What Redditors are Saying

Managing WhatsApp Notifications

TL;DR To manage WhatsApp notifications effectively, adjust settings within the app to control notification priority and visibility. Consider third-party apps for more granular control over notification sounds and vibrations.

In-App Notification Management

If you're experiencing interruptions from message previews while using WhatsApp, you can disable high-priority notifications. This setting prevents pop-up notifications from appearing while you are actively using the app. To do this, navigate to WhatsApp settings, then Notifications, and turn off "Use high priority notifications" for both chats and groups [1:1].

Notification Categories on Android

Android allows users to manage notification categories independently, which can be useful for controlling specific types of notifications like group messages or backup alerts. You can long press on a notification to access options to toggle it off or check under "Other notifications" in the app settings [3:4][3:5][3:6].

iPhone Notification Settings

On iPhones, notifications can appear on the Lock Screen, Notification Center, or as banners. You can customize these settings per app, including WhatsApp, to ensure that notifications behave as desired. For example, enabling notifications in the Notification Center ensures they remain accessible even after being dismissed from the Lock Screen [4:1].

Third-Party Apps for Notification Control

For those seeking more detailed control over notification sounds or vibrations, third-party apps like Buzzkill can be helpful. These apps allow you to set rules for notifications, such as silencing all but WhatsApp when expecting important messages [5:1]. This can provide a tailored experience based on your current needs or preferences.

Additional Considerations

Beyond adjusting settings within WhatsApp and using third-party apps, consider exploring device-specific features that may offer additional customization options. Some devices have built-in modes or settings that allow for further refinement of how notifications are handled, especially during different activities or times of day.

Is there a way to turn off message notifications from WhatsApp while I’m using the app? I’ll be typing to someone, then someone from a different chat sends a message and a notification pops up in the middle of screen, preventing me from typing etc. It shows preview of the text and offers Dismiss or Open. Super annoying!!! I’d love for that not to happen at all. Any advice?

To turn off the preview of the text go to WhatsApp settings-Notifications-Use high priority notification-Off(chat and group)

Planning on my first Honor device, coming from Oppo and Samsung. Questions about notifications -

  1. Do magic os notifications have suggested replies in the notification?

  2. Can you manually reply inline from a notification?

  3. Can you swipe down on a notification banner to open it in a floating window?

Yes there is an option to copy the MFA code. But I see no handling whatsoever when someone shares Google Maps location. I tested with Google Messages and WhatsApp out of curiosity. LMK if you have any other questions.

Android lets you manage notification categories independently. Though it's up to the developer to implement them properly...

I think it may be one of the notification categories. You can toggle certain types of notifications of apps like group notification, back up notification etc.

iPhone and its notifications

Posted by greciavs9 · in r/iphone · 3 months ago

I recently switched to an iPhone after almost 20 years with Android, and I'm noticing very poor notification management on my iPhone. When I unlock the phone, the notifications disappear because they're only on the wallpaper. For example, some of them are from WhatsApp, and when I log into the WhatsApp app, even though I've already seen them on the wallpaper. they don't disappear. Why? The only solution is to pull down the blind and click on each one to make sure I've read them. This is completely useless. The same thing happens with Outlook notifications. I can't manage them directly from the blinds mark as I read, or eliminated. I have to log into the Outlook app and manage my emails once inside. I'd like to know how people who have used iPhones for years have managed their notifications efficiently. Serious answers only. Thanks.

Notifications can appear either on the Lock Screen, in the Notification Center, or as a banner. You can choose which notifications per app appear as what. Lock Screen notifications are your most recent notifications, if they’re enabled. Over time, new notifications come in and those older ones get moved to Notification Center, if they’re also enabled there as well. Banners are immediate notifications when the phone is unlocked and in use. Once dismissed, they are then moved to the Lock Screen if enabled, and then eventually the Notification Center. Simply looking at the notification or even expanding the notification window is not considered as “interacting” with it. The only way to actively dismiss notifications is to either interact by pressing them to open the app, long-pressing the notification to bring up options to choose from that are set up by the app developer, or clearing it from Notification Center by swiping left or clearing all notifications at once, if they appear there. Simply opening the app directly from the Home Screen or App Library is not guaranteed to dismiss notifications or badge counts because your device does not know which notifications to dismiss when opening. That is also up to the app developer to configure how notifications and badge are handled.

