you either appear neutral or a fair olive tone.
Thanks! That could explain why I have such a hard time figuring it out!
I really thought I was cool toned (and probably a summer) and that’s what everyone always says. But I took some swatches of my hair/skin/eyes and I think they look warm toned? I have swatches from two pictures with slightly different lighting. Thoughts? NMIP
The swatches are affected by the lighting and the color of your clothing.
That said, you lean warm and I'm basing that more on the gold nose jewelry blending so nicely. I'd put you in autumn... true autumn or deep autumn.
The jewelry is rose gold if that makes a difference. Thanks for your input!
Gold jewelry would look just as good as the rose gold, especially looking at your other photo (just not too bright/shiny). I'm doubling down on autumn for you, true or soft now. Imagine that vest you have on in this color from soft autumn:
A picture of me in different colors/lighting for comparison! The mids/ends of my hair are dyed in this picture but my roots are natural.
Different lighting, but affected by the red you’re wearing?
That’s what i wondered, if it was just because of the red shirt 😅
You are warm
This one pic has you wearing a very bright top and its color is reflecting on your skin making you appear to be redder than you are IRL (per the additional pic below where your skin is very cool wearing a gray blue top). You need to take pics in a variety of drapes to get a more consistent, true-to-life answer.
The color swatching that you did here just pulls pigments from your overtone but doesn't tell us anything about the undertone of your skin and how your skin reacts to various colors.
Thanks for this input! Getting better drapes/pics will be my next project I suppose
I'm neutral-cool and at first didn't see if I'm warm or cool, but when I tried foundation it became extremely obvious. Just go to your local store and put some warm foundation next to some cool foundation of the same lightness and see which one blends in and which one stands out. I'm really very neutral, but the difference how much my skin shines when I put on cool foundation is enormous.
This is the way only if your skintone features exactly match your season. Some people may have warm skin but be in a cool season because the cool-colored clothes look better. Or vice versa. So good to find your skintone but not your season if you don't do drapes.
It's to explain these complementary people that made for the creation of the nonsense of "overtone" vs undertone.... to force- fit everyone having the same skin characteristics and season characteristics lol. Bc god-forbid anyone be complementary!
It's not like we put fair skin in deep seasons or vice-versa. And if we do it's because those fair skinned folks actually have a light "overcast" but they have a deep "undercast" and that's why they're in a deep season /s.
My friend and I both used to wear L'Oreal True Match foundation. We're both fair skinned blondes who never tan only burn with blue-green eyes. Often people think we're sisters.
One day she stayed overnight and borrowed my foundation, which was C1 (cool). She looked like she'd applied calamine lotion on her face! It was hilarious.
And that's how we realized she is a Spring and I am a Summer! And it started making sense why certain colors look great on her but not on me, and vice versa. And we figured out she's got green veins whereas mine are blue. Gold jewelry looks best on her, silver on me.
She would usually use the neutral N1 or warm version W1. I can also wear the neutral version okay. But in the L'Oreal Infallible Fresh Wear, I positively GLOW in the Rose Pearl.
Lipstick is another give away for us. She can rock neutral shades and warm reds. These shades look odd on me. I need a lipstick with a blue-based undertone. Anything mauve is a safe bet.
It doesn't show if you are a cool or warm season. A person who is in a cool season can fit in a warm foundation and a person from a warm season can fit in a cool foundation.
However, if you look better in warm blush, lipstick and eye shadow, it is a sign that you are a warm season, and if cool versions of those fits then you're a cool season
I was gonna say some cool tone foundation pulls warm on me.
>blush, lipstick and eye shadow
Still difficult because you need as thorough an understanding of the tones of the makeup as you would of drapes. For seasons that lean neutral, you can also go too far in your undertone even when you get the right undertone.
Plus if you're taking your foundation off your natural coloring then the colorful makeup may be pulling more from it than from you. Plus plus tons of makeup is sold with poor temperature guidance (e.g. Natasha Denona leans quite warm but will label certain neutral-warm shades "cool."). There's also the confounding factor of makeup using the term "neutral" to describe a brown or beige shade in contrast with a more colorful shade.
