How to Disable Read Receipts on WhatsApp?

Hi all just wanted to ask what the reason you guys turn off your read receipts?

I am confuse since most of my friends suddenly turn off their read receipts but I never dare to ask them because I am concern it maybe sensitive topic for them.

Hey guys, a question; i head read receipts turned off for a few hours, then back on again; since then i cannot see "last seen" for any contact, its like the read receipts are still off; any idea why?

Because people expect instant replies, some get mad when you leave them on read for while before replying. I decide when i reply your messages, not you. Basically this is the reason why i do it

I did do this - not replying instantly to others message and left them with blue tick and they started to get so annoyed by me read only text and reply few hours or days later but when they send those ‘urge me to reply instantly’ chat, I will straight forward said: “I got time to read but no time to reply because I am busy. I have to stop everything I do and reply while replying require greater amount of thought process. It’s not the same with reading a message. You just read. If you want me to reply instantly. Find someone else doing that for ya. I still doing that for all these people who want me to do instant reply and still same answer ‘no time for instant reply’ or else just use the notifications window to read and reply after few months later. I do left some people on blue tick, just so that they don’t message me often 🤷🏻‍♀️ Except if working and need to use WhatsApp then yes I set it off but better not involving this app when it comes to work/career. It’s hell.

main reason is "privacy" ( i personally hate when ppl turn off read receipt, i feel its really useless and unnecessary to do so). another reason is that they can leave the person on seen whenever they want and reply whenever they want without looking "rude". according to me its complete useless cuz its just ppl being pussies.

To me as well. Because these days whatsapp is replacing text messaging. You don’t go one day without seeing the app. Also I just know that by turning off the read receipt you can actually see someone stories without them knowing you actually seeing their stories. Since you are not gonna appear in their viewers.

because you can turn off read receipts altogether in Privacy settings.

I'm pretty confused about a WhatsApp feature, would someone please explain it to me?

I have disabled confirmation of reading, i.e. I don't see the blue double-checks. Does this also affect the viewing of statuses, I mean the stories that last 24 hours? For example, if I view a story, will the other person be able to see me on the list of people who have viewed the story (assuming that person has read receipt enabled)?

I have searched for info and each place says something different. I have also done some tests but I can't reach a conclusion. I would also like to know if there is any difference for iPhone users.

That's what I thought. (And I always have the read confirmation disabled, I don't put it on and off in my case).

What happens is that there are people who say that they are different things, that status works aside and that it is also different for iphones, that's why I'm unsure.

It used to be that case that whatsapp would only say you have messages and that would lead me to opening the app. Now that you can see the message on the notifications I barely even open it and I also don't respond to them, leading me to a bunch of stupid situations.

Is there a way I can disable this?

Your android notification settings will have this option. Go into Settings by swiping down and pressing the gear icon and search for "notifications on lock screen"

I just saw a post in another sub about read receipts being off as red flag. The post was about heartbreak and ghosting but what caught my eye was the person claimed that having read receipts off is a red flag. Ever since the feature of turning it back off came into existence, I've had it off. I hated having read receipts, because it meant I had to see if people who view my message and ignore it or people calling me out for ignoring their messages. Like having read receipts on for me personally feels like it's too much information on a messaging app. I'll happy with just the delivered confirmation, they can get back to me whenever but this whole ball game of seeing that somebody has seen it makes your head run needless scenarios. In my WhatsApp I have my read receipts off, last seen off and even the online display switched off. It's very peaceful in my opinion. They just see my DP if there are in my contacts.

Now is this considered as a red flag? Please tell me your opinions and your preferences. If you have it on, let me know why you find it better.

I had posted this before but the mods flagged it for relationship related or something.

I have always kept it on and will always keep it on. WhatsApp is meant to be an option for instant convo, atleast for me. Atleast for our close family like parents, partner, siblings, etc when they're in a different city and all.. even if they can't reply fast, it's like an assurance. And I've been seeing lately that people are calling off those who does this. I mean it's their choice to keep it on or off. Who cares.

There are many idiots who create unnecessary problems for not replying. People will be in different moods. Sometimes we won't feel like replying. So turning it off is a better option. No worries. We can reply whenever we want without worrying.

For me, I really don't care when my messages are seen by the recipient and I don't want them to see if I have viewed it either. I really don't think it's a red flag, just preferences. I'd rather call than text if it's something urgent.

I don't want someone i saw something. I'm not always in the mood to respond. Some people are so exhausting and want to make plans immediately or complain. I just rather wait until I feel like it to respond.

I would, just in case it lightens the load for the signal transmission letting something through when it would otherwise refuse to send, I don't know if it works like that or did in the past but I would anyway because in my opinion those kinds of features are superfluous for text communication and mostly cause problems even if the intention is clearer more punctual communication.

It adds a layer of anxiety to sending or receiving text that nobody needs IMO.

Off. Sometimes I read a message and can’t respond right away. Like at work. No one needs to know when it was read. I’m not setting that cadence with anyone. Phones already make us available at all times. I’m keeping when I read the message to myself.
