TL;DR To disable read receipts on WhatsApp, go to Settings > Account > Privacy and toggle off "Read Receipts". Note that this will also prevent you from seeing if others have read your messages.
Steps to Disable Read Receipts
Disabling read receipts in WhatsApp is straightforward. You can turn them off by navigating to the Privacy settings within the app. This setting ensures that others cannot see whether you've read their messages, but it also means you won't be able to see if others have read yours [3:2],
[3:4].
Impact on Viewing Statuses
There is some confusion regarding whether disabling read receipts affects viewing statuses (stories). According to most users, turning off read receipts does indeed hide your view of someone’s status [4:1],
[4:3]. However, once you turn read receipts back on, your name will appear in the list of viewers for any statuses you viewed while they were off
[4:4].
Reasons for Turning Off Read Receipts
Many users choose to disable read receipts for privacy reasons or to avoid the pressure of responding immediately to messages [1:4],
[2:3]. Some people prefer to reply at their own pace without feeling obligated to respond instantly
[1:7],
[2:4]. Others find it helpful to manage their energy and time when replying to certain contacts
[2:2].
Workarounds and Alternatives
If you're looking for a workaround to bypass read receipts without disabling them entirely, using the WhatsApp widget on Android allows you to read messages without sending a read receipt [3:1]. Additionally, reading messages directly from notifications is another common method
[3:5].
Disabling Message Previews
For those who want to disable message previews in notifications, this can be done through phone settings rather than within the WhatsApp app itself. On Android, you can adjust notification settings to hide message content on the lock screen [5:1],
[5:4].
Hi all just wanted to ask what the reason you guys turn off your read receipts?
I am confuse since most of my friends suddenly turn off their read receipts but I never dare to ask them because I am concern it maybe sensitive topic for them.
Hey guys, a question; i head read receipts turned off for a few hours, then back on again; since then i cannot see "last seen" for any contact, its like the read receipts are still off; any idea why?
Because people expect instant replies, some get mad when you leave them on read for while before replying. I decide when i reply your messages, not you. Basically this is the reason why i do it
I did do this - not replying instantly to others message and left them with blue tick and they started to get so annoyed by me read only text and reply few hours or days later but when they send those ‘urge me to reply instantly’ chat, I will straight forward said: “I got time to read but no time to reply because I am busy. I have to stop everything I do and reply while replying require greater amount of thought process. It’s not the same with reading a message. You just read. If you want me to reply instantly. Find someone else doing that for ya. I still doing that for all these people who want me to do instant reply and still same answer ‘no time for instant reply’ or else just use the notifications window to read and reply after few months later. I do left some people on blue tick, just so that they don’t message me often 🤷🏻♀️ Except if working and need to use WhatsApp then yes I set it off but better not involving this app when it comes to work/career. It’s hell.
>and reply after few months later.
thats a bit harsh
main reason is "privacy" ( i personally hate when ppl turn off read receipt, i feel its really useless and unnecessary to do so). another reason is that they can leave the person on seen whenever they want and reply whenever they want without looking "rude". according to me its complete useless cuz its just ppl being pussies.
That's dumb as fuck lmao
To me as well. Because these days whatsapp is replacing text messaging. You don’t go one day without seeing the app. Also I just know that by turning off the read receipt you can actually see someone stories without them knowing you actually seeing their stories. Since you are not gonna appear in their viewers.
Because it's their phone and they can do what they want.
Not the answer that I am looking for. I just wanna know what did I miss.. is there anything that I should be avoid when it comes to human interaction and considering whether or not I need to turn off my read receipts. Think positive behind the Q. Thank you.
Talk to your family and friends yo. Can't help further.
to read the message and then think about a reply.... and then forget to reply. then you have to wait weeks and ask if they forget to reply.
Sometimes i need to prepare myself orr find energy to reply to certain people. Turning off read receipts has helped me a ton!
I don’t want people to see that I’ve read their messages and “ignored them” cause I reply when I want to or when I have time
I no longer stress about people ignoring my texts or leaving me on read. And I can ghost people and reply whenever I feel like it . Best decision ever
This was my reason, and was wondering if there were more thinking this way
That which would still be my reasoning if I did do such
i don't use whatsapp
you mean a workaround to not send read receipts while being able to receive read receipts?
because you can turn off read receipts altogether in Privacy settings.
Or you can simply read the message in the notification like everyone else does
Which app did you use to force immersive mode without root??
I just have the whatsapp widget on my desktop and now I can read my messages without the person knowing I read it. Works great.
I'm pretty confused about a WhatsApp feature, would someone please explain it to me?
I have disabled confirmation of reading, i.e. I don't see the blue double-checks. Does this also affect the viewing of statuses, I mean the stories that last 24 hours? For example, if I view a story, will the other person be able to see me on the list of people who have viewed the story (assuming that person has read receipt enabled)?
I have searched for info and each place says something different. I have also done some tests but I can't reach a conclusion. I would also like to know if there is any difference for iPhone users.
thanks
Yes, if "Read receipts" are off, people also don't see that you watched the status.
It will show your name once you turn it back on.
That's what I thought. (And I always have the read confirmation disabled, I don't put it on and off in my case).
What happens is that there are people who say that they are different things, that status works aside and that it is also different for iphones, that's why I'm unsure.
thanks
i dont think it affect the story view. that is two different thing for read receipt and status
It used to be that case that whatsapp would only say you have messages and that would lead me to opening the app. Now that you can see the message on the notifications I barely even open it and I also don't respond to them, leading me to a bunch of stupid situations.