I am not sure if I understand what you are saying. But for instance color analyst Giulia from colour analysis studio wears a neutral warm foundation (because it matches how her skin look, she have yellowish skin), but she looks good in cool colors on her clothes and cool lipstick, blush and eyeshadow. She is a cool winter. I think it would look off if someone wore a foundation that did not match the skin color
This might work for some people, but my undertone and overtone are different!
It sounds like a great theory but it is not accurate. The problems… makeup definitions of warm, cool, undertone, etc are different than color analysis. Make up companies pay no attention to what colors are cool or warm when they are creation makeup, they are looking for a specific color and it is typically a color that will match the highest number of people. So you can have pigments that react and it doesn’t seem logical. In addition some make companies label foundation warm because it is too warm up the skin tone not that it is for a warm undertone. Others actually label the opposite what it is. While I appreciate everyone’s efforts to try and find quick and easy ways to get answers without going to see a professional, the problem is they are rarely accurate. Then people think they know their season and go buy makeup and clothing for the wrong season. Everyone is frustrated and money is wasted.
I’ve always struggled with this! I think I would categorize myself as olive toned but sometimes I feel like I lean warm, and sometimes cool. Hoping to get some other thoughts :)
Yes, cool undertone (with yellow/warm overtone)
This. I feel I have a very similar skintone to OP and I'm a cool summer, but I can get away with wearing gold and any foundation I buy I end up going neutral rather than cool
Ooo interesting! I still need to tackle my seasonal colour analysis too, but I think I may be a deep winter that can borrow from deep autumn. The cool undertone with a warm overtone makes sense!
Neutral af. Lucky you! You can easily wear gold or silver.
This is good news for all my current jewelry, haha!
neutral! the paperclip made me smile :)
Haha, I’m a little bit lacking in silver jewelry! But looks like I could expand my collection :)
Cool 😎
I would say cool toned !
You could use this, but I always find its easier to just pick neutral, and then decide from there. I have worked in the makeup industry for 3 years, and most people who come in and tell me they have cool or warm tones based on their vein color are usually wrong.
When in doubt, pick neutral, because more people have a neutral undertone than don’t. If the neutral color you chose looks more pink than your natural skin, you know you have a more warm or yellow undertone. If the color you chose looks more yellow, you know you have a cool or red undertone.
Finding my undertone has always confused me bc I have purple AND green veins. Some foundations in cool tones look good and some look real weird. Some neutral foundations look way too warm. It’s confusing!
Me as well! This is the first time I've seen this "test", I looked for other methods, too. According to jewellery I'm cool because silver fits me better, I also easily get sunburned. But my eyes, hair and color choices scream warm. And then my veins being purple and green... it's confusing, lol.
Ugh I hate the ones that say 1) do you look better in silver or gold? 2) do you look better in blues/purples or reds/browns (or whatever)?
First, I feel like that's all subjective? Second, I think I look better in gold jewelry (but I think it has to do with my redish blondish brownish hair) and purple clothes (but has to do with my blue eyes). None of it has to do with my skin at all.
So this is about undertone specifically, not the sort of shade "what season are you?" type thing. Hair and eyes color are 100% irrelvenant. This is mainly for makeup purposes, where people find the larger color theory systems better for overall styling.
But theres huge gaps with color theory. I've heard a frequent criticism that most of the common ones mainly work for Caucasians and fall apart for anyone who produces melanin. Which I definitely believe since this entire trick only works if you're light enough to be able to see veins through skin.
I have the same issue! I have blue/green and purple veins and it’s impossible to find a foundation to match my skin well.
What if my skin doesn't appear blue, green, or yellow in the sun lmao
Yeah I just look unhealthy. No particular color there.
Everyone has an undertone. If you're super pale, you're most likely cool.
For foundation a lot of companies will have like fair, medium, deep - how dark your skin is. But then break those three into neutral fair, cool fair... ECT so that's like 9 product choices. So I think she means choose things like the medium neutral, because how dark your skin is is usually easier to figure out.
I’ve been looking at my veins in different light for 10 minutes now and still don’t know which color jewelry looks good on me, or what my skin tone is!
My skin in the sun looks whiter than the background in reddit light mode, what do I make of it?
