TL;DR
Preparation and Application
Proper preparation is crucial for successful Gel-X nails. Start by prepping your nails, which includes pushing back the cuticles without cutting them [2:4],
[2:7]. Ensure that the nail tips are not applied too close to the cuticle to prevent lifting
[2:3],
[2:8]. Using an e-file can help thin out the nail tip around the cuticle for a more natural look during grow-outs
[2:2]. When applying the gel, make sure it doesn't touch the skin or cuticle to avoid potential allergies
[1:2].
Curing Process
Gel-X nails require curing with a UV/LED lamp. This process ensures the gel is set properly and helps achieve detailed designs [5:3]. Some users recommend techniques like stamping or painting a centerline to get precise smile lines
[5:4].
Maintenance and Care
Regular maintenance can enhance the longevity of your Gel-X nails. Daily application of cuticle oil is recommended to keep nails healthy and improve retention [3:2]. Avoid using your nails as tools to prevent damage
[3:2]. Moisturizing hands and oiling cuticles after finishing your nails is also advised
[1:3].
Helpful Resources
For those new to Gel-X nails, watching tutorial videos can be beneficial. There are several online resources that provide step-by-step guidance on Gel-X application [2:1],
[2:2]. Practicing regularly will help improve your technique over time
[2:5].
Product Recommendations
Some specific products used in Gel-X applications include UNA GELLA medium almond Gel-X nails and Gelike EC 6-in-1 Nail Glue [5:1]. These products have been positively mentioned by users for their quality and effectiveness.
That color looks great on you. How many times have you done this? Looks better than I can do, that's why I ask. Remember you can't get this stuff on your skin or cuticle at all, bc it'll give you allergies to nail products chemicals if you do. But you can use liquid latex to paint on your cuticle and skin around your nail to protect it then peel that off when you get done. I just wanted to let you know it's important to not get any on your skin because one nail looks like you got a little in the cuticle.
Other than that, beautiful. I wish I had the hand control to do my nails.
Thank you for the tip! I have been painting my natural nails for about a year now but that photo is my second time doing gelx nails with the nail tip. I’ve been able to practice designs with regular polish on my natural nails but wanted to try something new that’s why im starting gel x!
Never forget to oil your cuticles and moisturise your hands after
Thank you!
I have a similar thing happen when I do gel x. Something that helps me is using the e-file to file down the nail tip around the cuticle to make it thinner and look more natural during grow outs. Here’s a link to a helpful tutorial: https://youtube.com/shorts/kDyYqYGAg6g?feature=share
Thank you for the video! I just bought that particular drill bit so now o have a way of using it. One thing I feel like I definitely need to do as well is not put the mail super close to my cuticle. Sometimes when I apply the mail tips I notice that it is closer to my cuticle and the gel glue seeps on the side of the nails.
Here’s some more links to videos that will help with gel x application.
You’re applying it too close to the nail bed. Apply it a bit further away from the nail bed.
Also try the gel x overlay method or use an electric file to drill around the cuticle to make it more seamless.
I think for lack of experience, you did really well! Make sure you prep your nails really well around your cuticles and don't apply the gel to close, you will end up with rough edges and have a difficult time filing! Good job!
Thank you! I do prep my nails before application but one thing I’m not sure on is cutting back the cuticle. Should be just pushing back my cuticles after using blue cross cuticle remover or should I be cutting them? I’ve been cutting them so far.
I wouldn't cut them, I use a medium grit file to push them back and smooth your nail bed gently. That also helps with adhesion and prevents lifting.
You're welcome, keep practicing! I've been doing my own for about 20 years, just switched to gels a year ago and I still make mistakes 😅
I would suggest implementing the practice of applying clips for c-curve right after the lamp - imo your almonds are unbalanced because the widest part is where the nail bed ends.
I’m in love. But because I’m usually a press-on girlie, I’m used to constant anxiety about them falling off/lifting! Any tips for keeping these beauties beautiful?
Gorgeous nails and ring! Use cuticle oil daily to help with retention, and don’t use your nails to open things (nails are jewels, not tools!)
Do you mind sharing how much you paid? I'm trying to get a sense of how much to expect. That color on you is perfect!
Thanks! The price for the Gel-x itself was $60. I added a manicure/cuticle care for $25.
Beautiful ❤️
Stunning
Nice!
obviously not a professional but just did these on myself today and i don’t think they came out too bad. any tips and tricks for doing these at home would be greatly appreciated tho!
So cute love the tats too!
thank you!!
All polishes are modelones except for the glow in the dark top coat by Cre8tion. The nails are UNA GELLA medium almond Gel X nails that I've filed down for personal preference. The glue used to adhere them is Gelike EC 6-in-1 Nail Glue. If there are any further questions on specifics I'm happy to share/help.
Thank you for being such a wonderful community. I adore you all. 💖
Gorgeous! Is the nail glue a gel product, or does it air dry?
Thank you!! 🥰
All gel and cured with my UV/LED lamp. I don’t think I could have accomplished this amount of detail without curing it. Totally worth it, but yeah… this was tedious.
