How to Hide Online Status on WhatsApp?

despite reading many tutorials claiming to show how to do this, it simply just does not work. people can see when im online despite doing exactly what the tutorials say to do.

whats up with this? pretty infuriating. anyone got a solution?

There isn't a setting to hide your online status, only your last seen.

Unfortunately you cannot hide this. You can disable last seen, turn off internet, reply the message, close whatsap and connect to internet. But its a lot of work to do this every time.

So I just knew about the last seen and online setting at whatsapp, I only knew about last seen setting before. So when I go to my whatsapp setting, my apps only have last seen setting while my friends have last seen and online. Why I don’t have? I want to hide my online status too..help..

You can’t hide online status. Ever. Not from contacts, not from regular people.

It’s been said for many years that the setting to hide online status is coming, but nothing yet.

It will always show you are online the second that you launch the app.

Ok it’s a recent addition. I don’t have it yet. Can’t wait to have to. I mean for 12 years or so it wasn’t like this, so you could see where I am coming from.

You're incorrect. WhatsApp has been rolling out instages to hide online status. I have it. It works just like last seen. Nobody can see when you're online and you can't see when the other person is online.

Thank God they also added the feature to select who can see you online.

Oh I'm using Android.... If that matters.

I am wondering the same thing. A lot of my friends have the option. I have an iPhone 13. They also have iPhones. I don’t understand why they are rolling out the function like this, if it passed the beta stage, why not releasing it all at once. Also, this seems to be account related and not device related. My mom had the option on her iPhone 13 Pro and when she switched to a 14 promax, the option was still there.

I've been having major issues with someone I can't block (personal reasons) but messages me the SECOND I am available online. I think she has an third party app notifying her of my online status. I already have my privacy settings set so that you can't see "last seen". Is there a way to hide the "online" status?

Edit: In case anyone gets confused... this IS stalker/harassment story. And for everyone who might mention blocking the person.... I quite literally CAN'T. I HAVE to communicate with her daily or every other day.

I have asked this question mutliple times in mutliple places, even tweeted whatsapp why they dont give this option like every other app, but it seems its not something they are going to do. I have seen some third party apps you can download, but the consensus is that they are probably not safe for your phone

They really need to fix this. Stalking and harassing exists. I can think of a LOT of situations in which you can't block someone and if that person is crazy enough to download a third party app to get notified of your online presence.... that's not ok. I just need to be able to talk to others while still having communication with that person on my own terms.

THIS! a pain, yep! but go offline, send the messages to every other person you need to reply/communicate with, close whatsapp, then go back online

repeat procedure until you… get a better option

I was wondering what you all think...of a person that should never want to hide things from the other to that person hiding a old phone number ported and also another number that he apparently communicates with whomever. It all is a secret and he says he is doing nothing at all and that he don't have anything hide. Any advice?

The most private option offered is "contacts only", unfortunately. Signal doesn't have an online indicator at all.

Edit: I was incorrect. You can disable last seen and online.

I remember using whatsapp a long time ago and being able to go as far as responding to people (or them responding to me) where the "ONLINE" status wasn't shown. Everywhere I go in google it talks about the "last seen". Sorry but that's not what I want, I also have friends who hate this annoying "feature" that whatsapp has, that honestly violates privacy in a big way. Perhaps it's great for people to spy on their spouses and all, but it's not very useful for people who just want to respond to "important" contacts and leave the others "untouched".

PS ANYONE KNOW OF A THIRD PARTY APP TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE PLEASE PM ME!!

I used to have whatsapp on my windows phone (2016) there was no such thing as "locked screen notifications" and yes someone would answer my message where their "online" status wasn't shown. That was of course dependent on my own "hide online status" setting.

Lol. If your last seen is already hidden, the only way for people to see you online is if they are online and have your chat open. This is a very big coincidence and can only happen if they are obsessively checking up on you

You should be able to see "online" if they opened the app whether your conversation on their end is open or not. There is a setting to hide that now.

Well, may not be what you want to hear but you might just want to uninstall the desktop version then. I mean, it is just a messaging app so not much to check out over there unlike social media sites and if you have notifications turned on, your phone will let you know when you have a message anyway.

There are modded whatsapp's some people have that notify you as soon as someone comes online if you've messaged them recently. It also shows "online" next to their name outside the message

Hi, sorry I have searched all over reddit, but couldnt find an answer to my question. I thought you may know! Is it possible to automate turning off your last seen or must it be manual? I have a situation where someone shuts off their last seen exactly 3 weeks after no contact to the hour, and I became curious if there is maybe an automated feature to schedule turning off your last seen - would like to set it up myself and am not able to find any info on it....

I wonder, WHY do whatsapp have to show my ONLINE status to everyone on the f***ing planet? I have stalkers on my contacts who waits for my ‘ONLINE’ , and then instantly chat me ‘Hey why don’t you reply to my messages?’ Whenever I’m online. I can’t even block this person, since this person is actually my real world friend.

These made me to be super uncomfortable when replying messages in whatsapp, because I have to ‘disappear’ as fast as I could !!

Is that something that's patentable, maybe the technology to do it is owned and developed by telegram? There's a chance nobody else will have it. WhatsApp you can only turn it on for everybody, off for everybody or select people that can see if you're online or not. Sounds like a good idea though.

I don't think they hold a patent and no WhatsApp does not have option to turn off "Online" option. The moment you open WhatsApp you are shown as online to everyone who has your phone number. Whether they are in your contact list or not it does not matter.

you can't. They have no way to disable this if you are in conversation with someone. It's possible the new beta with the enhanced privacy features will allow this, but as of right now, no.