Is there a way I can disable this?
Edit: Android
I just completely disabled all notifications on my lockscreen lol
Ios or android?
Android, sorry for not specifying
In ios there is an option to make that but idk about android.
Your android notification settings will have this option. Go into Settings by swiping down and pressing the gear icon and search for "notifications on lock screen"
Maybe not in the app itself, but maybe in your phones settings could be an option for that
I just saw a post in another sub about read receipts being off as red flag. The post was about heartbreak and ghosting but what caught my eye was the person claimed that having read receipts off is a red flag. Ever since the feature of turning it back off came into existence, I've had it off. I hated having read receipts, because it meant I had to see if people who view my message and ignore it or people calling me out for ignoring their messages. Like having read receipts on for me personally feels like it's too much information on a messaging app. I'll happy with just the delivered confirmation, they can get back to me whenever but this whole ball game of seeing that somebody has seen it makes your head run needless scenarios. In my WhatsApp I have my read receipts off, last seen off and even the online display switched off. It's very peaceful in my opinion. They just see my DP if there are in my contacts.
Now is this considered as a red flag? Please tell me your opinions and your preferences. If you have it on, let me know why you find it better.
I had posted this before but the mods flagged it for relationship related or something.
My read receipts are off from day that option was introduced by WhatsApp
Yo bro same! Like from the rollout of that update back sometime in 2014 I've been on this setting.
I have always kept it on and will always keep it on. WhatsApp is meant to be an option for instant convo, atleast for me. Appurath ulla aalumayi neritt samsarikunna pole almost similar feeling kittunna platform. Avde poyitt read receipts off aaki ittal how the f am I supposed to know if that dude is even there on the other end. I consider turning read receipts off as safety measure for ghosting. Athavumbo kando ille onnum aarum ariyillalo.
Message nu samayathinum kaalathinum reply idaan alle whatsapp. Allenkil enik kath ayachaal pore. 😂
This… I keep my last seen, blue tick.. everything on. Like you said.. it’s something for instant convo for me. Alland aaru noki irikunnu.. ghosting okke🫠. One more thing, I instantly reply to every chats if my phone is with me, ignoring chats or leaving it unread irks me😐
Same here. I keep all these settings on. Atleast for our close family like parents, partner, siblings, etc when they're in a different city and all.. even if they can't reply fast, it's like an assurance. And I've been seeing lately that people are calling off those who does this. I mean it's their choice to keep it on or off. Who cares.
Same here. It's like an instinct for me. Venda ennu vicharichaalum patoolla.
Yes, I want to reply to a message in my own comfort and I want the freedom to do that. Deal with it
You can do that without turning it off as well. People will understand that you've read the message and might be busy.
There are many idiots who create unnecessary problems for not replying. People will be in different moods. Sometimes we won't feel like replying. So turning it off is a better option. No worries. We can reply whenever we want without worrying.
Turn on read receipts and read msg from notification 💀
How I feel talking to someone without read receipts
For me, I really don't care when my messages are seen by the recipient and I don't want them to see if I have viewed it either. I really don't think it's a red flag, just preferences. I'd rather call than text if it's something urgent.
Sometimes I want to see what someone sent and not have to respond immediately
I don't want someone i saw something. I'm not always in the mood to respond. Some people are so exhausting and want to make plans immediately or complain. I just rather wait until I feel like it to respond.
no because it forces me to respond sometimes
I would, just in case it lightens the load for the signal transmission letting something through when it would otherwise refuse to send, I don't know if it works like that or did in the past but I would anyway because in my opinion those kinds of features are superfluous for text communication and mostly cause problems even if the intention is clearer more punctual communication.
It adds a layer of anxiety to sending or receiving text that nobody needs IMO.
I remember turning that feature off as soon as it rolled out, I don’t understand why you’d want people knowing when you opened their message, because then they expect a response. Anyone else leave it off, and for those that have it on what’s your rationale?
Hell nah nobody needs to know if I’ve seen their texts or not
I leave it on. I'll answer when I get around to it. I'm under no obligation to answer when some one else decides I should.
I leave it on so you know I received and read your message.
Like a normal human
Same

Read receipts off since day 1 😂 I already have enough anxiety without people waiting for my reply like it's a court summons.
Off. Sometimes I read a message and can’t respond right away. Like at work. No one needs to know when it was read. I’m not setting that cadence with anyone. Phones already make us available at all times. I’m keeping when I read the message to myself.
I don’t expect you to respond right away. So there’s that. Take your time.
You can turn off the typing indicator?
More to the point, why does it bother you?
If someone asks why the sky is blue, that doesn't mean they're bothered by the sky being blue.
You seem very defensive and easily offended.
You got that from one SINGLE post on reddit that you've chosen to interpret a particular way?
lol okay buddy!
It doesn't! It was a curiosity as I don't have iOS and didn't realize you could turn off one and not the other.
Why does my question bother you?
I don’t think the typing bubble anywhere is ever able to be toggled on/off….
That makes sense!! Thank you
idk how to turn it off...
Lmfao that makes the most sense. Idk why I didn't think of that 😂😭
Is it turn offable?
LMAO @ u/due_common_7137 sperging out over me asking a question on askreddit, and then blocking me when I said he was easily offended 💀
I didn't know you could do that
You can’t, OP is genuinely clueless