Oh and I guess I hadn’t mentioned anywhere… my toenails match 🤣😭🫠
I just try to do French tips and it takes me like 5 hours lol and that’s with gel polish. You did an absolutely outstanding job!
Thank you so much! I’ve been learning so much everyday and it’s so rewarding!! ♥️
Have you tried the stamping trick or the painting a centerline and filling it in the get the smile line right tricks? They might really help! 🥰
That's dedication! They look great.
Wow! You're an amazing girl!
Looking great....
You can try tilting your finger so gravity would be pulling the gel downwards and away from your cuticles, and it’s always better to have a small gap between your skin and the gel than it on your skin! Gel reactions are serious so try to just not bring the brush that close.
I can see your cuticles are flooded and need some work, but I can say that even with extremely careful application mine lift anyway. If even a tiny bit of the gel seeps out, like if the gel wicks into your nail fold, the void left under the nail WILL cause lifting - which happens constantly because the application is such a tedious mess. I gave up on full coverage tips, because what time you save in shaping is spent double trying to get the cuticles to not look like shit.
Try not to apply the tip farther away from the cuticle so there’s a gap. Make sure you drill the tip near the cuticle so it’s thin. U can buff it out afterwards so it’s more seamless. I like to apply a base coat over it so it’s extremely seamless
it happens to me, but once they grow out after a few days I drill them and it prevents lifting.
Nailcou on YouTube has a bunch of videos on gel x nails! I know they will be very helpful :)
Hey everyone,
I’ve been lurking here for a bit and wanted to see if anyone has advice before doing my first gel x set at home! Anything to look out for, specifics on steps etc.
I’ve been doing gel polish for probably over 5 years. I just bought the gel x kit from apres, x short round tips, a new lamp from apres (currently have a gellish lamp), Omni light, e file, soaking tubs (where you can put warm water under to warm the acetone), and other fun accessories.
Does anyone have any knowledge to share before I go all in?
My gel nails usually last a couple weeks without chipping and no retention issues.
Thank you!!!
My two best product recommendations are the Blue Cross cuticle remover and an orange stick (do one finger at a time because this stuff is POWERFUL) for cuticle prep, and the Jello Jello peel off base/One Kill activator set for easier removal. My nails still last until I get tired of them, and you don't have to wait forever for them to soak before you scrape off the goo, lol.
Wow. I looked up the Jello Jello peed off base/one kill. That looks awesome. Do you have to be careful only getting that product on the nails? Or how potent it is? I took off a gel x set I got done at the salon a couple days ago to practice and used the e file/soaking method. It was a lot.
The base, yes. It’s like any other gel so clean it off really well before curing if it gets on your skin. The One Kill activator stuff is more of a serum and won’t burn your skin or anything. You can be done with the removal in 10 minutes, with no damage to your natural nails.
I took the plunge 3 months ago and I’m never going to the salon again lol . I would recommend 3 things:
proper nail prep ( make sure you dehydrate your nails, any oils on your nails will cause them to come off). I clean prep my cuticles with sally hanson cuticle remover, it makes it so much easier. Also I wipe them down with alcohol before dehydrating to make sure all oils are removed.
Sizing- this is so important! Make sure your sizing is accurate. Depending on the shape of your cuticles, you may have to file and shape the tips for the best fit. If you are in between sizes it’s best size up and shape/ file the sizes down to the right fit. Sizing or applying extend gel/ nail glue to your skin will cause them to lift/ pop off in 2 days ( I learned this the hard way 😭) lol
Application- this is the trickiest part , and takes patience. I had to watch a lot of YouTube videos to figure this out and went outside of the Apres steps by skipping the curing of the gel to the natural nail. I tried some new suggestions for application with my most recent set and I’m hoping it works, my goal is for 3 weeks retention. So far I’m doing good with my most recent set, with no lifting but it’s only been about 5 days .
Keep practicing, it’s definitely doable and will save you so much money if you are going to the salon!
Thank you so much for the advice. Greatly appreciated. I’m going to have to report back after my first set. 😂
Honestly Aprés has great videos about application, and if your gel nails are lasting that long I assume your cuticle prep is good. The hardest part is gauging how much extend gel to use and getting the tip on so it’s not crooked! But that just comes with practice.
I did buy some slanted tweezers to help with applying the extra short round tips. I’m hoping the shortness in length won’t be too difficult when learning. My kit comes in Saturday and I’m very excited to start. Especially after browsing this sub for the past month, everyone’s sets look sooo good.
Ya the short ones are definitely harder! But I wear shorts too. I never thought to use tweezers, I might try that next time! I’m excited to see your sets when you get everything. 🙂
Sounds like you’re all set! Watch a few videos, figuring out the amount of gel is the learning curve.
Yes! I was watching some videos and the gel amount seems like the trickiest part. I’ve been liking “Nail Career Education” videos on YouTube. Do you have any recs for gel x techniques?
I found the apres brand videos helpful and everything else seems to be a repeat of that. Just making sure you do a thin layer on your natural nail, cure, then apply to the tip - add a ‘bead’ at the bottom. There’s just a lot of variation with it depending on c curve of tip, natural c curve, size of your nail bed, etc.