Apps are sandboxed from each other and from the operating system itself. The only service capable of marking an email as read in Outlook app is a service handled by Outlook app itself. The app is completely incapable of knowing that you expanded the notification window, and an email being read is handled by your email server / app, not by iOS (for instance I can mark an Outlook email as read or unread through the default mail app, and that will reflect in the Outlook app as well).

Notification settings

Posted by geraldinus · in r/androidapps · 1 month ago

Hi there,

I have always had struggles with notifications on my Samsung, not that they did not work or anything, but more like the managing of the notifications.

I really would like to have a kind of app that makes it easy to manage the sound or vibration that comes with a specific notifications.

For example: sometimes I am expecting to get an important message via Whatsapp. In that case, I just want my phone to be quietly receiving notifications, except for those from Whatsapp. Other cases are when I expect to be called, which makes me want to turn off all the sound or vibrations from any apps, besides the incoming call.

Do you guys have the same struggle? I just want to manage my notifications through a few taps, and not having to go deep into my settings to accomplish te same.

I can do such a thing with the use of the Routines app, combined with Routines++ (if u don't know this app, it's no problem), but this app does not make it easy to change the settings within a few seconds.

Is there any solution to this? It will make my life alot easier.

Thanks in advance!

How to dismiss WhatsApp notifications after answering?

Posted by dedqq · in r/tasker · 3 years ago

Hey!

I remember that older Androids used to dismiss notifications from WhatsApp as soon as you answer to the the message in status bar. It's not a practice from couple of years ago.

Is there a way for Tasker to help with this, dismissing this notification as soon as I answer?

Thank you for reading!

You can intercept the notification ID and after replying dismiss it using that ID. (Did the same thing using auto notification)

Intercept whatsapp notifications and in the task cancel it if the notification does NOT have mark as read button. To cancel you need to set variables under advanced section

How do I disable WhatsApp popup notifications?

Posted by leros · in r/androidapps · 3 years ago

I just moved to Samsung S22 Ultra and I'm now getting popup notifications for the first time. I've disabled them in other apps but I can't figure out how to do it for WhatsApp. The place where the setting should be in WhatsApp is disabled and says "not available" but I'm getting popup notifications from WhatsApp.

I'll post an image as a comment.

Don't use whatsapp but since I use a samsung phone these are normally inside the app info. You go there, go to the notification section and there might be a notification categories, tap on in and disable "show as pop-up"

The notification section in the WhatsApp has an area for popup notifications but it's grayed out. Its like they built the setting to turn off popups but disabled it for some reason.

kapirote · 3 years ago

You can set that up on the options of the notifications, not on WhatsApp. Tap and hold on a WhatsApp notification and check the settings. You should be able to disable that somehow (sorry, I don't remember how it's called exactly). If you don't want to mess too much with it, just change its priority and then they will become silent.

I don't see any way inside the Android notifications to disable popups. That's usually inside the individual apps as far as I understand. I can disable WhatsApp notifications altogether but I'd rather not to do that.

Notification Overwhelm and Ghosting—How Do You Manage Conversations?

Posted by Slightlyburnttoast22 · in r/adhd_anxiety · 5 months ago

I often find myself completely overwhelmed by the constant stream of notifications from work, family, friends, and social media. It’s hard to keep up, and before I know it, I’ve unintentionally ghosted people. The flood of messages feels impossible to manage, and when I finally feel ready to respond, I can’t help but feel guilty or awkward for not replying sooner. Does anyone else experience this with notification overload? How do you keep track of important conversations without getting overwhelmed? I’d also love to know if there are any apps or strategies that help prioritize messages so I can avoid missing important ones and not feel so swamped. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Give yourself permission to tell people that you will get back to them when you can. You can even do this in advance. Explain how the overwhelm affects your ADHD, and tell them that if you aren't answering, that is the reason.

Turn off notifications on social media. Possibly delete the apps.

That stuff really isn't that important. You don't have to reply to everything on there. It's sending messages into the masses.

Email? If someone emails it can usually wait a day. If it's an emergency they will call. Check it once or twice a day. Maybe bit more often if you are expecting something important.

Also turn off notifications of massive group texts. Just check it every once in a while. So your phone isn't blowing up when they are having a conversation.

Every single time. I feel like I have to explain myself… or “omg I can’t believe I just now saw your text” (a week later). Or, sorry if took so long for me to respond…. Then I list a ton of stuff I did between then and now and act like each thing was unbelievably time-consuming. I hate doing it but I do it to everyone.

No no. These things pop up as I get a message. When I press them, I can rather drag them to a garbage bin or click open a small window revealing a cropped version of the app and the message that I've received. My old phone didn't do this, but just showed me the notification on the "toolbar" or whatever it is on the top of the screen. I'd like only that to happen, and not these dots showing up all the darn time.

Managing overloaded Whatsapp messages

Posted by iloveapi · in r/productivity · 5 years ago

1st situation:

My work organization relies heavily on the Whatsapp group as a primary medium (instead of email or meetings) to give tasks and asking for information. This is further supplemented by discussions that were also held within the group.

I find it hard to scroll back to the messages to directly reply to my superior to indicate I've completed the task, and sometimes due to too many messages, I miss the message that was addressed to me.

2nd situation:

Now due to Covid-19, I now have an additional WhatsApp group by school teachers to provide work to my kids. Every now and then, there will be a message to inform who has completed the assignment which contributes to the dumping of unnecessary messages in my existing dump of Whatsapp. This is somewhat similar to my work group as I need to track which homework has been done and if I do miss any from the messages.

Question:

How do I overcome this?

Am I overcomplicated things?

I can't change the workflow of my organization giving task, no do I have any say on how the teachers suppose to give homework to my kids.

Any opinions and tips are highly appreciated.

Thanks

I don’t see any workaround. I believe I would just stop reading WhatsApp on my phone, use only the desktop app and manage time slots only to read WhatsApp and translate it to my own task app or to notes... but that’s barely a bandaid on an infected wound.

What about getting them to set up a separate WA group only for tasks. That way the tasks group is kept clear of chat messages and is easier to read.

Threads in slack were designed to solve this very use case. In your case best solution is to mute the groups for 1 hour and looking at regular intervals to derive actionable tasks. Write down the tasks in any app you like (Todoist, Microsoft todo , Notion etc) or a notebook if you like.

From my knowledge there isn't too much you can do about this situation.

To me WhatsApp doesn't seem to be a very efficient system for work.

You could take up some programming and make something to manage your WhatsApp messages (probably already exists) but regardless that is a lot of effort to setup.

The better solution for you and your company is to change messaging software to something like Slack. This probably isn't going to happen tho because the company bureaucracy.

how to manage whatsapp notifications

Key Considerations for Managing WhatsApp Notifications:

  1. Notification Settings:

    • Go to Settings > Notifications in WhatsApp to customize how you receive alerts for messages, groups, and calls.
    • You can toggle notifications on or off for individual chats or groups.
  2. Mute Chats:

    • For less important chats, you can mute notifications. Long press on the chat, select the mute icon, and choose the duration (8 hours, 1 week, or Always).
  3. Custom Notifications:

    • Set custom tones or vibrations for specific contacts or groups to prioritize important messages. This can be done in the chat settings.
  4. Do Not Disturb Mode:

    • Use your phone's Do Not Disturb mode to silence all notifications during specific times. You can allow calls from certain contacts if needed.
  5. Notification Previews:

    • Adjust notification previews in your phone’s settings to show or hide message content on the lock screen.
  6. Archiving Chats:

    • Archive chats that are not currently active but you don’t want to delete. This will remove them from your main chat list and reduce clutter.

Recommendation: Regularly review your notification settings and mute or customize notifications for chats that are less important. This will help you focus on what matters without being overwhelmed by constant alerts.