You might want to watch some of the Apres videos on youtube to have a better idea on how to use the kit
My post was removed in r/nailart (soaking nails in pure acetone can ruin nail art though I ask them🫤) anyways…. Does anyone know what type of nails people use in order for them to reuse the nails soak them off but not ruin the designs that they made on the nails. Because near future, I want to learn how to make my own nails, and I have my own cases for them. I really wanna order a personalized set but they're up to $20-$45 depending on what company or brand you go to.
i really don’t know anything because i’m just a beginner but i think to reuse them u need just a regular strong nail glue that doesn’t need to be cured to apply the press on because they’ll be easier to remove and still stay on
Peel off base coat
Does peel off base coat hurt the natural nail bed?
I have those butterfly nails where were you looking at them on
I don’t do gel X but started making press ons and have been using BTArtbox soft gel tips from Amazon. I’ve seen others use beetles tips or kiara sky tips too. I don’t soak but file the inside to remove old glue.
I'm a complete beginner with anything nails but after getting professional gel x extensions once and loving it, I'm considering learning to do it at home. I think with some time and practice I'd be able to learn the skills. I'm just looking for opinions from people who have given it a go, what was your experience? Price-wise and time-wise is setting up and learning from scratch it worth it?
TIA! :)
Yessss! No more paying $$ at the salon and still leaving disappointed. Sure, it takes me forever lol but whatever I pop on a show and work away.
These are so pretty!! How long does it take you to do a set?
Ty ty! This set wasn’t too bad, a couple hours. If I’m doing designs we can get into 3+😅 but also I’m at home so I’m watching a show, taking a break, and just generally dilly dallying lol.
thissss, hours and hours of tutorials and info posts was something i wish i did BEFORE i did my first few trials. could've saved me the initial disappointment, wrinkled finishes and possible dermatitis😭😭
LOVE !! These are so pretty!!
Thank you!
Right? 😅 my hands are so bougie right now and I look like a potato.
I’m getting a blow out tomorrow just so I can somewhat match the energy.
Yes totally worth it but I will admit I end up spending like 100 a month on nail products a month so far lol. But that is less than an equal quality job at the salon, and, the salon will not do as good and patient a job as me as others have said! I can’t sit there for 3 hours watching someone not be a perfectionist (which I am) for 150+. And I bet to watch tv / listen to podcast in my underwear while I’m doing it!
Are you okay sitting in a salon for 3 hours if they are a perfectionist? 😆 I just started my own independent nail tech operations and I’m not super fast yet but I am a major perfectionist 😅
I totally would have been a few months ago before I learned! Where are you located?? Good luck!
Yes!! Been doing mine for 5 years now
Same, doing my nails is so much an extension of me giving myself joy. It's wonderful <3
My second attempt gel-x tips! I would really like to master full coverage tips that are easy to remove - I love the look of some length and the feeling of reinforcement but need to have very short nails every two weeks or so for work. Using a peely base has been my solution so far!

My biggest concern is allergy prevention while getting over the learning curve of applying the tips and top coat as these are the times when I'm most likely to flood the cuticle. I worry that I'm flooding the cuticle under my skin and can't see it. Sometimes a bit of gel will seep out on the sidewall and I can remove it before curing but I'm not confident I'm removing all flooding especially by the cuticle area. This is extra true when I don't quite apply the tip straight, which is also what I'm working on. The top coat just surprised me with how quickly it self leveled and spilled onto the sidewalls and cuticle area but I'll be using less gel and flash curing next time around.
I know the color application is not perfect, and I'll definitely be working on that too, but first and foremost I really want to get the tip application solid.
Also, if anyone has any pointers for tips for long nail beds with a natural nail that flare out at the free edge, please let me know. I really don't want to add length to the tip itself, and going up tip sizes means I have quite a bit of filing down to do at the base of the tip. I think what I've done is passable for now, but eventually I'd like for it to be cleaner on the sides.
Overall pretty happy with this set!
These are gorgeous 😍
Thank you!
I new to gel nails…how does the peel off base work?
The "perfect" collection from Madam Glam is hella thin and shrinks even over builder gel. I have the black and white and several of the regular colors and there seems to be a difference in the formula. The paints on the other hand are quite nice
The paints are the potted gels? I've not gotten to potted gels yet but that is my aim!
They have 2 things in pots. One is called gel paint, and it's specifically designed for nail art. It's very thick, but not so thick that you can't work with them. The other is called pudding gels, and they're regular gel polish but a thicker, more pigmented consistency. I haven't personally used them, though, so I can't speak to the quality of them.
Some gel polishes actually don’t play well with tips, it’s very much trial and error. I love how these turned out!!!!
Thanks! Some nails didn't have trouble with the polish, but others immediately started behaving strangely. Chemistry! If I find it happens in the future, I'll probably start a compatibility spreadsheet lol
I know nothing about anything but wanted to say that these look stunning!
Thanks so much!
